- What's New is a 1983 jazz album by American singer/songwriter/ producer Linda Ronstadt. It represents the first in a trilogy of 1980s albums Ronstadt recorded with bandleader/arranger Nelson Riddle. John Kosh designed the album covers for all 3 albums.
What's New was released in September 1983 and spent 81 weeks on the main Billboard album chart. It held the position for five consecutive weeks while Michael Jackson's Thriller and Lionel Richie's Can't Slow Down locked in the 1 and 2 album positions. The album also reached 2 on the Jazz albums chart. It was RIAA certified Triple Platinum for sales of over 3 million copies in the United States alone. The album also earned Linda another Grammy Award nomination for Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female alongside Donna Summer, Bonnie Tyler, Irene Cara and Sheena Easton, all of whom performed live on the 1984 Grammy telecast.
All tracks also included in the compilation "'Round Midnight", released on Asylum Records in 1986.
Beautiful Linda, she makes other singers look like novices. Clear, melodious, effortless. Thank you for everything you've given us, Miss LInda!
1983 music video: no dances, no nudity, no sexual undertones. Just some simple flashback movie scenes, a powerful ballad and the breathtaking voice of Ms. Linda Ronstadt.
End result: A magical performance that is still a joy to watch 40 years after it was first made.
Absolutely one of the finest voices of our (or any) time.
Just beautiful... That voices melts right in the ear.
Try not to fall in love when she sings out that line
*"I still love you so..."* 🌹
Still love you, Linda!
She really rocked this song no other artists can do it better for me. I love this song thank you Linda 💕💕💕
She has made so many great recordings over the years, but I absolutely LOVE her recordings of old "standards" from the 30s and 40s with the late Nelson Riddle and his Orchestra. Now I have to go put on that album.
Linda Ronstadt was truly the epitome of American classical musicians. She was great in both the genres of country and jazz music. This forty year old song is testament to that.
Linda's voice, whether back in her Stone Poneys days through Nelson Riddle and beyond, never fails to stop me in my tracks. Phenomenal.
Every time I listen to this, I get goosebumps. Magnificent Linda Ronstadt.
Such a pure, wonderful voice! I could listen to her forever.
She brought a whole new side of music I never knew existed. There will never be another Linda Ronstadt!!!
I have always loved her voice, hers was the first really big concert that I saw outside of pub bands, her voice is still mesmerising
Getting kicked out of Your Group is new!!!!
Wow this sure brings me back to the good old days of the early 80's when people were real unlike today.
Linda Ronstadt was magical in this video with a fabulous voice to go with it.
I miss the 80's 😔
Folks----------Mr Sinatra said it : " You can wait around & hope, but you'll not hear the likes of this, again. " ------------THIS is the lost art known as a pure voice------nothing fake------nothing affected-----simply doing what she did without peer. ------------The Best. --------------------------WolfSky9, 73 y/o9
OMG! Why am I now just seeing this??? This song always ALWAYs makes me tear up. I just really don't know why. Her emotions in this song are just so real, maybe I am feeling them myself. What an artist! Brava Linda!!
It was soooo daring, yet brilliant that she did this (these) album with Nelson Riddle! At her peak, she switched gears. I was all of 21, enlisted in the Air Force up in Fairbanks, AK, when this came out. I got the side eye from most of my Air Force friends when I showed them this album. But I freaking love it! i remember reading an interview with Nelson who said the only problem with Linda was getting her to SLOW DOWN for the slower tempos of these songs... Wow! A great voice to great classics that I had never heard before.... Thanks Linda!!
Will never forget listening to this as I drove away from the hospital late on the afternoon in December 1983 when my daughter was born.
PL
What a truly, beautiful reflection. :)
I also birthed a daughter in December 1983. Best Christmas gift ever.
The trio of albums she did with Nelson are brilliant. Music that is absolutely timeless.
Wow; how romantic is this?!?!? Linda Ronstadt was one of the most most beautiful and talented vocalists of my or any generation!!! Has anyone ever seen such gorgeous eyes? I'm in love with her all over again!
Hi Michael. Isn't Linda wonderful? She is the best.
What do you mean "again" ... I never fell out of love with her, since I saw her in a 1976 concert ?!
Inolvidable su voz y su cara expresiva con una mirada tierna. ¡Preciosa ella y esta canción!
Could there be a more beautiful song, with such a beautiful arrangement, and such a beautiful rendition, by such a beautiful lady? If so, I haven't found it.
I doubt you ever will find anyone who you can compare her to
When Linda takes it up a 4th, my heart skips a beat. Such a voice!! Perfection!!! She to me remains tthe most underrated singer. She could sing anythng and make it sound great; and of course, she always looked great!!!
I still get chills just looking at her. She is fantastic.
18 years old and mesmerized with this song and album back then.
And then we got a trilogy that I still listen to and am still MESMERIZED!!!
That last line and sustained note still gets me every time
Me t00
Oh my word, so devastatingly lovely. Just sheer perfection.
One of my all-time favorite songs and videos. Takes me back to a different time
I bought this album for my parents when it first came out, and they loved it. I could weep.
Linda Ronstadt truly defines versatility for me. They truly don't have artists like her anymore.
Beautiful 😍
Linda was the best. I was very sad to watch the ending of her special On CNN. Just an incredible performer
This is such a fave Linda Ronstadt song. Also, now that I hear it, especially again. It really calms me down, even now that I still have a headache a bit.
Just wonderful. The song, the voice, perfect diction. Very special.
She was so original. Nothing fake. Back when music was so beautiful. A lost art in this era.. I will sing your song with great respects Linda Ronstadt ❤
What makes this great song so wonderful is Linda's deep feeling for the words of this creation. How many thousands of us are touched by the love that somehow slipped away, so swiftly and sadly. Even worse is the harshness of Parkinson's that hit this beautiful, beautiful, lovely woman, causing her to stop singing. Tragic; life is so treacherous at times. Frank Sinatra is my top version of this song with Linda a very close next best.
Phil, This is one of my favorite recordings and a day wouldn't be a day to me if I didn't include the big band sound in it. Bob Crosby (Bing's brother) did maybe the first recording of this in the '30's...An ultra beautiful version. Still Linda's is my favorite.
I like eidye gormet's version a tiny bit better. But this is great singing by this Lady of Music.
today 2019 Dead or Alive She's bringing back
It's not Parkinson's
It's called Progressive supranuclear palsy
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Progressive_supranuclear_palsy
Linda can weave magic with this song.
Linda, you're beautiful and your beautiful voice. Thank you for selecting this song. My Dad played this back around 1940s when he was in a jazz band here in Cali...he's smiling, r.i.p. like me listening to your beautiful interpretation.
Linda is such a versatile singer and it is a perfect match with Nelson Riddle Orchestration.
The only other word you could add here to describe beautiful Linda is ... Glamorous - Wow!
One of the greatest female singers of all time, in with the likes of Barbra Streisand. And one of the sexiest and sultriest women of her generation !!
She leaves even Streisand behind. Look This performance is amazing.
Damn she had such an amazing voice. The age of great vocalists (male and female) are behind us.
Reminds me of someone who broke my heart during the mid-1980's. Beautifully done by Linda but a very sad and disappointing memory that comes back to haunt me now and then . . .
I'm sorry for your bad memories. I hope someone special comes into your life to help you forget about the person who hurt you
Beautifully filmed video for Linda's beautiful rendition of a classic song. She sure had gorgeous pipes.
This is just pure heaven on the ears. Smooth powerfull voice..It doesnt get any better than this!
Linda did an incredible job covering this classic from the Great American songbook.
One of my favorite songs that Linda sang...with heart. Thank you Linda.
Brings tears, how classy 🚣
¡¡¡MUCHAS FELICIDADES LINDA!!! TE QUEREMOS DESDE MADRID ( Spain)
if anybody else ever decides to do a "Standards" album or 4 like Linda Ronstadt did...they are gonna have a tough time doing it better than she did or even getting close to her...she has done numerous interviews about recording the "Standards" with Nelson Riddle and that she had a deep passion to do them...and that's the difference her "Passion" for the music...she didn't do them for fame or fortune her record company and her producer Peter Asher did not want her to do them she did them because she thought this "Great" music was going to be lost to time and wanted do her part to try and save it...its a crime that this dreadful disease took her AWESOME voice away...prayers for Linda...amen
She brings tears to my eyes ❤
Props to the incomparable Nelson Riddle and his orchestra.
They make this song what it is. In fact, everything she did with nelson Riddle was goo because of him and his orchestra.
and teaching her how to sing that big band era style which of course she nailed
Franks Orchestra
YES!!!!!!
Incredible woman incredible voice!
such an amazing voice wow pure n sweet
Powerful, interpretive voice. This three CD collection is my all time favorite. Love the music, love the artist, and love the arrangements. It's perfect!!!!
Beautiful voice and beautiful lady!!!
Linda did an absolute perfect job singing this song
Except that she's singing a bit flat (and sharp in places), and her lip-synching is off.
@@noahvale939 Bullshit.
I'm not sure if I could find a single one of her pop songs I ever liked, but her torch music was way over the fence, even more so for the fact it was sang in an era forty years after that sort of music vanished.
@@noahvale939 u
She sounds perfect to me.
Saw her in concert outside Chicago a few decades (?) back. She was absolutely perfect. She and the orchestra were especially awesome at this song.
at 75 ,my memories can only get stronger listening to this music style and her voice--wow to be young again
That was real talent and a beautiful voice, I'm lucky to be part of that era.
Aghhh, the way she sings "how is the world.... treating you?" gets me especially! Genius.
Ahhh.... what does it for me is the end, when she so passionately pleas out,
"I still love you sooooooo"
💔 Heartbreak, pure heartbreak.
Scheherazade Noir yaaaas! 🌹
When this came out is was barely old enough to drive and I was working miles away from home so to ease my nerves while driving in the rain at night I would listen to the What's New Album on cassette. It's still one of my favorites to this day.
Very nice. The trumpets reminds me of a good friend of mine, now deseased who played trumpet in his younger days in his teens snuck out of house to go to gigs for some local big bands. Way before my birth, but I remember him one night picking up a trumpet and doing some of this. Fantastic! He was like a dad to me. He was Army Aircorps WWII POW.
What a beautiful singer and beautiful woman. My brother has this album, got it in 83 and I remember being blown away by how good it is.
Absolutely love this. Flawless perfection.
She was one of the greatest ever! Amazing talent.
She's still alive
My most longing evergreen songs listening with her... that moment till now.... and then maybe...
It tells of our story also....
Thankyou verymuch, Linda...
Such a beautiful song performed by a beautiful lady anda real talented artist.
The words, her voice, her longing but hopeful look, the handsome dude, (but a magician? - not a knock, they needed a Pro not a clown), Nelson Riddle's band and arrangement, - ahh, having known unrequited myself so long ago - Linda reminded me of the beauty of that deep love and pain of it not happening or working out and the "hopeful" meeting. I tell ya I feel the emotional high and then the unmatched heartache every time I hear it. Thank you Linda, it is just perfect as perfect can be, 1983 - through eternity. =)
Just Beautiful!
I love her dearly
Amazing collaboration with Nelson Riddle.
A classic throughout eternity. Perfection.
Gorgeous in all the finest ways. Linda...still.
Man, if this one doesn't melt you....
She had 3 Albums of Hits with OLD STANDARDS in the 80s.. That is Pretty Incredible! Somebody Help a Brotha Out and BRING BACK CREATIVITY IN MUSIC!!
Me too.. On cassettte driving in the rain!! Living in Toluca Lake near all the Studios, like Universal and Burbank in the 1980s.. What a great time to be young..
Just saw this video for the first time. Linda, I still love you so!
this is the first time i've had an 'earworm' that i was happy about...been humming What's New and listening to every version i can find for weeks now. one of the best standards ever.
I remember my mom asking me if I liked this video and I said yes I do she smiled at me and said "so do I ". I look at this much differently now and like it even more.
Linda, incomparable
Doesn't get any better!!
Beautiful lyrics.
Keep it light in the translation.
I still love you so...you'll always remain in my ❤. No sadness, only happy memories
Pure perfection
I bought this album the week it came out. I haven't heard it in years. It's aged very, very well. Maestro Riddle at his best and Lovely Linda at hers.
Best voice ever
Love Linda!
Instant goosebumps ... just add Linda Ronstadt!!!! This is REAL music!!!!
Perfecto! never realized Linda was so beautiful
Various artists are singing this song, but Linda's (Nelson Riddle Orchestra) is the best.
Frank Sinatra 1958 with Nelson Riddle is the best because it's haunting as is the album it stems from Sings For Only The Lonely.
The trombone solo on Sinatra's is great.
Love this song💕
Love Linda forever ...The Voice🎤🎶🎵❤
This is simply an amazing song in so many ways
Beautiful song and rendition performed by a beautiful person ❤️
Wow what a voice, such passion.
Oh, I'm not crying, I just have a passion of cutting onions close to my eyes.
Me too!!!
Beautifully arranged. Linda killed it.
I adored this when it came out and still loving it in 2018 , some things are eternal !
Gorgeous
Am iconic number sung so well by Linda!
One of my favorite songs by Linda 😀👍
