Here's what I would suggest for filming underwater:
SPL Underwater Housing (what I recommend for DSLR camras:
splwaterhousings.com/
Red Splash Bag (what I would suggest for filming on surface of water with Red cameras):
www.ewa-marine.com

I have below a list of all the equipment we use on most our shoots. They are direct links to Amazon, where we bought all the same equipment. These are affiliate links, so if you want to support us, and buy the item off the link, will make a little money off of it. Your not charged any extra, and it goes to supporting us, just wanted to make sure you knew ahead of time :) These are all products I stand by 100 percent regardless, and all products we use on a day to day basis. At the end of this list I'll have a link to a blog going into even more depth about the equipment we use.
Camera Equipment I Use:
Canon 5D Mark III (use for all our behind the scene videos):
amzn.to/1Xe3uL3
Devinsupertramp Signature Series Glidecam:
amzn.to/1UU9UjC
My Favorite Lenses in Order of used most:
Canon 16-35mm F/4 USM
amzn.to/1Xe3KtA
Canon 14mm F/2.8
amzn.to/1UUacqQ
Canon 70-200mm F/2.8 II
amzn.to/1UUaf5X
Canon 24mm F/1.4L II
amzn.to/1UUaj5S
Canon 50mm F/1.2
amzn.to/1Xe3XwT
For all our aerial shots, we use the DJI Inspire 1, with two controllers.
amzn.to/1UUauhl
Our favorite audio mic for on board camera:
Rode Pro Mic
amzn.to/1R8xPMH
We also use B+W circular polarizer. They get rid of the reflections from water, windows, and most plants/green things. We use them whenever the sun is out. When buying a polarizer make sure to get the right size for the lens that you own. I feel if your going to spend the money and buy an expensive lens, it's worth spending the extra money to buy a polarizer of the same quality to match your lens, otherwise your lens won't be as clear. Plan on spending about 130 dollars US for one.
Here's a couple different sizes for common lenses:
77mm.
amzn.to/1UUbjH2
82mm
amzn.to/1UUbnXp
GoPro Hero4 Black Edition. This is the one we use and recommend.

Always test your camera housing underwater while its EMPTY, before you put your camera in it.
What tutorial videos do you all want to see next?!I'm filming a bunch today for you all :)
Dslr tutorial?
How to tell a good story
+devinsupertramp The glidecam please!
glidecam tutorial
+devinsupertramp Your PC Setup.
The one thing that you never cheap out on..... Underwater housings
+Stretch Reality amen :)
I'm not into cinematography or photography. But still I watch your videos lol. Very straightforward and educational.
+Luis Sellas we appreciate the support regardless :)
+devingraham I'll never know if eventually I will do cinematography. 6 years ago I watched a bunch of tutorials of video editing etc. And today I'm using that knowledge to manage my small business and create content.
+Luis Sella you uploaded what? 2 videos, much content
+Jelle Dericks I've made my business channel with another name.
Just put the Red in a ziplock bag ;)
+Coop Furg Or... A plastic shopping bag with a couple of rubber bands around the top
+Coop Furg i just wrapped news paper around mine with some masking tape
I do the same with my phone:) works pretty well
Just wrap a condom around it, if it can prevent me making babies, it can save a red
One tip about any waterproof housings, Always test them first! Take the housing and stuff some paper in it then close it up and put it under water for a while. If the paper gets wet, then its a bad housing. Its better for the paper to get wet then for what ever thing you are trying to protect.
Just thought I would share this info with everyone :) Hope it helps in the future
Epic tip!
+Insanity On A Bun thanks :) it's saved me a couple of times!
golden rule - always do a dry run (housing without the camera) and take it to depth for at least 15 minutes. if its water tight it should handle with the camera - of course its worth it to dive with cameras ;) so long as you do things correct. we always use nauticam, top notch equipment ;)
I would not put a $50k camera in this $1,000 plastic bag lol
+David Ams ahaha true
Hey Devin, do you ever use any red filters underwater?
I haven't yet
awesome!!! really needed this info.thanks devin !!!
So inspired by everything you have done. Your content have and will continue to alter the path I walk in life.
this is barely underwater, the SPL is a 'surf proof' housing, actual underwater filming is usually done with much stronger aluminium housings (or poly like ikelite).. and the housings usually cost as much or a lot more than the cameras they house.. you really should point out that this is for barely subsurface filming..
What would you recommend for deep water camera housing (30-60 ft)
@@cerrajiana8070 totally depends on the budget! And again 30-60 feet is not very deep.. for example I use an Aquatica housing rated to 90m which is 295 feet but if I wanted to use it deeper I could switch out the springs on the controls for ones that can withstand more pressure. The price for the housing and the lens ports and vacuum system is around the 5-8000 usd mark. You could also just spend a few 100 on an ikelite polycarbonate housing which will easily cope with 60 feet no problem. It somewhat also depends on convenience, if you want a housing that supports a vacuum system for doing preimmersion checks and gives a lot of peace of mind, or if that is not much of a concern. Also depends if you are using a camera system with lots of different lenses and strobe firing approaches. For example I have three different lens setups for my housing and I use an led flash trigger to trigger the strobes over fiber optics, which needs to be accommodated by the housing.
I have taken pictures with disposable cameras under water. I used disposable because I was told "It not if but when it leaks." I had the best pictures on the trip compared to all the others I saw. This was all still photography and those people using high end film cameras had all kinds of problems. I can't dive any more but I have the memories. Love to watch your videos.
Keep up the good work. I have learned so much from the tutorials. Thank you!!
Just here to thank you, you help me a lot with all this tutorials so THANKS ♥
+Sacha Luisada soooo glad to hear :) Thanks for the support as well :)
@@devingraham The same company that made the Red Splashbag (Ewa-Marine) made a splashbag for DSLRs and Mirrorless cameras (bhpho.to/2V8cTsO) could you recommend this? Do you know anybody who had a good/bad experience with it? None of the reviews mention water damage (the poor ones are about the limitations of using the camera while in the bag) and it's cheaper than buying a GoPro.
Recently gotten into your channel, very informative and straight to the point. Great job!
Thanks mate. Great vid.
Very helpful! Thanks!
Hi Devin! that's has to be the most informative video I have ever seen!! thank you very much for taking the time, I have the out most respect for your work!!! thank you.
thank you so much for sharing!
wow, lots of knowledge. thanks devin
Hi there Devin. Outstanding video thanks for
shairing your experiences of underwater
successes and failures.
I have had drama with a cheap bag (Decapac)
I would say ok for splash proof, but it has leaked
once in a pool, at just one meter.
I have since made my own better case.
I have a question for you. Using auto-focus underwater will it work OK? I thought some
compensation for the water was needed.
Do I need to get closer to the subject than the focus is set or further away?
Awesome video bro, keep up the good work👌🏻
Do you have any tips on good underwater shot composition
Doing research right now for my graduation film that I'm DPing and there is a shot taking place underwater so this was SUPER helpful! Thank you so much
Under water shots always look so majestic and like always your tips are ace!
you are the best man and thank you for the WB video and all other tutorials :)
I miss the days when UA-camrs didn't have to clarify that a recommendation wasn't sponsored.
I am a surf photographer @evanyamashiro and I personally use a SPL. But I am debating if I should switch to a AquaTech because you have access to all the controls vs a SPL where you would have to pay $100 for each button you would want to add.
good stuff! thank you
That was enjoyable! Thanks! I don't think I'll be filming underwater any time soon, but it's good stuff to know if I ever do!
Fantastic, thank you
made it all the way through. SO GOOD!
Devin ... Thanks for another great tutorial. The SPL housing: Does it have mounts for underwater lights as well? I looked carefully and didn't really see anyway to mount lights! Speaking of underwater lights... What systems do you use or recommend for depths greater than 30-feet?
Totally right about the learning curve.
I got a GoPro Hero 3 black right before Hero 4 was announced.
Got some sick pictures in Hawaii video was a challenge!
Thanks for another awesome video Devin!
This is gonna help me so much Thx devin.
+portal crafty So stoked it will help.
I went to the spl site, and it said that this housing is not for diving, just for surface-water sports, but I see that your videos with the case are underwater, would you really recommend this case for diving?
Thx Devin. I watched almost all yours videos and I really enjoyed them! You are great film maker and I am glad that you are sharing your experiences. I would like to know how did you create the animation at the begining of all yours videos. I know it may be stupid question but you are doing so much great tutorials for beginers ...
Thank's so much, it's 2019 and I needed this information because I need a shot underwater but I guess I will have to get a GoPro because it's just one shot, hopefully, it can seem a little cinematic when I edit it.
What about the light situation underwater? Do you use flashlights or strobes?
How do you keep the camera steady when it's strapped to your head? I've got a Panasonic Lumix DMC TS4 and it works great with the headstrap I got but I'm having trouble getting a steady view of anything when I'm swimming. I just went over the footage I recorded for a video I'm working on for my channel and it was absolute crap. Any suggestions?
hey devin how do you generate ideas for a video
Very Helpful!
Thank you so much for this video! I am starting to do research for marine cinematography and photography because I am a marine science uni student and this is literally my dream!
I am so glad that I know the budget I need to meet, so that is great! Subbing right now👍👍👍.
Hay Devin, nice video, also liked the one you did on the DJI Inspire II. Your housing is only good to go down a little over an atmosphere, if you go down further, would the lighting get too low for good professional looking images?
Great video! Could you do a tutorial on tripods, and which you recommend and use? Thanks, I love the channel! :)
That’s was an awesome video Devin and the Supertramp team, can you do some more underwater videos? 😁
Musics are fantastics in this video !
Great Video EDvin. I would also recommend SLP.
Thank you! You're very nice!
I have a MEIKON Waterproof Underwater for 5D Mk lll. Works great, but only able to use a 100mm L macro or 24-105mm L lenses. You didn't talk about any filter used for under water. For the Red, do you use H2O OLPF and for the Canon and GoPro do you use filters for underwater?
what about the condensation inside of the case/bag?
do you not have that problem?
Anyone ever used the Seafrogs camera housings? I'm considering one for my Sony a6300.
How is shooting through the viewfinder on the dslr? Can you see without any issues... It seems to me that with the housing the viewfinder would be very far and small
Dear Devin. what stabilizer are you using for ur shots? Ty
Hey Devin. How do you compensate for the loss of the color red underwater?
what about for a smaller camera? like a sony a6500
Oh shit !! I just bought a 20$ case for my T5i, should I use it ?
how do you setup your Glide Cam?
how is your experience to focus with that red marine bag? do you get much pressure on the camera from the water? if you use lenses with focus ring does the housing get cracked when you focus, because of the sharp rings ? how do you manage the glas for the lenses? do you need multiple sizes for lenses ? does the glas fit directly onto the lens or does it swim around with the bag? because if a wave comes it smashes directly onto the lens than ?
A video about your filmschool would be very nice! What was so special on your filmschool? Was it hard to get to your filmschool? And would you recommend to go to a filmschool rather than to a university or is it the same? :)
Keep going Devin! Your tutorials help me a lot!
PS. Sry for my bad english I'm from Germany ^^
I am from Germany too :'D
Dein Englisch ist gut.
I've been following your tutorials since the beginning and I must say, you do it very well! Presentation and content is excellent; I've been watching your videos till the end. I find the tutorials and Behind the Scenes more interesting then the main video; this is mainly because of the (fast style) editing. But I'm 'a bit' older then you, and you can't please everybody!
This means the world to me. Thank you so much for the support with it all. These have taken way more time than I anticipated, like 15 of hours of work each, ha, so hearing that makes it worth it :)
Great Video Bro
and of course... does the camera overhead at some point ? my red is blasting a lot heat air :) that could be a problem in a bag ?
Hey Devin thanks for all of these tutorials, another good brand for underwater housings is Aquatech, another good tutorial would be glidecams ???
Such amazing experience and information to share. How does anyone dislike this video???
Thank you!!!
Should you use polarizers underwater?
Sorry about the cameras! I recently bought a cheap case like that too, but only for shooting close to the surface, I always use my GoPro for underwater (until I can afford a housing lol). I was actually hoping you'd say something about shooting in the waves, like what fins do you use, do you have anything for flotation or how do you not drown? And not get smashed onto the reef :D
Have a question please answer!
I dont under stand Why you want to have schutter speed at 400 the eye see 50 shutter speed Why 400?
Hey Devin! I know on the website it says the depth rating is only about 15-20 feet (for the A series) do you know if that depth rating can be pushed at all.. I would use simply with free diving shots so I think most of my shots would be around that depth. Just dont want to go to 25 feet and start leaking :) Thanks!
Thanks so much for the tutorial
+Mathew Scullin thank you for watching :)
What about red filter? Do you use it?
considering the huge fans on the red, how does it not overheat in an enclosed space?
This is actually quite good
Didn't SPL make it with a ring attach on external lens to have the possibility to apply a "safe glass" like many makes with UV filters on regular lens? could work!!!
Can you teach us about fps or slow motion please
Will we ever see your Iceland project? :)
great vid
I use a waterproof bag, only during the summer comes door difference cold air and warm air condenses in my bag. I sat thinking of a bag of rice, I do not know if that helps. Anyone have an idea?
why 400 for the shutter speed? Normally it is supposed to be twice the fps, so around 60. Also having it that high would darken the image, which I imagine would not be ideal for how dark it gets a few feet under water vs above water
Hey Devin, I love how you are making these video and I was wondering if you could make one on how to EDIT but not like how a software works but how to make your videos interesting to watch and how to make a good intro and ending???????? 😀
Nice. Bug and about filters?
Thanks!!
I just learned something from this, " do NOT lend your camera to Devinsupertramp. Of your camera swims with the fishes. Lol
This was a good tutorial! When are the glidecam tutorials?
Devin could you do a video on your 5diii please and that setup do you also record raw on that camera too?
Consider it done. What would you like me to cover with a 5d?
a bit of lenses too would be good and if you use magic lantern for raw footage explanation on that would be brilliant :)
you said you shoot automatic iso underwater, do you do the same for non underwater shots?
No he doesn't
Hi!! You're great!! Thank you for your information about everything! :) Can you make some tutorial like, ''the best'' settings video? (I have EOS Canon 750D)
+Max G Studio Thanks a lot for your help and your advices. I will try :) I am a new in this sector and I would like to create a documentary. So I do research about the video settings of my device for this project. Thanks again! :)
+Max G Studio Thank you very much for your advice. In fact, now i'm doing some short videos... I hope to learn soon. I show you when it will be finish if you want
I don't need a film school.I can learn everything on #devingraham .
Yes :)
Great tutorials Devin, do you think you could discuss composition? I know it would be a longer video but we wouldn't mind if you dont ;)
Consider it done :)
***** Great! Thanks!
Omg it's so cool that you worked with Jon Mozo!! Hope you've checked out his daughter Amber, she's following his footsteps and she's a fantastic photographer!
Great video!! Thanks for doing this one!
Sorry to hear about the two cameras you've ruined. I did the same thing, sadly, when I was in the Bahamas. I had an underwater bag, similar to what you use for your RED. I'd opened and closed it several times throughout the day and I guess one of the times it didn't seal properly. Salt water got in and destroyed a 20D, 17-40, and 580ex. Sucks to lose the money, plus to lose your camera when you're out in a beautiful location. So yeah, don't skimp on underwater housings!
3:37 what lens is this?
Can you please do a video about how to properly balance the glidecam??
Glidecam they have videos on there Twitter page
how do you deal with water spots on the lens?
Lick it.
Zip lock bag
Are you planning to upgrade to the Inspire 1 RAW?
+Ramanuj Deka yes, that's the plan :)
+devingraham Good luck!
Hey Devin you should com go Melbourne to film id love to meet you
can u please make a brief video of what other equipments (gear) you use with RED camera
+Sudhir Parihar yes, consider it done.
+devingraham woaaahhhh!!! that was the quickest reply I've ever seen... I love your videos and you're very talented... keep on the good work.... and please make a full feature film... that will be so dope...
+Sudhir Parihar we are actually working on something really big right now :) Can't wait to announce it to you all in a few months what we are working on :)
