He's actually (and admits it) "borrowing" from a song called "Elephant Talk" by the 1980's incarnation of the band King Crimson, who he was a fan of. The original song has what is called a "Chapman Stick," and instrument with 10-12 strings you play by tapping only, and was played by he great Tony Levin, who most famously worked with Peter Gabriel.

He was in a band called Possessed before Primus, their demo called "Death Metal" and the death metal band "Death" are how the genre got it's name.

That "Claypool" guy opened a few doors that are still open today. Primus isn't just a band, it's also a wonderful place to visit.
Ha! I used to produce a fanzine (it was the early 90s, therefore pre interweb). I was (and am) a massive Primus fan and asked the record company if I could interview them (as was easy in those days when record companies were happy for any publicity). It was arranged that I would interview Primus. When I arrived there was only Mr Claypool there - he was an absolute gent. I had a few questions written down in my notebook, the first one being 'do you put that voice on?'. When he said hello I realised he didn't ha! He was a lovely bloke, realised I was very nervous, so he ordered us tea and we spent an hour or so discussing our favourite rides at Disneyland. Gorgeous bloke
The volume in the video is actually normal; everything nowadays is mastered too loud. It was a long time ago, before the loudness wars sucked the dynamic range out of everything.

Saw them in 1991 in Knoxville TN. Fishbone opened for them. I jumped up and down non stop for 3 hours. Felt it the next day. I think I paid $10. Good memories
The volume was lower because that was before the music industry machine decided louder was better. Everything got an eq compression later on that leveled everything out so that nothing clipped, but it was all just under clipping, which translates to everything was made louder. Back in the day, you could actually differentiate between the loud and the quiet parts. There was also quite a bit more usage of the left and the right channels. You literally had to listen to both headphones to get the whole "picture" as sometimes one guitar was on left and not on the right, or sometimes even more extreme like the vocals came in only one ear and not the other.
So glad you are doing reactions to Primus. They have always been and will always be one of my favorite bands. Three of the most talented musicians out there- and they can be both entertaining, goofy, and comical, but also very deep and serious from one song to another. Some of their tunes are thrash funk, others are crazy experimental jams, and they can flow from one to the other seamlessly. Check out their "Primus and the Chocolate Factory", live if possible, where they cover the entire Charlie and the Chocolate Factory soundtrack. Also, it so happens that Les Claypool is a big fan of Rush, and is good friends with the band.
The thing with the nachos : The name of the album that song is on is "Sailing the Seas of Cheese", and that claymation at the end was stuff from the album cover.
From what I gather the reason these two stories are related is because Captain Pierce was the fireman who unwrapped Jerry from the telephone pole which is what led to Pierce's retirement.

Though Primus never tried to be mainstream, their cult following is composed of some of the most talented and respected artists in the industry and has inspired countless newbies to experiment and to just “be” as a musician. On every Blind Melon recording one of the guitarists was always in the left channel and the other always in the right. Really made a unique sound.
