This is the best video about this vw sensor issue, thank you very much for taking the time to demonstrate all this for us. My VW scirocco will be acting all good before the end of this weekend.
Hi, My golf had the same issue, spent $60 at mechanic diagnosing, after your video I went to the dealership bought these sensors replaced the car is quiet 😊 - no funny lights.
Fantastic video! Having the same issues, seems to be a thing with Jetta’s no matter what model and makes me feel much better knowing it I can try these easy fixes myself!
@@VHickleGarage what program and scanner are you using I need me one of those I don't wanna go to the stealer ship they might charge me $2,000+ USA money just for a simple fix anything can help God bless happy 4th of July 🎉🙏
@@heyyaitsd1168 I use VCDS, and a HEX-V2 from www.ross-tech.com/. If you own a VAG car it's essential equipment. Pays for itself if it saves you one trip to the dealer.
That gear shifting issue you described at the end of the video sounds like the vehicle is going into limp mode, which is intended since the car can't read wheel speed due to the faulty sensor.
Almost 80% of VW/AUDI owners have this issue for soon or later ! So it’s including me for twice, one has happened on my 20 years old Audi but solved after cleaning up yeah run fine till now on , and now it has happened to my newest audi week ago and I’m going to clean up the ABS sensor first next weekend because after cleared up all codes it’s still come on again after driving and limping too ! This new indirect TPMS system I must hate it so … and I believe the culprit is ABS sensor itself !
my god! what a treat to see suspension parts not covered in rust! Never ever see a car up here in Iowa look like that. They are completely enamored by road salt!
I have this problem with a Volkswagen Passat 2016 TSI... I might have to spray and clean them down 😞... Don't know why Volkswagen has this problem on every car? ...is it recalled? I don't wanna take it to the shop they will charge me an ARM AND LEG... I changed them and it off then I went on the highway and it came back on.
Great tip. At the time I did this one I did not have a set of ramps. I just replaced one of the front sensors, and could have even done it on the ground had the sensor not been stuck. Ended up taking the wheel off so I could see what I was prying on.
Thx buddy...this is exactly what my '12 JSW TDI did. It even turned my cruise control off, while on a long haul, and disabled the traction control button. This will be my weekend project.
Thank you so much for your thorough investigation on your Volkswagen vehicle, You are the best keep up with these great videos, you save me a "hell-of-a-lot"! of money!
Thanks. Always annoying when the whole cluster lights up like a Christmas tree. Good Luck. I've got another one starting to act up myself, that I need to swap out.
@@VHickleGarage I changed it out today with a brand new one but the light came back on after a short trip round the block, there is scoring on the old ssensor so I think it may be the reluctor ring its going into the garage on monday
Thank you. I would like to add that in order to help with removing the connector, you can you use a little flat head and pry it out little by little. Thank you again!
What software are you using to read your Error codes? The Wheel sensor are Hall Effect sensors and work off of induction produced from the steel tone ring rotating. Dirt(road grime) on the outside of the sensor should not have any practical effect. A damaged tone ring is something that people should visually check right a way. Excessive Rust can cause them to fall apart. As long as there are no metal particles shorting out to ground, it should work. That would be a lot of metal particles.
I'm using VCDS along with the appropriate VAG-COM from Ross Tech. You're right on cleaning. . . It didn't accomplish anything. Someone on one of the forums had suggested it, so I figured it was worth a try before buying a new sensor. There was a lot of crud on the old sensor, either way it was worth cleaning it all up before installing the new sensor.
Very helpful thank you. I just bought a 2012 Touareg and while driving it home on motorway 🛣, had the ABS, Traction and electronic parking brake warning lights come on. Had a mechanic scan the codes and it came back with faulty rear left speed sensor. Getting it fixed today, but it's good to see how easy it is to replace and maybe worth keeping the old one and cleaning it up as a possible spare. It's seems like a common failure on the Touaregs so being able to swap out almost like a light blub is very useful to know. Also i think I might invest in a scanner, it now seems like a no brainer with modern cars being soooo electronic, I imagine it will save be money after 1 or 2 problems. Going to the dealer for a scan costs about £90. Thanks for making the video and greetings from Cornwall UK 👍🏻.
I would say if you're worried about them you could just order spares to keep on hand. I haven't really had much luck reviving an old one once it starts acting up. I have had decent luck with the cheaper aftermarket sensors though. I would highly recommend getting the VAG-Com and VCDS from Ross-Tech. Being able to easily read codes and interact with the vw specific modules is essential if you're going to do any work yourself.
Like you, I do not like Christmas lights on my dashboard. Until I watched the video, I was afraid to drive it for fear of damaging...everything. The video gave me peace of mind to drive the car to the dealer for a warranty repair. TmThanks for the gumball Popeye!
@@VHickleGarage Just a dead battery. $180 at the dealer, $60 install, $150 to reset the codes. $415 out the door. I know it is too much to spend, but a guy has to know his limitations!
@@troysheldon5539 Ouch. . If you're even the slightest bit computer savvy it might be worth investing the $200 in a Vag-Com. It's not difficult to use the basic functions, and pays for itself if it saves you one trip to the dealer.
@@troysheldon5539 pretty harsh charging $150 to reset codes. They literally just have to push a button on The scanner. Maybe you should have spent that $150 and just bought a scanner for yourself. I got a blue driver for a hundred bucks that'll reset codes
Everything in this video was correct . Strangely it was also my right rear ABS sensor that was faulty but I am driving on the left in the UK . Also had issues with transmission as discussed and automatic gear shift .
Yes, all of the symptoms you described in this video are exactly what I'm having related to the bad wheel speed sensor. This is the second time I've had one go bad on my 2016 GTI and the symptoms are exactly the same as the first time, exactly the same as this video. Thank you for sharing.
I was over to friends house and I hooked up his code reader. It didn’t pull any codes, but I’ve had the same warning lights on the instrument cluster intermittently. I do have the Ross Tech VCDS cable. However, I didn’t use it yet. Do I have to use the Ross Tech cable to see which wheel sensor is causing the problem?
You should be able to see something with any OBD2 scanner. That being said, I would try the VagCom and see if you get anything different. I'd be very surprised if there wasn't a single code with all those warning lights on. It's more likely there is a module communication problem and that's why you didn't see any codes, but try VCDS before you go chasing anything else.
Please use wooden/rubber blocks between Jackson and stands.. otherwise you remove pant and dent bodywork. Also..you can test your old sensors with an ohmeter to see if they are shot.
Have the exact same issue in my 2016 Tiguan. Full Xmas tree at start and the lights go away if I turn off the ignition and start it again. My VCDS cable is currently 5000 miles away as I’m in the middle of a move so I’ll have to get that shipped here asap. Thanks!
As long as you're not experiencing any other issues you can probably get by like that for a while. I drove around like that for at least a month or two before I got it fixed
Had this happen to me today, I just had my tires changed and rotated 3 days prior to the Christmas tree so the mechanic probably got the sensor dirty or it just broke (49,000ish miles), I don't have any software to clear codes so its time to take it back to the shop.
From what I understand, it's a pretty common issue, so probably nothing the tire shop did. If you clean/replace the sensor the lights should go away without clearing the codes. If you're planning to keep the car a long time I would suggest investing in a VAG COM. One saved trip to the shop and it will pay for itself.
Have same issue, had a hard conract with curbs and now sensor seems faulty. Gonna replace it too, we'll see. Plus information: since external sensor causes the problem, the error belongs to "reversible" category. This means that if sensor recovers and starts operating well (maybe then was a contact issue only, common in any VW model), then lights will go out always, no need to clear codes if fix was done right.
I have the same issue with my 2009 Jetta. All the dash lights are ON... . I bought a used ABS pump and controller.... it was money wasted. I recently ordered all 4 abs sensors that I haven't received yet. I will post my end result once they're installed.
If you plan to keep the car and work on it, I highly recommend investing in a VAG-COM. Good chance you only need 1 sensor, not all 4.. You'll save a lot more $$ in the long run buy scanning first, then ordering parts.
@@jikert4815 In my case yes the wheel sensor seems to have cured the shifting issues. I didnt have any other codes though. .if your car is throwing codes for a trans sensor, then you may need that one replaced as well.
@@VHickleGarage It's not throwing codes for anything at all. I just know one of the wheel sensors is going bad, but it doesn't say which like it did for you (probably the software I'm using) but the shifting is horrible. I was just curious if it also fixed your shifting. I will probably replace both kinds of sensors and see what happens
just quoted a $600 repair from St*kes VW in North Charleston S.C. for my 2018 Passat... had it repaired at Firestone Auto Repair for $300. I have been a VW customer for YEARS (5 different VW's, 6 if you count the Karhman Ghia i had in high school). The wheel speed sensors are clearly a poor design. If VW can't, or won't, address this issue I have been subjected to 4 different times, - then I think it's time to say goodbye to VW. There are MANY other auto brands out there to choose from.
@@canucknanuckofthenorth3457 I thought anything tech or mechanical related, we had to use the VW dealership. My brother in law told me after I got it fixed, that the censor itself only costs $25 ! I wish he hadn’t told me that. 😞
Thanks for the video. I have been facing a similar issue with my 2011 Passat. The lights on the dashboard only come up when in a long drive +200 miles, then, if the car is stopped for a while, when restarted the error is usually cleaned from the dashboard. I'm not sure what is the root of the issue in my case.
Same issue with vw cc 2012 The problem is that when i stop for a little while the error cleaned and the diagnostic scanner can not see any errors. Don’t know if i have to scan it when the lights showing for the scanner to catch it! But i can’t expect when it might happen again, to prepare to carry it by the mechanic...
Hey! So I’ve just done that on my mk6 golf and the codes came back on. I have no idea what it could be. My fuses are okay and the sensors new. I’m just lost now 😂
Have you scanned since you replaced the sensors? Cleared codes? I'm guessing you're throwing other codes if it came back. Either that or wiring is damaged. . .in which case you should still be showing a code for a bad sensor.
So this ended up being the problem on my 2016 VW Jetta S. Another side effect was the car wouldn't go beyond 30 mph no matter what. As soon as I replaced sensor and cleared all the faults the car drove perfectly and all the dash lights are gone...
Thank You! ross-tech.com/ They offer the software for free but you do have to buy the cable. It's a little pricey, but well worth the investment if you're going to keep the vehicle for a while. One saved trip to the shop and it pays for itself..
I had the exact same warning lights on my audi A3 and Audi told me it was front wheel abs sensor. I replaced it even though it was very clean and still had the lights. Figured out another abs sensor on the rear also needed replaced that and now all warnings are gone.
I'm not actually sure cleanliness matters much since cleaning didn't have much of an impact for me. That's why the scans are so important, that way you know if more than one sensor is acting up. Weird that the dealer would have missed that though. Glad you were able to get them all off. Very annoying to have the whole dash lit up.
I had took my Jetta to a shop, to change 2 front struts, and 2 front ball joints I got my car back and it has all of these lights. Also my speedometer isn’t working with the lights on is this what yours did? They charged me 1700 just for those items. I have 0 lights on and now my engine light is on too.
I believe the Speedo not working could be bad Wheel Speed Sensors, but I'm not 100% sure. With the work you had done it would seem likely that they either left a sensor unplugged, or damaged one. I would expect you to have warning lights like what I had though. You should take it back to the shop and have them scan it and fix whatever they broke.
We used a VAGCOM and it threw codes for back right sensor. We replaced the sensor, and reset all codes. Drove and all codes popped back up. Used a multimeter and the sensor is reading 0. Any ideas?
@@VHickleGarage it's throwing codes for electrical faults on the other abs sensors now as well. There are other codes as well for the random lights that have went off, all are the exact ones shown in your video!
@@amberm.6074 It sounds like you may have some bigger issues going on. I would start out by checking your main ground, but if all the sensors are showing problems then it could be the ABS module.
Amazon, I didn't feel like shelling out the $$ for VW genuine parts. There is a link in the description. 3 years later and the cheap sensor is still working.
The battery and steering wheel lights are common with low voltage and/or battery replacement. Have you replaced your battery recently, or is it old? Low battery voltage can also cause a no start situation where the engine does still crank. Battery, and the connections would be first thing I would check. After that you really need to scan the computer to see what codes are stored.
I had to install a new fuse box (the one over the battery)(2004 Jetta). Upon completion of the installation, the ABS and Brake lights came on. Assuming the brakes/peripherals didn't suddenly go bad in my garage, could I have accidentally triggered this code, and need to erase it?
So I’m currently going through the same thing with my 2015 vw Jetta I ordered my new censors and they’ll be here Tuesday but I don’t have a way of clearly out the lights like you did with the computer
You might get lucky and have the lights clear themselves after you replace the sensor. If not you may be able to take it to an auto parts store and have them clear the codes. I'm not sure if their generic OBD II scanner will clear them or not.
my passat has this right now, my brake pedal is going nuts when i firmly press it, my gearbox is shifting like a madman, i will take my car to a garage tomorrow, i just replaced my 2 back wheel bearings. hopefully a new sensor will fix it.
If the pedal is acting weird you may have bigger issues. Hopefully it just turn out to be the sensors. If it all just started happening since you did the wheel bearings then good chance at least one of them got damaged in the process.
@@VHickleGarage Yes i did but the scan doesnt say that the sensor is defected but it detects that i have a flat tire. i checked and the tire is fine and hold air for weeks.
@@LarsSchretlen Have you tried resetting your TPMS? Doubt that will fix it, but worth a shot. IDK about the polo, but my reset button is in the glove box.
Thanks, very useful info, From the last week I have multiple errors from Being starting the engine with loud long single alarm ,than ESB, ABS lights stay on, shows Auto Hold is not working, than saying The tires monitoring pressure is out, the Cruse control is out.. than after a while all errors gone by itself , everything back to normal until a few hours later or the next days.. i have no idea what was wrong just thinking all those errors come from single point which may only one sensor..vw golf bluemotion
All of those warning lights, and it being an intermittent issue definitely sounds like my experiences with an ABS sensor that's on its way out. I've got another one like that right now, and the lights just recently came on and have stayed on, so I've got another one to replace.
2013 VW CC sport, After battery died and replaced battery almost every single lite lit up. Airbag, ABS, Traction, Steering, check engine and AFS. To this day can not find problem, replaced left wheel sensors and lights went off. (code reader said left was bad). Then lights came back on now code reader says Right wheel sensors are bad, still have to change them. Another issue to note is sometimes car would start then stop, it would not run, I would have to disconnect negative terminal on battery, reconnect and then it would start. If I replace right sensors and problem persists it is a toss up of either a short in wiring somewhere or problem with computer or one of the CAN modules. Funny how one thing can make the entire car go wonky, it is a royal pain in the butt. But this is not the only thing in repair; one is headliner redo, repaired broken wire connector up front, replaced all brake pads, MAF sensor, wastegate valve, replaced grille with emblem (because somebody smacked it) and now radiator support shroud. Because I drove front over a concrete car stop which ripped bottom section of plastic shroud. Joy Joy happy joy, Not! I sure hope when I replace those wheel sensors it will solve most of my problems and hoping that I don't have turbo issues and figure out what's going on with AFS after replacing bulbs. I am happy I came across this video because it lets me know I am not the only one with these crazy issues and gives me hope. At the very least it points me in a direction and gives me clues, even though this video is two years old, many thanks.
It's common to have codes and some lights when changing a battery, but most of those should go away pretty quickly. Hopefully the speed sensors will take care of a lot of your lights. It sounds like you definitely have an electrical gremlin somewhere. Between the Sportwagen and my A4 I have had my share of them as well. I would start by getting a VAG specifc scan. The VAG-COM will tell you a little more than a normal OBD2 scanner. I would also check your main battery ground, and then closely inspect wiring anywhere you had other damage. Good Luck!
Great video , I have a 2012 CC with numerous problems. I have all of those dash lights on and shifting problems. This is first time I have heard that those sensors may cause shifting issues and I have been to a VW dealer as well.
I believe I read that they can be part of the shifting issue. I have had the shifting issue happen randomly a couple times since I replaced the sensor, but it's much more rare than it was before.
@@VHickleGarage what other issues can that sensor cause. I'm looking at a 2013 cc to buy and says it has a bad abs sensor but it is braking really weird and shifting in high rpm sometimes.
@@ryanloughlin6380 The sensor can definitely cause some shifting issues, but no guarantee that's the only thing. For the brakes I would think the sensor could cause issues with them as a result of ESC, but I don't know for sure.
2nd time Im going through this with Tiguan. Problem is my code readers, both, say No fault codes, repalced both rear speed sensors with cheap ones and then Bosch brand , still same , brought to dealer to check. Its possible Hubs are an issue , but not sure, lol
Lol pretty sure that was unrelated. I have a random issue with that one that I've never figured out, but it's pretty rare so it hasn't bothered me much.
Hello my friend thank you for the great video but I have a question. When you got all the lights on (ABS / stabilizer, air bag, traction control) did the car was driving normal or the acceleration did not pass more than 30mph ? All the lights came on my car and I cannot even drive more than 30mph thanks
I did not have that particular issue, but several other people have said they did. Once you identify the faulty sensor, replacing it should fix all those problems.
I have a similar issue with my Jetta I replaced the sensors but still having the issues with the lights staying on. This helped a lot with changing out the parts. But, I am still seeing the lights as well as the speedometer and odometer are not functioning. I was told by the dealership it was only my sensors that were the problem. Any ideas? Thanks in advance for any advice.
Hey !! can you give an update on the downshifting ?? had the same issue with the wheel speed sensors on my polo 6C, Replaced the sensors and have no error codes but that random downshift happens on bad roads, especially from 2nd to 1st gear. is it just how DSG behaves while moving slowly on bad roads?? !!!
I have had the issue pop up randomly a couple of times since doing the sensor. I haven't been able to pinpoint any other specific thing that is causing it. Definitely not something that is normal operation for the DSG. I would suggest checking the wiring for your sensors, but I would expect that to throw a code. Unfortunately, I haven't dug any deeper into the issue since mine hasn't been acting up.
It should. If not check the wiring. If it's not that, then it's probably the ABS module, which is going to be a bigger and more expensive repair. WIth as common as this is, it's probably just the sensor. Good Luck!
Each corner of the car has a sensor, and each sensor is specific to that location. You'll need to scan it to figure out which sensor. Alternatively you can just buy all 4 and change them out, but there's always a small chance that it's not a sensor. Scanning is always the best 1st step.
I drive a 2012 GTI & I’m having all the same lights come on my dash but I’m not experiencing any gear hunting issues & no traction or braking issues as far as I can tell. I’m hoping it’s just a broken sensor or wire rip near the sensor, or I might just need new rotors and pads.
Best to scan to see what all codes you're getting. It's probably a bad sensor that just isn't giving you the other issues. Brakes may, or may not be related to VSS issues.
My Jetta is doing this after I got it back from the shop I have all of these lights. Also my speedometer stopped working with the lights on. Smh. Did your speedometer stop working also?
I doubt that would really protect it. They are designed to work with the dirt and debris. As I showed cleaning mine didn't really fix it. Unfortunately, these sensors are a wear item that will occasionally need replaced. In 2.5 years I've only had the one go bad, although I do have another one starting to act up.
@@aaronjaggan I know they do frequently go bad, but every year seems excessive. . .unless you're driving in really harsh environments. In 2.5 years with the sportwagen I've had 1 go bad. A couple months ago another one started acting up but then stopped before I replaced it. I've never had any abs issues on my Audi, but idk if they're the exact same system.
@@VHickleGarage Thanks for the reply. I do drive in harsh environments ( where I live unfortunately , constant flooding , mud, dusty environment) and I always wonder why my family japanese cars don't give errors like that since they live there where the conditions are.
I have an update for you. I got diagnosed this time around for a faulty abs module. You think if I replaced it ..would it solve the problem that I am having frequently of replacing those abs sensors?
Do you have any other beeping, or warnings showing on the dash display? Was it scanned using a VW specific scanner? It's either an ABS sensor, the ABS module, or if you're getting other warnings about brakes and "driver assistance button defective" then you've probably got the issue I'm dealing with presently. Leaky sunroof drains getting water into the fuse box, cluster, and can bus module area. I haven't fully diagnosed, or fixed mine yet, but it's pointing towards the can bus module being bad, or corroded from water.
yes, your PC.... to find a different brand of automobile to purchase. after owning 5 VW's i think it's time to switch brands. if VW can't design a more reliable wheel speed sensor, will you trust them with the safety of your family?
really helpful, thank you for this video so much my car was doing this and i took it to a mechanic and he said that it needs a lot of stuff which really scared me but after seeing this video i did it myself and everything is working great now thank you!
It's still most likely your speed sensor. Many others have reported speedo issues when their sensor was bad. Replace the bad sensor and all of those problems should go away. As always it's best to start with scanning for codes to see which sensor is bad and whether or not any other codes are showing up.
I just had all these light popped up on my dash like Christmas lights! Did it also clear your "tire sensor?" Looks like it cleared too. Awesome video! Thanks!
Yes the speed sensor fixed my TPMS light. I know it's not true for all Vw's, but the sportwagen doesn't actually have TPMS sensors, it determines whether or not there's an issue based on the speed sensor input. At least I believe that's what I read when I first looked into it.
Proud (and brave) owner of Scirocco 1.4 tsi petrol engine here... Hello! My testimony after this thorough and simple video (which I gratefully thank you for putting out!): - sensor replaced: lights still on; - magnetic ring wheel bearing replaced (it was needed and to further troubleshoot): lights still on. Since live data showed that rear left wheel sensor was soundingly collecting data and no diagnosis errors report other than right wheel: - Still need to check cables from rear left wheel up to abs control unit and if anomaly isn't from there, need to check fuses, voltage/power/etc from that end. ...this is an exhaustive process since I'm not a mechanic and these darn lights started their Christmas by themselves after 1 year of routine driving with no issue whatsoever... Hope still is intact but the headache factor of these little nothings that are of considerable number in VW systems and cars is starting to be very very annoying.
Very frustrating, I guess I got off easy with it only being the sensor. I'm a little confused though. . .If you're not getting any errors on the left side why check the wiring for that side? You did install the correct replacement sensor for location correct? . . .i.e. you didn't put a right front sensor on the right rear, etc? I've hear of the abs module itself going bad, but I have fortunately not had to deal with that issue.
@@VHickleGarage maybe I fumbled my words. The error exists and reports the rear right wheel only. The driving data reports all three other sensors registering speed minus the rear right wheel. Hence the needed wiring inspection and (hopefully not for now) the ABS module revision. To answer your questions straight up: nope. The sensor is correctly installed. Thank you for taking time to reply!
Can you please help i have a 2004 Volkswagen Jetta 2.0 automatic transmission the car is not shifting at all the code is p0715 i bought these speed sensor i dont know where there located. If you watch the video you should be able to see where the sensors are located. It's on the back side of the wheel, and is just held in by one bolt. I'm not 100% sure if the 2004 has the same design, but it should at least be similar. You also have a different transmission than the DSG in my car, so again I'm not sure if what I did in the video is applicable to you, but if the scan says a sensor is bad I would replace it and start there.

I don't remember now which brand it was that I used. If the OE part is cheap enough it's probably best to go with that. If not then you could take a chance with a cheap aftermarket (off brand) part. This one on Amazon has pretty good ratings: amzn.to/3cAXEH9
@@VHickleGarage thank you so much brother I order this ABS sensor and my mechanic put it in my car and so far they run great thank you once again have a great day
This same thing happened to me after I changed the setting for “Starting Vibration Reduction” while the ABS module was hot. Now getting a message that it has lost it’s coding, or improperly coded. Going to need to take my car in to have them generate the long coding to recode it I guess. I didn’t have a saved code before errors.
I haven't messed too much with the coding features, but I remember reading that you can cause some issues if its not done properly. Have you tried the Ross Tech site for help? I know they have a lot of info posted there.
I’ve tried googling it, but turns out it uses LONG coding, 2017 GTI MK7. I was using OBD11 Pro, under brakes and Adaptation, then starting vibration reduction from OFF -> NORMAL - doesn’t really change that much. I think it glitched and thought I had more features than I have. I took it to a shop and they found it was coded for extra features, like front end collision and lane keep assist. This caused the ABS module to clear out code and go offline. It took the shop about 2 hours to code correctly and redo all the adaptations by driving and setting steering wheel position sensor. Car runs great now, NO 6 lights with of them 4 flashing.
I currently have the same issue with my Passat tdi. The thing is, the dealership part costs $190 and the AutoZone one is $32. Some repair shop owner said I might "fry my computer" if I went aftermarket. I don't believe him because the AZ part is specified. Then again, I only gamble when I know I'll win. Hmm.
Aftermarket sensors can be a gamble, but I think it's pretty unlikely to fry the computer. I have replaced 2 of my sensors with aftermarket and have not had a problem. Ordered online for even less than AZ.
I have a 2009 mk5 gti and it’s throwing the abs, traction and brake light on. I’m not able to read codes idk y but it also goes into 1st when the beaps start ( rethrowing the codes) I’m also cruising and I have to go to nuteral quickly so it doesn’t blow. Any ideas?
It certainly sounds like you also have a bad wheel speed sensor. Unfortunately without being able to pull codes it's just a shot in the dark. The only option would be to just replace all 4, and there's no guarantee that will fix it. I would suggest trying to find someone to scan it for you, or purchasing a VAG-COM from Ross Tech.
The Speed Sensor, TPS, and ABS module are all different things. If you're getting the code for the wheel speed sensor then I would start with replacing that first. If you only code is the ABS module then that is most likely your problem.
www.ross-tech.com/ . . . It's a VAG-COM, much more than just a basic OBD II scanner. If you have an VW/Audi car that you plan to work on, and keep for a long time it's well worth the price to buy.
I believe it's because under a certain speed the air bags shouldn't deploy in an accident, and with the bad sensor the computer may not be sure of the vehicle speed. I'm not 100% sure of that though.
The bolt broke, or the sensor broke? If it's just the sensor it should be pretty easy to drill out since it's mostly plastic. Alternatively, you could use a torch to heat it up and probably get it out that way. If it's the bolt, you're going to need an extractor (never works for me), or you'll have to carefully drill it out and then chase the threads, or re-tap it. Worst case would be drilling it out too far, in which case a helicoil kit would probably be your only solution.
I have not experienced any issues with that because of the speed sensor. I don't think I've heard anyone else report that either. Not a stretch since this is the ABS system, but that might be indicative of a different problem. Have you scanned the computer to see which codes are showing?
I can't say for sure. Sounds like you might have other issues. I don't think a speed sensor failure would cause it to stall in 3rd. Have you scanned? Any other codes? If not that would be the first thing to check.

@@Alexis-mk6 Ouch. A lot of different issues there. I'm assuming then that the rotor issues is why you were getting these lights. You can get a can of MAF cleaner at any auto parts store. You can try to remove it and clean it before buying a new one, they often just get a little dirty . . .Just make sure to let dry off before plugging it back in.
Just had this happen to me trying to change the rear caliper, had to use a tube for extra leverage since those 12 point bolt were rusted to hell and back, ended up busting the abs connector and now I’m dreading to fix it
The sensor is very easy swap. 1.5/10 for Difficulty. Changing a caliper is certainly more involved. If anything is rusty or stuck make sure to spray with PB Blaster and let it sit overnight.
You can't clear all the codes without a scanner, but if you replace the sensor then the lights might go away on their own after driving it for a whiel.

That gear shifting issue you described at the end of the video sounds like the vehicle is going into limp mode, which is intended since the car can't read wheel speed due to the faulty sensor.
I have this problem now , my car is in limp mode. All my lights on my dash board

Almost 80% of VW/AUDI owners have this issue for soon or later !

Just a quick tip, if you have a set of drive up ramps you can do this without taking the wheel off quite easily

That's a great idea!
GREAT VIDEO! This is really good guide to me. thanks.

my car wont shift into 3rd, or 5th and no reverse! no speed sensor codes, but speedometer has been sporadic and my issues arises after a car wash.
Thank you for the video! We’ve had SO many similar problems. Hope it’s just the sensor 🤞🏼

Helpful video, I ended up finding to cuts in the wire going to by speed sensor. Caused every light almost on the dash to be on.
That will definitely cause it too! Hopefully you found that before buying a new sensor.
Thanks for sharing. I have all those same light on on my mom's jetta. Probably have to pay someone, but I like going in knowledgeable.
You're welcome. Hope you found someone to replace the sensor.
You're a GOD. I was having the SAME problems including the downshifting.

Headed to the dealership now to get my 2017 Passat back. ABS wheel censor fix cost me $593 US dollars.
just quoted a $600 repair from St*kes VW in North Charleston S.C. for my 2018 Passat... had it repaired at Firestone Auto Repair for $300. I have been a VW customer for YEARS (5 different VW's, 6 if you count the Karhman Ghia i had in high school). The wheel speed sensors are clearly a poor design.
My issue started off like that. Then eventually the lights stayed on all the time, until I replaced the sensor.
Same issue with vw cc 2012
The problem is that when i stop for a little while the error cleaned and the diagnostic scanner can not see any errors.

Glad you were able to get it fixed! Amazing how many problems a little sensor can cause sometimes.
Great video thank you. We’re can I get the code reader wire ? Do you need any special software to use it?
Thank You! ross-tech.com/ They offer the software for free but you do have to buy the cable.

Any ideas?
Is the only code that popped back up for the RR sensor? If so, and the sensor is testing properly you could have a damaged wire somewhere.
@@VHickleGarage it's throwing codes for electrical faults on the other abs sensors now as well. There are other codes as well for the random lights that have went off, all are the exact ones shown in your video!

Good info; straight to the point.
got the same lights plus the battery light along with the steering light. car wont start but will turn over. any ideas? (vw gti 2011)

I'm not entirely sure. It could be something to do with the computer. Have you scanned it again since replacing all the sensors?
Hey !! can you give an update on the downshifting ?? had the same issue with the wheel speed sensors on my polo 6C, Replaced the sensors and have no error codes but that random downshift happens on bad roads, especially from 2nd to 1st gear. is it just how DSG behaves while moving slowly on bad roads??
I have same issue with VW CC 2013, lets hope this fixes the issue.
It should. If not check the wiring. If it's not that, then it's probably the ABS module, which is going to be a bigger and more expensive repair. WIth as common as this is, it's probably just the sensor. Good Luck!
Is this sensor on the driver side or passenger side I’m having the problem on my 2016 Jetta 1.8 and wanna get this job done this weekend
Each corner of the car has a sensor, and each sensor is specific to that location. You'll need to scan it to figure out which sensor. Alternatively you can just buy all 4 and change them out, but there's always a small chance that it's not a sensor. Scanning is always the best 1st step.
Same issue on 2011 jetta. Thank you!!
Would disconnecting the battery clear the abs codes?
Possibly, but best practice will always be to scan, and clear the codes with a VAG-COM.

Hello, what software did you use to find what the problem was? Thank you.
How do i know which wheel speed sensor i need? Is there a special computer for that
yes, your PC.... to find a different brand of automobile to purchase. after owning 5 VW's i think it's time to switch brands. if VW can't design a more reliable wheel speed sensor, will you trust them with the safety of your family?
The best is a VAG-COM cable from Ross-Tech and a laptop. I believe you can see which sensor with any OBD2 scanner though.
really helpful, thank you for this video so much my car was doing this and i took it to a mechanic and he said that it needs a lot of stuff which really scared me but after seeing this video i did it myself and everything is working great now thank you!
Awesome, glad to hear it saved you from a bunch of expensive and unnecessary repairs!!
Hey I have this issue plus now my 7:12 speedometer isn't working also. Do you have any suggestions on that
It's still most likely your speed sensor.
Hello! My testimony after this thorough and simple video (which I gratefully thank you for putting out!):
- sensor replaced: lights still on;
- magnetic ring wheel bearing replaced (it was needed and to further troubleshoot): lights still on.
Since live data showed that rear left wheel sensor was soundingly collecting data and no diagnosis errors report other than right wheel:
- Still need to check cables from rear left wheel up to abs control unit and if anomaly isn't from there, need to check fuses, voltage/power/etc from that end.
...this is an exhaustive process since I'm not a mechanic and these darn lights started their Christmas by themselves after 1 year of routine driving with no issue whatsoever...
@@marcelosilva9429 Got it. Hopefully it's just a small short in that rear right wiring. 🤞
Can you please help i have a 2004 Volkswagen Jetta 2.0 automatic transmission the car is not shifting at all the code is p0715 i bought these speed sensor i dont know where there located. I have check engine light airbag and break light its a circle with lines on both side believe it is that are on all orange can you reach out directly with any possible feedback such as location of this sensor etc would be highly appreciated
Hello sir how are you what brand did you use for ABS sensor please help me because I want to buy my ABS sensor I have 2014 Nissan Altima 2.5 l s my right front ABS sensor not good they need to replace so I want to know what brand sensor I should order thank you once again
Hola tengo un gli 2013 con el mismo problema pero como sabes de qué llanta es el problema ?
I currently have the same issue with my Passat tdi. The thing is, the dealership part costs $190 and the AutoZone one is $32. Some repair shop owner said I might "fry my computer" if I went aftermarket. I don't believe him because the AZ part is specified. Then again, I only gamble when I know I'll win. Hmm.
Aftermarket sensors can be a gamble, but I think it's pretty unlikely to fry the computer. I have replaced 2 of my sensors with aftermarket and have not had a problem. Ordered online for even less than AZ.
@@VHickleGarageThank you.
Having same issue. Thanks so much! Great video.
Glad it helped!
What diagnostic tool did you use and how much was the new sensor
I'm having the issues with everything you mentioned but my code is a faulty is Abs module could it be the same as tps sensor?
The Speed Sensor, TPS, and ABS module are all different things. If you're getting the code for the wheel speed sensor then I would start with replacing that first. If you only code is the ABS module then that is most likely your problem.
Thanks for sharing, excellent video
Where did you buy that OBD2 diagnostic tool?
www.ross-tech.com/ . . . It's a VAG-COM, much more than just a basic OBD II scanner. If you have an VW/Audi car that you plan to work on, and keep for a long time it's well worth the price to buy.
So I have a 2019 I’ve replaced me entire abs wheel speed harness and sensor and it’s fixed nothing even throwing epc code now
Which codes did you have at the beginning? Just sensors? If you've done that much already, it sounds like the ABS module itself could be bad.
@@VHickleGaragethe one thing I haven’t replaced yet is the wheel bearing and I’m wondering I’m that’s it
I have the same exact lights. Why would the wheel speed sensor cause an air bag light?
I believe it's because under a certain speed the air bags shouldn't deploy in an accident, and with the bad sensor the computer may not be sure of the vehicle speed. I'm not 100% sure of that though.
Mine broke is there a way to get it out without taking off the wheel bearing ?
The bolt broke, or the sensor broke? If it's just the sensor it should be pretty easy to drill out since it's mostly plastic. Alternatively, you could use a torch to heat it up and probably get it out that way.
If it's the bolt, you're going to need an extractor (never works for me), or you'll have to carefully drill it out and then chase the threads, or re-tap it. Worst case would be drilling it out too far, in which case a helicoil kit would probably be your only solution.
Did you have any issues with brakes locking up due to the bad sensors?
I have not experienced any issues with that because of the speed sensor. I don't think I've heard anyone else report that either. Not a stretch since this is the ABS system, but that might be indicative of a different problem. Have you scanned the computer to see which codes are showing?
Will this fix the epc light after i hit 3d gear it stalls on the jetta 2.5 2012
I can't say for sure. Sounds like you might have other issues. I don't think a speed sensor failure would cause it to stall in 3rd. Have you scanned? Any other codes? If not that would be the first thing to check.
@@VHickleGarage yes codes 01314 ECM
And codes p0222 and p0122 throttle/pedal position sensor circuit low input
Hi I had a same lights coming on while driving and car wasn't moving, they said it mechatronics I paid R30 000 and 1 week later samething"showing
Change the sensor and it didn’t fix my problem the lights went away for a couple minutes then came back on idk what the problem could be
What codes did you have before, and are you still getting the same codes after changing the sensor?
@@VHickleGarage the codes before were
1 right front speed sensor
2.vehicle voltage terminal 30
3. Break light switch
4. Tire pressure monitoring controls moduel and the codes I have now are low transmission fluid , cruise break switch , abs controle moduel I have all
The lights u used to have but after I changed the sensor sometimes the lights do go away but once I do a turn or drive for a bit they all come on again
@@VHickleGaragehad to come back to this vidoe and I put a new sensor on and well that wasn’t my case at all my friend checked that car and he saud my air filter needs to be placed or my MAF sensor and my rotors are bad and to top it off my gti is leaking oil a lot so yea
Maybe you should check out the strobe function on your cluster...
I don't have this scanner. Can I clear the codes by removing the battery cable and draining the system ?
You can't clear all the codes without a scanner, but if you replace the sensor then the lights might go away on their own after driving it for a whiel.
