Already being called the "Working Man's 4-Max", the 4-Max Scout is every bit as strong as its predecessor but now made with more affordable materials. Check out Andrew Demko's vision behind the discovery and creation of this beast of a knife.
I told my mother about this knife since she likes to get me knives as gifts. This is definitely a knife that would last a lifetime.

@Walker Derick That might just be the reaction between the oils on your skin and the stainless steel... that's normally what causes "metallic" smells... metal itself has no odor. It's nothing to worry about... there's far more nickel and chromium (both toxic on their own) in food-grade stainless steels. The heavy metal cations do not leave the alloy, so they remain in a non-toxic form.
@Walker Derick wipe the blade in some clay. that should take care of the smell :)
@David P. The Medfords are beautiful, love them. But with so much money in a knife, most will never do more than open mail as the risk not scratching it. That is why I have never bought one.

Andrew Demko is my knife hero. His triad lock is the main reason I keep coming back to Cold Steel, especially after ownership changed hands recently. I bought two AD10s and a 4Max Scout last month. Love them. 👍

For me Demko is the best knifedesigner alife. After watching a big amount of hard use tests on youtube about different knifes I truely believe the tri ad lock is the strongest lock on the market.

I got my 4Max Scout for under $80 at Amazon. It is a really nice and sturdy knife! This will be my last Cold Steel knife that I buy...for now.

I finally see the wisdom in the 4Max Scout, I ordered one today. I just don't want to be in a situation where I wish I had a stronger knife, or having to hold back some because my knife may break.
I typically love big folders and small fixed blades. If I am at work I carry 2 folders, if I am not working I carry 2 folders and a fixed blade. But if I am on an outing in the forest or desert I carry a big folder, a smaller folder and a small fixed blade. I can see the 4Max Scout will have lots of potential.
Two of the greatest dudes out there talking knives. Love Cold Steel. Keep up the amazing work guys.
Make your own pin! Good extra safety. Good strong knife, brilliant lock. I buy nothing but Coldsteel folders, simply for the lock. And they fit my hand!
Agreed same here. That’s why I prefer the black talon 2 over the spyderco matriarch 2 for example. I like durability and quality. I don’t like anything that feels too lightweight and cheap. That’s just me 😊
Love the idea! I beat on my US made 4-Max like it owes me rent money. It’s by far my favorite folder. Was just hacking through 3’ magnolia tree branches this morning with it
I had the Italian 4Max and loved it. Was contemplating picking up another when I came across this. Yes, I’ll be getting one. Even if paying full MSRP, it’s a great deal and AUS10 is a great choice for such a monster. Well done.

Even though I have a US made 4-Max I will be getting a 4-max Scout. It’s going in the glove box of my truck and my other is in my pocket as always! Looking forward to getting one
I'm a fan of the Aus10a that Cold Steel heat treats. I have the XL Voyager and the 4max Scout, both are excellent for hard use. I can split and chop wood with these knives and barely need to strop afterwards

Sweet . I have a handful of this fellas designs and they kick ass. I’m here becasue I got a good deal on this and like the ad 10 and 15 . Original Goat had these aluminum scales for this so I put them on after waiting for arrival and they’re sweet . Totally changed the ad10 .

Back in October I got my first ever Cold Steel knife an AD15 and fell in love 😍 then for Christmas I was gifted an AD10 and couldn't be happier about them . The only problem I have is a Cold Steel addiction 🤣 and I beat myself up for not buying Cold Steel knives sooner lol . Payday I'm ordering a Recon 1 tanto 🔪💥🗡️

My trio is complete: Ultimate Hunter, AD10 and the recently acquired 4max scout. AD10 is my most comfortable in use but the 4max Scout is a no brainer at the price for those that can't afford or justify a 4max.
That might be the perfect trio.
Price was a major factor for me not getting a 4 Max. I am definitely getting this one as soon as it lands on shops.

Personally, I’m a huge fan of your Griv-Ex scales, and it would be great if more folders had that option. The Rajah 3 just might feel a little better in the hand than the Recon 1 or AK-47. :D

The A in aus10a stands for annealed this is soft steel many manufacturers offer a better steel at the same or lower price
Now I knwo the mysterious hole is for safety pin! I like that finger-saving idea. A lot of youtubers are batoning(abusing) 4max and other CS folders.

“Why not carry 2 knives?” Love it I carry 3 blades minimum! At least one of those blades is always a Coldsteel.
A blade finger choil allows the handle to facilitate your hold on the actual blade the way a lanyard facilitates your hold on the handle. Its not necessary or helpful on a fixed blade that is big enough but its super nice on any folding knife. (maybe less necessary on a triad lock knife)
A mini 4-Max, basically the AD10 with a 4-Max shaped handle, would be totally amazing.
Glad to hear Demko diss choils for wasting available edge.
Next up: "5 Max. For When The Fan Is Clogged"
Really though, I have too many 5 and 6 inch knives for a 5 Max to be the "For When The Fan Is Clogged" Knife. Especially when we have the Hold Out I which may still be my all time favorite knife.
If anything is going to be the most suitable knife ever for the situation to end all situations of totally overwhelming the fan, something that will stand the test of time and leave an eternal mark on the knife industry, it has to be the "7 Max", or "AD10XXXL".
Just skip the AD10XXL, nobody with an XXL wouldn't be able to do the same job with an XXXL.
I think the blade length of 4 Max is just about perfect for any cutting tasks😂😂

I love what you've done here and I will have to pick one up when they're available. I liked the 4max, but as you stated, I felt that price point was too high. Especially when you have to chase it being made in the right country/time if you know what I mean. I love the scale down that you've done here and my first impression is that the price seems fair.

I think there were discussions which version of the 4-MAX is the preferable:
"Made in USA", or "Made in Italy".
If I remember correctly, there was a preference for "Made in Italy".
I don't have an opinion in regards to this topic.
I'm German and very happy with the quality of "Made in Taiwan" and I love AUS-10 😘.

Looks great. Would love to have a Tanto blade version. Would like more of a pointy blade.
4MAX proper. With G-10 and S35V heat treated in Taiwan… the solid knife connoisseur’s favorite beast. 5MAX is also on that high quality list.
Please make a tanto blade with G10 or micarta.

For work, other than fine work (game processing, leatherwork,etc.), tanto blades are a MASSIVE plus.

Well I'll paste a few words of it then:
Arctic survival guru, the legendary Mors Kochanski, in a winter camping symposium in Duluth, MN, called a choil on a knife “a waste of space…that’s a thing I despise greatly…” (See the whole presentation.)
In his book “The Tactical Knife,” author and cutlery expert James Morgan Ayres comments:
“I see the choil as a waste of a valuable edge. The edge in front of the guard is where you can bring the most pressure to bear to cut resistant materials, and it is useful for press cuts, shear cuts, and notching. The edge an inch or so in front of the guard requires about four times as much force for a given cut.
“Some choils, due to their design, can get snagged and hung up while cutting soft materials, which could be a bad thing.” (The Tactical Knife, James Morgan Ayres, page 72)

I like for example the ESEE-6 3D , but the choil I could live without.
Same for the Becker BK5 which is discontinued. It has a huge choil.
Why putting the finger on the relative thin steel blade when you have a comfortable handle to exert power with.
Pull the edge back close near the handle, that's my preference.
When there's a choil , you're forced to use it. When trying to cut things, the material to be cut always gets into the choil. Very annoying. So the use of that very choil is a must. Not cool in my opinion.
@@Ve-suvius Yeah, I stated in my first post that on fixed blades especially, a choil is not necessary or even helpful. Its on a folding knife where its nice, especially a small one.

My EDC is an ak-47. I don't have much experience with aus10a. However I can say that with my s35vn blade I cut the inside of a steel washer in order to make it fit the size screw I was using. The tip was fine and only needed minimal sharpening. Can it match that?

If I’m not mistaken, the latter is in 8cr13mov. Just my two cents, I’d go with the Scout. In my limited knife experience, Aus10a steel should hold an edge longer than 8cr. Cheers, stranger. :)

Most Cold Steel knives are absolutely amazing. Unfortunately I live in a very hot climate and it's hard for me to carry heavy knives in my shorts and jogging pants. Can you please make a folder with a 4" blade, that weighs no more than 4 oz?

I would LOVE to see a "TORTURE" test between the Cold Steel 4 Max vs CRKT XOC Folding Knife. Which would be the "KING" of Tolerance and Strength. I think the Deadbolt Lock on the CRKT XOC might give the Tri-Ad Lock some Competition. Let's see if Cold Steel is willing to put the Cold Steel 4 Max vs CRKT XOC Folding Knife. That would be an acceptable CHALLENGE. Come on Cold Steel, Put your BEST against CRKT's Best.
Question: Do you measure all your knives from the start of the cutting edge to the tip? Because I have a Recon 1 (which I love btw) and it's listed as having a 4 inch blade, but I only measure 3 and 3/4ths inches
