I watched native people do this in Maine when I was a young man. They hollowed out the canoe with fire and scraped the char out with sticks. Once it reached the desired thickness in the walls they sank the canoe and water logged it, made a fire and placed stick into the canoe to push the walls out wide and placed it over the fire to dry into shape. It was incredible work. I think it was the Abenaki if I remember correctly?

@@mojoden Well...I really was referring to the type of boat/canoe construction, you know the carving out of a tree log? Hence the term "dug out" Dugouts are the oldest boats archaeologists have found, dating back more than 8,000 years to the Neolithic Stone Age. Kinda old school, and if you're talking about chain saws, well they've been around since 1918. Is that not "old school enough?" 😉
These builds are amazing!! Amazing to watch!! Buuuuut…With “survival” tools “learnt” in the military…as he pulls out the survival tool known as a chain saw”…Cool canoe though, good job!
Great outcome for your massive project. Noticed the use of calipers (self-made, good job) and remembered about dugout canoe builders of the USA Northwest using the process of completing the exterior of the hull first. Then drilling holes from the exterior inward and driving wooden rods with painted tips into the holes to the intended hull thickness. These painted tips would be exposed when the proper thickness was excavated from the interior. The hull would then be expanded by filling it with water, which was brought to a sustained boil with hot rocks so the wood became flexible enough to expand using wedges.
There's a vid featuring a much longer and larger dugout that the builders took down the Missouri river. They used the technique you described. Also, just a canoe not an outrigger, and they said it handled beautifully
