Yes! I’m pretty sure the beginning credits to every episode of Gerry Anderson’s Joe 90 had a closeup of a tape loop unwinding. I was probably 5 at the time and just thought it was bizarre - I knew it was tape but had no clue what it was...
It is special "Lubricated": tape that is no longer made. They call it a "Bin" I have seen giant 2" tape bins for high speed Cassette duplication running that were taller than me at an angle 7 or 8 feet. the bin reduces capstan problems and is continuous. I always liked watching a new piece of tape load in a Roland. They came in little soft plastic boxes about the size of Tic Tacs
People also forget that Les was one of the first to experiment with DI recording (hence his low impedance pickups) and multi-track recording. Musicians owe so much to this dude that was a monster on the guitar.
popeye Reading about how Les Paul invented multi tracking & re-creating it for myself with 2 cassette decks & a mini Soundcraft mixer was probably one of the most important things in my life as a musician. (I did it exactly once and then bought my first Tascam PortaStudio)
What a wonderful vintage piece! Tommy Bolin used echoplex on sooo many great records from rock to jazz fusion. My favorite that he played on was Billy Cobham Spectrum album. I saw Jeff Beck a few years ago and he played a song from that album Stratus. Tommy Bolin is a long lost wonderful talent taken too early from drug OD.
Honestly I've wondered for a while if technically Hollywood films did multitrack first. The Wizard of Oz has seperate tracks for sfx, music, and dialogue, and Disney's Fantasia is the first movie in surround sound.
Don’t forget his wife. She was also using the multi-tracking to get killer sounds. They sold 5 or 6 million records in just the 50s. I know Les was the tech guy, but she was so open to new technology, and could use it well. I remember in high school when I first came across videos of them performing and talking, and I just thought, “damn, he found the perfect woman. She’s beautiful, can sing beautifully, and is a badass on guitar! What more could I ever want?”
Bruce Morris I used to do that with cassette decks, and plugging straight into cassette deck in stereo, after my other 2 cassette decks that played my pre recorded music, then I played lead on top of them. It was ridiculous. 🤣
In the late ‘60’s I had a Watkins Copycat. We used to let the tape loops wear out before changing them, so the repeats got darker and darker. We also used to deliberately slow down the capstan roller with a finger to get random modulation effects, and I liked playing with a tape that had been caught up in the works at some point and was all crinkled, so it gave random drop-outs and modulation. I also experimented with a tape that I joined in a mobius loop so it would alternate from normal side to back side....

The complete history of tape echo: Caveman discovered his voice sounded weird when he walked inside his cave after being outside. Decided he liked it, started banging rocks together, 10,000 years later this is where Josh's story kicks in.
The Shadows did not use the Watkins Copycat. Hank Marvin himself, the lead guitarist, always said he used a Meazzi Echomatic, built in Italy. And there is photographic evidence of him using this unit in live shows from 1960 until probably 1963 ou 1964. Then he changed to a Binson and, later, to a Baby Binson. Great video!
In the early 90's, I saw an NOS Univox tape echo for sale for $75 at a music store closeout. When I got it home, I noticed it didn't come with a tape cassette, and the store didn't have any for sale, so I got my money back. I still kick myself for that. A couple of years later, I found out how easy it was to find tapes for them.
Sean Kerns Hey can you tell me where I can get those cassettes? I've got a Univox tape echo that I bought used in the '80s and I gave up trying to find cassettes for it years ago. It would be awesome to fire it up again!

My friend had bought it to flip it. Didn't even know how to turn it on. A few months later, he offered it to me for $1000, and I had to pass it up, because I didn't have the cash.
Great episode Josh! I recently purchased a 1965 Gibson GA4-RE Reverb Echo Tel Ray oil can delay w/ foot switch at an estate sale . I didn’t even know these existed but when I saw the motor and the tubes I had to have it. After cleaning it up I plugged it in and the Motor still turned, changed a tube an it works. Josh, first off, I'm a long time watcher, first time commenting ( I'm not shy, just Canadian). You need never apologize for the amount of gear you have, Sir. Your abundance of gear might sound boastful but in reality without your obsession with guitar gear you might never felt the need to mod an existing pedal to improve it, thus making many more people happy to have a new tone, or option to use to create a new tone. Really, isn't that what this is all about? As for Les Paul, I have to go with some of his work with Mary Ford. Legendary of course is "How High the Moon" but closer to my heart is "Goodnight Irene" which was the name of my Wife who passed away two years ago. At 49 she lost her battle with type 1 diabetes and now at 53 to help cope with the loss of her I bought a guitar and an amp and am learning to play because you are never too old to learn. I really like the videos you and Nick put out, I love learning about all the pedals out there and the history of the most popular effects. Please keep up the great work!! Take care - Dave
One of the reasons these vids are made...to show off his gear. If he needs to apologize, don't film yourself with all those pedals and amps in the background !!
Never had any interest in Les Paul and until your video's in delay. Now I'm listening to a spotify compilation of Les Paul and I'm amazed. Thanks! I guess I have to test delay in the fx loop and in front now.
Oh I say talk for days and days mate... I’ve been all over this topic and this is one EPIC video. Will give Rhett some credit as well. Mapping all this to run tape echo emulations across platforms has become an obsession. You just gotta touch these things.
1:37 Are you sure it's 1945? I believe tape machines had not yet been “exported” out of Nazi Germany by 1945. A more likely date is 1949, the year Les Paul got his first Ampex tape machine from Bing Crosby, who had gotten first first reel-to-reel 2 years prior to that. All according to Wiki :)
I've recorded through a Space Echo and it sounded amazing. No digital copy or plug in has came close! it is a highlight of my years playing guitar so far.

Epic Tape Echo history! The self oscillation at the end of Eruption by Eddie Van Halen is a Univox EC 80a Echo Chamber. Cranks up echo repeat and turns down echo delay at end during fade-out. A classic moment in the history of tape echo!
My Korg SE-300 definitely sounds more "Hi-Fi" than my RE-201... less hum and noise, the spring is darker and less splashy than the Roland. Love them both :)
The other nice thing about the Korg is that since you switch tape heads with a button rather than turning a knob, you can flip back and forth between different delay lengths easily and instantaneously, so it's very easy to make fancy dub moves on it. Although the RE-201 definitely sounds more like the units they used in classic dub songs

UNI VOX ECHO-TECH SOUNDED AMAZING !!! Eddie Vanhalen used a particular univox on "Eruption" at the end of that song ( sounds like a dive bomb, but is the pitch dropping from slowing down repeats ) Amazing gear I have never seen for sale in newspaper or local music stores back in the '90s!
In the world of guitar effects, delay--and specifically tape delay--is my Love Language. So, I'm just going to take this whole video as Josh saying he loves me. ...Just a friendly love, nothing weird.
In the studio we would just pull the tape out in between 2 decks and let it wrap around a mic stand. You would just move the stand to different tape marks or later knotches on the floor for delay times. We would even smack the tape as it went around with a ribbon Mic to erase, modulate and degrade the repeats. So much fun!
These are the tastiest jams I have ever seen on this channel (setting aside the running with the devil PG jam as its own amazing thing). the EP3 demo was awesome man. Great groove
So, I see Josh's face in the thumbnail and I read tape echo in the title. So, I says to myself "Hmmm, this might be interesting." And you know what? I enjoyed every millisecond of it of it of it of it of it of it ..................
I'd love it if this video was just a teaser and he went into more detail on each echo in separate videos. More cool topics to cover would be other mechanical effect units like reverb and tremolo.

You just keep knocking it out of the park.
I watch a lot of guitar and gear channels but I enjoy your vids so much. Probably #1 of them all.
YESSSSS. I'm obsessed with tape delay!
Never had any interest in Les Paul and until your video's in delay. Now I'm listening to a spotify compilation of Les Paul and I'm amazed. Thanks! I guess I have to test delay in the fx loop and in front now.
5:25 I was really hoping to hear this squeaking sound you described, could be fun.
Familiar Unknown didn’t Bing put money into Ampex.
really great episode! I use a Tape Echo Pedal, so its cool to see how it started and all the different versions.
*hits pause, gets up to grab a snack*
I've recorded through a Space Echo and it sounded amazing. No digital copy or plug in has came close! it is a highlight of my years playing guitar so far.
You left out Meazzi (Italian). Hank B. Marvin himself, in at least one interview, showed his original; said it was the one he used on Apache.
He got it from Joe Brown!!!
@@rickyjones7282
"Joe Brown"?
@@docwill184 English Rock & Roll session legend who was part of the backing band who performed with the American Rock & Roll singers when they came over to this side of the Atlantic Ocean!!
He also had a band "Joe Brown & His Bruvers" who had a huge hit with Pictures Of You.
George Harrison was his best man for his third wedding!!
Joe Brown is still alive & extremely active in the music business & also has a famous daughter Sam Brown who has had loads of success especially in the 1980's!!
Correct @Doc Will. Hank didn't use the Watkins Copicat for Apache as Josh said in the video; he used a Meazzi Echomatic Model 1J.
@@PhilipHawthorne Hank B Marvin never used a Watkins Copycat.
I'm glad these videos are only once a week or I would have no life. Then, again, this is life. Keep 'em coming!
Josh accidentally made a decent mogwai album recording this video.
that Multi Echo part sounded straight up like Envy
Fantastic! Thanks so much JHS - it’s brilliant that you put so much effort into these videos and you often don’t even mention your own products. True altruism!
You're wrong about the Shadows with the Watkins Copycat!!!Hank B Marvin uses an Italian Measi tape echo unit which he got from another mega legend Joe Brown!
Hank B Marvin later used Binson's & his final tape echo was a Roland Space Echo.Hank B Marvin then moved on to using a Allesis Quadroverb modified with "Echoes From The Past"!
I just thought I'd correct you!!
Super cool episode. Nick, your drumming on the EP-3 jam is stupendous!
I tried watching this video once, but it played on repeat 3 times ... All on its own
You gotta turn your repeats down.
I am in LOVE with that guitar's body and color scheme
Josh: Clearly sssooo over tube screamers.
Also Josh: builds the ultimate tube screamer to end all tube screamers.
Also Josh: picks the ts10 over bonsai for this video.
...who are you?
7:30 Watching the tape is kind of like staring at a lava lamp. Mesmerising.
These are the tastiest jams I have ever seen on this channel (setting aside the running with the devil PG jam as its own amazing thing). the EP3 demo was awesome man. Great groove
I kinda live my life in a delay. The bad stuff keeps repeating.
Change tapes...

Give your life to Jesus and it will turn around
@@josephwright5921 I'm not sure that's true.
Joseph Wright: Get a new tape and give the old cassette to Jesus for erasing, symbolically, of course.
So, I see Josh's face in the thumbnail and I read tape echo in the title. So, I says to myself "Hmmm, this might be interesting." And you know what? I enjoyed every millisecond of it of it of it of it of it of it ..................
I'm having a burrito while watching this. Can life get any better?
thaaatguy R&M Yes: add cerveza.
Watching now because this episode deserves full attention
Josh: "I would love to talk about it for days but I can't because I'd lose your interest"
Me: "Challenge accepted"
I'd love it if this video was just a teaser and he went into more detail on each echo in separate videos.
More cool topics to cover would be other mechanical effect units like reverb and tremolo.
Everyone is drooling, crying, and wishing they could just have a couple of these units! Thank for this episode! I love all of these videos!
I like the EP-2... Sounds more open to me... 🤷🏻♂️
I agree, I own an EP-2 and had a choice between 1-3. It's all about the tubes for my taste
His ep2 was actually the Echoplex sir, Echo...
@@stjames3410 His Ep-2 wasn't an Ep-s, it was actually a Sireko, which was an economy model of the Echoplex. I am lucky enough to own an EP-2 that was serviced by Mike Battle when he owned Tubeplex.
wow, that was a really wonderful trip through history. Thanks for that and all these great videos/lessons, you're really helping a lot of people understand this world of endless tonal possibilities.
Josh: "Grab a snack--"
Me: "Am I on Isaac Arthur's channel?"
LOL! No slack! Hahahaha.... (PS Isaac is a smart dude & loves all things outer space & rocketry!)
I'm sure it's better for views or the UA-cam algorithm, but I really miss when you guys posted on Thursdays. No one posts anything special on Thursdays whereas Fridays are filled with That Pedal Show and other channels doing special videos. JHS was what made Thursdays special. Anyway, love the content as always!
Gah, that Echoplex just has that fonky chonky. I typically favor copies of the EP. But I also love the Space Echo too.
Brian Setzer said it best of the Echoplex - You look at it, it goes out of tune lol. Why he uses the Roland
@@circuitsandcigars1278 I've owned a EP-4 for 20 years. Bought it off an old honky-tonk guitar player. He told me he spilled a lot of drinks on it and it looks like it. Works perfectly. Setzer is overstating his opinion.
My God all these crazy new delay units that I never heard of! I have a (non tape obvs) Phonic DDU 3000 1u which is kindof special.
Now does the Binson Echorec qualify as a “tape” echo? It used a magnetic drum instead of tape.
Also, Josh, there are original Binson units available on Reverb all the time. There were even a handful of dead mint units up for sale a few months ago that were brand new, but 100% made out of original NOS parts. They were positively stunning.
i was gonna say, binson isn't tape
Josh, you're just great. Thanks for making this.
WAIT!
STOP EVERYTHING!
There's a new JHS video.
And Nick?.... You are stone cold awesome!!! Thank you so very much for backing Josh up. So, yeah, jus' sayin'.
No doubt the guitar tone is wonderful, but Nick, how did you get that snare sound? Sounds really smooth! Great video, btw.
They use the Colourbox on it.
Always sound amazing!
There is a video where Nick explains how he records his drums - FYI
Love it! I feel like I'm taking a class, I've learned so much and your jam session are awesome. Hello from Puerto Rico!
was waiting for the klon episode
Brazil! and not just the tape delay but multitrack tape recording. also the "chester and Lester" reckid he made with chet atkins is a must have.
I wish I still had my EP-3. A music store was blowing them out as I remember, and I bought a few. I lost interest and sold them. :(
That Korg sounds epic! The whole vid was such an education. Stumbled across it as I'm in the market for a tape echo atm. Will be following more of your content fno. many thanks.
Don't be sorry for having too much gear.
It's ok. We understand and still love you!
XD
Josh, I can hear in your playing how passionate you are about these tape echo devices ! Best jams so far :-)
