  • Conspiracy theories, from QANON to flatearthers, seem to have taken hold today. And with these conspiracies become more and more influential in our political landscape, Star Trek Voyager may show us a path forward through the character of Seven of Nine. Captain Janeway and Seven show us how to heal from conspiracy theories with empathy and caring.

This got to me. I lost a dear friend to conspiracy theories, he was my housemate in college and we used to watch Voyager together. He was kind of the Ron Swanson to my Leslie Knope, but the conspiracy stuff ruined it and made him turn Islamaphobic and though I'm an atheist, I'm still Middle Eastern and I didn't feel safe. That was a couple of years ago and I don't know how much further down the rabbit hole he went. Sometimes I wonder if I could have reached him, but like I said, I didn't feel safe so I made the self-care choice. I hope others are in a better position to reach him and those who are reachable.

Part of the fallout of the inundation of information and stimulus, is a lack of being able to focus on a single medium for the requisite amount of time needed for reflection, and all that that implies. We ignore nuance for the quickness and simplicity of information quantity. I have seen this in my home with just my kid and myself. This also has the effect of affecting our cognitive abilities.

It's easy to feel terrified by these people who fall down rabbit holes into dangerous conspiracy territory.

It takes so much strength of character to remember that they are people and to show them empathy.

This really put it into great words. I had always noticed how Naomi adapted to Seven’s... Borg-ness? easier than the adults, as kids are wont to do with “weird” people. But you’re right that Seven seems to understand and respect Naomi more easily too. I like little moments like when they talk in the mess hall, or Seven giving her writing advice.

Seven's arc with Naomi and X-B youths was one of her character's best.
Seven's chronological age of early 20s coupled with stunted social development makes it extra ill-conceived for the Doc (unethical!) and even Chakotay to lust after/romance her
Chakotay was a deeply human, spiritual guy deeply invested in his Indigenous heritage who was also canonically one Ensign Kim OLDER than Seven (21 yrs).
      Inappropriate AND incompatible.
Glad the reboots retracted that endgame.

I related a lot to Naomi as a kid because she was usually the only kid on voyager, she didn't have anyone her age to socialize with just like I didn't, she would use holodeck programs to socialize and entertain herself just like I would just play videogames all day since there was nothing else to do, I learned how to superficially seem human by watching TV.
now I relate a lot to seven, she had her childhood stolen while thinking she was being "protected" and she seemingly flips back and forth between lingering admiration for the Borg, and hatred for taking away something she can never truly get back. I often come off cold but naive just like her... I view seven and naomi almost as 2 sides of the same coin I guess

It's a shame that Kate Mulgrew seems to have had some resentment towards Jeri Ryan back in the day, although they seem to at least have a mutual respect these days, but from the various stories from the cast members, Kate made life very difficult for Jeri at the time.

I grew up being told that there's someone watching over us, that there's a plan behind everything, even behind natural catastrophies. I grew to reject that. I embraced chance and human nature as being actually the less scary explanation for bad things happening. And personally I didn't reject one magical scary master mind just to replace it with another. But I see the allure of it: conspiracies are a modern ersatz religion, quite literally.

And like religion, it is based on a foundation of lies, misrepresentations, and a desire to manipulate people using fear, in order to enslave their minds and then their bodies. That's why every religion promises peace and delivers bloodshed instead. I just couldn't figure out what. So instead I just had the next chapter start just after the end of this episode with Seven admitting that downloading all that information at once was a bad idea and Samantha saying that this whole mess could've been avoided if she'd talked to her first before doing it because Sam would've told her it was a bad idea.

This really does hit hard. I've really been struggling with sense of loss, on both a personal and national scale. These are people who are lost. Our people. I feel so powerless. The Borg really is an apt analogy for what we are seeing. It's really an alagory about cults, and technology anxiety, and that is a fitting mirror to what we are dealing with.
It's easy to forget just how new the internet is, and how new social media is. The rapid evolution we are enduring has consequences when we soar so high, we can lose touch with the natural boundaries that would otherwise insulate us from such nasty consequences. In other words, it's like giving a toddler a keyboard that could control-alt-delete human civilization.
I share your belief empathy is the cure. It's the vast, terrible lack of it that got us in this mess to begin with.
I love your content Jesse. Thank you. 👏👏❤💐

This is pretty amazing. At the end of the day, this is basically just a review of a single episode of Voyager, with a purpose. But somehow Jessie's approach, and her leaning into the compassion of Janeway for Seven as the over-riding centre of the issue, nearly brought me to tears.
I mean, it helps that Voyager happen to have made an episode directly about conspiracy theories a couple of decades before they became such a big thing. But this is excellent from Jessie to use that episode to make an appeal about a way forward in deprogramming people from these theories.

Great message and very moving. Best message in here is to remind yourself that these are all people. Not others, not crazies, not brainwashed drones, but people.

Excellent analysis as always, as an student of mathematics hoping to go into data science I know very well that overwhelm that one feels when trying to connect everything, there is this song, from the Macross Plus Soundtrack that I love that is called "Information High", always felt it embodied that feeling of catharsis that brings the knowing... of at the very least thinking you know stuff.

This a good video. I'll admit it comes from a much more hopeful place than I am at, but I appreciate the overall message. Particularly the acknowledgement that you must also care for yourself and are not responsible for talking down everyone and anyone.

Jessie, this is a beautiful video. I teared up many times. I appreciate your thoughtful and nuanced approach to this topic and I wholeheartedly agree that we shouldn't abandon people to conspiracy theories if we still have the capacity to reach out and help. I am just barely starting my journey through your back catalog of videos but I'm so excited to hear more from you.

President Biden, at the inauguration, spoke of reunifying the nation after our "uncivil war." It is empathy toward each other that will do just that. Great video, Jessie.

I've always found this fascinating but foreign, this idea that it's better when suffering happens because someone does it to us - because my position is the exact opposite. If it's just the unfeeling universe, not happy but can endure. If it's someone actively doing this to me - much, much worse!
Another thought I had while watching this video: you could liken conspiracy theories (and also cults, some very similar aspects) to a kind of mind cancer. If we let it, it will slowly but surely take over and incorporate the whole mind, until there's nothing left.

This is the best video I've seen of yours. So very contemporary and on point! Well thought out and expertly expressed. U sound like yr expressing some kind of personal experience of loss 2 people u were once close with (im guessing), but yr empathy and understanding appears intact. Kudos!!!

I loved this episode. I can now understand how something like the "Documentary" "Loose Change" about 9/11 fooled people, and how I felt when I watched it. Thank you Voyager and Jessie for bringing back memories and, even more how Star Trek holds up so well today that I need to watch them all again. (Especially DS9's 2020episode, an episode that always makes me cry)
