Just brilliant. After 45 years of playing golf and 2 years of rebuilding my swing from scratch with literally 1000s of contradicting you tube videos done by the most respected coaches, this series of 3 plus the fade/spoon and hell drill videos put it all together. At age 65 for the first time in my life, I have got something resembling a golf swing.
This video is exactly what I have been blindly working towards!! having it broken down has given me answers to the questions I’ve been tinkering with!!
Ian, you are a very fortunate man to work with Scott Cowx in-person so often. My online lessons with Scott have transformed my swing and golf game; first-in-class instructor. I love the collaboration between Scott and TXG; keep up the fabulous content. I need to make my way to the GTA for a fitting with TXG and an in-person lesson with Scott this year!
This is so similar to what my coach has been teaching me over the last few months. Totally changed my swing from top to bottom in around 3 months and found more distance, better dispersion and way more consistency. Putting the work in on the range is also making my rounds easier on the body and reducing wear and tear on my wrists (struggled with this in the past). It's good to see consistency in what coaches, especially the top guys like Scott, are teaching people from tour pros, right the way down to hackers like me
Next level stuff right there lads. I too have embarked on a winter swing deep dive journey and much of what was chatted about on Ian's swing is what I have as feels as well. More width going back to create space for me to drop back in..... all while rotating low/left to keep the hands from flipping while face path remains square as long as possible. I'm totally geeking out on it right now so keep this kind of content coming. Lovin' it from Calgary.
Love the technical side of things. None of this is relevant to my swing and I love how Scott labours this point. YOUR swing. YOUR body. YOUR muscles. YOUR feels. Absolutely fantastic.
I've perved out on golf swing stuff since in nappies. That lead up coverage of nipple on the way down is SUCH a great feeling for turn. I'm very myluch a high lead arm and reverse tilt is my nemesis. Cheers boys. This was enjoyable
Great stuff! Admittedly I'm terrified of trying any of this stuff without a hands-on instructor to keep me on the rails. But I like the feel of dragging the lead arm down to begin the transition
PXGs an early contender for the new bag in 2023?! Ball speeds looked phenomenal for what appeared to be such an easy effortless swing! Looking forward to the rest of this series as well as the 2023 bag buildout!
Lang may yer lum reek!!! Great Video to start the year. Would creating the space taking the club back more outside and loading it with more depth prevent getting stuck on the downswing?
This is amazing! Happy New Year guys. A proper aha moment with how the arm squeezed against the chest and how high up the the arm is in the downswing, in relation the chest. Can cause tilting. Really looking forward to what this series has coming up. Great effort again guys with the content 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I Love Scott's teachings! So much clarity and purpose in everything he does. No guessing or guesstimating like some pros... He knows what works with what and that's music to my over-analytical mind. Is this pattern considered the "modern swing" everybody teaches these days? (milo lines? GG?) Would Dustin Johnson be considered similar? Also, I'm curious because I've had mixed results with some teachers asking me to bring in the hands in early and thus sticking my lead arm to my chest too early and thus having hands come out in downswing... I'm looking forward to hearing about other patterns for comparison.
I’m glad coaches are all different and communicate differently. As much as I love all the physics and technical knowledge here, it would do nothing for me and just go over my head. It’s too many things to think about.
The explanation of the seatbelt pattern was incredible. It helps me understand so much more about how I sometimes swing! I'm wondering where I can learn more about this pattern.
I’m at it again in my kitchen (I watched this after Matt’s lesson because I’m hopelessly behind on a lot of stuff, including sports). I know I’m just phantom swinging (which I do a lot, mostly just because I love the golf swing), but I think I’ve discovered something. In Matt’s lesson, Scott talks about keeping the arms close to the body, which I liked. Now I know that wasn’t taught here, but the mad golf scientist that I am fit the square peg in the round hole. I’m doing the loading and everything like this video, but I’m keeping the hands close to the body, so the same swing mechanics, just with different arm positions. I found I had the consistency of path (along with big hip enabling) but the arms allowed for the face manipulation for shot shaping. Maybe I’m crazy (I kind of know I am), but I’m a tinkerer by nature and I’m not bothered it it doesn’t work. Science is about experimentation, especially mad science!
I also borrowed the turned in trail foot. It greatly increased my stability. I have good balance in a vacuum but I lose it during swings all the time. I now think my body wants to use my hips, and since my hips are crazy because of my dance background, it naturally creates so much torque in the swing. The foot adjustment stabilizes me without curbing a big strength.
Really useful. I signed up at the PGA Superstore near me so I can use the practice bays with Foresight Quad GCHawk overhead monitors any time to work on my swing this winter (and later, too). I note that I have tended to hit everything to the left with a lot of left sidespin. Attributed most of that to age (81) and lack of ability to turn, leading to arms and hands getting ahead. I have focused on taking the club back straight even outside, and getting he left wrist bowed. But I have not thought of getting the left bicep loaded tight to the chest and lower as Scott shows. It seems that doing so will make it easier to turn without thinking too much about rotating the hips. I have observed that when I tell myself to bring the hands in close to my thighs on the downswing the contact and speed are usually better. I may in fact be doing what Scott is showing Ian, just not thinking of the left arm.
I’m most interested to see how this translates into actually playing golf. I have a problem of getting inundated with technical thoughts on the courses and this approach certainly wouldn’t work for me, but interested to see how this plays out down the line.
Nice swing, great tempo. May not have been paying attention, what club is he hitting, 7 iron? I noticed looking at the results of one of the swings toe was down 2.2. How are Ian’s clubs fitted? Does he have any lie change?
A question I would like to ask about this swing technique is what would the possible correction be for having an open face to path. This is what I have been working on myself and I have a 3-4 degree in to out path but I tend to have a face that is 10 degrees open, unless is feel like im flipping then the path closes up because of that.
Yeah feels like if you're following his instruction to the word this is what would happen. He says shoulders left face right don't understand how that doesnt = mega slice
Not the correction comment you’re looking for but I’m pretty sure he is talking about a “feel vs real” relationship. Through the transition the club should “feel” open and “behind” while using the shallowing of the left arm and the rotation of the body to square it up. In reality the club is square all along. Having a face 10 degrees open would likely be caused by incorrect wrist/arm action.
I think one of the coolest things here is seeing the efficiency even on these "slower" swings. There were a few there at 1.40 with a 6i which is great! I'm a faster player who adds way too much dynamic loft at impact and the result is 6i at 95-97mph but with like 1.3-1.33 efficiency and 20º launch. I'm gonna be trying some of these feels because if I can replicate that efficiency and drop launch angle with the reduced dynamic loft I'm ecstatic!
This is awesome. Would love some sort of plan or program that viewers could use to compliment this. I find the biggest issue is that these can become something to try vs something we can plan and practice.
Curious what might be a. Good focus to transition these thoughts as the club gets longer - aka woods. My shot shape is similar and I struggle with my woods having too much of an in to out shape.
Ian, this sounds like a “side cover golfer”. Very easy to hit strong fades. Aim right and move ball position back and you have Rory draws. I changed to side cover last January. Never been more consistent. Would you agree?
Ian...Are you still set up flat with your lie angles? While you are dialing in the new swing pattern... I suggest baseline your lie angles back to standard lies. if you've been coming up from 5-6 toe deep, to 2 down... those last couple degrees is likely your lie angle. Cheers.. I like this pattern you are working on.
My lead arm tends to get to addicted across my chest and then gets stuck leading to a feeling of the right arm being late and hit massive blocks. Maybe I’m adducting too early. Any thoughts would be massively appreciated Scott
Quick question about this technique. Maybe I'm an exception because I think for me, any re-routing always feels awkward.....and again maybe for me, if I go straight back to the pulling on the seat belt position, I would have less trouble pulling the seatbelt rather going out and around then sliding down the chest to get in the position. Seems to me it complicates the swing rather than simplifies it. I would think....at least for me, that straight back then straight through would be easier. Is there any reason not to?
Great video but please tell Scott that we in the medical field never use the term “dorsiflexion” of the wrist. It’s “extension” of the wrist. Dorsiflexion is commonly used for the ankle.
Interesting stuff - I’m struggling to understand why this is Rory’s release pattern, when you see him practicing firing his arms down hard and aggressively on the range (ie you could say he is practicing almost the opposite of pinning his arm to his chest) 🤷♂️
Huge Rory fan here, I’ve heard him say in a few videos that he works on that drill you referenced to keep his hands and club in front of his body. His turn/pivot is so crazy fast and powerful that he can get the hands and club stuck behind him if he doesn’t feel like the arms are firing. It’s a feel vs real drill.
Still love seeing these 2 back together. Glad everything worked out for them.
Me too!
What happened?
Same…the channel and the chemistry just wasn’t the same!
Things we don’t have in AZ: an “off” season! 😂😂😂

best golf channel on youtube
You know 2023 is going to be good with TXG posting content all together 😅
Oh yeah. I'm really looking forward to this series - free lessons with Scott Cowx, courtesy of TXG 🤓
I love this channel, my day is better when there’s a new video
Very interesting. A lot of information to digest. It’s amazing to see a quality player adjust so easily.
This instruction is the best I’ve seen yet, can’t wait for more. This upperbody arm action is everything
This video is exactly what I have been blindly working towards!! having it broken down has given me answers to the questions I’ve been tinkering with!!
Really looking forward to this series 😀
Thanks

How do you even take online lessons with Scott? I would love to do that!
The essentials of the golf swing.
The two key elements of the golf swing.
from Japan to the world!
Seatbelt! I love the analogy! I will definitely try this when i get out in the range!
Crazy relevant for me and what I've been discovering. Perfect timing. What a great coach
This is perfect. Right on time.
Really looking forward to the lessons.
Half way through and I can already say it's one of the best instruction vids to date. Scott brings so much knowledge. Keep up the good work boys!
Great addition to the channel
Excellent video! Looking forward to the series!!!
Oh good. Matty’s back. As a leftie, I appreciate his perspective.

I've watched this video at least 20 times. Can't wait for the new ones later this week. Thanks guys and Scott!

Excellent video, loopings forward to next session.
Great coach for sure. Great group too!
Great Content! Swing and player improvement is why I joined the channel so many moons ago. Great instruction…Love it guys👏🏻

Best instruction ever !! Driver series please
Love the technical lesson stuff to compliment the other great gear insights 👍
How good boys , loving this type of journey 👌
Happy New Year guys! Can't wait to see all the great content in 2023!
Legend! Love this series!!!!
Wow, this is very relevant, I learned a lot from this
Fabulous content. Really looking forward to this series. Great explanation from Scott. Thank you txg.
What a great coach and the way he breaks everything down! Super helpful and the results are un matched
I've perved out on golf swing stuff since in nappies.

Cheers boys. This was enjoyable
This is so good. Really like the way Scott explains the golf swing and dynamic sequence
@scott cowx is the GOAT
This is the best. Excited for the rest of the lessons!
Great stuff! I learned a lot from this one episode. Keep 'em coming!
I'm working on that same motion staying dynamic with the Dr. Kwon Step Drills 👍
Great tips
Love this guys!
Awesome video. This is such good timing as this is what I'm working on as well.
love this! so much!
Awesome new series idea, keep it going.
Great stuff there!
Really explains the importance of turning and not hitting the ball, which I have been struggling with. Great stuff
Great video
Thanks for sharing, soooo interesting and helpful.
Great stuff!
Admittedly I'm terrified of trying any of this stuff without a hands-on instructor to keep me on the rails. But I like the feel of dragging the lead arm down to begin the transition
enjoyed this video
This is great! I have a similar pattern to you Ian, so hearing this said a different way by Scott is very enlightening.
Very interesting concepts !
Happy New Year and all the best to you. Cheers

Great video! Very informative and I’m excited to see more 🤙🏻

Yes, agreed! Also, I'd love to hear more about the other patterns and how to identify the pattern that best suits a player.
Incredible distances from generating effortless power. Ian doesn’t look like he is swinging hard and yet the ball speeds are high.
Fascinating
I know this swing is more natural for you but id love to hear what the release feels like or SHOULD feel like with this swing thought.
I’m glad coaches are all different and communicate differently. As much as I love all the physics and technical knowledge here, it would do nothing for me and just go over my head. It’s too many things to think about.

Ian, to make the arms work correctly in the downswing, does it feel like the hands are working down and away from the ball as you begin to turn?
I’m most interested to see how this translates into actually playing golf. I have a problem of getting inundated with technical thoughts on the courses and this approach certainly wouldn’t work for me, but interested to see how this plays out down the line.
Loving the camera angles and breakdown of the swing sequence. Good luck with your swings guys.

Bowing the wrist will help, like Rahm, Morikowa etc

been following Scott on instagram so very excited to watch your series. question - how does the lower body behave in all of this?

Ian rocking the GEN5?! 👀
This is great, but is it similarly applicable to driver swing?
Looking Good…
What is the shaft and grip you are using on your irons
Are you two beginning a beard competition? On a serious note, may the coming year bring both of you peace, calm, good health and prosperity.
Horizontal adduction at the shoulder and extension at the right wrist?
My lead arm tends to get to addicted across my chest and then gets stuck leading to a feeling of the right arm being late and hit massive blocks. Maybe I’m adducting too early. Any thoughts would be massively appreciated Scott
What did i miss? Why is Ian hitting a PXG 0317ST iron?
Is that a PXG iron in your hands?
Yup! Wonder if that’s the driving iron that’s getting a lot of attention?
@@Joey1970T during the video they mentioned its a 6 iron
I didn’t get that far into it, thx, yes 6 iron. Interesting
I'm very right side feel dominant. When he was talking through elephant trunk and saying to feel the left bicep rub down the chest. Wow, light bulb
I was wondering to see they were not together in quite a few videos. But did not know there were some differences.
does anyone know why some shot lines are blue and some are green on quad?
I like his green hair
Great video but please tell Scott that we in the medical field never use the term “dorsiflexion” of the wrist. It’s “extension” of the wrist. Dorsiflexion is commonly used for the ankle.
Im glad I wasn’t the only one bothered by it 😂
What is a shallow high flat golf shot? That seems like a contradiction to me?
Great video but can someone pls tell him the wrist does not move into dorsiflexion. Only the ankle does that
