      Thanks Chris. I think that along with a decent proportion of the TPS audience, you’re here to help your own journey. I think the people who moan about the talking are those who just want us to tell them the destination. As we know, that is not how this works! We’re very, very proud to have you as our fam!

    Now I know why tape echo is so captivating: it's a microcosm of all the effects you could have on a board. Aside from the obvious timely replication of delay, it also has gain staging, compression, tone shaping, modulation. (Pitch or octave is maybe the only effect not present.) Thanks for spelling that circuit out on its own board!

    • @shaft9000
      @shaft9000 9 місяців тому

      well, a clever EE can put most any modular synth circuit into a pedal (or vice-versa into the synth) with the right impedance and signal level,
      so there's still lots more:
      Sequencing (some Zvex, Moog MuRF do a little), more-extensive-than-fuzz Waveshaping , Envelope followers controlling more than just auto-wah, frequency shifting (NOT pitch-shifting, check out the "Bode Shifter" it's incredible), multimode filters/ fixed filter-bank/vocoder, ringmodulator and balanced (thru-zero + linear) FM, additive synthesis, Karpluss-Strong ("pitched" delay), bit-reduction, granular "glitch" sampling, more sophisticated PLL apps than Miku stomp, etc. Some play well with a guitar better than others, and some are better suited to mix processing rather than printing the effect while the part is recorded. I've yet to try half of it so far, myself.
      ^^ An Empress Zoia is probably the cheapest path to getting your brain wet with a fair number of these functions/effects,^^ to some degree or another :)
      btw, "modulation" is an automated sweep of a pot by means of a control oscillator or envelope;, not an effect per se

    OMG - the deconstruction of a pedal into its component elements is an inspired format. Can you PLEASE have this a regular feature, in its own right. Make a chorus out of delay pedals. Make a Klone from voltage doublers and gain stages. Make a univibe by standing in a dark room with 4 torches. Much respect.

    the thing with TPS is that you talk about details and I learned a lot from you two.
    From gain stacking, compression, EQ, dynamics, boosts, amps, etc.. I knew what I felt when I was hating or enjoying my tone but watching you every week made me understand why I enjoy or hate and how to make it sound better. Thanks!

  • @ebeep
    @ebeep 4 роки тому +47

    Consider this idea for a moment:
    Once a month or so, put together a crazy signal chain. Pull some stuff off the wall and see what happens. What do 5 choruses sound like together? I'm sure you can both dream up amazing pedal interactions and feedback loops with use of Wetter boxes. New sounds await you!
    MBV and Cocteau Twins gave us sonic palettes that didn't exist before, just by exploring new combinations. Who knows what could happen!
    It could be a once a month disaster, or it could be awe inspiring. Either way, I'm certain it would be good fun.

    I am definitely making my weekend project designing a faux tape delay on my Zoia. One of the best things about that pedal is that it teaches you what components do what, and it really helps me when hearing the real thing. Great episode, thanks!
    FOLLOW UP: So I did this, and what is fascinating, but I guess unsurprising, is that it’s the interplay between the preamp, the compression, and the filter that makes the magic. I think naively I’d probably have imagined it was more the warble, however minimal, from the vibrato that makes it sound tape-like but that’s not true at all. You can tweak the compression and filter one way and it sounds like a bucket brigade delay, with minimal tweaks it sounds more like tape. It’s incredible to me that the tiniest adjustments have such profound effects, and it deepens my respect for pedal designers who control this weird multi variable alchemy in their work every day.
    Zoias, combined with TPS, are such great learning tools. I now understand so much more about how and why certain echos and delays sound as they do, but their effect upon me when I play them is still magical.

    That is so xxx clever to rebuild a tape machine using pedals! A joy to watch.

    When you play the Fulltone at the intro I melt. Then you go through all the other pedals and they sound great. Then again you play the Fulltone and I melt. There’s something magic in there that even mega obsessive genius modern pedal makers can’t achieve.

    Great show guys! That tape delay pedalboard Dan built was fantastic! So cool how that worked!

    Been watching since the GigRig days of the channel and just wanted to say this might have been my favorite episode ever! VERY COOL rig that Dan put together. Great playing and great conversation as always. Good vibes all around, especially given everything going on at the moment. Be well, guys. Cheers!

    Great idea Dan! I rearranged one pedal (compressor) on my current board to achieve something similar. For this effect I go Broadcast(Low Gain mode)>Cali76 Stacked>Jam Pedals Retrovibe (Vibrato Mode)>Jam Pedals Delay Llama. Hudson and Cali on dry loop (both amps) the rest on wet amp...the kicker is using the dry signal on the Cali76 and the relative volume between wet/dry amps to do something similar to the Wetter Box. First time I've ever put my comp after gain stages. Great fun.

    Wow! When you ran through all of them in series and then switched back to the fulltone it became instantly clear that none of the pedals sounded anywhere close to the actual tape. It reminded me of the difference between the 2 dimensional sound of a cab ir and the more three dimensional sound of an actual mic'd cab. They all sounded great but nothing like the actual tape. Oooohhh this is going to get expensive haha. I did want to say that I bought an APE after watching your demo and it is glorious with all my delays but in particular I really like it with my DD-3. You have to plug a dummy jack into the direct out to get it 100% wet. Worth a listen when Dan is allowed back to the studio. Great show guys thanks!

    Yeah, Dan's "tape delay" board is my favorite sound in this episode. Especially that dirty slap Outlaw Blues kinda thing Mick was doing with it.....killer killer killer. Thanks for your endless curiosity, gents. You do the hard (and quite expensive) work for the rest of us. Been watching for a year and a half and it just never gets old. Thanks for everything, dudes.

    Love when you look at delays, always learn a lot. Would love to see a whole show on putting modulation effects like flanger or phaser into a delay pedal’s effects loop like an EHX Memory Boy Deluxe or Solid Gold FX Electroman 2. Keep up the good work!

    thank you for the distraction chaps.
    I have become a Grandad in all the madness (yesterday the 9th April) while my housemate and dear friend lost his father to cancer.
    I have coped outside of the limited permitted contact with my family by chaining a load of delay and reverb pedals together and doing a daily Hans Zimmer / Brian Eno 3 minute meditation to positively express my frustration.
    Thank you so much for all you do. Sometimes it's nothing short of a lifeline.
    Yours sincerely
    Kelvin

    That was killer. Part 2 was spectacular. That was the best explanation of a tape echo I have ever heard. I thought the "LEGO" tape echo you assembled was actually my favorite. All units sounded fantastic as well as both of your playing (as always.) Thank you!

    Absolutely fascinating episode, what Dan did creating his Frankenstein tape delay thing was incredible, kudos to him, playing by both of you was tremendous as well, the Fulltone TTE is an amazing machine but the others tape delay pedals were great as well, what isolation fun !!
