You have found the right place to visit my friend. Porcupine Tree is one of the least heard bands, but yet one of the best in the world imo. PT is my most favourite band. Of course I love Pink Floyd too.
Totally agree, never heard anything live that sounds so perfectly mixed, no instrument is too overpowering whatsoever, however, can distinguish and feel every instrument together
LOL. It´s Steven Wilson himself "The film is directed and edited by Lasse Hoile and the audio track is mixed in stereo and 5.1 Surround by Steven Wilson" All raises to Steven, as always
Yeah... I went to a PT concert after the Incident tour in Budapest. As great as that was, I look back to it with a kind of bittersweet feeling. No concert I have been to before or since got even close to sounding that good. I could hear John Wesley's backing vocals clearer than the lead vocals on most of the other concerts I've been to. I just couldn't believe it. I though there's some pre-recorded trickery involved until they had an on-stage trainwreck on Lazarus when Steven missed the first verse, stopped the band and they started again. After the concert I wanted to hug the sound guy...
Here from a millionth or so listen to Opeth live in some context. Always understood that Steven was responsible for a lot of the direction of some of their best, but never really "got" PT... until now

Gavin takes the prize for me for his blend of finesse, precision, technicality and above all the soul-grabbing musicality of his artistry.

I think this is one of the finest DVD/Bluray concert releases ever filmed. It's rare to see live footage filmed in a way that not only does the show justice, but in many respects actually adds to the experience. I think this film deserves to be 'up there' with Talking Head's 'Stop Making Sense' and Pink Floyd's 'Live at Pompeii'.
Not only is this my favourite PT song but this is one of my all time favourite songs period. I have heard plenty of awesome epics ranging from Close to the Edge, Cygnus X1, Supper's Ready to Octavarium, The Count of Tuscany and Hessian Peel..and they are just a few examples as there are more awesome epics i haven't mentioned but Anesthetize tops them all IMO. The musicianship is just brilliant and every member gets to shine in this song. The haunting and beautiful vocals of Steven Wilson, the eargasm drumming of Gavin Harrison, the atmosphere of Richard Barbieri, the groove of Colin Edwin and the awesome backings vocals of John Wesley..oh let's not forget the killer guitar riffs. Everything great about prog rock/prog metal can be summarized best in this one song. The amount of transitions this song goes through is just outstanding. One minute you're hearing a Genesis-like opening with beautiful synths and amazing vocal harmonies and then the next minute you're hearing something straight out of an Opeth song and then to top it all of it ends with a Rush/Yes-like climax. Speaking of Rush, i think it's awesome that they got Alex Lifeson to play the opening solo on the album version. Im a bit bummed out that John Wesley did the opening solo instead of Lifeson in this version but it's still good nonetheless. And the sound design is top notch just sayin. Need i say more..this song is just an absolute masterpiece from start to finish. Sorry if this comment went on for too long. I just really adore this song :)
Yeah, agree to all you said. Another EPIC song for me, that runs you through all the emotions, has haunting passages, amazing technical playing, eargasms, the whole gamut, is In The Presence Of Enemies, both parts together. WHAT.A.MASTERPIECE
Man, Richard is so underrated. So locked in, not that the other boys aren't, but plays his parts and doesnt get in anyone's way. Such a treat to listen to.
As a Japan fan I was so happy when I heard that Richard Barbieri had got a "second wind" in a new band. Just sorry it took me so many many years to get around to actually checking them out
Have been into this band for 7 years. They have never received their just level of praise they truly deserve. All members are monster musicians and contribute to quality listening. As a drummer for some 30 years Gavin Harrison amasses me. Heinrich
This is awesome in the truest sense of the word . I am 66 and thought I was passed being moved by what, for me, is new music. How wrong I was now I just want more. This qives me new life.
Same. Almost 59 and pretty much nothing has blown me away as much as this song, and this band. Even though they broke up years ago they are my new favourite band!
Same here, I’m 63, and a serious music fan. Just started listening to PT this year, thanks to You Tube’s algorithm. What a great band now ten years gone. Luckily we still have Dream Theater, another band I’d not heard before last year.😎
Welcome to the club gentlemen. Porcupine Tree is the Pink Floyd of the last 25 years Imo. The best progressive rock band of the last at least 30 years. I'm 60, and was searching for new prog to explore back in the late 90s with the help of this new thing called the internet. Some suggestions were made on some early prog forum to check out PT and I was immediately blown away. The first album I checked out was the double live album Coma Divine and I instantly fell in love. Pristine sound, progressive, edgy, spacey, hard rockin, melodic all at once. Their footprint in the US at that time (98) was still minimal, only a few US concerts by then. I immediately bought Stupid Dream and then their "new album" Lightbulb Sun and I couldn't believe there was a band out there playing this good and sounding both new and retro/familiar at the same time. Then I found out about a progressive rock festival called NEARfest and found out they were booking Porc Tree as one of the headline bands at the 2001 3 day Prog festival and I was there. So I see PT play for the first time there and I was blown away. Been a fan ever since, snapped up everything PT and Wilson has done, and saw PT live on their In Absentia, Deadwing, Fear of a Blank Planet (3x), and Incident tours before Wilson pulled the plug and went "solo". Most of these at small intimate clubs, so up close, and always with great sound. I love what Wilson is doing post PT, but I miss the band dynamic PT had, especially after the great Gavin Harrison joined. I highly recommend you get all the live DVDs/blu rays. Arriving Somewhere Not Here is fantastic, but this show documented on the Anesthetize blu ray is their best, as you can see from this great tune. The 2001 NEARfest show is on YTube here complete btw, which I recently discovered and is well worth checking out.
I listen to all kinds of music, but where it comes to listening to a band and knowing that every member of a band and every instrument having their own very specific role that they are so aware of, and couldn't be replaced by any other - I always come back to listening to this. I don't really get that feeling when listening to other prog/metal bands except a handful. It's quite obvious that for Steven Wilson that the background is a foundation that the rest is placed on, and that the background in the music is always integral to the progression of the songs, and the rest of the band kind of adds details to the background, whereas with other bands they often seem to add things to "sound more like" their "signature" sound, and add them either much more vaguely - such as to not make a mess, or very harshly, so it gives a "statement-y" sound, so they can get away with it. What's also enjoyable about PT is that you can tell they are having so much fun on stage. Not the "I'm so good at this" kind of fun, (I might be looking at you DT) not the "I'm playing this really hard part now" (I'm really looking at you this time), but more of the "This sounds great" kind of fun that you get when you happen to come across something amazing with your band and just jam the hell out of it. I guess it's just respectable music.
Gavin Harrison is todays modern greatest rock drummer , and steven Wilson remains one of the most accomplished songwriters of my generation, this is a STR4ONG VIDEO OF ONE OF MY FAVORITE BANDS ......

This, to me (i.e. my taste, not a universal truth so let's not get started on that), is the pinnacle of music. The build-up and flow of the song, the stellar musicianship, the sheer amount of emotion it invokes both musically and lyrically. I saw PT live only once but luckily they played this song and I still get the shivers thinking about it.
Steven Wilson is simply one of the very BEST musician in the whole story of music. each song he did being in PT or for his own sole carreer is a bright diamond. I discovered him some years ago and every time i listen to his music, simply I fell happines, even when I cry for some particular riff... this is what music is meant to be....simply emotion
Just imagine what it must have been like being there, it would have taken me an hour to pick my jaw up from the floor! And a month to get me to shut up about it. Truly amazing work of musical art.
I love this song, one of Steven's finest compositions to date but the main reason I watch/listen to this version is the drumming. Unbelievable performance from Gavin Harrison, words cannot describe! Insane drumming. Technical but with immense feel and musicality that adds to the performance but at the same time doesn't distract. Great drummer to watch. God damn.
I saw them only once in support of Fear of a Blank Planet, at the House of Blues in Dallas. I would really love to see them again. Those two hours were magical. Come on, Steven. Make it happen. Please.
This is a way better mix then the album version. The problem with PT albums is that they are way over produced. I find the live versions 1 million times better sounding. I will def add this to my greatest hits mix. Thanks for posting
I Disagree , the albums sounds pretty great !! because Steven Wilson care a lot his sound ,is the same here just with the alive vibe sounds more amazing because is more close to the reality and because they are a good band !
I am sometimes tempted to say I was born in the wrong decade, that the 70's had all the best prog stuff. But, thinking about the prog metal albums of late 2000's (Fear of a blank planet, 10.000 days, Crack the Skye, Watershed, Obzen, The way of all flesh) to name a few, I should be pretty damn happy!
Don't forget Watershed and Ghost Reveries :). I think we live in a pretty good era, the problem is that many people don't appreciate music anymore. It's both a great time for music exposure, and a terrible time because music isn't valued as it used to be. It's extremely taken for granted.
Dude I was there it was awesome and the best of it is that I get to see the modern stuff now. but when I'm dead and gone more music will follow and I will miss the future that makes me sad....
I can't believe I just happened to stumble across these guys now, randomly, whilst slighty drunk and high......this has made my night!! 😎✌ I'm a massively Pink Floyd and Tool fan too, so this is a real treat!!
That AWESOME moment you realise, you've just found a UNBELIEVABLE new band to add to your list... That drummer though.. WOW, thanks Scott bass lessons lol
This is an amazing band so the music performance will also be top notch but I feel like the sound and light technicians deserve credit for this beautiful rendition. Kudos to whoever was managing the sound and lights.
I could watch Gavin Harrison play all day..the guy knows his shit..but thats unfair to the rest of the band. They all play their part to make this such a sonic experience.
Gavin's drumming on this is extraordinary, what a drummer, those little rolls and fills amazing guy, best out there. He never ceases to amaze me, i hear things every time.
Absolute epic masterpiece. Phenomenal experience from another world every time I listen to this. Has to be one of the greatest compositions of all time.
in an interview that's on youtube can't remember the exact video thought the guy doing the inteview asks if they'll get back together to which he responds that almost every band has split and come back and that PT will probably be no exception =)
Pretty sure Wilson doesn't want people associating a specific album to the band. Each PT album is more of a project than a band album per se, PT in itself is more of concept band like Ayreon than a standard one. An evolving entity it you want. Listen to their whole catalog in becomes self-explanatory
Must have watched this a thousand times or more and still keep coming back. They were just so on their game that night and Gavin showed just exactly what a drum kit is capable of with a mix of subtle nuance and driving rhythm totally superb.
I was told about this band a couple of years ago. Listened to a song and was like...eh it’s ok. Then in the garage restoring a dirt bike this summer I just put this on as “ you might also like this” recommendation on iTunes. Well, as I listened to this it grabbed me, I listened again and now I am discovering more and more awesome songs by this band. I can’t believe in my 54 years of life that I missed this band somehow. However, I don’t have to wait for new music from them as it’s all out there for me to find now. These guys made some badass music.

P. S. Lifeson is God.
Hessian Peel is my favorite song of all time. This one is up there as well for sure.
Did the same in Japan too
As a Japan fan I was so happy when I heard that Richard Barbieri had got a "second wind" in a new band. Just sorry it took me so many many years to get around to actually checking them out
Porcupine Tree needs to get some beers together and just watch this video once. Reunion guaranteed!
Steve wilson still plays porcupine tree songs at the steven wilson gigs so he probably would not be adverse to it.
Have been into this band for 7 years. They have never received their just level of praise they truly deserve. All members are monster musicians and contribute to quality listening. As a drummer for some 30 years Gavin Harrison amasses me.

I’m 52, always looking for new stuff, very happy to land here, so much great stuff, just a finger tip away, we are so lucky!!
A female, 70.9 years old, a giant Pink Floyd fan and a rocker for sure, I keep coming back to this band! WITH aren't they more famous?
Some serious credit needs to go to John Wesley. A fabulous supporting musician
Hear, Hear. Totally agree.
Look into John's solo stuff. It's quite good!
John is part of the Trees, not supporting musician
@@lou6977 Wikipedia. John Wesley is a touring member 2002-2010
@@Da_Porkchop_Xpress He made with them all the last four albums and all the tours..
That smirk after the unexpected but glorious drum fill at 8:56
+Tashfique Mirza Another one in the solo at 4:40... Gavin steals the show

@@svalidsvad9474 Haha! So true. 99% of the time, Richard has a very serious look on his face, but I guess Gavin's wizardry is just hard to resist.
Precision... Love this band.. and that haunting voice...give shivers in my spine..Awesome Song
+suraj ramanathan spooky scary skeletons
That last 5 minutes is probably the best thing I've ever heard.
Gavin Harrison is todays modern greatest rock drummer , and steven Wilson remains one of the most accomplished songwriters of my generation, this is a STR4ONG VIDEO OF ONE OF MY FAVORITE BANDS ......
One of my favorite live performances ever
I miss this band....
+samuel erneston Steven Wilson is still going strong so..His new album is fantastic
KrishKrusher
I like his solo project. But it's different from PT. I hope someday these guys get together again
+samuel erneston Why they came apart?
it's amazing to see richard barbieri smiling so much...
i never saw him smile once when he was playing in japan or with david sylvian...
he seems to really enjoy watching gavin do his shit...
i have to admit that i enjoy watching gavin do his shit, too...
That's true...but Japan weren't that kind of band... they were completely unique... it's almost like they come from a different dimension.

dave oh This shit made me laugh. I mean, how could you not!?!?!
In my opinion: the best piece of art of all times. Lyric and musicaly
Just imagine what it must have been like being there, it would have taken me an hour to pick my jaw up from the floor! And a month to get me to shut up about it. Truly amazing work of musical art.
I'm still looking for my jaw...it's been gone for years now! The absolutely best live band I have ever seen...every time!!!
I watch/listen to this on a daily basis.
Same

The last scratchy effect on guitar solo tears my heart everytime. Its like someone trying to rip my heart with two hands.
This track especially the live version gives me goosebumps every single time.
God damn.
+Dan Aston I so agree!!!
+Dan Aston
No expert but every hit sounds "clean" for want of a better word, so precise yet with feeling utterly amazing.
I miss this band so much. The fact that I won't be able to see them live saddens me
Amen brother
I feel for you mate
I saw them only once in support of Fear of a Blank Planet, at the House of Blues in Dallas. I would really love to see them again. Those two hours were magical.
Come on, Steven. Make it happen. Please.
They just HAVE to reunite for at least one more album. They'll realise how much they miss playing with each other
So, this happens :)
Porcupine tree was one of the best. Period. Steven Wilson is a fucking genius.
The precision on every beat and strum on the guitars and pluck of the bass. It's just... Perfect.
I just finished listening to all the music ever made by any human anywhere in all 11 dimensions, and this is the best band. I have spoken.
This is a way better mix then the album version. The problem with PT albums is that they are way over produced. I find the live versions 1 million times better sounding. I will def add this to my greatest hits mix. Thanks for posting
Thanks and strongly agree with your point...In live versions we can see true artists ....
I found the same thing with Frank Zappa. Though I would not want life without his studio output being out there.. thank you Spotify
I disagree. I think alot of songs sound meatier on the album.
I Disagree , the albums sounds pretty great !! because Steven Wilson care a lot his sound ,is the same here just with the alive vibe sounds more amazing because is more close to the reality and because they are a good band !
they confirm only what they r capable of , sorry to disagree with you , but you see just how these guys r genius in music production ;)
Lost count of how many times i have listened to this magnificent piece. !!!!
Sound Awake, Karnivool ;)
Dude I was there it was awesome and the best of it is that I get to see the modern stuff now. but when I'm dead and gone more music will follow and I will miss the future that makes me sad....
Rohann van Rensburg he said watershed.
Esben Topland WATERSHED 👌🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
I can't believe I just happened to stumble across these guys now, randomly, whilst slighty drunk and high......this has made my night!! 😎✌
I'm a massively Pink Floyd and Tool fan too, so this is a real treat!!
17 mins of purcupine tree and a bottle of whisky thats all what i need to get a sound sleep thank you for this master piece
Gavin Harrison's drumming is pure perfection.
I like how the end end of the song brings you back down from the speed trip you were just on. LOL Remembering the old days...
I keep coming back again and again.
A normal black t-shirt, a simple pant and no shoes. Nothing to show here except...the immense & genuine talent and musicianship!!!
This isn't just music. It's experience. It's what gives purpose to existence.
I'll never get sick of this song, I keep coming back for more.
I don't think I've ever seen another Bass Player who is as laid back as Colin Edwin.
Tremendo montaje, mágica composición!
Fascinan PorcupineTree
Es una banda tremenda en escenario....
+JAGO Thanks for recommending this great music to me Jago
viva porcupine tree
Cásate conmigo, por favor.
That AWESOME moment you realise, you've just found a UNBELIEVABLE new band to add to your list... That drummer though.. WOW, thanks Scott bass lessons lol
The little smiles from the keyboardist and bassist fill my heart with joy.
Gavin Harrison is just godly good.
If there's something out there better than this... I never heard. Masterpiece!
Me neither. Once In a lifetime you get greatness to this level and we just happened to know what true talent is in our time.
Gavin's drumming on this is extraordinary, what a drummer, those little rolls and fills amazing guy, best out there. He never ceases to amaze me, i hear things every time.
16:28 - one of the most beautiful things in this life
No, YOU are one of the most beautiful things in this life!
Absolutely true! Think the same every single time than hear this moment.
Gavin Harrison stole a show. What a phenomenal drummer!
Absolute epic masterpiece. Phenomenal experience from another world every time I listen to this. Has to be one of the greatest compositions of all time.
I've watched this a thousand times. Every second of it is pure gold.
5:00
Minute 16:04. I have an eargasm. Hypnotized 💙
Reminds me of Pink Floyd
lets make a petition so they get back together :p
pretty sure steven wilson said it was probably going to happen at some point
REALLY ???:D where did you hear that pls ?
in an interview that's on youtube can't remember the exact video thought the guy doing the inteview asks if they'll get back together to which he responds that almost every band has split and come back and that PT will probably be no exception =)
nice thx mate ! :)
Pretty sure Wilson doesn't want people associating a specific album to the band. Each PT album is more of a project than a band album per se, PT in itself is more of concept band like Ayreon than a standard one. An evolving entity it you want. Listen to their whole catalog in becomes self-explanatory
Holy shit. What a journey. How am I only just now discovering these guys? Amazing.
I love the fact they don't care who likes them! They do what they love!!!
This is the most complete song ever. Even 10 grammies can't do justice to this song !
Gavin has got to be one of the most MUSICAL drummers I have seen in a while. He does not just play drums...he makes those bad boys sing. Accurate....finessed....articulate....fluid.....just damn 'music' to the ears.
Totally agree Fluid, rhythmic, dynamic, nuanced, ghost notes, incredible fills, best drumming I have ever heard giving full range to what drums can do given the right artist sitting behind them.
REALLY BLOWING...MY MIND....AS MOST OF TIMES.....!!!!!!!!!!!!!Thank you Steven.....once more.!
Dude, that drummer is insane!
