    I forgot all about Primus! I had a roommate who LOVED them, and I ended up going to their concert with him. The "seats" were just rows of grassey slopes and got pretty slick when they got wet. We got separated and I slipped in spilled beer and slid down a few rows. I was just like, "Oh. This is how I die. Stomped at a concert for a band where I only know two songs."
    But then some huge dude picked me up, set me back on my feet, and stood behind me the whole rest of the show to make sure I was okay. (Nobody even tried to grab my ass! It was great.) I never caught his name, but thank you, large kind man at Compton Terrace 20 something years ago!

    Part of the thing with the nachos in the video is the album this came from was titled Sailing the Seas of Cheese. The lead singer of Primus is Les Claypool and he is also the bass player. He is known as a world class bass player for his unusual technics of tapping, slapping, and flamenco style strumming. The bass is a main instrument in his songs. You really want another good one by them do "My Name Is Mud". Les acts out as the main character in that video... and he is a character... LOL 😁

  • @jamesjacobsk4ebb
    @jamesjacobsk4ebb 2 роки тому +19

    The singer's name is Les Claypool. Absolutely an influential bassist. His style of playing is unmatched by anyone else from the 90s on. Technically speaking, In theory, it is impossible to sing or even play lead over his style... but yet here they are doing it and doing it well! This was my first introduction to Primus back when they first came to light. Been a fan ever since! Tommy The cat is another great song to listen to next!

    • @johnplaysgames3120
      @johnplaysgames3120 2 роки тому +1

      Yeah, that's why their guitarist (Larry Lalonde) plays such noodly guitar over the top rather than any kind of traditional riffs or shredding. Because Les's basslines are so complex, the guitar kind of has to sit back and let the bass take the lead, otherwise it would get way too busy. Musical composition is always a balance and Primus flipped the script on how bands usually use the guitar-bass combo which is part of what gives them their unique sound.

    I know a bunch of people probably already said this, but the bassist and lead man for Primus is Les Claypool. This brings back memories from '90 ('91 ?) when this came out, I was working at Kemp Mill Records and bought Sailing the Seas of Cheese on a whim. A couple of my coworkers needed ride home that night, so we're just bouncing around to this in my car as we're driving all around Springfield, Alexandria, and Arlington on some weeknight. Cool how music can bring up the most random memories.

    I hope that when you eventually get to Tommy the Cat (probably their most well-known song), you do the album version and not get talked into the live version. It's hard enough to understand the lyrics in the studio. The live version would only give you an impression of the music. Cool, but you want to hear the full song, lyrics and music both. It's one of those live performances that's really good, and everyone wants to recommend it, but it should be heard AFTER being familiar with the studio version to be able to really appreciate it.

    The thing about Les Claypool's vocals. He was born in California, but he took the vocal style from a band he loved, which also happens to be my favorite band: the Residents. They're an avant-garde experimental rock band that's currently celebrating their official 50th anniversary. The band itself was based in San Francisco, but the members were from Louisiana. When I first heard Primus I thought it was the lead singer of the Residents (the band, except for a few members, is anonymous). A lot of what Primus does, like the costumes in "Winona's Big Brown Beaver", is a homage to them, right down to wearing a "Classic Eyeball" shirt during their appearance in "Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey".
    Don't know if the Residents would be something you'd necessarily like, but I would suggest "Constantinople" (audio only - not the video) or "Hello Skinny" (definitely with the official video) to start off with. Primus has actually done covers of both of those songs.

    What I love about this video is they actually recorded it by replaying the song several times at the same show and the pit would just get crazier every time.

    Les Claypole is the lead singer, bassist of the year for like 10 straight years and an unbelievable rabbit hole of music if your so inclined. John the fisherman is a 🔥 song

    Bassist/lead vocal Claypool was born in Richmond, California. He only sings with a mock accent.
    And not to forget the genius Larry Lalonde on guitar!
    'Sacred Cow' is another great one, that really slaps! (Literally and Figurative).

    The bass player & singer, is Les Claypool. He's a very talented musician, he used to play drums, but eventually moved over to bass. The members of Primus became close friends with the members of Rush after Primus opened for Rush on several tours, and Geddy actually incorporated a bit of Les' style in his playing, even though Les grew up loving Geddy as one of his main influences. The bass he's playing (mostly just tapping here,) is a 6 string fretless bass, and it takes a lot of technique to play those well. But Les also has about a million side projects going on nearly all the time, including "The Claypool Lennon Delirium" with Sean Lennon (son of The Beatles John Lennon & Yoko Ono,) "The Fearless Flying Frog Brigade," "Oysterhead," featuring Les Claypool, guitarist Trey Anastasio of Phish and drummer Stewart Copeland of The Police, and a really wild band, "Colonel Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains," featuring Les, Buckethead on guitar, Brain (formerly of "Sausage," was was Les' band before forming Primus,) and the late, great Bernie Worrell on Keyboards, best known for his work with Parliment & Funkadelic, as well as The Talking Heads! These are just a few of his side projects that come to mind off-hand!

    Ha, when I saw the title I lol'd, remembering especially Amber's face on the Big Brown Beaver reaction. I thought you were being very brave. But now, I think Primus just may grow on you guys! It took me a few listens back in the 90s. Rock on!

    Awesone Primus! My hometown "El Sob" in the house. Kirk Hammett (fellow class of 80) and Les Claypool (Class of 81) De Anza high. As the song says "El Sob number 1" So are both Kirk and Les in their field.

    One of their funkier and more cohesive tracks also has one of my favorite song names ever: "Shake Hands With Beef" - the drums and bass create such a hard groove.

    I LOVE Amber's reaction when it gets heavy. This is a Bay Area band that writes songs based in different cities in the Bay Area. El Sob is El Sobrante and Richmond are two cities in the Bay Area. I didn't understand that until I moved up there, and then when I heard the lyrics back, I was like, "Yep, that's what these places are like." Also, the song is supposed to be what a band sounds like when Sailing the Seas of Cheese, which is the album where this song comes from.

    You guys were so freaked out about Wynona's Big Brown Beaver that I thought you'd never get back to it. Les Claypool is truly one of the greatest base players of all time. I admit they are a bit of an acquired taste, but once you get it, you'll love it! Oh, did either of you notice, Les was only wearing Longjohns?

    Gotta react to the live version of Jethro Tull “My God” (Isle of Wight1970). Ian Anderson has only been playing the Flute for about 2 years and was considered one of the best flute players. You will absolutely be entertained.

    Growing up going to tons of shows in the 90’s I’ve been in countless mosh pits and seen plenty of hard bands but the only time I feared for my safety was when I saw primus in Orlando around 96 at the embassy. It was craziest energy. Fucking amazing! Everything was so heavy, so hard!

    Primus, and especially the bassist Les Claypool, love writing songs about the shenanigans and problems that happen in small town USA. This is one of those songs, and it's only about a small town racecar driver killing himself drunk driving and an aging firefighter who was forced to retire even though he was still "strong as any man alive"

    Les Claypool is the singer/bassist. He is widely considered to be one of the greatest bassists of all time. To say Primus is an acquired taste is putting it lightly. I am a huge fan of Primus, I have seen them live several times. I would suggest checking out "John The Fisherman", "Tommy The Cat", and "Shake Hands With Beef".
