Don’t forget WiFi 6 printed on any router or adapter does not mean it covers all the standards. To find out you need to look at the chipsets and their spec then hope they add these features to the firmware. An example is the NG RAX120 that does not support OFDMA in both directions as well as TwT or full BSS Coloring. There are plenty of other routers that follow this example so to see full WiFi 6 benefits you need to check very hard what the equipment offers regarding to the standard.
this is a quest 2 WIFI bandwidth limitation. maximum at 1200 mbps. the new quest 3 uses much better WIFI bandwidth compared to quest 2. so your 2400mbps ax Wi-Fi card shows its power when quest 3 released 😁
I see that you are using 100 megabit for the streaming quality, I would ask if you would want to see the true difference in between these test, to ramp up the amount of data it would need to transfer without impacting your graphical performance too much goto 300 megabit and see what the latency does between both of them. I watched the whole thing while being kinda distracted but I heard that using a wifi card as a dongle leads to bad lag and that it was better to go with a wifi 6 router. but I cannot tell if you are using a wifi 5 router with a wifi 6 pci-e antenna, using the wifi 6 card as a dongle, or using a wifi 6 card with a wifi 6 router. My Wifi is not a regular one (it's actually rated for medium offices) I have 2 Unifi APs and one is in the playing room... Is it possible to have an wifi 5 connection to your PC and then connect a wifi 6 router directly into Ethernet PC Port, and then run the internet wirelessly on the PC, but connect wirelessly with the wifi 6 router to the Quest 2?
this is like I thought it would be, quite comparable to each other. I am only considering upgrading my over a decade old router now because of congestion. otherwise I stick to just the headset in day, and pcvr on a night when most are sleeping.
This is outdated, and uses a setup for Wifi 6 that both Oculus and the dev of Virtual Desktop specifically recommend against using. Internal PCIe Wifi 6 does not perform as well as a dedicated wifi 6 router for any form of wireless VR. Their signal tends to not be all that strong, and apparently Windows itself limits performance to some degree for some reason on top of that. They both specifically say to have the router wired directly into the PC via Ethernet if at all possible, and only use the wifi to connect to the Quest 2 itself. I have tried an AX200 wifi PCIe card, a TP Link 1800 Wifi 6 router with both 802.11 ac and ax exclusive modes on that router, and have an Asus AX 5700 router. I actually bought the PCIe card for Bluetooth, but it is a wifi 6 card so of course I tried it out for wireless VR. The results were not good. The PCIe card was the least stable and worst performing of the bunch. Lots of lag and latency with 50-60+ ms combined latency, which is not good. The AC band was the second worst, but more stable than the PCIe card, but stayed below 60ms for the most part, but never under 50ms, which isn't great but does work mostly fine for most games. The TP Link performed fine in AX mode, generally in the 40-ish range but also topped out in the 50+ range for some games. This is at high settings and at 80ghz, with a bitrate of 100, with a signal ranging from about 600-1080mbps, and it would occasionally temporarily top out at 1200 for a short bit. That's perfectly acceptable for 95% of PCVR titles wirelessly. Exceptions would be something like Beat Saber, where the latency will occasionally cause you to fail due to lag spikes, but even then it's mostly playable. The Asus router destroyed everything else. Consistently lower than 40 latency at Ultra settings, 120ghz, a bitrate of 130, with a rock solid 1200 mbps. It's also the most expensive solution. It's also worth pointing out that setting up your router matters. You need to go in and turn off a lot of auto connect features, set how wide a band you are using, specify a channel that has the least amount of traffic on and around it, and do some other tweaking to get the best performance. This is not a "plug and play" and leave everything on default/auto situation. Sure, plug and play will probably work "mostly fine" but you are not going to get the best possible experience without setting up your hardware properly.
@@ComptonArse No specific source, just lots of posts and videos over time about how to do things, plus my own tweaking and testing with my router. Basically my biggest single source for information was Google. Every router is different, but for the most part it's pretty self explanatory in the menu system. You should be able to read the descriptions of what stuff does and figure out what the best settings will be. You want ax mode exclusively for wireless VR, set the bandwidth as wide as you can, use some kind of wifi mapping app to find the channel that is closest to clear [your router may have this in the settings, or you can use a phone app for it], don't turn the signal power up unless you need to because you're just contributing to signal noise with no benefit if you don't need it, do turn it up if you're struggling for a good signal as high as you need to, but no more, and disable any smart connect features as they may override your other settings in favor of the signal the router "thinks" is best, which may not be optimal. Basically, your signal pollution situation and router settings will depend on your situation. You really can't break anything by tweaking your settings, so if you're curious about whether something might help or not, try it out and see if it helps.

@@kyleeaton2717 None of the above. You need a router and it should be connected directly to the PC via ethernet cable. At this point, my previous comment is outdated. I doubt a phone will even work, but if it did latency would be a huge problem. While it does provide an internet connection to the Quest 2, the point is to connect through your wireless network to your PC for PCVR, having internet access is not necessary. You do need internet to use the Quest 2, but it is unnecessary for purposes of streaming PCVR to the device once it is initially set up. A PCIe card won't work very well because Windows networking software drivers are apparently garbage. It costs about as much as a decent router would anyway. You can connect to a PCIe wifi card with a Quest, but you'll have connection issues and latency problems. If you want a cheap reliable option, a lot of people swear by the TP Link AC1200. This is not a wifi 6 router, but it will do the job as the Virtual Desktop Discord recommends this router. Wifi 6 doesn't actually provide any additional bandwidth to VR streaming for wireless play and really just helps with network congestion and generally has more ways to get around signal pollution if there are a lot of other wifi signals nearby. The bandwidth of AC is wide enough that the Quest 2 can't use it all because of the limitations of the processor. An 802.11 AC router should be fine if you get a decent one and set it up properly, so long as the signal pollution situation where you live is reasonable anyway. I'm afraid that's about as cheap as you're going to get away with for wireless PCVR for the Quest 2.

If i'm following you are testing - going from the quest2 to the router (as an access point) which then goes directly to your pc - TO - going from quest 2 to the PCIe card (also as an access point) which then goes directly to your pc. If that's right, have you tried going from the quest 2, to your main router, then to your pc. Does that add any more latency then the two options you are running?
6e wifi card worked best for me,from 720mbps to 1200mbps speed,since my modem quite old,sometimes pcvr can run well sometimes its terribly bad,wifi 6e is pretty cheap like $30

lol I still use an apple time capsule router, and I have no problems with the pc vr. used it since getting it new, and just never changed it because i'm lazy and think, if its not broke....
Honestly for someone who doesn't wanna pay over 100-200 bucks for a dedicated 5ghz Router. TP-Link AC1200 WLAN-Router is a perfect alternative, if you wanna just use the Router as an Access Point and just run it exclusive for Wireless VR..get it.
Nice video. Its pretty clear that all those manipulations with placing router nearby the VR, and alswo switching wifi 5 to wifi 6 are completely inneffective and you wont gain any benefit with VD.
Im a tad confused, do you have to set up the wifi card as a hotspot? I ask because my usb controllers on my mobo are a problem so airlink or VD are my only solutions. I read that windows 10/11 speeds are capped with hotspots so i thought it may be better getting a router. But now im not sure what to do. I have a quest 3 and want the highest speed possible to couple up with my high end pc. Having usb stutters and 20+ hours of trouble shooting have forced me down this path but I think im excited to try wireless pcvr, the mobility will be a game changer but I want to try maintain as much visual quality as possible.
Just saying "WiFi 5" and "WiFi 6" doesn't mean anything because both standards have various speed-tiers. Also the option to stream via an Internal WiFi card isn't limited to WiFi 6.

Hi! Medium is the graphics setting in Virtual Desktop, which is recommended for my 2070 super. High is for 3070 and up I think. With Virtual Desktop (an app in the ques 2 store) you can play pc vr games wirelessly. But not tomb raider, since its not a VR game (as far as I know).

Your wifi 6 card should theoretically manage 3000 Mbit/s, which would translate to 375MB/s, have you tried increasing bitrate and maybe virtual desktop graphics quality? Are you getting any stutters or freezing in any games at higher bitrate?
Quest 2 maxes out at 1200 Mbit/s, so it doesn't take full advantage of wifi6. As for higher bitrate in Virtual Desktop, I've played at 120 with pretty much the same latency, but I can honestly not tell much difference so I stick with 100 for entirely non-scientific reasons. As for going higher, sure, you can tinker and find your own sweetspot, but the latency will start climbing.
Wonder, with a decent guage extension, would usb c to usb 3.1 adapter work for a long distance. I'm talking like 30 feet I currently use a odyssey pro. Short cable. Does not like hdmi extenders at all, but usb extensions work good. The internal cameras are starting to go bad. So Im thinking about a quest 2
I was having this same issue, for whatever reason changing the audio device in windows fixed it. I don't remember what specifically I did but it made a significant difference. I think I switched from the oculus audio to realtech audio and it stopped all the stutter and lag
Ive just gotten a wifi 5 dongle, stuck it in my pc, created a personal hotspot and yet, when playing games through oculus software, texture can look blurry, any editing of oculus debug tool breaks the software link

@@sniperysbro13 Bought a dedicated Wifi 5 router hardwhired into network and placed in same room as occulus. That and make sure use right software, remote desktop, steam or occulus, depending on the game.

For me, I have a Wifi 5 and Wifi 6 router. I also have a Quest 2 and 3. Both of them have really horrible latency spikes with the wifi 6 router and when I switch to the wifi 5... the spikes are gone. I honestly cannot understand what is happening.
The problem with pcie cards is that they require extra processing power from the PC to transfer data from the pcie to the ethernet using memory bandwidth and cpu timing to do so. This causes a number of issues, especially on cheap pcie ones. The best cheap option is a dedicated Tp Link router C6 (gigabit ethernet version) which cost 40$, then you turn off mimo support and 2.4 ghz support. Then you basically use it only for VD and nothing else. Using it without internet will also reduce spiking and jitter. I've been experimenting for the past year with this seriously 😂 Also it's important to mention that the creator of VD does not recommend pcie cards because the software is not optimised for this. For example, while the 18.2 version of VD worked great with my pcie card, every version after that made the performance worse and worse. So that's also something to keep in mind. Interesting post! At the moment, I use a dedicated router next to my play area so I didn't know about stability issues with newer VD versions. I "had a chat" with the creator on reddit, and he said the reason he didn't recomment wifi pcie is because you have to connect your pc to your phone first to unlock full speed.
I would say it all works. Pick whichever you like best. But Oculus Link... Well, I used to praise it a lot. But now I can't play with a cable anymore. I just can't. Wireless is so amazing even if the latency and visuals are slightly worse than with link.
Yeah, the incentive is only there if your router isn't great, or there's a lot of people connected to it, or if it's far away from where you play. Let's hope a future quest model takes full advantage of wifi6, or even 6e.
Important: CAT 6 ethernet cables have a top speed of 1.000 MBit while Wi-Fi 6 has a top speed of 9.600 MBit. So, if you're connecting a slow CAT 6 cable to a fast Wi-Fi antenna, you're essentially bottlenecking the speed, even if only by just a bit, since the Quest 2 can reach a maximum of 1.200 MBit. So, your CAT 6 cable is 200 MBit slower than what the Quest 2 can handle. To future-proof your connections, I advise you to switch to CAT 8 which has a top speed of 40.000 MBit. Every router will transmit the full bitrate up and down from then on, no more bottlenecking. To be a 100% idiot proof comparison, you'd have to specify what cable you used to connect the router to your PC and the PCIe antenna to the motherboard or whatever. Even the motherboard inside your computer can slow down the bitrate. Imagine sticking a 40 GBit cable into a 1 GBit port for example. The signal that comes from the PCIe antenna also has to travel through the chip and other components until it reaches the same place the ethernet cable would send its signals to. The manufacturers of each component should have their write/read/transmit speeds available somewhere. I understand that it's not really important to the majority though and most people just measure the speed from any port to the wireless device Alright I am very picky when it comes to this, but you need to check what type of cable you are using rather than the length. Even if your CAT 6 cable is 1 cm long, you'd bottleneck the signal that came from the 9.6 GBit down to 1 GBit, making the router completely useless compared to older Wi-Fi generations ... dammit, you are actually using a Wi-Fi 5 router I'm blind

That's 100% wrong. First, Cat 6 supports 10Gbps up to 100 meters, not 1Gbps. Second, "Even if your CAT 6 cable is 1 cm long" IS EVEN MORE WRONG. The only difference between cat cables is how much speed they can sustain at HIGH DISTANCES. At 1CM, even an old cat5 cable with 8 pins will handle 10Gbps just fine, and probably even more. Third, the 1Gbps limit actually comes from the router/network card on the PC, as most consumer ethernet ports are 1Gbps, because 10Gbps costs way more money and most people don't need it. Fourth, even if 1.2Gbps is the theoretical limit of the AX1800 standard, there is no way you are gonna get near those speeds in real world. You're lucky if you get to 800-900Mbits
seems like you should definitely consider higher speed cable, because cat 6 (if I remember correctly) is capped at 100mbps. all the newer motherboards support 1G ethernet link, so it wouldn't bottleneck the setup.

Got myself a 6E access point. Playing at 120 fps with 150+ mbit and it almost always looks like native.
Does that mean that I do not need a router at all but can directly connect with Onboard WiFi 6 to the Quest 2?

Quest Pro has Wifi6-E as a requirement on their site. Any ideea why the E version would be better than Wifi6?
6 is still on 5ghz frequency band, while 6E is on a 6ghz band. Less people use the 6ghz channel so it’ll be better with latency.

1200 is link speed I'm assuming. Can you test speed with iPerf 3 please, by any chance? Also what's the bitrate with auto bitrate turned on?

Nice video. Its pretty clear that all those manipulations with placing router nearby the VR, and alswo switching wifi 5 to wifi 6 are completely inneffective and you wont gain any benefit with VD.
Im a tad confused, do you have to set up the wifi card as a hotspot? I ask because my usb controllers on my mobo are a problem so airlink or VD are my only solutions. I read that windows 10/11 speeds are capped with hotspots so i thought it may be better getting a router. But now im not sure what to do. I have a quest 3 and want the highest speed possible to couple up with my high end pc. Having usb stutters and 20+ hours of trouble shooting have forced me down this path but I think im excited to try wireless pcvr, the mobility will be a game changer but I want to try maintain as much visual quality as possible.
It'd be interesting to know if this was the same for the Quest 3

Just saying "WiFi 5" and "WiFi 6" doesn't mean anything because both standards have various speed-tiers. Also the option to stream via an Internal WiFi card isn't limited to WiFi 6.

Hi. This video made question marks in my head. Why the graphics quality is medium? Because of your graphic card or wifi? What happens if you set graphics quality to high or ultra in games. Also can we play pc games on oculus quest 2 with wifi? For example tomb raider games. can we play them? İf the answer is yes can we play them in high quality mode?
Hi! Medium is the graphics setting in Virtual Desktop, which is recommended for my 2070 super. High is for 3070 and up I think. With Virtual Desktop (an app in the ques 2 store) you can play pc vr games wirelessly. But not tomb raider, since its not a VR game (as far as I know).

Wow, this is a really late reply. sorry! But no, I doubt it will make any difference. The quest is capped long before the cable.
Your wifi 6 card should theoretically manage 3000 Mbit/s, which would translate to 375MB/s, have you tried increasing bitrate and maybe virtual desktop graphics quality? Are you getting any stutters or freezing in any games at higher bitrate?
Quest 2 maxes out at 1200 Mbit/s, so it doesn't take full advantage of wifi6. As for higher bitrate in Virtual Desktop, I've played at 120 with pretty much the same latency, but I can honestly not tell much difference so I stick with 100 for entirely non-scientific reasons. As for going higher, sure, you can tinker and find your own sweetspot, but the latency will start climbing.
I’ve given up on wireless pcvr. Both VD and Airlink are so laggy that it’s so bad. Oculus link has crisp visuals and zero latency.
Wonder, with a decent guage extension, would usb c to usb 3.1 adapter work for a long distance. I'm talking like 30 feet
I currently use a odyssey pro. Short cable. Does not like hdmi extenders at all, but usb extensions work good. The internal cameras are starting to go bad. So Im thinking about a quest 2
I was having this same issue, for whatever reason changing the audio device in windows fixed it. I don't remember what specifically I did but it made a significant difference. I think I switched from the oculus audio to realtech audio and it stopped all the stutter and lag

Ive just gotten a wifi 5 dongle, stuck it in my pc, created a personal hotspot and yet, when playing games through oculus software, texture can look blurry, any editing of oculus debug tool breaks the software link
I'm not so sure a dongle will cut it. Try a pci wifi 6 card, or wait for that airlink wifi adapter.

@@sniperysbro13 Bought a dedicated Wifi 5 router hardwhired into network and placed in same room as occulus. That and make sure use right software, remote desktop, steam or occulus, depending on the game.

Tick the box for "show performance overlay" in the streaming tab in Virtual Desktop.
For me, I have a Wifi 5 and Wifi 6 router. I also have a Quest 2 and 3. Both of them have really horrible latency spikes with the wifi 6 router and when I switch to the wifi 5... the spikes are gone. I honestly cannot understand what is happening.
The problem with pcie cards is that they require extra processing power from the PC to transfer data from the pcie to the ethernet using memory bandwidth and cpu timing to do so. This causes a number of issues, especially on cheap pcie ones. The best cheap option is a dedicated Tp Link router C6 (gigabit ethernet version) which cost 40$, then you turn off mimo support and 2.4 ghz support. Then you basically use it only for VD and nothing else. Using it without internet will also reduce spiking and jitter.
I've been experimenting for the past year with this seriously 😂 Also it's important to mention that the creator of VD does not recommend pcie cards because the software is not optimised for this. For example, while the 18.2 version of VD worked great with my pcie card, every version after that made the performance worse and worse. So that's also something to keep in mind. Interesting post! At the moment, I use a dedicated router next to my play area so I didn't know about stability issues with newer VD versions. I "had a chat" with the creator on reddit, and he said the reason he didn't recomment wifi pcie is because you have to connect your pc to your phone first to unlock full speed.
Transfer which data from pcie to Ethernet? If using pcie card there signal goes directly to oculus, or I get it all wrong?

I would say it all works. Pick whichever you like best. But Oculus Link... Well, I used to praise it a lot. But now I can't play with a cable anymore. I just can't. Wireless is so amazing even if the latency and visuals are slightly worse than with link.

So, there's hardly any incentive to get a Wifi 6 setup. You'd think the Wifi 6 card in Quest 2 would've the advantage over Wifi 5 here.
Yeah, the incentive is only there if your router isn't great, or there's a lot of people connected to it, or if it's far away from where you play. Let's hope a future quest model takes full advantage of wifi6, or even 6e.

Important: CAT 6 ethernet cables have a top speed of 1.000 MBit while Wi-Fi 6 has a top speed of 9.600 MBit. So, if you're connecting a slow CAT 6 cable to a fast Wi-Fi antenna, you're essentially bottlenecking the speed, even if only by just a bit, since the Quest 2 can reach a maximum of 1.200 MBit. So, your CAT 6 cable is 200 MBit slower than what the Quest 2 can handle. To future-proof your connections, I advise you to switch to CAT 8 which has a top speed of 40.000 MBit. Every router will transmit the full bitrate up and down from then on, no more bottlenecking.
To be a 100% idiot proof comparison, you'd have to specify what cable you used to connect the router to your PC and the PCIe antenna to the motherboard or whatever. Even the motherboard inside your computer can slow down the bitrate. Imagine sticking a 40 GBit cable into a 1 GBit port for example. The signal that comes from the PCIe antenna also has to travel through the chip and other components until it reaches the same place the ethernet cable would send its signals to. The manufacturers of each component should have their write/read/transmit speeds available somewhere. I understand that it's not really important to the majority though and most people just measure the speed from any port to the wireless device
Alright I am very picky when it comes to this, but you need to check what type of cable you are using rather than the length. Even if your CAT 6 cable is 1 cm long, you'd bottleneck the signal that came from the 9.6 GBit down to 1 GBit, making the router completely useless compared to older Wi-Fi generations

If I use my phone's 5g internet through usb tether to connect my quest2 and PC for virtual desktop. What wifi adapter should I use? Since idk where the bottleneck is in this scenario. Should I bother with a wifi 6 or wifi 6e pcie card? Should I just get one of those usb 3.0 dongles? I don't want to spend extra money if I don't have to for the same results.
That's 100% wrong. First, Cat 6 supports 10Gbps up to 100 meters, not 1Gbps.
Second, "Even if your CAT 6 cable is 1 cm long" IS EVEN MORE WRONG. The only difference between cat cables is how much speed they can sustain at HIGH DISTANCES. At 1CM, even an old cat5 cable with 8 pins will handle 10Gbps just fine, and probably even more.
Third, the 1Gbps limit actually comes from the router/network card on the PC, as most consumer ethernet ports are 1Gbps, because 10Gbps costs way more money and most people don't need it.
Fourth, even if 1.2Gbps is the theoretical limit of the AX1800 standard, there is no way you are gonna get near those speeds in real world. You're lucky if you get to 800-900Mbits
seems like you should definitely consider higher speed cable, because cat 6 (if I remember correctly) is capped at 100mbps. all the newer motherboards support 1G ethernet link, so it wouldn't bottleneck the setup.
