What’s needed to turbo a stock Honda other then the kit bov/ wast gate fuel pressure regulator just to run like 7psi like what tuning or chip or do you need timing what’s the cheapest way ?
Always check it on a dyno with a pro, engines are expensive. And more than the price of paying a tuner, if you have the knowledge to get it running ok then you can cruise it in to a tuner for a check up and fine tune

I just finished my turboed vtec built z6 but im waiting for the tuner to be available, I know you said he is running the car for 2 years no issues would my build be fine on stock ecu and fueling for about 2 weeks or is the change in compression going to cause it to run way to lean? Can you tell if anything is going wrong while driving? I really want to drive the car while I wait but I am scared of blowing up the engine
depends what wastegate spring you have and what spark plug gap you have and what your fuel pressure reg is set at, i would say if you are sensible with your driving it will be fine

Just to bring up the turbo sizing on the d series, I agree a td04 is the perfect size, but in my opinion, anything smaller isn’t really toooo worth it. it then become an issue of lack of flow/ boost output, td04 is probably the smallest turbo that will happily boost along the mighty Y4 for days. However the bigger version From Subaru the vf35? Or someshit would absolutely shit on any size eBay turbo, they’ve got the balls to boost up high & keep flow at any rpm/ speed, they’re also very responsive! But I’m pretty sure they’re not too cheap anymore, bang for the bucks can vouch td04 +1, however personally what I found with the td04 having a smaller diameter it runs out of juice in 4th/5th gear, wouldn’t be ideal for roll racing but still gonna chop fools
VF35 is gonna run outta steam around 350hp. My eBay GT3071R in my b18 spooled similarly to a VF39 but was good to almost 500. Never ran into a subie that could outrun me including my own STi.
Really enjoy your content I’ve been learning a lot!, I’m new to boost builds I have a Fully stock 97 CX with a D16y7 I’d like to add this same turbo kit to, question is, would I need any upgraded internals or a trans swap to have it running reliably? Appreciate any info Thank you! 🤙🏼
do not bother with the internals just make sure the compression is even across all cylinders and send it a good tune will be much better than a built engine, in my experience and the experience of two of my friends the 3 of us all had built engines they all blew up not long after building them, i built my own engine and the other two guys paid well over 10k to have motors built and mine lasted the longest, don't build it just tune it and slap the turbo on this car is still running the same set up over a year later and he daily drives the car
Wow that’s opposite of what I was thinking, thanks for the heads up I was almost going to order rods pistons and a cam for the head. I did manage to find a D16y8 head recently for a decent price, I’m thinking of doing the mini me swap and adding boost to that. Appreciate your quick response
So im interested in parts that u linked in the vid sig! But how does this work since id be ordering from usa and need shipped to the usa? Is the pricing on maxspeedingrods prices in usd? Any help is. Appreciated
I kid you not I’ve watched all your d16 turbo videos at least 10 times per vid in the last week bc I’m about to turbo my Honda and am worried im going to mess something up
@@TURBOTRISTO based in America. any thoughts on running this setup with a fmu (rising rate fuel pressure regulator) and a wide band to make sure I’m not running lean? Got everything ready for boost just need to pick up a couple silicone couplers and a feed and return line.
@@loganschultz689 correct there is nothing stopping you from turbo'ing the current motor exactly the way it is, as I always recommend though please run some sort of fuel management, talk to the tuner you intend to use and ask their recommendation on what to use to manage the air and fuel
If you are a master pie cut welder with lots of time it will fit. Piture 500 grapefruit slices welded together but the shape it has to be still kills flow. Too expensive to pay someone for that downpipe. Once it fits you still don't hv great workjngba/c u gotta run pusher fan . And flows killed

Hello mate, there are a million more things we need to know first. If you only want a little bit of boost really any basic turbo will make boost, but I would need to know what type of budget you plan on doing this with and how you plan on tuning the car, who is doing the install and what manifolds and lines and intercooler pipes ect you want to use, I would suggest going in to your local performance fabrication and mechanical shop and talking to them before buying anything
hello what is this manifold ? not simple for me to understand,i'm french and i use translate, but some time the translate is not good for 1 or 2 words,it's ok,i can understand but for technical words it's crap. so can you tell me the exact model for this manifold and the exact model for th turbo ? this manifold,is it reliable,or is it better to have cast iron ? thank you
@@TURBOTRISTO ok thanks For performance it's better than the other, but what about broken with the weight of turbo ? The welds can keep in a long time ?
5 psi is actually closer to 20% more power max. Not double. So if the car got 120 hp stock, you now have about 140-150hp. You are running it with high octane or regular fuel?
Around 16psi doubles power, in theory it would be 14.7:1, but there are efficiency issues that make it around 16psi to double it. So 5 psi would be worth 5/16 or 31%.
@Dennis Robinson depends on how you look at it. 14psi only gets about 50% extra power, if you look at it from the perspective of there already being 14psi in the atmosphere, plus 14psi is actually 28psi. By those metrics, you won't ever come even close to 10% more power with 16psi (only 2psi boost) Or, if your zero line is 14psi, your total psi will be 30, and it's probably possible to make 60% more power with that. But definitely not +100%.
On the bazillion dynos I've seen 8 psi gets around 50% over na and 15 to 16 psi gives 2x over na. Its not perfect but 14 psi isn't usually 2x its a bit less.
100% man I know I tell people all the time, but funny an ecu is not in most people’s budget for some reason🤷🏻♂️ fun fact the car has been daily driven now for two years still going strong
@@BTB_Works yea man the reg on the factory rail is a spring loaded diaphragm it is not adjustable even with engine management and maxing out the fuel pump it won’t be enough for over 10psi, if you change the injectors and fuel pump and not the reg will make the stock reg fail

What’s needed to turbo a stock Honda other then the kit bov/ wast gate fuel pressure regulator just to run like 7psi like what tuning or chip or do you need timing what’s the cheapest way ?
Check out some of my how to videos
Hey Tristan. Would you recommend getting a new turbo setup professionally tuned or will a ecu tune done by myself, assuming done correctly, suffice?
Always check it on a dyno with a pro, engines are expensive. And more than the price of paying a tuner, if you have the knowledge to get it running ok then you can cruise it in to a tuner for a check up and fine tune
where did you get your oil filter relocation kit?
The customer bought it on marketplace , tbh it was junk we replaced all the fittings with raceworks ones the next day as they all leaked
Im guessing you would block the map sensor hole, relocate it and get a feed from somewhere else?
Yeah I’m experimenting with that now might do a video on it soon
My friend wants to get a little more power out of his subaru legacy 2.5 without doing a turbo or ecu upgrades, could I use a small supercharger or is that dangerous, it says it's for 2.0 to 3.5 litter engines. Can I do what you do and just keep it a single bolt on. Thanks.
there isnt a lot you can do if you dont want to do the ecu. i would tell him to buy a new car if its too slow,
sunbarus are unreliable at the best of times
Currently looking at this turbo, how has this turbo treated you? Would you recommend this turbo or not?
PS: Might leave this same comment on a few of your videos regarding this turbo lol
Turbo works fine it’s been nearly two years it’s still going strong
Done auto T d16 noV for now .. can the ek subframe also work on d16 or only the eg . Maybe one day k24 or h22 . If i have to get both i dont care. I need a subframe for the d16 is four door that matter ? dont tell noone lol delete this when u read it .. thought i emailed you a while Back but cant find it ..
an integra dc4/dc2 or an EG subframe are the best for a kswap, but the stock ek subframe is perfect for a H22/b18 /b20 swap
@@TURBOTRISTO ok the ek subframe is what i need if thats for d16 . looks like if do even a stock pull shits going down lol
@motivationaltwist7026 stock subframe is fine for 2000hp as long as the engine mounts and axles can cope hhhaa only reason you would change it is to run a Kswap
@@TURBOTRISTO ima link u on ig now and show u the subframe
Blox makes a map bypass and blox fmu helps a lot 🤙🏻
yeah we were experimenting with the budget stuff
Cool videos cool accent
Thanks Blake appreciate your support
I want a sleeper turbo that coppers won’t be able to see do you have any susgestions on kits ?
All kits will do fine, we can cover it in certain ways and paint stuff black ect
Hey turbo Tristan, I have bought a d16 turbo kit and running it on a stock ecu I only want the flutter and I took it for a test drive and it made the noises I wanted, I know u said u don’t recommend driving it on a stock ecu but if I daily drive it once and a while to uni and back will it be alright? This is only until I get my proper ecu still saving for it but I really wanted to hear the turbo flutter not trying to push it all they way sorry if I sound like a noob 🤓
If you run less that 5 psi and crank up the fuel pressure it should be ok ish
@@TURBOTRISTO how much fuel pressure should the regulator read then
@@Christian-ml5pw I would put it at 50psi base pressure
If thats a journal bearing turbo you need to open up that hole to a 3an, you'll starve that turbo of oil
I’ll look into it thank you major
Are you notching the block for those rods
It’s stock bro
Ok i have a 1996 honda civic hx d16y5 sohc 5 speed 2door coupe. what all do i need to buy for a turbo to be added
You need to watch my videos and they have the answers
hey mate just curious on why you re-located or made a new bracket for the wastegate instead of welding shut the flapper on the turbo side and adding an external gate when the exhaust manifold allows for one cheers
Because the external gate is illegal and the customer didn’t want it, plus the turbo came with a wastegate and he was on a budget didn’t need to spend extra money
What do you think about putting in rdx 410cc injectors for this engine for 8 psi?
I beleive the d16y8 has bigger injectors or bseries have 240cc injectors these have 190cc
410 would be great
hi tristan , i am dani i am in Perth WA , i have ej8 with d16y8 in it and i am actually running similar set up with this turbo set up , same turbo, manifold and probably intercooler kit too, and the question is which downpipe is that, is that fully custom hand made or it’s after market and custom modified to fit? thanks tristan
this down pipe I custom made if you watch the video I show it and mention that I welded it myself, thanks for watching I appreciate the support man
Will this work on a D15? I just got a 93 Del Sol and I want to turbo it. Is your kit available to buy yet?
Yes sure will
Wasson on man sick as videos just wondering I’ve got a d14a4 non tec and I’ve put a turbo on it what’s the best I can do without a tune to keep it safe ? Cheers man
Good fuel pump and fuel rev low boost under 7psi and send it

Bought a 98 civic with a d16y7 and ordering a turbo kit off max speed is there anything you can tell me I’m going to run into I’m not sure of absolutely everything I’m going to need and can’t find a complete parts list first time boosting anything🙏🏼
i did a video that has around 300k views it tells you everything about the kits and how they work, I advise you to take all the fittings and hoses to a performance parts shop and replace them with high quality fittings other than that you cant go wrong

amazing vid bro!
I really want to turbo by d16 but with my strict budget I wouldn't be able to get an ECU or a tune for it.
Should i abandon the project or is it do-able with something like a rising rate pressure regulator and more bits? im looking to daily it too with like 7 psi at most maybe 10? any help would be appreciated brother, keep up the NA Civic project loving it!
Thanks man, you can do exactly what I just did in this vid man
How much do you

I just finished my turboed vtec built z6 but im waiting for the tuner to be available, I know you said he is running the car for 2 years no issues would my build be fine on stock ecu and fueling for about 2 weeks or is the change in compression going to cause it to run way to lean? Can you tell if anything is going wrong while driving? I really want to drive the car while I wait but I am scared of blowing up the engine
Was told its fine because I have an external boost controller set all to the lowest setting but am still nervous
depends what wastegate spring you have and what spark plug gap you have and what your fuel pressure reg is set at, i would say if you are sensible with your driving it will be fine
@@TURBOTRISTO ah thank you so much! I left the springs that came with the turbosmart wastegate so i’ll probably take them out for now because I believe its one 14lb spring, Ill probably baby it around for now. Ill keep a close watch on the fpr
Do you have any videos on a boosted d16y5? I’m trying to figure out the difference between boosting a vtec and non vtec
I have heaps on videos on a boosted y8 with vtec
Both have the same results
Just to bring up the turbo sizing on the d series, I agree a td04 is the perfect size, but in my opinion, anything smaller isn’t really toooo worth it. it then become an issue of lack of flow/ boost output, td04 is probably the smallest turbo that will happily boost along the mighty Y4 for days. However the bigger version From Subaru the vf35? Or someshit would absolutely shit on any size eBay turbo, they’ve got the balls to boost up high & keep flow at any rpm/ speed, they’re also very responsive! But I’m pretty sure they’re not too cheap anymore, bang for the bucks can vouch td04 +1, however personally what I found with the td04 having a smaller diameter it runs out of juice in 4th/5th gear, wouldn’t be ideal for roll racing but still gonna chop fools
agreed Robbie, Chopping fools is what its all about
Great now teach me how to put it in l
VF35 is gonna run outta steam around 350hp. My eBay GT3071R in my b18 spooled similarly to a VF39 but was good to almost 500. Never ran into a subie that could outrun me including my own STi.
Uhh so jelous ! I wanna chop fools ! And stay rocking my 1.5 litre badge
Nice, I got 93 hatch with a d16y8 I wanna turbo
go for it man
Really enjoy your content I’ve been learning a lot!, I’m new to boost builds I have a Fully stock 97 CX with a D16y7 I’d like to add this same turbo kit to, question is, would I need any upgraded internals or a trans swap to have it running reliably?
Appreciated
They have the same parts on their usa site if you check newer vids of mine there are newer links

d17 would be a better option it has more sensors and more tuning capability from stock, go for it mate
it would be the exact same recipe as this car
So ideally I could throw a turbo kit into the D17 with the 2 lobe vtec or would it be better to trade out the heads for non vtec?
Just trying to gauge whether or not I can just get a turbo kit and throw it in and have some fun?
@@loganschultz689 correct there is nothing stopping you from turbo'ing the current motor exactly the way it is, as I always recommend though please run some sort of fuel management, talk to the tuner you intend to use and ask their recommendation on what to use to manage the air and fuel
Could you run AC with a setup like this? I would like to do between 5 and 7 lb and still keep air conditioning
Nah man not really
If you are a master pie cut welder with lots of time it will fit. Piture 500 grapefruit slices welded together but the shape it has to be still kills flow. Too expensive to pay someone for that downpipe. Once it fits you still don't hv great workjngba/c u gotta run pusher fan . And flows killed
Any idea on how much power it makes without a tune ?
No clue I’d guess around 120kw at the wheels max

5psi doubles the power? wow. I need lots of off brand turbos then.
Haha well think about it no boost and then adding 5psi is a huge difference in power
@@TURBOTRISTO 5psi is about a 40% increase in power. Compressor size will play a huge factor, but it's a rough estimate.

I haven’t seen a turbo ep2 that will be cool man
I have td05hr 16g 1.0.5t on my d16 motor. No body makes a manifold. So I made one and I kep AC. It's a tight fit but it can be done. It's twin scroll, decent sized turbo.

@@TURBOTRISTO thanks 😁

@StefNefast this car is still going strong
@@TURBOTRISTO thank you
With your videos i learn to turbo a D16.
In my case it's a D16A9 in a rover 216 gti 16v.
@StefNefast awesome car man
5 psi is actually closer to 20% more power max. Not double. So if the car got 120 hp stock, you now have about 140-150hp.
You are running it with high octane or regular fuel?
High octane man,
Car has been daily driven for over a year now
Around 16psi doubles power, in theory it would be 14.7:1, but there are efficiency issues that make it around 16psi to double it.
Hi Tristan I love watching all your videos and I would like to contact you cause I have an EK hatch d16y4 here in Melbourne. pls let me know.
Sure what’s the issue?
Do you want to turbo it?
I need some opinions whether i can turbocharged mazda familia 1.3cc on carburetor system?.
You can but it’s a pain in the butt, research draw through carby or blow through carby there is two ways to turbo a carby
All you need is ecu and you will feel the power i swear😈😂
100% man I know I tell people all the time, but funny an ecu is not in most people’s budget for some reason🤷🏻♂️ fun fact the car has been daily driven now for two years still going strong
@@TURBOTRISTO yes ecu a little pricey and of course tune for best drive love honda🫶🏻❤️
i guess that if we were going to use a tune-able ecu, there was no need for the rising rate fuel pressure regulator
You can’t adjust the fuel pressure with the ecu it’s a mechanical operation
@@TURBOTRISTO ah, so still have to get one
@@BTB_Works yea man the reg on the factory rail is a spring loaded diaphragm it is not adjustable even with engine management and maxing out the fuel pump it won’t be enough for over 10psi, if you change the injectors and fuel pump and not the reg will make the stock reg fail
Needs an external waste gate vented to atmosphere ;-)
Yeah it does but not in Australia, this is a sleeper and in Australia you get pumped for that stuff
