      @@joex you're right, it's overpriced. I have said it since they put it out and I read the specs. Aluminum liners and those tiny screws doesn't justify the price. I have purchased one just to see how it is and I find the blade too wide and short. I prefer the blade from Recon1, it's perfect. The handle while ergonomic it's for small size hands and I don't appreciate those finger grooves. A straight handle is the best. I have paid 180€ for mine. The lock bar was grinded asymmetrical, but I let it slide as it doesn't affect the functionality. Thanks for your work, brother. Best regards.

    Thanks for the test Joe. I've taken a lot of flak as a knife reviewer over the years for pushing back against the supersteel craze for survival blades. This once again is proof that I was right. Even the Dutch Bushcraft Knife Channel guys are finally realizing this. They were one of the channels pushing this craze the most. 3V and Busse's INFI are the only supersteels that can live up to the toughness repuation, but they are expensive and 3V is harder to sharpen than AUS-10, AUS-8, 1095, 420HC, Sandvik, 1070, etc. I think AUS-10 is probably the best overall value for a hard use blade. Tough, rust resistant, affordable, yet holds a better edge than AUS-8 and 1095. I would love to see Cold Steel switch the SRK, Recon Tanto, Master Hunter, and Leatherneck models to AUS-10. For the money, they would be oustanding with this steel. Cheers, Jason

      thanks for your comment, i know some videos of DBK, i am not a fan of them, too much drama.... i also think that AUS10 or 8 would be a very good choice for a survival blade!! cheers!

    • @Ruger44Redhawk
      @Ruger44Redhawk Рік тому +2

      Agreed. I don't own any knives in 3V or INFI or Elmax or Cruwear. I only know of them through knife reviewers like Mr. Joe X, DBK, Pete at Cedric & Ada Gear and Outdoors and many others. I think the "super duper" steels are like Gore-tex, just a way to upsell and gouge people with the newest craze. Between 2004 and 2016 and picked up all of these super steel knives and now they all sit in a box collecting dust. I have regressed to the old school stuff like 1095, 5160, 440C, 420HC and 154CM. They all worked fine for decades so why change? In the last four years I've grabbed a bunch of pristine like new Buck 110 3 dot 1980-81 with 440C and the thicker squared off bolsters for $60 each and they are awesome! No moving parts, internal springs, screws and can take enough abuse with that strong lockback. They work and are easy as hell to put a razor sharp edge on just with a pocket ceramic rod. That's just one example. I do occasionally mix in a Gerber 06 Manual with S30V because of that stout strike pommel and a couple others in 154CM and 420HC. And as for all the fixed blades I have, Joe (and Mayor Fuglycool) have shown that my Ontario SP6 in good 'ole 1095/1075 will take a freaking beating! As will the Ontario RD in 1/4" 5160 steel . All of those I got for less than $70. I guess I just don't see the point in spending $200, $300 or $400 for a folder or fixed blade when plenty of great (and sometimes better) options are available in the budget arena.

      @andrewfournier8817 Рік тому

      I sometimes enjoy DBK. But their bias has been against general hard use and towards edge retention. They catch the most brittle stuff, obviously, but their 'sweet spot' is probably a much more brittle knife than would do well here. As a look at camping knives and not last ditch survival tools it isn't a completely unreasonable bias- except, of course, for the price/performance issues. Definitely more AUS10 in commercial lineups would be nice

    • @sovietrepublic38
      @sovietrepublic38 2 роки тому +1

      The cross section of 4Max is obviously larger than AD10. It's not a fair test.
      The Charpy impact toughness of S35VN is generally higher than AUS10 at the same hardness level.
      That is to say, if you put S35VN in 4Max, the knife can be harder, more wear-resistant but also tougher than AUS10 version.
      Nice test though...Always good to see the destruction test.

    Shame it didn’t hold up as good as the 4max but considering I only payed $118 US (107 euros) on amazon I’d say I got a pretty good knife for the price
    Also I think the hype is from Andrew demkos AD10
    He designed most of the popular knives from cold steel and always had his own custom knives he’d sell for up to $1500 and the AD10 was one of them
    So he allowed cold steel to make a knife based off of that and if you didn’t know better you’d think the $1000 custom was the same as the one from cold steel
    Well only if you ask to make it look like that because you know it’s custom so he can do whatever and there’s some crazy looking ones

    The cross section of 4Max is obviously larger than AD10. It's not a fair test.
    The Charpy impact toughness of S35VN is generally higher than AUS10 at the same hardness. It's a powder metallurgy steel so can achieve better toughness than cast-forged steels at the same hardness.
    That is to say, if you put S35VN in 4Max, the knife can be harder, more wear-resistant but also tougher than AUS10 version.
    It's not because I don't like sharpening knives, but I am a steel nerd.
    Nice test though...Always good to see the destruction test.
    I got my AD10 at 100 USD, I'm happy with it.
    I agree that >150 USD is overpriced.

    I think the thing that some people are missing when it comes to this knife? Is that it is a cutting knife that chops well.
    That was the result of my own personal review.
    That The most practical thing to do is purchase the AD 10 And the 4 Max scout together to work in tandem with one another.
    The former being a very good cutter that chops well. The latter being a very good chopper that cuts well.
    The scout is also the better overall survival night as when you look at fixed blade survival knives there’s a reason that despite all the new metals 1095 is still king.
    Because a knife can dull faster. Rust easier. And be an overall cheaper knife- but if it isn’t tough and it chips and brakes in a survival situation it’s useless to you.
    It is in this that the scout shines. It’s mechanics are sound it’s made of very durable components and it’s blade steel is acceptable in edge retention.
    It’s relatively easy to sharpen which is also crucial from the survivalist perspective and in folders I don’t know of a knife that matches it in durability.
    Both of these in a pack or one in either pocket are an extremely sound combination.
    On a sidenote?
    I haven’t uploaded my review on these two blades yet. I’m not finished editing it.
    Would you mind if I referred to your videos on these two knives in my review? As well as provided links to them in the description?

    Joe people rave about the AD10 because “Andrew Demco” made it!!!…OOOOO, AHHHH OOOOOO! BS…lol… s35vn is overrated “super” steel… holds edge long but is brittle. Demco did design the 4 max (original) but cold steel used his design to make the 4max scout out of AUS 10a,which in my opinion is one of the best overall steels! Don’t get me wrong, without your level of abuse, the AD 10 is a good knife, works super smooth, feels great in hand ,but not at the level of toughness that the sr1 lite or 4 max scout have.
