Tuvok’s blindness in Year of Hell is so, so carefully done, and subtly I think one of Star Trek’s best representations of disability. Tuvok is silently offered the arm of someone for guidance rather than being dragged (super subtle, but my hub who is low vision recognized it immediately from his Orientation & Mobility training), and Voyager is apparently so accessible(!!!) that Tuvok is able to lose his vision and go back to work without struggling for accommodations, or giving us some excuse like “Tuvok is so great he compensates.” Obsessed with this tiny detail, and have been thinking about it a lot since last week’s SNW.

LIVING WITNESS!!! I'm an archivist and Living Witness was weirdly a sort of course-setter for what I wanted to do in life. The importance of maintaining recorded history and helping to represent the voices of the marginalized for the future was burned into my brain. And now it's what I do as a career.

I'm glad that both "The Thaw" and "Living Witness" are on this list as they're some of the most overlooked episodes out there.

In lockdown, I watched _TNG_ in full for the first time in 30 years, then _DS9_ for the first time ever, then - reluctantly, remembering those bad S1 eps in the '90s - _Voyager._ To my *shock,* _Voyager_ - a mix of _TNG,_ _TOS,_ & _BSG_ - became my favorite _Trek_ series above all. Currently on my third series rewatch.

I think "Living Witness" is the closest thing we'll ever going to get for a Mirror Universe episode for Voyager.

The Equinox would have definitely been in my top ten, it was interesting to see another crew in the same circumstances as Voyager and how badly they handled it. It is also one of the few episodes where we see Janeway almost go dark side, and she might have if Chakotay had not intervened.
An episode I would have put on my top ten that never gets put on anyone's list is Nemesis, it a Chakotay episode where he gets drawn into a war on a planet, and I always thought it had such interesting things to say about war propaganda and manipulation of people's emotions. I also like how at the end Chakotay is not fine really, like he has that great line about wishing it was it was as easy to unlearn hate as it had been to learn it.

I love this list! All of these episodes were great, and it’s awesome to have someone else see Workforce as more than just a boiler plate action movie.
The thing I like about Voyager is that it’s fine with letting you feel uncomfortable with the main characters. When she compares the Doctor to a replicator, it’s one of the most chilling moments in the show. And yet at the end of the episode it doesn’t come back with a long-winded monologue to make you feel better. The character development is much more subtle. The show just presents the events as they were without turning to the camera and telling you what to feel. This is especially apparent in Tuvix and Equinox as well.

  • @lucideandre

I also think it’s weird that The Thaw isn’t so common in Best Of lists.
In fact, while it’s not amongst my top favorite episodes of all Star Trek, that last scene, ending with Fear saying “I’m afraid” and Janeway whispering back “I know”, I’d say, is one of, if not my favorite scene in all Star Trek. It’s soooo well acted and impactful.

I've been watching voyager for the first time and partially for that reason, I've got a lot of different episodes to you in my top ten (I'm only on season 5)
Macrocosm and Faces I love for the scifi horror of it all
Bride of Chaotica! and Message in a Bottle are such fun episodes that allow the cast to show off how funny they can be.
Coda and Resolutions are some of my favourites as someone who loves Janeway and Chakotay.

"Living Witness" as #1 YES! YES! YES! This might be my favorite episode of the entire Trek canon. The ending gets me in the feels every time! THANK YOU!
I’d also add the following to the list:
“Death Wish” (the last brilliant and last great Q episode ever)
“Projections” (a clever story that only Brannon Braga can deliver)
“Pathfinder” (a terrific and consequential story that truly thinks outside the box and a crossover that is worthwhile)
“Eye of the Needle” (another underrated gem that uses the “lost in space” premise well)
    “Prime Factors” (ditto)
    “State of Flux” (also ditto)
“Meld” (the beginning of the Lon Suder arc. He’s so much more interesting than Seven of Nine as Voyager characters go-no offense to Seven fans)
“Basics, parts I and II” (this is only for the compelling conclusion of the Lon Suder arc, not the rest of the episodes)
“Deadlock” (only for the last INCREDIBLE act)
“Before and After” (Another clever story and it features Voyager’s most underrated main character, Kes!)
“The Cloud” (This is also one hell of a character showcase for Voyager and shows their instant chemistry!)
I know that’s more than 10, but I love those episodes to pieces!

I've been saying for years that VOY was a show that maintained a solid okay-to-good quality level for most of its run, which on average might have made it the worst of the three 90s shows and it may have had fewer truly standout episodes, but it also had a lot fewer just outright stinkers compared to TNG and DS9, as well.
I'm more likely to throw on a random VOY episode because there are a greater number of perfectly nice hours of television to enjoy a meal to in its run compared to TNG, because there's a much higher ratio of episodes like "Man of the People" for every "Best of Both Worlds" than there are "Thresholds" to "Timelesses," and DS9's serialized nature makes it harder to just pick an episode and jump in sometimes compared to VOY's episodic structure.
A lot of the VOY hate has always felt like confirmation bias to me. It's easy to hold up "Measure of a Man" or "In the Pale Moonlight" against "Retrospect" if you aren't willing to put "Code of Honor" or "Let He Who is Without Sin" go up against "Blink of an Eye" in return.

It's inconceivable to me how 'Meld' isn't in everyone's top three of this series. To each their own naturally, but all the other positives notwithstanding, Brad Dorurif just completely hands everyone their asses performance-wise. They all had to come correct with their 'A' game as a result, and the audience reaped the benefits. He's a treasure.
I'd also like to give a nod to 'Warlord'. One of the very few opportunities the writers provided Jennifer Lien to show what a skilled performer she was. To say she was impressive would be under an understatement.

This list is reminding me of so much, also, like how much I really enjoyed Workforce and The Thaw. In all these top episode videos I appreciate the interesting takes you have on the episodes. You're recognizing different levels than I might have noticed, which is fun - or things I have noticed, which is also fun! I always enjoyed the Living Witness episode as well. A stellar episode. Another one I like that I don;t believe you mentioned is the one where species 8472 recreates Star Fleet. Maybe the common feature of all the episodes I like is that they promote a new way of looking at familiar or expected scenarios. That;s what makes me like the species 8472 Star Fleet episode. I've never done a top 10 list of episodes for myself and I've never attempted to articulate why I like one episode over another. I can see it would be an interesting project. I wrote honestly about my experiences being bullied and discriminated against for my autism and a lot of my critique letters included some variation of "that many people being that ableist is unrealistic."

After having been introduced to Star Trek with The Motion Picture and The Search for Spock on TV with my parents, Star Trek Voyager was the first TV series of the franchise I watched (and the first I got on DVD for my birthday) as my geography teacher was praising the series in his lessons (or the breaks, I can't remember) and I loved it! I'm thus a bit biased, I think, when it comes to the quality of Voyager as a whole. Until Lower Decks came along, Voyager was my favorite Star Trek TV series.
My favorite Star Trek film is First Contact. It aired twice over a suprisingly short time span and I watched it both times with glee, mostly due to the notion that money no longer exists, which paved my way of becoming interested in politics and eventually becoming an anarchist.

When I came back to watch a Voyager episode after having not watched any in a good while - I went straight to Living Witness for exactly the reasons you cited. It is a fantastic play about how history is recorded and used by power and a musing on how we ourselves will be remembered in the future. So I'm all for it being number one. I was wondering where the heck it was because it HAD to be there and then boom. Number one. Fits.

I loved latent image, year of hell, the melting crew one too. The Harry slipstream one was good.
I could be pulling from the wrong show, but I also loved the one where they go on the away mission and come back with PTSD from like jungle war and they go back and relive the war only to find out it was like decades or centuries old and there was this tower to keep a massacre from being forgotten.

I really like "Day of Honor" and "Nemesis" (I know they come right after each other but that's honestly just a weird coincidence). The first one was a good B'Elanna episode, which we also sadly didn't get enough of and Seven facing the people whose lives were ruined by the Borg was very interesting to see. And "Nemesis" showed how insidious propaganda and brainwashing can be, especially in the times of war and used Chakotay greatly in my opinion.

"Blink Of An Eye" is probably my favorite Voyager episode, the whole concept is extremely cool and executed so well, and I think it's an almost perfect episode to show someone who's new to Trek what Trek is all about. "Equinox" is another one that would have easily made my Top 10 because in my opinion, it's one of the episodes that uses Voyager's concept best, and shows what other path Voyager might have taken, had they been less lucky and more desperate for survival.
However, I'm here to drop an even hotter take: I'm a Kes fan. I love the character, love the character's whole concept, don't love what the writers did to her, except in some rare cases, and one of the best Kes episodes that I never see mentioned anywhere in my opinion is "Cold Fire". In this episode, Kes meets other Ocampa for the first time in her life and learns just how powerful her species can actually become when they learn to master their abilities. Up to this point, she often used her powers kind of by accident, but now, she's given a chance to actually learn how to control them. The scene where she accidentally makes Tuvok's blood boil truly shocked me when I first saw it, and the conclusion at which she decided that she didn't want to use these powers anymore because of how she had almost lost control over herself over suddenly feeling so powerful felt sad, but very understandable. This could have been a defining episode for Kes' character arc had the writers handled her better overall. Getting over her fears and trauma and learning to properly use the powers she'd gotten a glimpse of in this episode could have been awesome character growth, but alas, she had to switch from scared kid to Destroyer God Mode with no build-up whatsoever at the beginning of season 4 instead.

I’ve got no issues with your list. Gives me a new appreciation for Voyager. Given the ups and downs from the most recent Trek, you are right that Voyager is consistent, not always great but not a total mess.
Living Witness is a curious choice for the #1 choice but I get it. It would be nice to see that version of the Doctor in Discovery. That said, if I had to make a list of the top 20 episodes of all of Trek, I don’t think I would include it. Can’t wait to see that list.

One thing I love about Living Witness that you didn't mention is that it's one of the very few times we get a look at the elusive consequences of Voyager's actions. At that point we'd had four seasons of Voyager tooling around the Delta quadrant, basically doing whatever they liked, solving problems messily, by force or by deception, and then never having to face up to any of it because of that lack of continuity. Living Witness isn't continuity of course, but it does give a look at how all the people Voyager screwed over (inadvertently and not) might have remembered them.
Tuvix is an interesting episode because it's kind of great as a self-contained episode of drama (and I like Tom Wright as Tuvix), but fits horribly into a show with supposedly ongoing characters. It also always felt like the point at which the Voyager writers confirmed they really didn't know what the heck they were doing with Janeway; they wanted her to be tough, uncompromising and not too woman-y, and accidentally made her into a psychopath.

My favourite Voyager episode will forever be the Killing Game. It's the ultimate Holodeck episode.
The holodeck is always treated like a lighthearted fun romp in Star Trek(and even the Orville) when it's not trying to kill people, but is just taken for granted, never questioned what its existence means. It's genuinely a society changing technology; being able to simulate any place, at any time with any scenario is huge.
The Killing Game explores those possibilies such a technolog opens up, while still being extremely fun.
It got fun Anti-Nazi subterfuge, secret meetings in hallways, Harry stands up for himself, and the final victory hinges on the nicest guy on the ship pretending to be a Klingon warrior and leading a bunch of drunk Klingons into battle against the Nazis.
And it's so refreshing that the stupid prime directive isn't even brought up when they ultimately share the holodeck technology, it's just the right thing to do, regulations be dammed. That's the spirit of Star Trek, getting to know other people, learning to understand them and their plight and helping where possible.
The big unfortunate thing isn't even in the episode, it happens in the reset between episodes, when the Voyager gets repaired off screen. The crew were so thorough with repairs, they even remove the holo emitters in the hallways and in front of sickbay(the holographic explosion exits sickbay, there have to be emitters there). Poor Doctor, he finally has the means to leave sickbay without the mobile emitter and they tear it down. Really makes the crew seem like jerks, especially after he's been stitching them up this whole time and saved the ship.

Honestly, really good list! I personally might have put "Killing Game" on there, as well as that one episode (can't think of the name right now) where there's the ethical debate about using the treatment developed by a Cardassian doctor who experimented on Bajorans during the occupation. Other than that, though, I would say solid, justifiable choices!

Happy to see Living Witness at a spot I'd probably give it myself! I love how it gears you up for evil voyager fun times then goes into a fascinating look at revisionist history and its affects on cultures. Glad to see you include Course: Oblivion and Author, Author too, especially the latter, I've always had a soft, if nostalgic, spot for it. The episode really explores the topic, something I think Voyager does well in its best episodes. Shattered and Latent Image are also stellar choices. Personally, I hold issue somewhat with the specific ethical dilemma the episode puts on the Doctor, since it seems to undermine Harry's importance to the show imo. Isn't he a senior officer? Then yes, while that sucks and I won't remiss you for disliking command structures, then Harry was objectively the person to save! If it had a lower ranked character who we still already knew, I think this wouldn't bother me so much. Despite that, Robert Picardo is always amazing. Stuff like The Thaw and Workforce wouldn't be in my top 10 but I'm glad to see them get love.
Agreed with most of your honorable mentions being greats as well. I'm not sure Tuvix would even be in my top 20 admittedly, but I agree it's a great one for giving the audience this big moral dilemma alone, as well as offering a solution to agree or disagree with (whether or not the crew should have had more agreement or disagreement too) As somebody else said, Kes also shines in the episode. The feeling of her crying to Janeway is hampered a little bit by her relationship with Neelix being creepy/gross but it's still stunning. The idea that her love drives a captain to kill is amazing.

When Voyager was airing, Tuvix was the episode that first made me think that it might end up being a good show after all. Same criticism, of course - there should have been consequences - but really, that's a criticism of those episodes that followed, not Tuvix itself.

And that jar jar bings that overshadowed way better cass by traping her, i dont blame the actor, but he was plain too annopying to care about him even in better episodes. So yeah it would hav been bold and daring keeping him even as alternative of, we keep him, tuvok, and neelix. That could have been fun.

    1: "Year of Hell"
Same reasons as you, this made VOY's situation in the Delta Quadrant real for me.
    2: "Barge of the Dead"
A B'Ellanna episode. She's my favorite character in all of Trek. I like most of her episodes but this one I've rewatched a dozen times and only recently understood why this episode strikes the most significant, personal chord for me out of all them.
    3: "Dark Frontier"
A Seven episode. My second favorite character admittedly but this episode Carrie's alot of found memories of when I was a kid rewatching on that old recorded VHS tape with all those 90s commercials. Fun times.
    4: "The Equinox"
This is my Mom's favorite for similar reasons why I like "Year of Hell" she likes "Equinox". For me this was Janeway's Moby Dick episode.
    5: "Dragon's Teeth"
My Dad's favorite episode. Action packed, asked alotnof pertinent questions about history and who writes it and who's telling the truth. Wish we got to see more of the Vaadwaur tho.
    6: "Flashback"
A Tuvok episode. We get to see the Excelsior again, my favorite ship in all of sci-fi, fills in gaps left behind by "Undiscovered Country".
    7: "Course: Oblivion"
This was a very depressing episode. Hard to watch but for all the right reasons.
    8: "Alliances"
I actually liked the Kazon as an enemy. I found them genuinely fascinating and we get learn more about not just their history but the wider history of the Delta Quadrant at large.
    9: "Warlord"
This Kes episode was actually pretty badass. Like most fans, I'm not super fond of the character but I like my Jekyll and Hyde episodes and you can't get more Jekyll and Hyde than telepathic whiz kid vs immortal Adolf Hitler.
    10: "Caretaker"
Again, i just like pilots. I love watching these and the finale's back-to-back. Second only to DS9, VOY's evolution is the most fascinating to watch.

My problem with Tuvix, other than that it's never brought up again, is that there was just nothing to make this even a little bit more grey. There is no timer on the Tuvix problem. And Thomas Riker is the living proof, that it must be possible to bring back Nelix and Tuvok without killing Tuvix. I mean the crew of voyager overcomes technological hurdles, that the entirety of star fleet engineer corps couldn't overcome with all the resources of the Federation. Their nurse (!), who also pilots the ship if there is nothing to do on sick bay developed a warp 10 drive in his off time. But they don't even try to save Tuvix. They don't even bring it up. They murder him, because he needs to be murdered by the end of the episode no matter what. It casts the captain in a terrible light for doing it, it casts the doctor in a terrible light for helping it, it casts the entire crew in a terrible light for allowing it and it casts Tuvok in a terrible light for not immediately incarcerate Janeway for murder until they reach the next starbase.
