I completely agree with your sentiment at 50:05 in that that bass is pushing the limits, even with calibrated subs. According to the bass chart at the BEQ Catalogue website the bass in that part is peaking at around -12 dBFS at around 28 Hz. Even most Nolan movies only peak at around -14 dBFS so an extra 2 dB explains why it felt like the room was on the verge of coming apart at the seams. For those that haven't watched yet, hope you're not running your subs too hot...if you are, I highly recommend reducing them 2-3 dB (or more) as soon as you see Gurney playing the guitar in the ship.
53:38 Going back again. I remember a useful feature that I'm surprised isn't on modern receivers, I had an AVC A10SE Denon THX Surround EX processor which had in the THX mode a Bass protective volume, you could set and lock at that precise volume dial click and the content would never break it to protect your speakers. Is there not a thing like it today?
14:15 Dude that takes me back. I still have the THX DTS Laserdisc of that movie. Not watched it in years, maybe decades lol. Might have to dust it off for a spin. I went to go see Star Wars Episode I couple of weeks ago, and that was one of the best sound mixes I've heard in that Cinema. Everything panned and was precisely placed from the surround channels. Somethings have definitely changed over the last 30 years Surround sound audio and not always for the better. To many mixes are just face smashing bombastic even when not needed. Dune 1 was definitely that. It was so painful I complained at the time to the staff. I was very pleased that DUNE 2 was far more enjoyable
I just got Dune 2 on 4k disc and don't you think they nerfed the scene where Paul first rides the worm? In Dolby Cinema the low low bass was really moving but in my theater even my bass shaker that goes down to 10hz doesn't do anything.
That specific part where the work crashes into the sound where Paul is standing, yes, it's nowhere near as much bass. Other than that, I thought it was good though.
Such a great disc. By the way, Sicario is the movie you were trying to think of :) I agree he's just about the best director out there today along with Nolan. He's a perfectionist and every frame is top notch. Check out his earlier movies "Prisoners" and "Enemy". Dramas but you can see his style early on where he frames everything perfectly and has good reserve with the cinematography (especially Prisoners which is also just a great movie).
Finally picked this one up and can't wait to watch it! I may have missed it in the video, but what master volume level did you watch at? Do you ever have any issues with your neighbors complaining about noise/bass?
@@hdmoviesource that seems like it would be insanely loud! Though I have noticed that volume levels are much lower using your calibration method vs using Audyssey measurement positions with custom target curves (I use and love the Storm Audio ones!). Did you disable loudness management in the audio settings on your A1H?
Good stuff Carl. I like hearing about your experiences even though I haven't watched the Dune movies yet. Where should I start do you think? the OG 1984 or 2021
Thanks for another in-depth review Carl. Really enjoyed this movie. Watched it three times at the cinema. IMAX with Laser GT (1.43:1 and 1.90:1 screens) plus Dolby Cinema. 😎
@@hdmoviesource - Just finished a quadruple-bill at the flagship Cineworld in Leicester Square. The Blue Angels and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes in IMAX with Laser GT, The Strangers: Chapter 1, The Fall Guy in Superscreen. 10am until 22:30! 😎
@@hdmoviesource - Spending 5+ hours travelling time to the big smoke aka Capital (London) for a single movie is hard to justify so I usually wait until I fancy seeing at least two but ideally 3+ in a single day.
I had the same experience as you seeing this in theaters. IMAX was the best because it’s big and loud. Dolby Cinema is a more refined sound but it’s just weaker. And I find the bass shakers they use pretty tacky and unnatural. Are you generally more of an IMAX guy or a Dolby guy? I personally am more of a fan of IMAX.

Yeah, that scene is for real. I might see if I can measure it soon, see how much sub bass volume is in the room.

I don't think so. I might look into that Jeff.
It Is One Of My Most All Time Favourite 2024 Epic Science Fiction Movie.
Loved it Matthew.
Too bad we couldn't get the Imax version, hopefully down the road it happens...
Maybe one day Adam.
Think IMAX are chasing stream license exclusives at the mo' fingers crossed they'll be able to look after their niche market again soon.
Agreed.
I watch it in Dolby Vision format at my HT . The orange colour at the beginning was a bit too much but great Disc
Its strong for sure.

Oh absolutely, yeah that sounded goof in the movies. Dune 2 I think they got the balance perfect.
Yes, you used the term “shallow focus” correctly. The opposite would be “deep focus” where almost everything is in focus.
Okay, good, thank you Scott.

@@ChadAV69 Yeah that work smash had kill bass in my Dolby Theater.
I noticed a number of scenes with banding especially the sky shots and distance shots. Did you notice any banding shots on your screen?
I didn't personally. Do you have any timestamps?

That's it. Yeah great movie. Prisoner's is also an excellent movie. He's really up there now. A great director.

I listen to this movie at -6 main volume. But that's very loud.

Yes, everything is disabled. It's very loud yes.

I would start with 2021 dune and then dune 2. If you like it try the original. I love the original, personally. Thank you Chroma.

Is Dolby Atmos 7.1.4 or 7.1.6 on this Disc?
Not sure, I assume it's 16 channel. I will look into this.
I didn’t even know 7.1.6 mixes (for any 4K Blu-ray disc) exist. I thought all non-theatrical Atmos mixes were limited to 11 channels plus LFE.
@@ts6640 I thought mixes were 16 channels.

When I rip movies, they always say 16 channel Meridian.

Yeah, I've experienced the bass shakers too. They were okay. But, IMAX is definitely my go to cinema experience right now.
Background music is so distracting
I'll take a look, thanks.
