Pretty much a crossover knife from pocket to fixed blade survival. I happen to like big folders and this knife does not disappoint. The wide blade options that cold steel offers are truly impressive from a durability standpoint. A lot of people do not like cold steel knives and they make their arguments but, Lynn Thompson and Andrew Demko have made more contributions to the knife community in recent history than virtually anyone else. The company offers a blade for any purpose that you need.

Love this knife, this is my EDC when at work, the size is helpful when trying to manipulate with one hand when wearing gloves, tough enough to hold up to the oilfield but affordable enough that if for some reason it gets broken. Handle and blade are easy to spray clean when it gets greasy. 10/10

Own one of these myself, and I absolutely love it. For the size, I have felt that it carries amazingly well. A total workhorse. Couldn't recommend it more! One easier way to open it is to press on the lock and flick it open, as the thumbstuds can get rough if you are using it all day with no gloves. Great video!

People often mock these knives from the viewpoint of being an unreasonably large pocketknife, which it is, but it makes more sense to think of them as a fixed blade knife that folds. For a fixed blade knife they're a fairly modest size and they're made so well they'll stack up in durability and use with most any actual fixed blade. You don't have to carry a sheath and it only takes up half the size. It could fit it a lot of small pockets like horizontally on a backpacking waistbelt or in the administration pocket of any pack. This isn't to say everyone should get one but I do think there's a realistic niche where these big folders have advantages other than just being a comically large pocketknife.

    • @DL-ij7tf
      @DL-ij7tf 2 роки тому

@DTL I actually agree about the 4Max, I just don't think I'd use it or like it enough to tote it around even in a pack. I love the AD10 and some of CS's other knives including the Airlite but I wish they all had steel liners, a feature I think any hard use folder should include. The AD10 is aluminum so that's something.

It's not everywhere you can conceal carry a fixed blade, and this is where the 4-Max comes into play. It's as close to a fixed blade as any folder comes. I carry an Italian 4-Max CPM-20CV in a belt holder, an SR1 in my pocket and a Spartan around my neck. :)
Btw the lock-pin on the Scout is smaller than on the 20CV version.

@@theheretic3764 I was having the same dilemma. Had to order online without being able to see or handle them. The blade shape is very similar but it's all in the handle. It changes the dynamic completely. The 4Max is much better for any chopping and the bigger blade is great for a multitude of tasks. The AD10 is more refined, and will perform the same tasks but the handle position will fatigue your arm more if you chop with it. I bought the 4 Max first but still wanted the AD10. If I had bought the AD10 I'm not sure I would have gone for the 4 Max Scout. I use my 4Max Scout in the woods because it's just bad ass crazy and puts a smile on my face everytime I use it. The AD10 for home when I want a strong folder on me. Try and get your hands on one as you will understand the handle dynamic instantly. I have found that I have a tough time choosing between this and an Esee 4 S35VN for an edc that can do hard use tasks and squeeze into a survival role. They are similar in size and both weigh 10 ounces (with sheath on esee). Each have their advantages and disadvantages. Esee has better steel, a lifetime warranty, and obviously can’t break the lock. 4 max is half the price, so even if you somehow managed to break it you can buy a second and still be less than the esee. So warranty isn’t a big deal here. I highly doubt you will break the lock. 4 max is actually more ergonomic even though it’s a folder, due to the large handle. And the 4 max is a better chopper because it carries its full weight on the knife, whereas the esee leaves 2 ounces on the sheath. Plus the longer handle lets you get a better wrist flick. The esee batons slightly better because there’s no thumb stud in the way. Overall I like them both for this role and have a hard time choosing, but right now I’m leaning towards the 4 max.

I will prefer a fixed blade for heavy duty tasks ,any time of the year. For sure is a beast of a knife , folds and rests in your pocket, but i wont replace for my activities my Lionsteel T5, for this bad boy. It makes sense for a constractor to cary and use it also.

I have edc’d the Italian 4max in 20 cv steel for a little over 3 years, awesome design and ergonomics. The one downside I would say is I can’t count how many times my pocket clip has snagged and bent

Also if you are just packing a knife it makes sense fixed blades can be annoying in packs and you need a sheath also puncturing your pack, and carrying a sheath one around other campers hikers

Love my cold steels. Only problem is choosing which one(s) to carry. Mostly EDC 4Max scout, Talwar xhp, Large Espada, or Vaquero with a Tuff Lite. If that won’t get it done you need ammo.

I was shopping for a large folder and it came down to this and the SR1. I love the look of the 4max but the SR1 went on sale and i got it for about $200 less. I'm very happy with it. still too large to be my EDC, but its a fun knife. maybe one day ill add this one to the collection.

    Great video!
2 use case scenarios that you touched on but warrant a little bit of expansion:
    1. CA where Cold Steel is located (Ventura) allows you to carry any sized folding knife concealed (as long as it’s not a Bali, switchblade, or double edged) which is why Lynn has been into oversized folders for so many decades. If you want a ten inch survival knife but it has to be a folder, then this is it.
    2. If you’re just a big oversized dude, this knife might feel normal to you.

G'day Aaron, yep love the beefy fellas, particularly from CS. Only problem is if I had one of these many of my other folders and indeed smaller fixys become somewhat obsolete; its already a bit that way with the Recon 1 and Gator premo. Cheers Duke.

I recently bought one and like it very much but mostly for the cool factor , for carry I prefer the more versatile voyager model when it comes to being better at doing various things, actually compare the thickness of this blade to a voyager ( I have 4xl models, tanto ,clip and 2 drop points) I think the voyagers also in Aus 10 a , have more of a variety of uses .

Yes I own it and love it but what I did I took my locksmith files which are very fine and I halfway down the blade I put a quarter inch serrated edge just enough to rip it up

I really like my 4max, and the AUS10 is waaay better than I thought it’d be, it takes a really keen convex edge, holds it pretty well, and it strops back to keen quick-n-easy.
I never “edc” it, thats kinda silly for 99.9% of my life, but every time I travel or trail it certainly rides in my all-purpose Vanquest FTIM pouch with all the essentials… it kick out my SR1 (g10/s35vn) because the 4max is more comfortable and it slices better.
The AD10 is a great option for a pack strap or chest bag.
But.. I dont like the big gap between the scale and thumb stud, its kinda awkward. The handle could be a bit thicker through the index finger area.

Hi, I have both the 4max scout and the elite, which one would be better to take on a camping hiking trip, I know the elite is more hi end, or do you think keep the elite in reserve because it's more expensive to replace? Just asking, I really love both these knives so tuff really good

Good stuff Aaron. This knife to me fits what I call 'transitional-zone' of folding knives. I believe you did a good job here with explanations of just that. While to some not all that practical to even marveling, entertaining conversation piece. That said, instead of macho big-knife bragging rights... it has a suitable place in the folding survival/utility genre. I like the handle design and size best of all. The locking mechanism is proven very effective, rugged, and un-likely to fail from reasonable to more demanding conditions. Quite a good deal at $75 PRIME!!! My Ol' Spartan is in my 'transitional zone' I still have a nearly minty condition with box Blackout Rajah II... that I guess is now cool-factor grail-status for Cold Steel Collectors... So I have decided not put any mileage on 'er to devalue it. Are you still 'rockin' a Rajah II? Any longer term mileage & thoughts on it?

I got a mini recon tanto at the same time i got my 4 max because i wasn't positive i would be able to carry the 4 max every day. Now that i have both in hand i think i will be able to carry the 4 max a lot of the time. The mini recon is nice too though and it will definitely find some pocket time as well.

Another great folder from CS! I might have to add this one to my collection. Many of us prefer extra large folding knives for EDC, me included. I routinely carry many of the XL cold steels. I'm rocking the XL Voyager tanto today. I've got a large Espada on the way, which should really be designated an XL, and the XL Espada should be called an XXL.

This folder is a fringing beast, I baton the shit outta mine and it still folds up like it was new. It is stronger than most fixed blades. AUS 10 steel overall is well balanced and easy to sharpen. It’s a steal at $70… no other knife at that price point comes even close.
