I paid a ridiculous amount of money for a VIP ticket to see Steven Wilson live for his Raven That Refused to Sing tour and it was worth every damn cent. I got to meet him and get a photo. I also saw Porcupine Tree for their Fear of a Blank Planet tour and they played the entire album from start to finish, including this masterpiece. One of the best concerts of my life.
@@ashishkulkarni9783 I don't care too much for the song on its own, but as a drummer, it's super fun to just go nuts while playing along and channel your inner Gavin Harrison haha.
The drummer is also in a band called Pineapple Thief. The singer of this band is the producer of Opeth. You really should listen to this album in its entirety. Thanks Bill for the request
He is great but not the producer of Opeth, he has produced a few albums for Opeth though. He and Mikael also have done a joint project album Gavin H is an amazing drummer
Gavin Harrison is generally considered one of the best progressive rock drummers to ever have lived. The fact that he only reluctantly accepts that he's a rock drummer at all just adds to the magic. He did an album of big band arrangements of Porcupine Tree songs that is worth checking out just for the experience.
Tool was just the comp I was thinking of. Both harder updates of 70’s prog. Longer, musically sophisticated pieces featuring contrasting movements connected by seamless transitions. Insanely high quality musicianship in both bands.
In Absentia, Deadwing and Fear of a blank planet are all fantastic albums. The new one is great too… Fun fact - Alex Lifeson from Rush plays the first solo on the studio version of this song…
Porcupine Tree isn't nearly as popular as they ought to be. If you like this, I definitely suggest trying Sleep Together. They're the kind of band that uses a lot of different styles, some others I'd suggest would be Trains, Blackest Eyes, Open Car, Sound of Muzak, they're all quite different from Anesthetize but just as good (imo).
Its weird. I don't particularly like Sleep Together. Its a grower but it wasn't as immediately powerful as Even Less. Or even the Sky Moves Sideways. The way that Wilson's voice appeared like he was just next to your face in The Sky Moves Sideways really got me as a 17 year old. I had never heard something like that. And the chord sequence in the verse of Even Less is hauntingly pretty.
The complete package: music visionary composer, director, artist, editor, and producer! Wilson said he doesn't want to be the most skilled virtuoso in the band; instead, he carefully selects the incredible talents he needs to bring his compositions to fruition ... he shares his musical vision, points them in the right direction, and then turns them loose! Brilliant, they're all top-drawer musicians. Kudos on this selection!
Porcupine Tree is an awesome rabbit hole to go down! I first heard this exact song (first time hearing PT) and was hooked from there! They are in my playlist and listen daily. I'm a drummer and Gavin is an amazing, incredibly amazing drummer. Gavin and Danny from TOOL were head to head in a recent Modern Drummer poll, Danny won by a little bit, it was close for a while there. Pineapple Thief is another great band with him sitting behind the drums. He also plays with King Crimson in a trio of drummers on tour.
@@DaniRobot sailing the seas of cheese is their best album. Tommy the cat and Jerry was a race car driver are some of my favorite primus songs. Pork soda is also a fantastic album.
gavin harrison is an animal(drummer)what a band, check out let's sleep together and steve wilson's solo stuff "the raven that refused to sing" and "drive home" guthrie's solo at the end of that is a jawdropper
Yes, some of us know every note of this song. And many others. If you listen to it regularly, you won't want to cut any part of it out. It'll all make sense.
A guilty pleasure of mine is watching people listen to my favorite bands, when they’ve never heard of them and I know it’s about to completely blow their face off.
This band, this song in particular, defines what one as a fan of progressive rock or metal understands, loves and perpetuates: it is expressing an idea, a story and everything in the song does it organically at the same time. It doesn't matter if it lasts 30 minutes, there is enough coherence and musical complexity. Nothing is left over, nothing is missing, everything fits.
Yea the drummer is Gavin Harrison and is an absolute beast. As others said he is in a band called Pineapple Thief, and is phenominal on the songs Threatening War and White Mist (i mean all the songs, but those two specifically)
I don't know how many times I've watched this video, but each time, it's like I am drawn into another space. This is excellence on every level, performance, songwriting, musicianship, concept. Just an amazing, stunning experience. Gavin Harrison is an incredible drummer. I love seeing people hear it for the first time, because I will never forget hearing it the first time myself, it just blew my mind.
This song is from the album Fear of a Blank Planet, which is a concept album about the effects of the internet age on kids, all against the backdrop of the concurrent overmedication and overdiagnosis of mental illnesses in children. I don't think Stephen would ever claim that there aren't truly sick kids who need medicating, I think he's just saying that it became a crutch for psychiatrists to fall back on, not to mention a lucrative one, that had very real and negative effects on some kids.
To see the drummer see some really crazy stuff with Porcupine Tree: same concert Cheating the Polygraph. You won't be disappointed! Great song as well. Probably one of my favorites by them. Much overlooked. Thanks for this reaction!
Their music from the early 2000s is where it’s at. Anything from Deadwing and In Absentia is peak porcupine tree. Before that it is more psychedelic and after is more progressive. Those two albums have the perfect amount of each.
I had the honour watching them live in Amsterdam last year. 3 hours. I still cannot comprehend what happened. What I witnessed. These guys are from another planet and they take you to their planet. Their tracks are amazing. Lyrics as well. Protest band. No happy songs.
I subscribed for Harry Mack reactions but I never expected Porcupine Tree! One of the most underrated bands of all time. If you do them again try a song called “Trains”, it’s easy to digest and such a banger
As a fan for many many years, I actually got to see them as PT for the very first time at the Ziggo Dome in The Netherlands last year! Never ever have I ever heard something so tight and incredibly good live, what an experience!
Love your reaction! Steven Wilson has crafted some of the most beautiful rock music I've ever heard over the past twenty years that I've been listening to his music.
Good day all. I've seen this video a few time and I love Porcupine Tree, but your comment about them all working for OfficeMax just killed me!! Well done!

Seeing this song live is an experience all in its own. I saw Porcupine Tree play in Washington DC and it is the best concert I've been to in my life. Every single song they played was on point. They're the band that probably inspired me the most to start making music of my own and start playing guitar.
Steven Wilson is a musical genius, and all these guys are virtuosos on their instruments. In my opinion Gavin Harrison is the best drummer playing today (Neil Peart of Rush was a big fan of Gavin's). My favorite Porcupine Tree album is "Dead Wing," it's a masterpiece, you should react to the live version of the song "Arriving Somewhere But Not Here."

The multiple sections is what I love about progressive music like this song, or Opeth. It really feels like storytelling.
