Without a doubt, Linda Ronstadt was the most versatile singer to ever open her mouth. She sang in so many very different styles and excelled in every one of them. It's a true shame that illness has silenced this incredible talent and amazing voice!

I strongly suggest that you react to another song off of this album, “Someone To Watch Over Me”. The richness of her voice really shines. She does the verse, which is the beginning, which sets up the song. In fact, if I remember correctly, she always included the verse when she did these old standards. And, the song itself is just wonderful. She did 3 albums, maybe 4, with Nelson Riddle.

Great choice Debbie. Linda is one of my mom's favorite singers so I grew up listening to her songs being played throughout the house. This song reminds me of when I was about 9 years old and my parents had been arguing so that night I surprised them with a romantic dinner. I lit candles and put this album on. I guess they made up because they just celebrated their 48 year marriage anniversary. 😄❤ Sing it Linda!!!

This was representative of one of the phases of her career. She had initially approached Nelson Riddle (a legendary composer in his day-the 40's through the 60's) to arrange one song on a jazz standards album she was contemplating but he said he wasn't interested unless it was to be for a whole album. She was thrilled and said that was more than she had hoped for. The initial collaboration-titled "What's New" was so successful both commercially and artistically they completed two others, all with music from what is considered The Great American Songbook. Every song on all three are beautiful but there is a particularly haunting version of "I'm a Fool to Want You" which was co-written by Frank Sinatra.
She did follow this period of musical exploration with a couple of albums culled from Mexican culture (her father's heritage was Hispanic, her mother's German). There is much greatness contain in them as well.

Harri, I have to complement you on your reaction to Linda's songs. Her father was Mexican, mother German, and she did 2-3 albums in Spanish, but she does not speak Spanish! I own one of them, and I do not understand a word, but her voice makes up for it easily! I think that she was the best female vocalist of all time!
Also, check your email - sent you one in May 2023. It is such a sad illness she has that is not recoverable. Linda is 1 month older than I amI!

Actually, she did do one duet with Frank Sinatra called “Moonlight in Vermont”. She heard these songs growing up because her grandparents loved this style. When she got restless in the 1980’s and wanted to try something different, her record executives didn’t want to deviate from the pop/rock that was making millions for them and they said she would ruin her career. She did it anyway and it was a huge success. She went on to make three albums of this material! So much for the corporate geniuses 😂😂 Thanks Harri🌺✌️

When this was new and they played it on the radio, i pulled the car over to listen with this OMG, this is Linda Ronstadt? she was nominated for a Grammy for this album but did not win. Nelson Riddle arranged orchestra pieces exclusively for Sinatra and Nat King Cole at one time in the 1950's. " What's New is a 1939 popular song composed by Bob Haggart, with lyrics by Johnny Burke.

Natural, God given talent, which is rare today. A time when singers didn't need their voices manipulated. Music, real music like this, could one day become nothing but a distant memory, and music's future will be worse than much of today's. Occasionally, we still hear a voice that gives us a glimmer of hope, but they're few and far between. I'm not trying to imply that there shouldn't be any music like what is popular today. Every era has had a variety of genres, as it should be. The difference is that they co-existed in the industry, each having an audience (often a crossover audience), and receiving their deserved recognition. I've watched so many young reactors, many in their 20's-30's, and they are totally blown away by the music of past eras. Some going so far as to ask "WHAT has happened to the music today ? This was real talent ", and comment how beautiful not only the voices were, but the music itself. I got my love of music from my mom. She didn't limit herself to specific genres or eras. Sadly, it seems too many people do. I was raised on not only the music of my era (50's-60's), but of my mom's too (30's, 40's) Even my brother who is only 2 yrs. younger is stuck in the late 50's, 60's-70's. He seldom strays out of his comfort zone. We all need to do that now and then, so we don't lose something that blazed trails for so many future artists. Without the music of these bygone eras, we wouldn't have new music. I hope we eventually get to a point where "everything old is new again ", and maybe ushers in a renewal of more natural talent and less manipulating of voices .

Harri, I want to thank you for taking the time to listen to and showing so much appreciation for the talent that is Linda Ronstadt and all the genres of music that she has covered. One can say that her voice will be missed considering the health issues that have stolen her pure vocals, which is heartbreaking. But luckily, we have a wonderful, beautiful catalog of her songs that we can listen to over and over again.

Nelson Riddle's arrangements can bring out the best in anybody!! One of his most famous is with Frank Sinatra, on I've Got You Under My Skin. One of THE BEST overall songs EVER!!!!!
Hearing the song What's New always reminds me of Eydie Gorme (pronounced E-Dee Gormay), another voice you would greatly enjoy! I'll Take Romance & My Funny Valentine are 2 of Eydie's early hits from the mid-late 50s. So many, many more!! Eydie was married for more than 50 years to Steve Lawrence, with another fabulous voice of his own. Portrait Of My Love is one of my favorites of his early hits. Each had a hugely successful career on their own, but together, they were known simply as Steve & Eydie, and were possibly the greatest nightclub act of all time!! Their shows were just incredible. In fact, here is a special treat for you - what could be the best 15 minutes in recorded music - Steve & Eydie doing a magnificent medley of Gershwin songs. I hope you'll watch. This truly is something very special!! Recorded 1975. ua-cam.com/video/1Zni8yLEl-I/v-deo.html

@@65gto32 Yes, Don C was Eydie's version of Frank's NR, no doubt about it. My dad was a jazz musician & arranger, & Eydie was his favorite singer. In fact, her rendition of My Funny Valentine was my dad's favorite musical arrangement (by Don C) with vocal accompaniment. I grew up with this stuff. Loved it then, love it now!! Even got my kids into it - took my oldest, who was 10 at the time in 1990, to see Frank Sinatra live in concert with Steve & Eydie (who she had already seen before). Also took my kids to see Paul McCartney that same year. Cheers to you, too! 🥃🙂

It's ironic that you mention Sinatra because Nelson Riddle was the arranger for Frank's greatest albums from 1955-1959. He brought the swinging style that became part of the new cool Sinatra. But he also arranged Frank's classic album about losers in love Only the Lonely. One of the songs they did was What's New and it is a powerful performance as all are on the album. I'm a rocker, but my parents weaned me on Frank and this album has become even more haunting through the years...

I'm going to be just as honest whenever I respond to any first time reaction of a classic musician's work. I hope not to offend. I believe the "first time" reaction is probably not as true as most of these folks would like the viewers to believe. Still, I can appreciate their varied tastes in music. But I think most of these reaction videos are only as sincere as your basic reality tv program...that is, thought about, and somewhat rehearsed, and probably not as unfamiliar with the artist as the narrator admits.
Now on to another point. Linda Ronstadt did have what would amount to an entire career in orchestra music. She completed three albums with Nelson Riddle and his orchestra. The span of those albums alone is more content than the careers of some recording artists. I'm not dismissing here. Then Linda used orchestra in various ways in subsequent projects, including a Christmas album...but she also did an album of quieter music very much like big orchestra with a small band called, "humming to myself."

Oddly, she can no longer sing. Not a single note.
