Nintendo's approach is paying off. They were laughed at for years for having the inferior hardware, but little did we know, they were secretly playing the long game. Now when their next handheld/console hybrid is only about as strong as a PS4 it'll still be the easiest platform to make games at a fairly consistent rate. The problem with literally everything else is the tech is so strong, the ambition for many games is unrealistic, and development time and costs are inflated to the point that little is accomplished and when things do release it often times doesn't catch on. However, smaller games are becoming the answer as they have smaller budgets, less development time, have the ability to take more risks, and often the results like Nintendo games, some 3rd party, and especially Indie games are the real success stories these days.

Intel seemed to have a bit of an advantage in architecture, but eventually they were likely to run into the same headwinds as IBM, slowing or stopping progress across the entire industry. Honestly I’d argue it’s never been the hardware limitations that kept things in check. It’s kinda helped due to hard stops in capability. But it’s the studios, executives and producers that have lost the plot themselves. They have not only become INSANELY UNPRODUCTIVE. But they’ve become incredibly cynical. Particularly the bean counters who started outside video games after they dwarfed Hollywood and music. I reckon gaming is infested with parasites who aggressively DO NOT CARE about the actual product they sell. They’re either money farmers or political activists with a chip on their shoulder. They could’ve thought and done the exact same thing during the ps1 and game cube generations. But they didn’t.

I got a PS5, the only reason why I don't consider it a total waste is because I had Xbox One last gen, so I can catch up with PS4 games. But as far as PS5 games, there isn't really anything except Astro Bot (One game, I don't know why...)
Nintendo knows how to make full use of the upgraded power, especially Monolith. PS5 Pro is almost Sony’s last gasp. By the time Switch 3 hits Sony will be basically dead and Xbox will be a distant memory

The whole best realism graphics thing they're going for is so far from the point that should be aimed for, games are mostly escapism and entertainment... So why would I want it to look like real life? Where's all that goofy fictional goodness that Nintendo pulls off on the daily? It's not there, and that's probably a large reason why Nintendo can feel so unique. They aim for fictional perfection, it looks and feels amazing while having its own stylistic visuals instead of focusing on every crack in a rock or the pores on someone's skin.
I think the last few Zelda games (TP, SS, BotW and TotK) have the (conceptually) perfect balance between realism and cartoony graphics and I would say that Insomniac's Spider-Man and Batman: Arkham knight are about as realistic as you can go before it's in the territory of the uncanny valley/details that doesn't make a meaningful difference. The level of detail in these games with a 4K resolution, ray tracing and 60FPS performance is more than enough. Just give us a good controller and fun games with little to no performance issues and we'll all be perfectly satisfied for years to come
I feel the reality of the situation is that in terms of graphics gaming has reached its peak. Sure you could still make small improvements here and there but for 90% of people the graphics we have now are more then good enough. So marketing an entire console around the fact that the graphics are very slightly improved (ps5 pro) just doesn’t appeal to anyone. Just because you can make the graphics even better doesn’t mean you should when by far most people are more then satisfied with what we have now. Especially when the cost of these small improvements becomes so much more expensive. Nintendo has essentially proven that you can have a game console last for a decade as long as you keep supporting it with games that people enjoy. They will do the same thing with the switch successor. Make a console that has around the graphics capability of a last gen console (ps4 pro) and they will make it last a decade, and everyone will be fine with that because the games are what people actually care about. Whats the point of a ps5 pro when there are virtually no new ps5 games to look forward to in the near future and they have to result to marketing the ps5 pro with games that came out over 3 years ago (ratchet and clank, tlou 2) its frankly embarrassing.
I bought a ps5 on launch, and I sold it because, say it with me now! "It just has no games", and with the money from it I bought myself a Steam Deck OLED, and honestly, I regret nothing.
I live in a rural town of 3,000. I was born in 01. I grew up on a PS1, PS2, XBox 360, and Wii. Also half the town didn't have internet even as late as 2019. Now all the kids in my town have gaming PCs and everybody has an internet connection. It's strange being so young yet old enough to watch the death of the console. Still to this day I've never seen a PS5 or XBox Series X in person or known someone who owned one. Not once.
Once Nintendo makes a PS4/PS5 level handheld, I would be completely content in them saying that this is their last console, and that they will just support it till the end of time. I’ve always cared about the games over looks (heck, my favorite game is FF7 for the PS1) So if their next console can play the games without horrible frame rates, it’ll be great and I’d be happy to

Big brick of electronics is expensive to develop and manufacture, but if customers fronted thst cost, well, they just wouldnt buy it or be able to afford it.
"People will move to PC", people are already doing that because they're not getting games on their consoles. Except Nintendo, the Switch is delivering in spades, which furthers the point that maybe console generations should either last longer, or focus less on graphics, so that people will have games to buy/play.
PS5 still feels like a minute upgrade from the 4, so the fact that they upgrade again for ludicrous prices without even having that many games, it just shows how out of touch they are

To me, as PC gamer... The Switch has appeal unlike a PS5 or Xbox One. Due to 1. Exclusive ganes 2. Motion gimmicks that are USED, 3. How else am I supposed to play Modern mario games? Splatoon 2 and 3?
Honestly if they really want to take consoles and gaming to the next level they need to start making controllers that offer more options for game development. I don’t understand why pro controllers with paddles and extra buttons aren’t just standard now a days. We proved back when the anolog sticks were introduced and then extra should buttons and what not that if you place a button properly then you can greatly enhance what inputs and features can be included in a game. And the paddles on the back end of controllers is becoming more and more the standard for most gaming.
EXACTLY what I've been saying - instead of raising the barrier to entry with a $700 superpowered console no one can afford (will be at least $1000 here in Australia), LOWER the price on the standard PS5 and heaps of people like me will actually upgrade from their PS4 and join the PS5 party for the first time. Something Funny. For the same price as a PS5 Pro, you can get a PC that will last roughly 2 Console Generations. Not have to pay for online multiplayer (except in the handful of games that do charge you.), and have access to almost all the games you could ever want to play...
The technology is growing pretty steady if you ask me. The issue is that it can't keep up with the imagination. During the PS1 days developers needed to owkr with what they had, these day they don't and consequently overdo it. Games are now suffering from feature creep, scope creep, scale creep, all the creep.
Although i agree that we have reached a point with the PS5 that we need to turn our focus on style and performance when it comes to the switch it was in dire need of better hardware day 1. If we get a switch 2 that can run a solid 60 fps 1080p and uses dlss for upscaling with HDR support I would see that as perfect with no need for anything more at that point.
Thanks to console wars and lusting after better specs, the GAMING community to me feels less like a gaming community and more like a tech improvement community. Sure, people talk about new games, but what gets talked about most is simply which console is better in terms of performance. And honestly? Sick of it. Sick of it ages ago. Like, I’d much rather enjoy games rather than new tech I can do nothing with. I want the gaming community to be about games. There’s plenty of subcommunities about different types of games, but I’d much rather have dialogue between those communities to allow for more innovation in gameplay rather than tech. Instead of upgrading vertically, I believe we should upgrade horizontally.
Tbh in my opinion I think consoles & computers have reached a pretty strong point for gaming if anything the need for evolution is now dependent on the scope of games
Trying to make stuff look realistic is total bs and Nintendo saw that coming a long time ago when they said the graphics don't count as much but gameplay is where the action is at.
one thing that i don't like about consoles is the fact that you basically have to change the console for the new one every new generation and sometimes we lose games with this. like the fact that you can't play your ps1 to ps3 games on the ps4/ps5 on pc you can play all of the games from previous generation you can still play games that aren't sold anymore or that came in a past generation and pc also have a lot of indie games and not every indie game release on console this thing i like on pc i think not everyone does thing. but one thing i love to do is play different games with different controllers from other consoles
thats why i like pc. more than anything else, having access to massive amounts of games, and more with emulators, is such a plus. plus absolutely anything you do. i know some people like just play games and they justt have windows and steam, but all the other adjacent stuff you can do like run dedicated servers and stuff like idk console seems too limited
@@gamagama69 also in pc i don't need to pay for a monthly subscription to play online one time i wanted to get help from my friends in a xbox game. and i couldn't because i didn't have their subscription. and the thing i wanted help would just be completed in a few hours. like pay for a monthly subscription just to use it for a few hours and don't use it again and also pc games are way more cheap on pc. because of steam sales i got a lot of games. i live in brazil and a full price game is stupidly expensive here. but with the steam sales with the price of one full price game i can buy multiple games
Yaaaay I’m one of the first 1000 subs!!!!! Also i really really hope that consoles die out so that more resources get funneled into producing more and better games made and optimized for PC :3 The biggest issue I always have is playing games like Dragon Quest or the Mana series by Square Enix and looking at the keybinds with my hands above my head
I speak this as a PC gamer, consoles fulfil a niche of ease of use and budget performance, PC gaming has only gotten more expensive as DDR5 came out (we are past the Golden age of 2016-2022 now), they also are WAY more convenient to set up in something like a living room, that's what it should remain as and target, the PS5 and Series X TRIED to compete with PC's via targetting ultra high end graphics and raytracing, but that doesn't work when you're comparing something that is fixed to something that is upgradeable like PCs.
ddr5 is about the price ddr4 was when i was building my first computer in 2018. its the fact that any motherboard you actually want is super expensive, and ones you dont are super expensive. been considering getting something damaged to stay under $100
Windows 11 PC Gaming is proof that XboxSeriesX has very little to no benefit at all being that powerful & enhanced, especially because Microsoft is now dumping a lot of their own first-party game franchises into third-party releases without requiring a console for Xbox game pass, and Streaming Services are no benefit from Modern PlayStations and Xboxes either since Smart TVs also already come with that feature as well! Initially, I was looking forward to see what 2028 would bring us with a PS6 and XboxPlatform (that's my headcanon name for the XboxSeries' hypothetical successor), but after seeing all the lack & failures of usefulness for XboxSeriesX, let alone how PS5-Pro made itself very worthless, with or without an Xbox counterpart, goes to show that while Console Wars were really fun for multi-platform releases of enhanced gaming, it clearly isn't relevant anymore because of how much technology has changed over the past couple of decades, deeming that PlayStation vs Xbox Console-Rivalry as pointless & outdated. PC Gaming is the main platform for Super-Advanced/Enhanced Technology Gaming Hardware now, while Nintendo is the only system now for not only First-Party gaming, but also games with lower hardware that makes their own games much easier to develop faster than usual. I think i've already said enough for this one comment to sum-up my current thoughts on the ongoing status of console-wars.
As a ps5 owner coming in from a PS4 pro, I am so let down. Aside from Astro bot There’s nothing noteworthy about the ps5 only game library. Every good game on. Ps5 is either a rerelease or also available on ps4. If I knew what I do now i would have just skipped this generation completely.
It is, but it's not even the main bottleneck at this point. Developers can barely afford to max out the PS4-development has gotten so absurdly expensive and time-consuming that you need to sell entire countries worth of copies for AAA games to even break even.
I play games on PC and the last play station I had was the PS2 but honestly if there was a more affordable PS5 like you said I would have considered it for Astrobot. However there isn't a more affordable PS5 and there isn't that many other PS5 games besides Astrobot that aren't on PC and I care enough. Even with PS5 games coming to PC, if there was a good sizeable library on PS5 that I know will take a while to come to PC and the PS5 were accessible. I would consider getting it

I switched from an xbox one to a rog ally this generation. Alll the free games I get from epic and the cashback on games is nice. Not to mention extra games from my prime subscription. Honestly pretty nice.
I mean we're already there in terms of resolution and graphics. Eventually frame rates for consoles will be 60 fps as a standard. What's left for consoles to do? Just exist because the corporations want it to? If they don't have good games people aren't going to buy them. So the focus has to be about fun. Make video games fun again.

Just think, that the gaming industry will move from all single-digit generation eras of gaming from the late 20th century to the first quarter of the 21st century to making indie/fan games (re: Super Mario World hacks, mainly the ones with fair difficulty, bonkers gameplay, beautiful graphics whether they be modded versions of the original Super Mario World's graphics or taken from other classic games or handmade or all of the above, as Mario and Nintendo in general, even with all the latter's flaws that need to be fixed, are unstoppable in terms of both its popularity and most of its quality) dominant in gaming. I could give out a bunch of examples of SMW hacks and maybe even make some of my own, but there's thousands!
Generations should probably last longer and longer. Eventually 10-15 years. With only energy efficiencies gained. Traditional length cycles aren’t worth it because moores law has been dead for 20 years. Also mid gen consoles have ALWAYS been dumb. Guess what? Every mid gen by Nintendo has been useless wastes of money too. Like the new 3ds. No one wants to support non-base hardware. Likely reason mid gen keeps getting pushed is because it’s a flimsy but slightly effective way to get the existing customers to buy two consoles. The majority of those will sell or give away their old consoles. Thereby expanding their customer base. At least that’s their fantasy. That kinda worked for ps4 pro. But did it work for Xbox one X? Honestly?
Yeah, console generations used to be ~5 years back in the '80s/'90s. There's no natural law that states they have to be 7-8 years, that has only been the case for the past couple gens. And yes, console "updates" have almost always flopped and been seen as missteps in hindsight. I never really figured out when they became an expectation, because it was really only the last generation that did them with any degree of success.
I have a gaming PC, PS5 and Xbox Series S. It's been about a year and a half since I turned on the Series S and the only game I play on PS5 is Stellar Blade. I play all other games on my PC. These 9th gen consoles are so pointless.
We are at a point (for a while) that in game screenshots can be mistaken by irl photos. Realistic graphics development is dead, at least it should be. Raytracing is REALLY inefficient and dumb
As good as still screenshots can look, the illusion tends to fall apart the moment things start moving (at least for me). Animations and physics are way behind detail and resolution. And yes - raytracing is a dead end unless it gets a _massive_ boost in performance somehow (which seems less and less likely to ever happen). Pretty much everything that raytracing can do can be "faked" some other way.
I think consoles will become like smart phones, where there is barely any difference between the two, and they will just improve them slightly at a consistent basis
While there's been some movement towards this - the PS5/XBX are very similar on a hardware level and the incremental upgrades already exist with the PS4/5 Pro and Xbox X-versions - one of the big advantages consoles have had is that a standardized hardware set makes developing (graphically intensive) games _significantly_ easier as you know exactly what resources you have available. It was one of the reasons (among many) that made developers move away from PC as a lead development platform. Phones aren't really hurt so much by this because of how limited mobile games are.
"If the consoles don't step up, the people will move to PC" when has this EVER been true? While PCs can be more powerful, you're also looking at a system where every component has to be sold at a profit, and there's more to keep in mind when building a PC with gaming in mind. Consoles on the other hand, "hey, this game is for Xbox Series, and I just need 120 GBs free space". The main problem plagueing this generation, especially in the case of Microsoft and Sony, is the drought of content.
Yeah, even as a longtime PC player I don't really see it happening. The golden age of PC gaming was back in the late '90s, and it has since existed more or less on life support from consoles. Nobody makes PC exclusives or PC-first games since like 2 decades (outside of a few specific multiplayer-only genres).
The PS4 and Xbox series have been out for 4 years but we still have barely any games for them, the games are just put into ps4 and Xbox one, what is the point anymore
The power of systems does matter. The power of the systems are what got gamers into gaming. They bought the system because the system has the power to run the games that they want to play.
I think the reason Playstation isnt doing well is because they think all players want is better graphics and better framerate. Which actually seems to be true for most Playstation players.

I feel as if Xbox may not survive much longer, especially considering with how Gamepass will determine the success or failure of the console going forward. Though Playstation itself is just barely hanging on. Nintendo? Well, They're striving. I do hope that the next consoles will still be underpowered compared to the PS5 and XSeries consoles as it becomes more successful. Nintendo isn't much of a "Kiddie" console series anymore, As Nintendo has became more lenient on what's allowed (They allow things that would be censored on Playstation, which is insane). Make a console that has around the graphics capability of a last gen console (ps4 pro) and they will make it last a decade, and everyone will be fine with that because the games are what people actually care about. Whats the point of a ps5 pro when there are virtually no new ps5 games to look forward to in the near future and they have to result to marketing the ps5 pro with games that came out over 3 years ago (ratchet and clank, tlou 2) its frankly embarrassing.

I live in a rural town of 3,000. I was born in 01. I grew up on a PS1, PS2, XBox 360, and Wii. Also half the town didn't have internet even as late as 2019. Now all the kids in my town have gaming PCs and everybody has an internet connection. It's strange being so young yet old enough to watch the death of the console. Still to this day I've never seen a PS5 or XBox Series X in person or known someone who owned one. Not once.
Once Nintendo makes a PS4/PS5 level handheld, I would be completely content in them saying that this is their last console, and that they will just support it till the end of time. I’ve always cared about the games over looks (heck, my favorite game is FF7 for the PS1) So if their next console can play the games without horrible frame rates, it’ll be great and I’d be happy to
Honestly game graphics dont matter to me. Its the gameplay what really gets gamers invested in the games and even the console.
Graphics can improve gameplay up to a point, but we passed that point years ago-if not _decades._

No they didnt? They sold switches at a loss and made back that investment with the software. It's like buying a printer. You pay as much as you do because HP wants you in their ecosystem where they can sell you the real money makers: ink. Big brick of electronics is expensive to develop and manufacture, but if customers fronted thst cost, well, they just wouldnt buy it or be able to afford it.

Many have already said it, but you have the quality and energy of someone who should already have 6 figures on your sub count.
"People will move to PC", people are already doing that because they're not getting games on their consoles. Except Nintendo, the Switch is delivering in spades, which furthers the point that maybe console generations should either last longer, or focus less on graphics, so that people will have games to buy/play.
PS5 still feels like a minute upgrade from the 4, so the fact that they upgrade again for ludicrous prices without even having that many games, it just shows how out of touch they are
System power is at an endgame at this point.
Console Makers need to consider the concept of "Final Gen" Consoles. Just make games. We've got plenty of power now.

To me, as PC gamer... The Switch has appeal unlike a PS5 or Xbox One. Due to 1. Exclusive ganes 2. Motion gimmicks that are USED, 3. How else am I supposed to play Modern mario games? Splatoon 2 and 3?

Honestly if they really want to take consoles and gaming to the next level they need to start making controllers that offer more options for game development. I don’t understand why pro controllers with paddles and extra buttons aren’t just standard now a days. We proved back when the anolog sticks were introduced and then extra should buttons and what not that if you place a button properly then you can greatly enhance what inputs and features can be included in a game. And the paddles on the back end of controllers is becoming more and more the standard for most gaming.
EXACTLY what I've been saying - instead of raising the barrier to entry with a $700 superpowered console no one can afford (will be at least $1000 here in Australia), LOWER the price on the standard PS5 and heaps of people like me will actually upgrade from their PS4 and join the PS5 party for the first time. The technology is growing pretty steady if you ask me. The issue is that it can't keep up with the imagination. During the PS1 days developers needed to owkr with what they had, these day they don't and consequently overdo it. Games are now suffering from feature creep, scope creep, scale creep, all the creep.

Although i agree that we have reached a point with the PS5 that we need to turn our focus on style and performance when it comes to the switch it was in dire need of better hardware day 1. If we get a switch 2 that can run a solid 60 fps 1080p and uses dlss for upscaling with HDR support I would see that as perfect with no need for anything more at that point.

Thanks to console wars and lusting after better specs, the GAMING community to me feels less like a gaming community and more like a tech improvement community.
Sure, people talk about new games, but what gets talked about most is simply which console is better in terms of performance.
And honestly? Sick of it. Sick of it ages ago. Like, I’d much rather enjoy games rather than new tech I can do nothing with. I want the gaming community to be about games. There’s plenty of subcommunities about different types of games, but I’d much rather have dialogue between those communities to allow for more innovation in gameplay rather than tech. Instead of upgrading vertically, I believe we should upgrade horizontally.
Tbh in my opinion I think consoles & computers have reached a pretty strong point for gaming if anything the need for evolution is now dependent on the scope of games

on pc you can play all of the games from previous generation you can still play games that aren't sold anymore or that came in a past generation

thats why i like pc. more than anything else, having access to massive amounts of games, and more with emulators, is such a plus. plus absolutely anything you do. i know some people like just play games and they justt have windows and steam, but all the other adjacent stuff you can do like run dedicated servers and stuff like idk console seems too limited

Also i really really hope that consoles die out so that more resources get funneled into producing more and better games made and optimized for PC :3 The biggest issue I always have is playing games like Dragon Quest or the Mana series by Square Enix and looking at the keybinds with my hands above my head
I speak this as a PC gamer, consoles fulfil a niche of ease of use and budget performance, PC gaming has only gotten more expensive as DDR5 came out (we are past the Golden age of 2016-2022 now), they also are WAY more convenient to set up in something like a living room, that's what it should remain as and target, the PS5 and Series X TRIED to compete with PC's via targetting ultra high end graphics and raytracing, but that doesn't work when you're comparing something that is fixed to something that is upgradeable like PCs.
ddr5 is about the price ddr4 was when i was building my first computer in 2018. its the fact that any motherboard you actually want is super expensive, and ones you dont are super expensive. been considering getting something damaged to stay under $100
Windows 11 PC Gaming is proof that XboxSeriesX has very little to no benefit at all being that powerful & enhanced, especially because Microsoft is now dumping a lot of their own first-party game franchises into third-party releases without requiring a console for Xbox game pass, and Streaming Services are no benefit from Modern PlayStations and Xboxes either since Smart TVs also already come with that feature as well! Initially, I was looking forward to see what 2028 would bring us with a PS6 and XboxPlatform (that's my headcanon name for the XboxSeries' hypothetical successor), but after seeing all the lack & failures of usefulness for XboxSeriesX, let alone how PS5-Pro made itself very worthless, with or without an Xbox counterpart, goes to show that while Console Wars were really fun for multi-platform releases of enhanced gaming, it clearly isn't relevant anymore because of how much technology has changed over the past couple of decades, deeming that PlayStation vs Xbox Console-Rivalry as pointless & outdated. PC Gaming is the main platform for Super-Advanced/Enhanced Technology Gaming Hardware now, while Nintendo is the only system now for not only First-Party gaming, but also games with lower hardware that makes their own games much easier to develop faster than usual. I think i've already said enough for this one comment to sum-up my current thoughts on the ongoing status of console-wars.

As a ps5 owner coming in from a PS4 pro, I am so let down. Aside from Astro bot There’s nothing noteworthy about the ps5 only game library. Every good game on. Ps5 is either a rerelease or also available on ps4. If I knew what I do now i would have just skipped this generation completely.

It is, but it's not even the main bottleneck at this point. Developers can barely afford to max out the PS4-development has gotten so absurdly expensive and time-consuming that you need to sell entire countries worth of copies for AAA games to even break even.
I play games on PC and the last play station I had was the PS2 but honestly if there was a more affordable PS5 like you said I would have considered it for Astrobot.
However there isn't a more affordable PS5 and there isn't that many other PS5 games besides Astrobot that aren't on PC and I care enough. Even with PS5 games coming to PC, if there was a good sizeable library on PS5 that I know will take a while to come to PC and the PS5 were accessible. I would consider getting it

I switched from an xbox one to a rog ally this generation. Alll the free games I get from epic and the cashback on games is nice. Not to mention extra games from my prime subscription. Honestly pretty nice.
I mean we're already there in terms of resolution and graphics. Eventually frame rates for consoles will be 60 fps as a standard. What's left for consoles to do? Just exist because the corporations want it to? If they don't have good games people aren't going to buy them. So the focus has to be about fun. Make video games fun again.

The biggest weakness of consoles came when pcs became more convenient to set up and use and provide way better hardware for the same price if not cheaper, without any of the nasty side effects like an online subscription service
consoles can work and in my opinion will continue to exist so long as they persist with an ecosystem and people will happily buy them, this can be seen with nintendo consoles and in other tech you have apple which does this really well with iphones, macbooks, etc. Sony and microsoft fumbled this, but the biggest loser ultimately is sony

Just think, that the gaming industry will move from all single-digit generation eras of gaming from the late 20th century to the first quarter of the 21st century to making indie/fan games (re: Super Mario World hacks, mainly the ones with fair difficulty, bonkers gameplay, beautiful graphics whether they be modded versions of the original Super Mario World's graphics or taken from other classic games or handmade or all of the above, as Mario and Nintendo in general, even with all the latter's flaws that need to be fixed, are unstoppable in terms of both its popularity and most of its quality) dominant in gaming.

I've been sticking with PC for the foreseeable future and I already have plans on upgrading my 3060 TI rig.
Generations should probably last longer and longer. Eventually 10-15 years. With only energy efficiencies gained. Traditional length cycles aren’t worth it because moores law has been dead for 20 years. Also mid gen consoles have ALWAYS been dumb.
Guess what? Every mid gen by Nintendo has been useless wastes of money too. Like the new 3ds. No one wants to support non-base hardware.
Likely reason mid gen keeps getting pushed is because it’s a flimsy but slightly effective way to get the existing customers to buy two consoles. The majority of those will sell or give away their old consoles. Thereby expanding their customer base. At least that’s their fantasy.

Yeah, console generations used to be ~5 years back in the '80s/'90s. There's no natural law that states they have to be 7-8 years, that has only been the case for the past couple gens.
And yes, console "updates" have almost always flopped and been seen as missteps in hindsight.
I never really figured out when they became an expectation, because it was really only the last generation that did them with any degree of success.

I have a gaming PC, PS5 and Xbox Series S. It's been about a year and a half since I turned on the Series S and the only game I play on PS5 is Stellar Blade. I play all other games on my PC. These 9th gen consoles are so pointless.
We are at a point (for a while) that in game screenshots can be mistaken by irl photos. Realistic graphics development is dead, at least it should be. Raytracing is REALLY inefficient and dumb
As good as still screenshots can look, the illusion tends to fall apart the moment things start moving (at least for me). Animations and physics are way behind detail and resolution.
And yes - raytracing is a dead end unless it gets a _massive_ boost in performance somehow (which seems less and less likely to ever happen). Pretty much everything that raytracing can do can be "faked" some other way.

I think consoles will become like smart phones, where there is barely any difference between the two, and they will just improve them slightly at a consistent basis
While there's been some movement towards this - the PS5/XBX are very similar on a hardware level and the incremental upgrades already exist with the PS4/5 Pro and Xbox X-versions - one of the big advantages consoles have had is that a standardized hardware set makes developing (graphically intensive) games _significantly_ easier as you know exactly what resources you have available.
It was one of the reasons (among many) that made developers move away from PC as a lead development platform.
Phones aren't really hurt so much by this because of how limited mobile games are.

"If the consoles don't step up, the people will move to PC" when has this EVER been true? While PCs can be more powerful, you're also looking at a system where every component has to be sold at a profit, and there's more to keep in mind when building a PC with gaming in mind. Consoles on the other hand, "hey, this game is for Xbox Series, and I just need 120 GBs free space".
The main problem plagueing this generation, especially in the case of Microsoft and Sony, is the drought of content.
Yeah, even as a longtime PC player I don't really see it happening. The golden age of PC gaming was back in the late '90s, and it has since existed more or less on life support from consoles. Nobody makes PC exclusives or PC-first games since like 2 decades (outside of a few specific multiplayer-only genres).
The PS4 and Xbox series have been out for 4 years but we still have barely any games for them, the games are just put into ps4 and Xbox one, what is the point anymore

I think the reason Playstation isnt doing well is because they think all players want is better graphics and better framerate. Which actually seems to be true for most Playstation players.

Nintendo is the only console manufacturer left that is an actual games company at heart. Sony and Microsoft were never particularly interested in games before they launched their consoles, and got involved solely for money reasons.
Yeah. I think the PC is the gaming platform going forward. PCs at home and if you must be on the move then devices like the steam deck which are basically PCs with bundled monitors and controllers. Same PC game libraries as the static units.

I feel as if Xbox may not survive much longer, especially considering with how Gamepass will determine the success or failure of the console going forward. Though Playstation itself is just barely hanging on. Nintendo? Well, They're striving. I do hope that the next consoles will still be underpowered compared to the PS5 and XSeries consoles as it becomes more successful. Nintendo isn't much of a "Kiddie" console series anymore, As Nintendo has became more lenient on what's allowed (They allow things that would be censored on Playstation, which is insane). If Nintendo can continue making the switch a backwards compatible console and proceed to continue using the same cartridge type, That would be amazing.
