This is probably the most real video I’ve seen in a long time…I feel like Ian is really “struggling” with the idea of being in constant motion at the beginning of this and it’s really refreshing
Obviously being Drew’s size in addition to his power is an advantage but after watching this I don’t think anyone can say speed isn’t a skill. Thanks for a great video.
This is one the best TXG videos ever. To see Ian kind of uncomfortable but also with such quick results. For a guy that already knows so much about golf. There’s a lot here for the avg golfer. His eyes were wide looking at Drew just completely vulnerable and ready to learn. And that’s why Ian knows so much. I learned this drill and similar concepts from Clay at Topspeed golf. Very effective
So I am currently a 8 hcap golfer... not long at all off the tee ... Iron striking is inconsistent. I watched this video and part 2 this Friday.. practiced the spike at the top move on the range on Saturday... things were looking good just direction was a bit off. Got to the range this morning before my round ... was using the same technique and was absolutely flushing it. Took it on the course... level par front 9 and 4 over on the back.. was also a very damp course... my playing partners said that's the best ball striking round they have seen from me ever... especially with the driver. Just to add I am 48 years old and I don't know what a gym looks like 😂 Thank you for the great content.👍👍👍
Just by watching Drew's swing and emulating it has done wonders for me, not getting stuck and stagnant to start the backswing. Now swinging the 5 iron over 100mph without swinging hard. Dr. Kwon has some excellent drills also.
Fantastic. Please have Drew as a regular on this channel. Fountain of knowledge and one of the only instructors on UA-cam that has the horsepower to back it up… having him on more frequently would be next level.💯🙏🙏💪💪☝️🙌🙌☝️☝️
Pretty certain he live in SF BayArea or maybe Napa. Unless they’re developing a split screen format presentation, him becoming a regular is not happening. While I think this was a great video, I just love how the channel has evolved recently. Don’t want to blame the old content on Matt, it’s just that it was equipment demo’s and little else. Recently it’s MUCH more original content, content that doesn’t exist on any competing channel. Maybe it was from the CC acquisition or new contributors like RB and Mac. Whatever or whomever came up with these new presentations, my thanks to them. Please give them a raise, although I thought RB was leaving TXG?
Mmm been looking forward to this for so long! When i Saw Drew in the monday q&a i just knew some cool videos was on the Way, and so far it has been awesome! Keep them coming please!
Excellent Ian, I view a lot of YT golf content and this lesson (and Part 1) is a top 1%er. In both videos you have married the technical lessons to the results from launch monitor performance. I now understand WHY it works the way it does. Much thanks and appreciation.
I’ve been watching UA-cam videos for like two years now searching for swing tips and I think this is honestly the best video I’ve watched. I can’t wait to hit the range and try this
I took this to the range, using just the side to side drill and gained 15 yards of carry with the driver within 30 minutes!! Mind blown. Thanks so much!!
Gees - this is my frustration these days; I've lost 20mtrs last 12 months and its just crept up without warning. looking forward to the entire series. Great team coming together.
Sounds like what David Lee talks about (Gravity Golf). I’m sure you guys know who he is but if you don’t check him out. The important thing about moving your legs is that the movement is born in the hams not the glutes.
So interesting watching this. I (and probably many) would love to have Ian's swing, interesting to see that there are things he doesn't like and wants to do better. I'll be trying some of this stuff at the range later, I've always felt very static at set up
These simple explanations and examples are EXACTLY what I needed to see. Tested the first instruction (pressure shifting) out at the range and immediately noticed an effortless 15-20 yard increase, especially with 5-6 irons. Normally hit 5 iron to the 175-180 target, hit quite a few passes the 200 yard target💪 Eagerly waiting for part 2. Great video!
The guy who created the RypStik has a predictive calculator and a lot of data showing your potential gains. Essentially if you are weaker and very flexible, your speed is generally created from your sequencing so your gains will have to be fitness related which means slower gains. If you are more like Ian (or myself) where you are fit/flexible enough and your sequence/technique is out of whack your gains can be huge. Mine got so bad I was swinging 105ish and after 6 weeks of training I hit a personal best of 124 last week and cruising golf course speed is 115-116. This stuff works but you have to put in the time and effort (pun intended)
Great Vid. Tried this, really frees up my swing 'feeling' and gained a few mph with my irons. Used to be very stiff & static, now feel more athelectic. Lost balance and direction, but will keep at it. More fun at the Range for sure. Thanks
Love my slingshot. It's a bit pricey but it's like 10 products in 1. It's speed sticks, a tempo trainer, and gives you the feel of hitting a ball without hitting a ball. I would gladly send back my gbox and speed sticks just for this one tool.
Love all videos from TXG, but this one really helped me game. I never used to waggle. Now with waggling and movement during the preshot routine. My tempo is perfect and I'm finding the center of the club face effortlessly
Around 18:47 when he starts talking about Tiger creating width, along with swaying the body back and forth, I try to imagine this, but not moving the club head so much. Suddenly, I start thinking why Matt Wolfe does that initial pivot motion. Maybe it’s to get the body sway front before doing the back sway, which helps create that body shift.
Funny. Most of us would love your swing Ian (and the results) but this video emphasises the limitations of an overly controlled swing - something you've alluded to before. I couldn't help but grimace watching a control-freak struggling to 'let it go'. It looked like you genuinely thought something was going to break 🤭. Kudos for leaping so far outside your comfort zone. Thanks Drew for sharing. This is the most direct and easy to understand guide to developing speed I've seen. I'll be 'playing along' with what you have Ian doing, to see if I can pick up a few mph too. If I can pick up an instant 5mph, I'll be able hit my driver as far as you ... hit your 7 iron 😂
I may have missed it, but which LAGP iron shaft is Drew playing? I don’t swing as hard as him (125mph driver and 101mph 6i) but seeing significant droop with my PX LS 6.5’s, and def get floaters into the wind. Would love to look at some options
Iain, Drew THANK YOU for this video! Have just been practicing the first part of the drill and my driver swing speed has gone from Ave 96 mph to Ave 103 peaked at 105. Amazing! Like Iain I am very static over the ball when I start my backswing. Adding in this dynamic move makes a big difference. Have only hit into net, keen to take to range then course next. If this only increases my ‘gaming’ swing by a few mph that’s all good with me. As a 51yrd old 5ft 8 guy I’ll take any gains! 👍🙏🏻🏌️♂️
This is super useful and helps to explain why I can get much higher speeds during a Dr. Kwon "step and swing" drill than from a static start. It would be even more helpful if you then took an "average" golfer and walked them through using Drew's drills.
You can watch Dr. Kwons YT Channel. He shows before and after results with his average students and shows off his process for adding more flow in the swing.
I’ve taken some lessons from a Leadbetter taught instructor. I really related to those wrist angles and trying to control all the aspects of the swing. Looking forward to trying to implement some of this video as I’ve lost distance and just don’t feel like an athlete at all on the course.
The pga tour pro outlier for swing speed I often think about is Xander Schauffele. the guy is just 5'8 and has such a slow steady backswing but bombs it
I was inspired by the video and tried this on my home GC3 and it actually worked really well. The more "athletic" setup makes a solid difference. Once it was likened to a badminton stance it clicked and made total sense. Thanks guys!
This was a great help. I feel like I have gained speed and have been hitting the ball more consistent. Also feel like I gain more distance... Thank you to Ian and Drew!!!!!
Tried this at the range today. Definitely added some speed but was messing with my tempo & timing for sure. Maybe added 10 yards to my 6 iron after a session moving from 175 to 185 if hit right. Not hitting a lot right and still ending up around 175 on my misses. Interesting idea. Agreed driver is where it will make all the difference.
It starts with understanding how the brain and body work together. All complex chain action human movement is subconscious, initiated by ONE intention. Change any link within the chain action the entire chain action is different and the intention has to change. .
This is something I’m really struggling with. Low single digit handicap, but never had speed training. With age, losing some speed and now wanting to train. This video is everything I’ve been wanting to find. Awesome work! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Reminds me of the book, Anatomy of Greatness by Brandel Chamblee where he talks about some of the great players having a forward press or right knee moving in to start the swing.
Brilliant stuff it definitely makes a difference takes a lot of work to implement for fear of been out of control but I am seeing the results in my driver already with up to 15 yards gains on pure strikes. I am excited now to move this to my irons as the next steps
Great vid Guys👍 I was alerted to the benefits of correct sequencing by Marcus Bell of ZEN Golf Mechanics and his teaching is very similar to what Drew was getting Ian to do. I suppose that it's pretty obvious that more velocity in the backswing results in more velocity+ in the downswing. PS David Leadbetter has a lot to answer for!
@@Omnis2 In fairness, I do believe Ian has said he’s 5’10”. Roughly average for North American male. I’m guessing Drew is 6’3. Not huge but substantially taller and broader shoulder than Ian. I’m guessing there’s a hood 50lb difference between the 2. Remember though JT is one of the longest hitters on Tour and I’d say he’s no taller and maybe a few pounds lighter than Ian.
Oooh how I love content of this nature. Lots of great ideas and techniques for us all to consider implanting into our golf swing. Just keep in mind: it will take some time and you will be "out of your element" when doing such things. Hence, Ians comment: this is "not comfortable..."
As a 80 yr old golfer can you do anything to increase ball distance with driver- I am using Taylor Made M4 with with soft tip Aldila $100.00 shaft -A- Flex Can not seem to get Height anymore
Ian, I struggled with sequencing ( Shawn Clement's Kinetic Chain ) and wondered why I would self destruct knowing intellectually what needed to happen. Like throwing a frisbee, or skipping a stone on water. My success relative to my age and general fitness is absolutely linked to mental belief that the golfing task is to swing with ball-grass-dirt intent (irons) through an intermediate point to a distant target. Ball as target is so inconsistent and the sequencing dies at the ball. Don't you feel that when you are on task the power just shows up..effortless and in sequence?
I don’t think people that are “still” at address are necessarily frozen. I probably fall into the still category but I am very calm and relaxed. It’s just that when I started, being still at address was normal. We called it being stable. To me seeing a person sway and waggle makes them look nervous and tense. But if it helps the swing I’m fine with changing.

I really love this video. As someone who shaped my swing in the 90's, I could identify with Ian and his swing feels. Great to watch, thanks.
This video is great. The fact that you gained 6 mph of club head speed is remarkable.
Every time I watch Ian in the spotlight I like and respect him so much more. Excellent content thank you for sharing.
No one else does videos like this at least that I've seen. Kudos guys. Well done. I'll say it again, you should be at 1M subscriptions.
Love drew on the channel! By far my favorite episode since watching matty boy on the channel! Keep up the great work guys!
Ian asking questions before his first loose swing like he’s afraid of taking the first steps at a salsa lesson, just go for it big dawg!
Literally my favourite video on UA-cam ATM 🙌
Amazing lesson. Need more of these.
