I was living with a leaking, corroded one and couldn't afford the high plumbing cost. After watching your video I really felt confident that I could do it. Things to praise about this video: 1. You jumped right to it - no long intro with crap music or crappy speech telling me what you were about to do - you did it! 2. Well lit, close camera work. Everything was easy to watch and follow, I didn't have to pause or rewind one bit 3. Articulation and clear instruction. I can't stress this one enough - esp in the DIY tutorial realm. You are awesome. This video saved me $400. I purchased a $100 garbage disposal from Home Depot and I was quoted $400 just to have it installed. I ended up paying a $70 service fee just for having a plumber show up to my house to give me a ridiculous $400 installation estimate. He wouldn't give me the quote until he arrived. After watching your video, I did it myself in less than 30 minutes. I wish I found your video before calling the plumber. I would have saved an extra $70. Thank you for taking the time to post this video. People like you increase the quality of life for all homeowners by helping them save money.

I want you to know how much I appreciated your video. I watched it a few times and had it on pause in the background as I took out my Badger 5 and installed a new Badger 500, by myself, with some help from from my wife, and my brother. The trickiest part was that the disposal was hooked directly to an electric box and there was no plug, so I had to watch the electrical section twice, so I knew how to wire the green, white, and black wires. All went swimmingly and now it all is done and looks and runs great. I keep looking under my sink to admire the work that you taught me. THANK YOU!
Thank you. I installed my garbage disposal after my plumber was unable to show 3 times. Your video was a success. No leaks, works great! Your voice is peaceful. Its so soothing that i have now watched 3 more of your videos! :). The only advice I got elsewhere, was to use my car jack to raise and hold the old and new garbage disposal. Was the easiest job I’ve had in my 1960’s home.
You're correct Sherri. I posted earlier about the hardest part was lifting the disposal and getting it to lock in place. It took me many attempts. I kept getting only one of the three sides to catch. I was seriously considering using my car jack to get it into place. It was pretty hard to hold it with one hand and keeping it balanced enough to get it into the final locked position.

Great video! My disposal was dead, nothing was happening, after going through all the troubleshooting, all I got was a humming noise. Then I disassembled it from under the sink, took to my utility tub and deep cleaned. I found a piece of plastic in it, I believed that that was the problem, but not sure because even after removing it, all I got was still the humming sound and I was glad I didn't put it back in before making sure it was working. I was about to give up and go buy a new one, but then decided to take another look inside, I saw a little piece of food still stuck in there, I didn't think that that was the issue, but I got it out with my needle tool and guess what? It worked! This video was great to help me put it back on. My major problem was the weight of the disposal, I had to use several things from around the house to give me leverage but I'm really happy that I've saved money from having to hire a plumber and from having to buy a new one. I'm pretty sure that if I had hired a plummer I'd have to buy a new one as plumber's don't usually have the patience to troubleshoot the problem.
Just installed my first ever garbage disposal all by myself. There may have been some foul language and screaming along the way but I still did it beginning to end. Couldn’t have done it without you! Thanks so much!
This was a great video. I have lived at my home for the past 10 years, and I have 2 dishwashers. One of the dishwashers is connected to the garbage disposal and the other isn't. The dishwasher that's connected to the garbage disposal always drained the water from the top of the sink, and it never made any sense till I watched this video and found out that the plug needs to be knocked out.NOW, I am so happy that the dishwasher is draining properly. I saved a house call from a plumber, and I'm so grateful to have watched your video.Thanks sooooooooooo much!!!!
I hadn’t ran my dishwasher in over 4 years. Decided to turn it on today and it wouldn’t drain. I watched several videos and spent a lot of time troubleshooting it. Turns out when we replaced the garbage disposal a few years ago, my husband didn’t knock that plug out. All the info I needed to get the dishwasher draining again. Great video. I tried to do it myself from other videos and gave up. Then I called about 15 different plumbers who DIDN'T want to work on a Saturday. So it left me back to UA-cam. I watched multiple videos on this topic and I took a little from each one. When it came down to it, I had my laptop right next to me while I was working under the sink. Long story short, GREAT JOB! Thanks for your video. My 19-year old Insinkerator 1/2 hp wouldn't spin at normal speed, even after using the unclog tool many times. I bought the same replacement model and your video made it clear that this was a simple job; just a bit more difficult than changing a light bulb. Took me one hour, and saved the cost of a plumber.

Very thorough video. I replaced a garbage disposal that had two installation errors. 3 screws not used and a gasket on the wrong side. Amazing it worked at all. Nice to see an installation done correctly.
Omg! I was watching videos all day (ok not all day but it felt like it) about installing garbage disposals and finally you explained the wiring. Other videos kept saying to match up the colors of the wires together but my pig tail wires were the same color. Thank you for explaining the ribbed wire goes to the white and the smooth wire goes to the black. It was driving me crazy.

I purchased a separate "Power Cord Kit" from insinkerator and it came with the clamp connector. This video showed me how to screw in the "Clamp Connector" into the bottom of the garbage disposal. My original electrical cord "pigtail" from the previous garbage disposal has been in existence for more than 25 years. The upgrade to a separate electrical cord had the added benefit of coming with a "clamp connector".

I would like to add a little trick that I saw on a video of another disposal install. When I installed my disposal, I found it tough to tighten the disposal to that final click where the ring would hit the metal stop. I saw a guy use a pair of channel locks to squeeze the ring home into the stop. Take one jaw of locks and place it behind the ring that turns. Then put the other jaw on the backside of the stop and squeeze. It worked like a charm.
Saw that same technique, definitely helpful. Also saw a vid that recommended NOT turning all the way to the "click" -- the stated reason being if you ever need to un-install the disposer, you can use the Allen wrench to loosen and remove it the same way you used the Allen wrench to tighten when installing it. I care most about the new installation not loosening and leaking, so I'm gonna follow How2Plumb's instructions and tighten the disposer all the way to the "click". If I ever have to un-install it, well, I'll cross that bridge when I come to it, there's probably a vid that will show me how to do it... :-)
@@johnholz394 Personally, I would always turn it to the final click. Most disposals have a tremendous amount of vibration. I would think that you would never want that thing to come loose, especially while you are dumping a sink filled with water or your dishwasher is on, cycling its waste water through it.
Done. Did the same -- used large (12") ChannelLocks to get disposer all the way into the final "Click" position. No leaks, everything works great. Delighted.
Excellent video! I just replaced a leaking InSinkErator Badger 1 with an Evolution Compact. I followed your instructions, step by step, and I'm doing a happy dance because I saved a $250 labor charge and have a wonderful, new compactor! The only additional step I took was to buy a Plumber's Third Hand tool to help remove the old compactor and lift and hold the new one in place while I slid the three mounting tabs up the ramps. (I'm a 55-year old woman, so there's no way I could have held the compactor up and aligned the ring.) Anyway, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS WONDERFUL VIDEO!

Thank you so much. I wasn’t installing a new one but my current garbage disposal fell off/down and I had no idea how to set it back up. Your instructions about how to put in a new one in showed me how to reattach it. (I had no idea how to do that.)
Great video...thank you. A very important part is, when tightening the disposal with the special wrench, make sure to tighten until that last "click" (18:03). I had installed a disposal over a year ago and it was fine until it all of a sudden started leaking out of nowhere. I could tell the leak was coming from the top...where the disposal meets the metal ring. Over time, because I hadn't made that final click when tightening the disposal, the vibrations had loosened things up a hair which caused the leak. You definitely mention it in your video, but for some reason I had ignored that part of your instructions. It takes a good amount of force to make that final click, but without it you will develop a leak over time. This was my bad...not yours. Thanks for all you do.
This video helped a lot. We recently purchased a duplex but both of the kitchens had no garbage disposals and we wanted to install them. The only difference is that we hardwired them. Both kitchens had an existing circuit with an outlet and light above the sink so it was just a matter of running a new cable from the electrical box to under the sink, replacing the existing switch with a new double switch, jumping the neutral and ground inside the box to add the new switch and disposal, and wiring the hot from the switch to the disposal because that is what the switch controls.

I would love to see a video on how to permanently remove a garbage disposal. I have tenants throwing things down there that create problems, so I would like to remove it but don't know what to do with the connections to the water pipes and dish washer once the disposal is out. Thanks for your video. My 19-year old Insinkerator 1/2 hp wouldn't spin at normal speed, even after using the unclog tool many times. I bought the same replacement model and your video made it clear that this was a simple job; just a bit more difficult than changing a light bulb. Took me one hour, and saved the cost of a plumber.

Very thorough video. I replaced a garbage disposal that had two installation errors. 3 screws not used and a gasket on the wrong side. Amazing it worked at all. Nice to see an installation done correctly.
Omg! I was watching videos all day (ok not all day but it felt like it) about installing garbage disposals and finally you explained the wiring. Other videos kept saying to match up the colors of the wires together but my pig tail wires were the same color. Thank you for explaining the ribbed wire goes to the white and the smooth wire goes to the black. It was driving me crazy.

I purchased a separate "Power Cord Kit" from insinkerator and it came with the clamp connector.
This video showed me how to screw in the "Clamp Connector" into the bottom of the garbage disposal.
My original electrical cord "pigtail" from the previous garbage disposal has been in existence for more than 25 years.
The upgrade to a separate electrical cord had the added benefit of coming with a "clamp connector".
This video is very helpful. Easy to follow. I am a woman and i can do it by myself after watching this video. Thank you!

I would like to add a little trick that I saw on a video of another disposal install. When I installed my disposal, I found it tough to tighten the disposal to that final click where the ring would hit the metal stop. I saw a guy use a pair of channel locks to squeeze the ring home into the stop. Take one jaw of locks and place it behind the ring that turns. Then put the other jaw on the backside of the stop and squeeze. It worked like a charm.
Saw that same technique, definitely helpful.
Also saw a vid that recommended NOT turning all the way to the "click" -- the stated reason being if you ever need to un-install the disposer, you can use the Allen wrench to loosen and remove it the same way you used the Allen wrench to tighten when installing it. I care most about the new installation not loosening and leaking, so I'm gonna follow How2Plumb's instructions and tighten the disposer all the way to the "click". If I ever have to un-install it, well, I'll cross that bridge when I come to it, there's probably a vid that will show me how to do it... :-)
@@johnholz394 Personally, I would always turn it to the final click. Most disposals have a tremendous amount of vibration. I would think that you would never want that thing to come loose, especially while you are dumping a sink filled with water or your dishwasher is on, cycling its waste water through it.

Done. Did the same -- used large (12") ChannelLocks to get disposer all the way into the final "Click" position. No leaks, everything works great. Delighted.

Excellent video! I just replaced a leaking InSinkErator Badger 1 with an Evolution Compact. I followed your instructions, step by step, and I'm doing a happy dance because I saved a $250 labor charge and have a wonderful, new compactor! The only additional step I took was to buy a Plumber's Third Hand tool to help remove the old compactor and lift and hold the new one in place while I slid the three mounting tabs up the ramps. (I'm a 55-year old woman, so there's no way I could have held the compactor up and aligned the ring.) Anyway, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS WONDERFUL VIDEO!

Great video...thank you. A very important part is, when tightening the disposal with the special wrench, make sure to tighten until that last "click" (18:03). I had installed a disposal over a year ago and it was fine until it all of a sudden started leaking out of nowhere. I could tell the leak was coming from the top...where the disposal meets the metal ring. Over time, because I hadn't made that final click when tightening the disposal, the vibrations had loosened things up a hair which caused the leak. You definitely mention it in your video, but for some reason I had ignored that part of your instructions. It takes a good amount of force to make that final click, but without it you will develop a leak over time. This was my bad...not yours. Thanks for all you do.
This video helped a lot. We recently purchased a duplex but both of the kitchens had no garbage disposals and we wanted to install them. The only difference is that we hardwired them. Both kitchens had an existing circuit with an outlet and light above the sink so it was just a matter of running a new cable from the electrical box to under the sink, replacing the existing switch with a new double switch, jumping the neutral and ground inside the box to add the new switch and disposal, and wiring the hot from the switch to the disposal because that is what the switch controls.
Worked for me I'm not much for reading manuals but this video did the trick. Much appreciated!

I would love to see a video on how to permanently remove a garbage disposal. I have tenants throwing things down there that create problems, so I would like to remove it but don't know what to do with the connections to the water pipes and dish washer once the disposal is out.
