Dan's tone was a thing of beauty. I thought he was going to struggle with the pedels he drew, but he really made them work with that lovely guitar & amp combo.
Long time fan but the invoking of Noel’s knobs has brought me so much joy. First because he said what many of us think I’m sure. Second because Noel. I mean what a legend.
Holy expletive! fantastic tones all around today! There’s nothing like hearing Mick with a good fuzz, and I’m glad to see the gretsch getting some love.
Fun show guys! I love this format of just trying random pedals because it's interesting to see you guys discovering something new. I also think we can all relate to ordering a pedal online, opening it up for the first time, and trying to figure out how the dang thing works- so in a way it's fun to watch you guys puzzle through this stage as well. Thanks!
Loved the show. I like the challenges because it gets you two gents thinking and teaches us how to approach pedals. I’ve learned loads from watching the show!
I love the videos with the practical 'make the board' section, made even more relatable when Mick makes comment of how bloody hot it is in the room as he's putting the board together. These video's also always make me pick up a guitar while i'm watching. Great fun as usual!
Dan and Mick, loved the episode. This is so much fun. We’ve been doing something similar to this over on the Palen Music channel and it’s been so inspiring to find new tones. If you want an extra level of difficulty I have my daughter pick three random pedals from the whole collection and she sets the pedal order for the board. It makes for a tough challenge when she goes reverb fuzz chorus but it’s led to some amazingly fun sounds.
Great show, nice run-thru of a good batch of pedals, and great variety of tones. Mick, thanks for the buffer follow-up in the "Show Description" info, good to know. Cheers!
Just got my first electric rig together thanks to Dan and Mick's insight, and felt obliged to order every thing I could from That Pedal Shop. I'm talking patch/TS cables, an assortment of pedals, and a power source. I couldn't be happier with the experience. The goods arrived fast, I am across the pond, and in perfect working order. I am particularly pleased with the D&M Drive, as well as, the Mythos Oracle Analog Echo. The first go at cranking the 65 Reverb Deluxe RI was magic, not to mention all other subsequent times too, especially for a strictly acoustic player. Well done boys, and thank you.
I REALLY liked the Wicked Game quote as the rising pitch of the dipped note sounds smoother on the Bigsby than ive ever heard on a vintage Strat trem...
I’ve had a song I’ve been working on for a few months and couldn’t quite figure out what it needed. Listening to Dan play the galaxy just unlocked it for me. Thank you for the inspiration!
I'm an old school traditional boat builder. Worked for a year or two re-fitting super yachts and every bit that isn't structural is held together with 3M tape. Madness. Great for a pedal board, grips like fu*k, not so hot on a super yacht.
Great show fellas. You guys seemed to be in better than average spirits. Nice to see Dan's big Gretsch make an appearance. Refreshing. The fact that the 3 newest UA pedals made it out of that bag is uncanny 😉
Im seriously half way in and have to make a statement here...Listening to that AC30 going into crunch was giving me some serious goosebumps...cant imagine what it must have been like in the room! Awesomeness just from a guitar and an amp. Also, would have loved to hear Micks board into something like a Fender Pro Junior. Seems like 3 pedals "can" be everthing you need...
The AC30 is truly magic. Mick here. As it happens I've asked Fender to loan us two Pro Juniors. I want to see if my wet-dry board would work into them. I think it will!
@@ThatPedalShow Running my wet dry board in a Pro Junior and a Blues Junior I can assure you it works wonderfully. Im running both IV versions. Coupling means a tad more Bass. Its a magic thing wet dry, got you 2 to thank for that. Make a video about it if you find the time...my guess is there is loads of people out there running smaller amps that need to be infected!
I haven’t even got through the video all the way and I just love the amount of laughter and fun you are having with this. I’m expecting my belly to hurt from all the laughter and my ears to love the tones from the Tonemasters and Fathers of Fuzz.
The UA Max is a truly magic pedal, particularly with single coil git-fiddles (nudge, nudge - TELE!!!)! The flexibility of the 1176 and LA2A pickups PLUS the classic 610 tube preamp, it is my absolute favorite addition of 2023. Pushing the 610 preamp gives you a glorious grit, especially into the 1176. I keep the LA2A side for clean and warm playing. Spend some time with it, Dan - It will make you and Butters smile!!!

That loose jam was mind blowing! Just awesome!! ❤️
Love this format! Proves that you can get amazing tones out of any combination. Creativity in its true sense. Would love you to revisit this format once in a while. Have a great weekend toes!
Watching you blokes learn new pedals is both informative and cathartic. But man, Mick’s rig would last me to the end of my days. Vintage Strat, Klon, BB, Fuzz, Delay and Reverb all into a Two-Rock? Perfection.
This makes me think of a new challenge.... Both contestants build 2 boards (approximately $1000/lbs). Board 1 is a few high-end pedals, board 2 is a commoners board with multiple gains, modulation, delay, verb etc. (Use the best quality u can afford in a fully functioning gigable board).... then see which approach makes the most sense. I.e. Quality vs. Quantity.
1:03:09 - Dan gave the eyes early doors during the Boss delay video the previous week and I had fingers crossed for another classic wig-out. Putting the mortgage on another classic improv-journey before we finish in this episode! Love Mr S’s ambient playing. Always takes him to somewhere magical.
Another terrific episode of TPS. The pedals featured were cool, but what I liked most was hearing Dan and Mick play. And when they played together (improvised, I think), it was a real treat for fans like me. Thanks, lads!
As always, watching you guys play inspires me to play. Stunning playing and some very interesting voicings. I would like to make a suggestion. It's great that we got to see you changing the settings on the pedal. But I would love it if you could split the screen so we can see the pedals being dialed in, but also see you playing. I love the sounds and chords you play but would love to see what you are playing. Since watching your interview with Noel Gallagher, I have picked up the guitar every day since. Thanks for that. 👍
p.s. Agree that there are no losers today. I kept thinking everyone kept winning. What was most fascinating was the resourcefulness. Anyone could easily see problems with each man's draw but the actual end results were incredibly adaptive and the noises were beautiful. Win-Win!
Great sounding pedals and setups, but the real star today was the PLAYING! Dans playing during the setup was as pretty as I’ve ever heard him play which then inspired Mick into another moment of beautiful, pretty, pretty guitar. Fantastic stuff guys. Dan for the win this time. Lemonade from a ball bag of lemons.
Reverb and Delay, when done well, puts me in an altered state. For over an hour you two guys coaxed me into Dreamland. Really really nice! and out of a grab bag. Wow!
Dan you found the tone i've been searching for! Galaxy, Vox, Gretsch = Stunning. You could tell Dan loved it by how long he kept playing uninterrupted. Great video TPS!
I love a TPS challenge video. What I took from this episode is that : We don’t see enough of Dan and Mick both playing together at the same time. More please 🙏🏻 Also I’d love to see you guys have Dave Simpson on the show. You use the ultimate top shelf gear and I’d love to see a TPS take on Daves solid state amps and attainable affordable pedals.
For the challenge I’ll give it to Mick, that dual drive with the Two Rock and that Strat is a pretty spectacular sound BUT just the Gretsch straight through the AC30 and the guitar’s volume knob is the real winner for me, what a glorious thing.
Big thumbs up and guffaws for the nod to Aussie band Supernauts "I Like It Both Ways"....what happens when you have an Aussie in your midst...Dan is rubbing off on you ...oo'er missus... If we're doing challenges, how about you each make a covers gig Boss board (I'm not sure this works with any other brand), but you both lose any duplicates - shafting your opponent (say by including every pedal ever) is encouraged.
So entertaining. Thank you 🙏🏻 love your sounds as always. I was surprised by the amount of overdrive the MAX can create. How is that working? Carry on with everything you do. You’ve made my day sooo many times. Really do appreciate the challenges. Also the older ones. So inspiring. Love and greetings from Austria 🇦🇹 ❤ Philipp
Hello Philipp! We didn't explain it very well, but that red knob on the Max is actually a model of a UA 610 preamp! That's got some great drive in it. Cheers!
Really cool to see Dan playing a Gretsch and loving it! Big Gretsch fan here - Took me a while to understand them but once I did, I rarely play anything else now!
From 36:00 to 36:45 in the video when Dan was using UA MAX, I could hear some artifacts that didn’t sound natural. Wondering why. Anyone else hears it? Is it because of the modeling inside? I have used UAD plug-ins a lot but don’t remember hearing that kind of artifact.
I’ve had the 83’ for a while and love it. Very interested in the UA Max - seems to cover a lot of the tweaks that I often look for to supplement the the standard effects. The fuzz is monstrous, like all of Ffjord’s pedals.
A nice way to use the UA Max would be to set the FET with fast attack and release to cut the peaks, then into the LA2A with a slower attack and release to thicken things up. Like how those 2 comps would be used in a studio mix on a vocal, for instance. Two smaller amounts of compression in series can be nicer than 1 comp working harder, the main benefit of a dual comp pedal.
You guys should do the same thing with random guitar, 3 random pedals, and a random amp. For the pedals, you then have to have them in a random order. Of course, using the jiggling bingo ball bag.
Mick, just to say that when you were trying to reassure us that just because three UA products were picked it was still “random” anyone who has watched TPS before has no problems believing in its randomness 🤔😉🤣🤣🤣
As a long time fan of TPS, Mick and Dan, I am very sad that I can't watch the show anymore. Last week, I woke up with SSNHL in my left ear (sudden hearing loss). It is being treated, but the prognosis is unclear. I can't play guitar anymore because I can't stand sound at this moment. I hope to recover and enjoy the show again in the near future. For now, I will miss you guys. 😢 For the people reading this: if you experience sudden hearing loss, seek medical help as fast as you can. Time is very important for the prognosis of recovery. Don't mess with your ears!
Marvellous stuff. I often think that Mick's strat playing sounds like he has a compressor hidden somewhere! Something about the way the notes swell - maybe it's the loud amp thing. Cheers Gents.
That’s interesting! Mick here. That’s always what I want to hear - kind of a bloom - so maybe there’s something in the way I play that facilitates it. And you’re right that volume definitely facilitates it! :0)
Ah man, I was really hoping one of you would get the Foxcatcher - it has the Gravity Bomb in it from the boost show a couple of weeks back - which had me absolutely rolling with laughter when you said "You know, I think this would do really well if it had an overdrive before it" because the other part of the pedal is a Bluesbreaker-type circuit!!! I just really want to hear one played by you guys, because it's one of those things where I'm a bit hesitant on it because I've not heard it played by someone I really trust their opinion as of yet. The Andertons guys have played it but didn't ask all the questions of the pedal I'd have liked them to have asked. However, absolutely great episode - absolutely delighted to see Dan's Gretsch coming out, and I laughed, because when Mick had just played the K-style part of the Nordvang after the fuzz, I went "Yeah, I want a bit more brightness taking out of that" - and about 5 seconds later, Mick said the exact same thing! Gave me a very good giggle! If you are going to do this again, Mick, please pull out the Collings Junior! I have to say, the UA stuff was cool, but it did make me think, would I really buy both of those pedals when I could just buy a RE-202, get a reverb I like from that and get a multihead delay (which I could have just a single head on) and it would cost me half of buying both of the UA pedals... some may argue you'd only need the Del-verb but then there's no multihead function...! But maybe that says more about where I am than the pedals themselves - because they did sound good. The reverbs in the Del-Verb especially! Once again, no answers in my comment, only better questions...
You two really sacked up this time. Also, during the ball drawing, the numbers-related phrases did remind me of The True History of the Traveling Wilburys. Where George describes sitting around with his mates (Dylan, Petty, Orbison and Lynn...) and coming up with random statements for Handle Me With Care. It's a very worthwhile and inspiring 28 minutes, or so, if anyone hasn't seen it.
Great episode, loved that jam at the end too.. you guys need to get to get back out there gigging. As Dan said on VCQ "Let's get the band back together". The Drawn From A Ballbag tour 😂 No losers, you both smashed it imho
Loved this one guys and gal!.....Listen to the James Wilsey album El Dorado, the guitarist from the first four Chris Isaak albums. One of my favorite guitarist. RIP. Y'all have a great weekend! Love from New Orleans
I'd like to be (probably not) the first person to say that you should do more mini jam sessions like that towards the end of shows, particularly ones like this. Great show as always, need to get my act together and do a Superchat for VCQ about channel jumping soon 🙂
D&M, another great video! I was especially interested in your technique and rationale for establishing your “core” amplifier settings based on what pedals you were about to use. I thought this discussion/demonstration was very useful for us home-gamers. I’d love to see a similar discussion on setting up two different amps in a wet-dry application for a typical pedalboard. Cheers!!
Dan's tone was a thing of beauty. I thought he was going to struggle with the pedels he drew, but he really made them work with that lovely guitar & amp combo.
NEVER stop doing these challenge episodes, regardless of how they may look on paper. ❤

Hey, that’s the name of my bowling team!
The star of the show: the AC30 What a killer amp! Great show as always!

I love how this started as a daft and suitably silly concept and became a brilliant journey of tonal discovery.

I personally love this situation you guys have put yourself in. Please do more. pick three completely random pedals and figure them out and jam.

Wondered why this was such a long video, then watched the first three minutes and it all became clear 😂
I LOVE a little That Pedal Show on a saturday morning!
Love the jam you guys did at the end
42. The Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything. 😆
This is so fun, fellas! Love this video idea and hope to see more ✌️
I'd like to be (probably not) the first person to say that you should do more mini jam sessions like that towards the end of shows, particularly ones like this.
Cheers!!
I love the audio editing at the start. Great video guys.
That was awesome. Very inspiring hearing how and what Dan created from the ball bag. Wow 🎉
1:19:32 - The sweetest sounds of 90 minutes of molto dolce noises. Home you may be, Mr Taylor, inspiring you remain nonetheless.
Much obliged, thank you!
Awesome video, thanks. Two things:
Mick, the 'gods; were on you side!
Dan's Aussie humour never fails!
Dan! That UA Galaxy tone and playing was sublime! What a great amp/guitar combo as well! Gotta hear more of that Gretsch! :)
Yes! So happy the ac30 is back out!
I've played a big hollowbody Gretsch in punk bands since the 80s. That feedback is real powerful when you really control it to pitch.
Man, the tone Mick is getting. Swoon.
