This is by far one of the BEST tutorials on "How To Install A Hot Water Heater" that I've ever seen. Everything was pretty much elementary step-by-step. And to think what some of these plumbing company want to charge to do what he did in less than an hour is absolutely RIDICULOUS! I'm pretty handy and have always thought about replacing my own water heater since it would be a simple removal of the old and install new one with new fittings. I'm definitely going to save this video in my DYI folder for future reference.
My water heater went out on Friday July 5. I called some plumbers for a quote, and most were in the high $800 range. Decided to youtube it. Saw many videos from various sources, but yours was the most simplest, step by step video out there. After watching it twice, I decided to go ahead and take the plunge and replace water heater on my own. I'm not an expert handyperson, but watching your video twice gave me the courage to do it. Thanks a bunch for the simple explanations. You rock!
I consider myself an above average diy homeowner, taking on every project from threading black pipe to lime repointing. But this video educated me. Not so much on what he was talking about, but with how skillfully he did the fundamentals. Tube cutting, torch lighting, wrenching, etc. All were done with brute speed and yet the finesse that comes with years of experience. I can get nearly equal results but it takes me 10 times as long. Much thanks for the education!
Best video I've seen for a newbie like myself. My new BW 40 gal gas WH will be arriving tomorrow. I keep playing your video over and over, as this will be my first install of a WH. Thanks so much for the clear, concise, easy to understand narration and camera work. Local plumbing companies want $1495 to install a new gas WH and take away the old one. I bought a new BW online for $589. You saved me $900 with this video. Thank you, sir!!
Kendon Doris Hi Kendon. The install went great. ONLY because I viewed this video about a dozen times before the wh was delivered. I also made sure to have the plumbing fittings and extras I needed from Lowe's before I started. I took my time with removing the old water heater, then followed the instructions to the letter. It worked out great and the best part was the money I saved by doing this myself. Thank you for asking.
This is the best instructional video on water heater installation I have seen, very concise, detailed down to the materials that are needed, wrapped up in an easy to understand instructions. Good job man!
This is one of the best and most informative video lessons I have ever watch. You should Teach in a Tech/Trade school. Thanks for the Lesson. I am a Senior Citizen and I believe you are never to old to learn. You also helped me save my social security check this month. Thanks again.
Thanks for the video...as I'm not an experienced plumber. I will admit that I bit-off more than I could chew but was successful in the end. This task took me 10 hours to complete (read on). Note: The confined space was located in the garage. And let me tell you; it’s been hot hear in Texas lately. Heck, it’s been so hot…I saw Superman in taxi cab. Anyway, I removed the original faulty water heater according to the video instructions. It was very obvious that every water line connection showed signs for water leakage and the connections seemed delicate/fragile to the touch. Nevertheless, I unpackaged the new water heater and installed all of the nipple fittings and used plenty of Teflon tape and paste for the gas line. I lifted the semi-heavy water heater into this confined space and installed the water heater according to the video instructions. I turned-on both the gas and water supply valves and lit the gas pilot per the manufactures instructions. However, the gas burner failed to light up and water began to leak at the ball valve. The brand new water heater came defective from the factory. I troubleshot as best I could and eventually contacted Whirlpool Technical Support. Unfortunately, the Whirlpool Help Desk technician (desk jockey), gave me a hard time all the way through. He said I needed a volt meter to help him troubleshoot. I told him I would have bought at volt meter at the time of buying the water heater if that was part of the installation process. He then wanted me to fax him the purchase receipt. In the end, he gave me a "Return Merchandise Authorization" number to replace the unit back to Lowes. Well, I reversed everything I had just done and returned the unit back to Lowes (2.5-hour road trip)…and made a pit stop at Chik-Fil-A. I looked like a mess. Fortunately, there was only 1 water heater left in the store. While in the store, I recalled the water supply line ball valve back at the house being leaky at the handle. But, the valve was soldered onto the water supply line. The only way to replace the ball valve was to cut it off at the supply line. So, I decided to buy ¾” “Blue Hawk” push fittings and new compression connection water hoses. I got back to the house and went to cutting the pipe. Immediately, water began to spew everywhere. I nearly "sharted" in the process because I had forgot to shut-off the main water line. I ran out of the garage like a chicken with its head cut-off and found the man-hole cover and water main by the side-walk. I popped man-hole cover open and frogs jumped out at me from every direction…and so did I. These guys were fat and juicy-looking. Again, I nearly “sharted” myself. I shut the water-line off and the water stopped flowing. Whew! I sanded the supply/return lines and installed the push fittings and new water compression connection water hoses. At this time, I became very tired and wired and almost started to laugh…”like what the !@#$ did I get myself into?” So there I am trying to fit this water heater that kept slipping through my sweaty hands and arms. I gave about 5 attempts and kept getting tired and tired. Finally, I slid the water heater in-place (nearly sharting again) and reconnected everything. I turned-on the gas and water supply valves and bled the lines. There weren't any leaks and hot water was regained. SUCCESS!!! By this time, I was wet with sweat from my head down to my butt. I collected all of my tools and drove home. BTW: I secretly took-on this task to surprise my best friend and his wife, who are on vacation. Now you understand why I was a bit terrified throughout the entire process. Next task…the new sink and garbage disposal. Wish me luck!!!
This is some really good information. I go to school for plumbing and am looking at this video for a recap of the information I learned today in class.
Best DIY video I ever watched. After calling a few plumbers that never seem to come by and do the job. I’ll be doing this myself and following these crispy steps. Excellent video man, hopefully it’s as easy as you make it look haha.

Mr. Dan, Thank You for sharing your expertise on installing the water heater. I appreciate the time you gave to make the video and the desire you have to help your fellow man. And while I was willing to replace the s.s. braided hose with freshly sweated three-quarter inch copper, I think you have just saved me a ton of time!...shee-it, and I was going to be so proud to show my sweating-prowess... I know this is an old video, I wanna say thank you!!! I installed a brand new water heater and your video is by far the best info I could find. Thanks for making it!!!
Thanks for such a detailed video. Our tank went out yesterday. I was debating whether I could replace it myself or spend $700 for a professional. You have given me the confidence to give it a shot. Thanks for all of the great tips (checking for leaks, tightness for the connections) along the way. I will update my comment when my install is complete. Well, we ran into some problems during our install where the existing tank shutoff valve was leaking and I didn't know what to do. I kind of panicked. Ended up calling a friend who is a plumber and had him complete the install. He knew exactly what to do. He cut our existing flexi copper lines and replaced them with stainless sharkbite connectors. He got everything up-and-heating in about 45 minutes. I guess that's the difference between a pro and an amateur like me. I am still glad that I at least tried. Thanks again for your video.
Great video, thanks Danny! Here are some suggestions for other small add-on video topics: how to disconnect and remove an old water heater, what to do if the copper supply lines and gas line go directly to the old hot water heater, and any additional steps needed to remove/replace a power vent water heater.
Great Video! Easy to follow instructions. With these instructions not only was I able to install a new water heater for the first time but was able to install the water heater without destroying it also. Thanks for the great instructions.
THank YOU!! your video is by far the BEST I have seen on Water Heater Installation!!! The Plumber here is so GOOD at explaining EVERYTHING that it's a true Gift to watch this..
Good job! You explained every step along the way and, more importantly, why you did what you did along the way. If you ever see a need to revise this "Install Presentation", you might start off by mentioning that before the old water heater can legaly be removed, some local municipalities require a "PERMIT" be "pulled" by either the Homeowner or his Plumber; and that there may be an inspection upon completion by the City that should catch any unsafe practices or installations. And finally, you might finish up by quickly summing up all of those steps by reviewing what you did. You know, the old Tell them what you are going to teach them (show them), Show them what to do", and finally, "review what you taught them"
10/10 video, thank you so much brother! You saved me a ton of money and was only slightly frustrated because my old water heater was so old and different.
ATTENTION: The copper supply line he is using is awesome because he doesn't need a Dielectric Union. This tubing is built with a dielectric union, which properly separates the two metals. If copper and galvanize metals were to come into contact, an oxidation would occur which will ruin the rough plumbing near it and can shorten the life span of the water heater tank. The oxidation doesn't happen fast, it takes a couple years before you begin to see or notice the effects.
Thanks Danny. God bless you man. If I could give you more than 1 thumb I would. This really helped me a lot. I have straight pipes running on the old water heater that has gone bad after 20 years. I was worried about what to do, it looked like a lot of cutting and adjusting of rigid straight copper pipes and brass gas line was in order. But you solved that concern for me, now I know, I can go with flex pipes for both gas and water lines. Thanks again.
Hey Daniel, the reason why you do not use compound on the flex connectors, is because they have rubber washers that act as the seal. This goes for anything that has washers or gaskets. Thanks for the question.
Great video, I am replacing my water heater in my other home this weekend. Got all I need to know from this video, Thank you. To the point and professional.
Thank you , it is very professional installation and explanation . My 75 gallon hot water heater installed more than 11 years ago . Still working good , but I will not bring a plumber to rep me off . I will do it by myself the same way you you show . It is simple and easy . Thank you very much .
I purchased a 50 gallon Rheem water heater and they now come with 2 screws to attach the vent hood. They place them in the plastic envelope that hangs on the water heater with the installation manual. Love the loop trick. Still a great vid in 2018.
Really good instruction. I do handyman work. I dont need to see another video. How2plumb is detailed and your camera person deserves a shout out for quality also.
Pretty simple...how much for the labor on this type of job...? Not equipment because homeowner buys that...just the labor for this job...you are a really good teacher...
How to install a water heater, by a pro! Thank you. I'm a DIY guy and started to install one for my parents, who got impatient and hired a plumber. I confirmed their state license info, but I KNOW I'd have done a better job. After watching your video, I'd do it even better. There is an unfortunate trend out there now (mainly due to codes and fears) to hire 'professionals', but you no longer 'get what you pay for.' There are now hacks who charge the same as top people, yet do substandard work. it's so disappointing, so I DIY. But then I get ridiculed or questioned, but I do it right.
REALLY appreciate this video - especially the part where you missed the stud. Realistic and practical, like how life happens. Thank you for this one. I gave it a thumbs up and will use it when I install my water heater next week!
Excellent job, did exactly what you showed. Purchased the same water heater. First time install went perfect thanks to you! Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
You're good. I'm not brave enough to try this myself. I feel uneasy about working with anything that involves gas or electricity. I'm going to try to find someone to install a hot water tank at a reasonable price.
Strange homeowner didn't want a drain pan under it..., especially since they also didn't have a Thermal Expansion Tank installed. Great step-by-step video and the tips throughout, thanks!
You are so detailed.. Thank you so much for putting this video together, now off to the garage with my laptop to install my water heater.. Again, thank you
Excellent how-to video. I almost think I can do it myself but will probably let my amazing plumber do it. I have to move my existing water heater to access the wall behind it (has a big hole that rodents are accessing.) The current copper pipes don't allow for any movement at all even though there is some slack in the gas line.
Thanks for the video. I had a gas hot water heater - switched over to tankless electric - now back to a gas hot water heater. The tankless electric is nice in theory - but the reality has been a nightmare!! Hopefully this transition will be smooth!!
Nicely done! I learned a few things. I do note that in some states, a permit is required for installation. Obviously you are in California with those eq. straps. not required here in Texas.
Excellent video. I'm just starting to do some home projects -diy style. It's not as difficult as I'd imagined and with informative instruction like this , I have the confidence to forge ahead.
Excellent demonstration. This is a confidence inspiring video. Learned so much about heater installation. Really appreciate for putting this video out. I feel like I can try myself now. But I know it won't go as smoothly as you showed.
i"m really thankful for the effort that you have made to benefit people like me who are still learning.god bless your heart.love this job and still want to know more about it.thanks
thanks for the video, I will attempt to install my new Rheem 40 gal gas water heater ($389 home depot). looks like there are plastic nipples covering the water inlet and outlet of the tank. do these plastic covers need to be removed before connecting the water supply line and the hot water outlet line? in the video when you are connecting the cold water supply line(@ minute 11:14) is that a white nipple(cover) on the tank inlet pipe I see?
Fist time I have seen an demonstration of what a leaky pipe looks like during the soap test!

THank YOU!! your video is by far the BEST I have seen on Water Heater Installation!!! The Plumber here is so GOOD at explaining EVERYTHING that it's a true Gift to watch this..
Thanks 🙏
You know, the old Tell them what you are going to teach them (show them), Show them what to do", and finally, "review what you taught them"
Great video ever on water heater installation
10/10 video, thank you so much brother! You saved me a ton of money and was only slightly frustrated because my old water heater was so old and different.
Wow, thanks partner. I thought replacing my heater was way out of my league. But your video showed me that I can do it.
Your instructions how to install water heater is very clear and anybody with little mechanical skill can do it. Thank you for posting your video clip
Finally, a guy that knows what the heck he's talking about! Thanks Dan!

Great video. Just the right amount of talking and the video quality is excellent and instructions were right on.

That was very well done. That was too easy to understand. You could not have been more clear. Great job!
Este es el. Video más detallado q he visto thank amigo
Thank you , it is very professional installation and explanation . My 75 gallon hot water heater installed more than 11 years ago . Still working good , but I will not bring a plumber to rep me off . I will do it by myself the same way you you show . It is simple and easy . Thank you very much .
Outstanding video, Danny. Clear, concise, very helpful, thank you. The part on the teflon tape
is a boon.
This was a very easy video to follow. very informational and thourough and straight to the point.
Very nice. I actually paid $150 for a water heater installation about three years ago. Thank you very much for charring your knowledge.
I purchased a 50 gallon Rheem water heater and they now come with 2 screws to attach the vent hood. They place them in the plastic envelope that hangs on the water heater with the installation manual. Love the loop trick. Still a great vid in 2018.
Thank you! We are about to install our first water heater and the model in this vid is the exact one we are using. Thank you!! Very clear directions.
man, u are so easy to understand and follow. The editing is great. Thanks a mil, young blood.
Excellent video!!. Best WH install on UA-cam. Thanks
Could you please do a video on all the power tools and hands tools that are used daily. Always great to know their names and purposes.
One of the best videos I’ve seen on this topic. Very helpful very informational. Great job
Thanks for the awesome video! I just replaced my water heater after watching your video in under an hour! Hardest part is the weight of the tank.
Great video! You effectively explain step by step how to install a water heater. Great Job!
Awesome demonstration! Thank you. Extremely thorough and professional. And that's coming from a school teacher! :)
Great demo! Based on this I would feel confident doing an install myself.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
like the way you expln in great detail on how to.
will give it a try and let you know how it turned out.
You're good. I'm not brave enough to try this myself. I feel uneasy about working with anything that involves gas or electricity. I'm going to try to find someone to install a hot water tank at a reasonable price.
Best video on the subject that I've found so far - thank you!
Strange homeowner didn't want a drain pan under it..., especially since they also didn't have a Thermal Expansion Tank installed. Great step-by-step video and the tips throughout, thanks!
Thank you for this straight forward video. It helped me to install my own water heater today.
Thank you for such a well put together video. Your instructions are clear and easy to follow.
i love watching these kind of videos, today i fixed my own water heater thanks to youtube video makers.
You saved me. Thank You!
You are so detailed.. Thank you so much for putting this video together, now off to the garage with my laptop to install my water heater.. Again, thank you
My man you did an awesome job couldn’t be any better I think I can install my own water heater now thank you
Great video! One of the most helpful ones for water heater installment!
Excellent how-to video. I almost think I can do it myself but will probably let my amazing plumber do it. I have to move my existing water heater to access the wall behind it (has a big hole that rodents are accessing.) The current copper pipes don't allow for any movement at all even though there is some slack in the gas line.
awesome video, clear to the point. Really nice. One of the best step by step I have seen. Thanks a lot.
Danny what a wonderful way of explaining , thank you very much
Thanks for the video.
Just the right amount of details, my installation went smoothly thanks to your video. Well done, thank you!
i"m really thankful for the effort that you have made to benefit people like me who are still learning.god bless your heart.love this job and still want to know more about it.thanks
I'd like your video & I learned a lot from yours. I have one question: why you don't have a gas sediment trap in your installation.
So far the best video I've found. Thanks.
Thanks for the support!
Great step by step video. You make it look effortless. I will perfect my skills with this video. Thanks again.
Thanks for being so thorough on the gas line hook up and testing for leaks. Many other videos just say, hook up the gas.
thanks for the video, I will attempt to install my new Rheem 40 gal gas water heater ($389 home depot). looks like there are plastic nipples covering the water inlet and outlet of the tank. do these plastic covers need to be removed before connecting the water supply line and the hot water outlet line? in the video when you are connecting the cold water supply line(@ minute 11:14) is that a white nipple(cover) on the tank inlet pipe I see?
