You can buy a dome housing that allows the 1/2 underwater shot with the go pro. I got one used for about $20.
With any of the underwater stuff, the best way is to buy used. There is a huge price drop from new, and if you are taking a DSLR into the water probably buy used and a generation or 2 old as well.

Hi Matti! It's very nice to see you exploring underwater photography and surf photography. I'm a surf photographer from Brasil and i follow since sometime ago. I started to watch your videos because i wanted to learn english and i needed find some interesting subject. Since than i've learnt to much from you, like video production, photography, motivation, hard work, etc. i'am so thankfull for you content. This video made me want to say that. Maybe you already know all of what i'll say bellow, but i want to be a little useful for you. my tips:
There are two different fronts for surfphotography. Dome port and "flat" port. For surfphotography, Dome Port is usually used with a fisheye lens at tubular waves. And you can use a smaller dome port to do this (more easy to sink). But, how you're starting at surfphotography i would recomend to use a flat port with a lens like 50mm or 70-200mm, this way you can stay a safety distance from surfers. Starting with fisheye lens at tubular waves can be dangerous.
For dome port you can use your spittle to avoid drops water. A good layer of spittle 5min before you get into the water. And at water you need to keep your dome port under water for most of time.
For flat port there are a lot of things to avoid drops water. I use a candle and a soft cloth to spread. You can use your body fat or anti-scald cream. and keep your flat port most of the time out of the water.
That's it. this tips are just based on my small knowledge, i was just trying to give back something. I'm very excited to watch you doind some surf content. Sorry for my english, i'm yet learning.

Matti, as a scuba instructor, I've been spending a lot of time shooting and film UW and one sure thing about it, it takes a lot of time underwater just to practice to get the shot. Took me years to figure out white balance, DR, angle of perspective and tons more regarding the overall conditions down under. For the cost, my old G7X is only like $400 but the housing, lights, macro lens, wide angle lens, arms costs me another $4000. So for A7, R5, it might goes all the way to $4500 just for a housing and ports for lenses. Not included lights, arm etc.
But its really rewarding if its our passion.
Can you share more tips on the settings you use for the best results?

You can always test with a small piece of paper in the casing first, see if it’s leaking before putting the actual camera in the water 💦 Well, just in case 😊

As someone who uses a housing quite a bit, it's nice to be able to give you tips for once since I learn so much from you. Use spot flex focus and put it in the upper or lower half of the screen depending on where you're trying to focus. Don't shoot wide open and if you know how far your subject is going to be, use manual focus set before you drop it in the housing. The auto focus will sometimes grab bubble close to the camera instead of your subject. Cheers
Awesome fpv flying, an idea to add more epicness to your shots would be to add woosh sound effects when you whiz past close objects and gaps. Another would be to add ocean sounds when near the ocean obviously...but I understand the time constraint and upload schedule obviously.
Another cool idea could be a bass subdrop when you enter a dive.
Those little things give it a super Micheal Bay effect.
Fun video! I guess you could have dunked that camera housing into the swimming pool without the camera in it at first to test it. Have fun and best of luck to you guys!

Most of those waterproof cases come with a compression tube of some sort so that you can pump out the air and give it a neutral or negative buoyancy - for when you're diving in deeper waters. Just FYI for those that think it floating is a huge downside.

Fun video. I'm using a same plastic case for my A7M3 for underwater video and photo. I think you should put some weights into the case and make it nature balance in the water. It would be more easy to control it under water.😜

12:06 most likely jellyfish larvae (babies). It's microscopic when very young, but when they're bigger you can see them & it looks like "backscatter". They all "sting/zap" you. (I will assume you know what they look like fully grown haha)
For the housing, proper dunk test is done JUST with the housing to make sure you assembled it correctly 😆 ...will save you thousands to remember that (esp for us non-sponsored photogs lol). You should also hold it underwater for 2 mins, turning it slowly, to see if any air bubbles/leaking is occurring.
Aquatech is a SURF housing, not a proper "Dive" Housing. Regardless, both types float. You want it to...otherwise, it's an extra worry to make sure you don't lose it to the depths &/or it'd be even heavier for swimming/in large surf/shooting at the surface.
So yes, there's a swimming learning curve to UW photography/videography, but it's worth it & it will be cool to see what you guys get in the future!

Always, always, always, put tissue in the housing and test for leaks BEFORE putting the camera in.

Some housings include weights to add to the housing.
Freshwater buoyancy is different from saltwater. Saltwater is more buoyant than freshwater.
Plastic housings more buoyant than aluminum housings.
Also, every 8 feet of underwater you lose 1f/stop of light. That’s why using the widest lens (dome port) w/the largest aperture (14mm @ f/1.8) is a popular pro u/w housing set-up.
Rules for using an underwater housing
1. apply a small smear of silicone grease to the seal
2. Make sure seal has no dust, dirt or hairs on it which can cause it to leak
3. Add weight to make it neutrally buoyant, not positively buoyant as your housing was. . Often weights are bolted to the housing
4. Don't jump in, and at first have housing pointed down - if it leaks it'll start flooding the dome not the camera.
When you get deep (diving) you lose the red out of the light, and action cam's aren't great at colour balance. Being able to adjust white balance and other settings at different depths on a proper cam is great.
Depth rating is king
