I saw a documentary in which Neil said it took about 45 minutes to write Sweet Caroline. He came across as such a nice man. He said he was a 1970s/80s star, now faded, when he was asked to do Glastonbury. And something like “Who knew me now? I walked on stage to see 100,000 faces smiling back at me and they knew the words to all my songs.”
There's something about this song. Everyone has a story. Mine is on the subway with my brother and some friends going back from a Springsteen concert in New York. It was quiet...my brother started humming, "Was in the spring..." Our whole car was shouting the song before the end of the first verse. It's just...it's just a thing. :-)
Neil was singing Sweet Caroline here in 1969, the year he wrote the song. The part where the audience came in with So Good, So Good, So Good, did not start to happen until years later, when Neil went on more tours. The song was about his then-wife Marcia (divorced in 1994), but he needed a three-syllable name to fit the melody. Diamond said that a magazine cover photo of Caroline Kennedy as a young child on a horse with her parents, created an image in his mind, and the rest of the song came together.

Niel Diamond is one of the greatest songwriters ever. He's written #1 songs for so many people, from the Monkees to Anne Murray. He didn't feel confident enough in his own voice when he was young. Then, after a successful writing career, one day he decided to share his own voice. Here's a couple that have probably been requested already, "Coming to America" and "Turn on Your Heart Light." That second song was inspired by the movie "E.T."

I love Neil version of his song, best version for me is from his concert HOT AUGUST NIGHT from Hollywood. Elvis also included sweet Caroline into his live shows, it's a real crowd pleaser. Definitely worth your time to react to
A lifetime ago I had the weekend before getting back to Ft. Benning. So I did a little bar hopping in Atlanta. I settled into one bar with a beer. A few minutes later this song started up. Everyone in the place erupted singing along. Laughing and smiling, it was amazing to me. A great memory every time I hear this.
I was watching Game #7 of the 1971 World Series--and the organist in Baltimore was playing this song between innings. So it has a history at ballparks before the Red Sox made it a fixture at Fenway Park.
This video was designed like a 1970s variety show - where you'd often get the singer/guitarist performing live over a pre-recorded band backing. Such a deep, sweet voice, and so many great songs. "Crackling Rosie" and "Crunchy Granola Suite" are other gems, and one which I sometimes sing (and fail to do justice to) at my own gigs, "Holly Holy", is a must.
That's what I was thinking, too -- although sometimes, the band was live as well, but they were either in a separate section off to the side of the stage and the camera angles would be chosen to keep them out of frame, or they were behind a dark gauze stage curtain and the stage was lit such that you couldn't see them. (Similar to the way a 2-way mirror works; the key to the effect in both cases is that one side is brightly lit and the other side is kept darkened; people on the darkened side can see through to the lighter side, but people on the brightly-lit side can't see through to the darkened side.)
There is so much to pick from with Neil. Love on the rocks, from the Jazz Singer. Duet with Streisand. The best live album he did was hot august nights. So much to pick from, enjoy your journey.
Jamel AKA Jamal I too like to see a live recording. Want to see a singer's expression too. For every song I downloaded, I make sure that I look for a Soul Train video to also download.
I've read, from multiple sources, that "Caroline" is Caroline Kennedy. This song was released in 1969, Diamond was approximately 28, and Caroline Kennedy was about 12. That made the song just a little weird for me. Fortunately, I like creepy songs. "Vehicle", from Ides of March, is another good creepy song. So is "Every Breath You Take ", from Sting. Sting was actually appalled that people thought the song was a sweet love song.
@@gotham61 In and of itself, there is nothing wrong with writing a song and dedicating to someone. But, it's not THAT the song was dedicated to Ms. Kennedy that's concerning; it's the lyrical content that was dedicated to a 12 year old. Those lyrics imply some intimate behavior, which would be inappropriate for a girl that age, regardless of how well known she may or may not be. That's just a little on the creepy side. In fairness to Mr. Diamond, the perceived creepiness may not have occurred to him. He may have taken a whim to offer the dedication, for some inexplicable reason, without giving it any deep consideration. I don't know. I DO know that I am far from the only one who sees a level of creepiness in it.
There are videos on UA-cam of impromptu Singing at malls and in outside parks of sweet Caroline. There's an old movie called the jazz singer. It's stars Neil diamond who is a cantor For A number of generations before him who were cantors .. It's the families business.and wants to leave that behind to pursue his own music, jazz. A cantor sings everything that the rabbi has just read from the Torah. Coming to America or America is another really good Neil diamond song. I saw him at Fenway, (after he took a "red eye flight" to sing this live) at that first game after the Boston Marathon bombing. To all of us who did not know until 24 hours earlier that this game would even be played...It meant ALOT. Music can heal.

I grew up listening to this great artist. He was a phenomenal song write, singer, and performer! I pray for a cure for Parkinson’s disease! Love ya, Neil! ❤️
Neil Diamond. What an artist. Besides other hits, he wrote "I'm a Believer" and "A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You" for The Monkees. Ever since that movie came out when I hear this song, I picture Jimmy Fallon as that obsessed Red Sox fan.
The "So goo, so good, so good" chant originated with the fans at Fenway Park, where this song is played at the 7th inning stretch. It is said that the song was written for Caroline Kennedy, and those Massachusetts folks love their Kennedys.
After the Boston Marathon bombing, Neil surprised Boston by unexpectedly showing up at Fenway and sang this song. The city was still in shock and hurting and here he had the entire stadium swaying and singing and crying together. Very generous of him to help Boston.
The Wave at Kinnick in Iowa City!! Not music but it is a BIG newer tradition! After the 1st quarter of the football games EVERYONE in the stadium turns towards the Stead Children’s Hospital and WAVES!!! it’s humbling and sweet
The one that got me hooked on Neil Diamond was, Coming To America, and one of his best songs also Forever In Blue Jeans, Sweet Caroline. Again a simple reminder to react to The Moody Blues, Hey, Jamel, check this band out, I know you have done a reaction to other songs, from this band this us early Moody Blues and this song is the first song on this Album. This song is called: In The Beginning. When I first heard that opening, I didn't at first listen to the rest of the album I just started the first song, over and over and over again. I was 13 or 14 at the time. Then after I got what I needed for that first intro I went on to the rest of the album. All I am gonna say it get ready, long intro, and long outro, the words will make you think. Get ready for.........hmm you'll find out. ua-cam.com/video/uuNGVxw33tA/v-deo.html

The inspiration for Sweet Caroline was Caroline Kennedy. The song was released in 1969, but he never told who it was about until 2007 (on a talk show). I'm not sure who made up the story about his wife, but I saw the interview and it's all over the internet. He told a sweet story about seeing her with a horse. She was asked about it later and told about all her friends teasing her. I understand that he sang it for her on her 50th birthday. Keep listening to Neil Diamond - He has sold over 100 million records. I have seen him twice in 1976 and again 1in 1992 he's an awesome performer. I understand that he has retired from performing now due to health problems.

You should hear him sing "hands, washing hands" lol
That was Ray Stevens or Frank Zappa. I'm Rolling lol 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

that's the covid version
A lifetime ago I had the weekend before getting back to Ft. Benning. So I did a little bar hopping in Atlanta. I settled into one bar with a beer. A few minutes later this song started up. Everyone in the place erupted singing along. Laughing and smiling, it was amazing to me. A great memory every time I hear this.
I love this song even if the Red Sox tried make me hate it.
Hahahaaahaa!
Ryan García, another Yankee fan by chance?
Red Sox!!!
I was watching Game #7 of the 1971 World Series--and the organist in Baltimore was playing this song between innings. So it has a history at ballparks before the Red Sox made it a fixture at Fenway Park.
You know you love how we sing it, Yankee Fan... OH oh oh.
Now you know why so many people still love Neil Diamond. He was infectious! Couldn't help but love him, his music and his style.
Should watch one later when he fills a big venue and everyone sings along, have seen him a couple of times and it is fun to see.
When you are there in person with him singing and you sing after, there is nothing in the world like it!
Billy Joel, Harry Chapin, and Neil Diamond: all great storytellers.
YASS!!!
There is so much to pick from with Neil. Love on the rocks, from the Jazz Singer. Duet with Streisand. The best live album he did was hot august nights. So much to pick from, enjoy your journey.
Every time I hear this song I go right to Fenway and picture all of us Red Sox fans singing along!! It’s our anthem!!
A Friend of the Kennedy Family the Song is not About her ..... Just Dedicated to her! ..... Just as "Cracklin' Rosie" is Dedicated to Rose Kennedy!
When Neil Diamond was being honored at the Kennedy Center Honors, Caroline Kennedy came out on stage for the final chorus. A pretty special moment.
Why can't someone write a song dedicated to a young girl who was quite famous at the time, without being labeled as some kind of perv?
Yes I had always heard it was dedicated to her as well. Not creepy
I'm really glad you have done some reactions on Neil diamond.
Check out his performance of "Dry Your Eyes" with The Band from The Last Waltz.
Yeah that was pretty special
Dry Your Eyes. Can't suggest that enough.
My favourite Neil Diamond song. “I’m only gonna do one song, but I’m gonna do it good”. I love The Last Waltz.
LOVE NEIL DIAMOND ! I WAS A KID IN THE SIXTIES BUT I REMEMBER THIS SONG SO WELL ! PEOPLE HAD THEIR TRANSITOR RADIOS PLAYING AND IT WAS SUCH A GOOD TIME TO GROW UP IN ! 🌷🌻🌷
Fantastic song selection and excellent, excellent reaction by you! We really loved Neil Diamond back in the day, for sure. Your knowledge and appreciation of music really adds to these retro reactions. And, by the way, I absolutely love your studio setup! It adds so much to the ambiance of your reactions. Great job! Here's to your next one. 🙏🙏🙏
(Try out "Song Sung Blue" also by Neil Diamond)
This is the song they play at Steelers games during the break between the 3rd & 4th quarter.
They've been playing it Penn State for almost 20 years. Although, they may have replaced it with Living On A Prayer.
Also at Red Sox games at Fenway
"I Am I Said".... my personal favorite Neil Diamond song. I took my mother to see him in concert during the 80s. He was her favorite artist. 🥰
Do “Set Adrift of Memory Bliss” by PM Dawn
Yaaaaaas!!!!!
Classic
Omg..love love love "I'd die without you" Paper Doll, basically everything..Shame how it all turned out. RIP Prince Be...
I was fortunate enough to see Neil 5 times, he never disappointed me! Great singer and definitely related to the crowd at his concerts. So good, so good!
Everyone always reacts to the 2 songs that I consider not his best. Try Brother Loves Traveling Salvation Show, Holly Holy, Morningside America, I am I said.,
Morningside is incredible!
I saw him at Fenway, (after he took a "red eye flight" to sing this live) at that first game after the Boston Marathon bombing. To all of us who did not know until 24 hours earlier that this game would even be played...It meant ALOT. Music can heal.
Neil Diamond and Aaron Neville are both 80! They just had their birthday yesterday I believe. RIP Hank Aaron.
I’ve seen him in concert 4 times over 30+ years.. He’s one of the best in-person entertainers.. ever! Everyone knows all the words to all of his songs - so much fun!!! His change in health stopped him in the past ~2 yrs or so. Amazing talent.. written SO many hits. Thanks for sharing!
A favorite of mine is Linda Ronstadt singing, “Different Drum” when she was in the group, “The Stone Poneys” Check it out!
Such a great storyteller and a warm, beautiful voice. His voice matches with Karen Carpenter's voice.
The Cars Moving in Stereo when Benjamin Orr was singing the lead, You know the song because of the movie!!!!
This songs is played at the 7th inning of every single Red Sox game. This is also a karaoke staple as it allows participation from the audience.
Great. Some Neil. I hear he is suffering from Parkinsons. May i pretty please request Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show?
That was one of his earliest shows...the so good, so good, so good, was after he was much more popular.
Do Time Stand Still, Bastille Day, and Force Ten!!! ALL BY RUSH
All great songs. Add Cygnus X-1 books 1&2 to that
Neil looks so young and shy in this. You should see him perform "America" at the end of "The Jazz Singer;" he's quite the virtuoso in that.
i always loved that movie just to see that ending lol
There is no “so good, so good” in the actual song. It’s something fans in ballparks and arenas have added.
Neil Diamond is an incredibly talented singer/songwriter and a hit-making machine. He has so many great songs that it would likely take you months just to scratch the surface of his catalog. Here are a few you should definitely check out sooner than the rest -
Brother Love's Travelling Salvation Show
Solitary Man
Shilo
Cracklin' Rosie
Song Sung Blue
I Am...I Said
Cherry, Cherry
“Solitary Man”, Neil Diamond

This song at Fenway Park. Rain or shine, win or loss is there anything better in sports? If there is it escapes me
After the Boston Marathon bombing, Neil surprised Boston by unexpectedly showing up at Fenway and sang this song.
@@David_Theisen Yes that is a wonderful new tradition. I have heard about it and seen news stories about it before
@@kateritter5765
We could use those feelings and vibes right now!!
I grew up in Vegas listening to him and his music
The one that got me hooked on Neil Diamond was, Coming To America, and one of his best songs also Forever In Blue Jeans, Sweet Caroline.
Again a simple reminder to react to The Moody Blues,
Hey, Jamel, check this band out, I know you have done a reaction to other songs, from this band this us early Moody Blues and this song is the first song on this Album.
This song is called:
In The Beginning.

Always classy, never flashy. His concerts were amazing!
The “so good so good” thing happened later in this songs trajectory. Don’t remember hearing in its early renditions.
I’ve never heard it in his recordings, but I haven’t listened to any later ones.
I don't think it's from Neil at all, sound awful to me, Neil is classy and someone singing that isn't. Must be from a cover
That’s added by drunk people at weddings
@Unluckiest Fisherman
Yep I'll run with that suggestion lol
Red Sox fans...ugh.
This recording was done in the UK for TV special.
If you have the time, check out the movie "The Jazz Singer" which he starred in.
I never gave Neil Diamond a second look, until I watched that movie on HBO in my teens. Instant fan.
While what's- his- name was building his wall, listening to America, brought tears to my eyes.
Oh yes, The Music Man Neil Diamond! What a performer. Seen him 1974 at the ASU Activity Center, what a treat.
THIS IS KARAOKE SONG FOR SURE SOME PEOPLE JUST CAN'T HELP THAT CHORUS LOL SING EVERYBODY "SWEET ............. AIR TRUMPET HANDS LOL THANKS JAMEL_AKA_JAMAL ✌& LO💚E
Arlo Guthrie/ City Of New Orleans
Ted Nugent: Fred Bear the Song
Arlo Guthrie - Alice's Restaurant
I play both the Arlo Guthrie songs :)
I pushed hard for Alice's Restaurant around Thanksgiving.
I went to a Neil Diamond concert 25 years ago.. He played for over an hour and you could sing along to EVERY SONG.
Sox fans added "So Good!" and "Bom, Bom, Bom!" They've been playing it during the middle of the 8th inning at Fenway Park since 2002.
Niel is in a concert in England in this video, he actually sang some good songs!
I would like to see your reaction to John Fogerty's New Song "Weeping in the promised land" - By the way John is the lead singer and song writer for CCR - Creedence Clearwater Revival
You heard the Bee Gees before. A powerful song of theirs is "to love somebody." A big song back in the day.
Good to hear some Neil Diamond! Try his song Brooklyn Roads! You’re doing a great job btw!
I forgot this one. Yes! Jamal would love those lyrics!
Happy Birthday to the #thegreatestsingersongwriterofalltime!!! Put your hands together for the One and Only #neildiamond
So now, do "Red, Red Wine" by Neil Diamond, since it was *his* and not Bob Marley's in the first place!! :D
You'll be a Woman Soon" Neil Diamond was such a great entertainer.I miss this kind 🎶 music.thanku for playing him
did not know this was about Caroline Kennedy.Well then this creepy. She was too young.
Saludos jamel desde tijuana frontera con california podrias reaccionar a luis antonio lopez "el mimoso"con la cancion en esta vida no se puso con mariachi te gustara
Neil keep his Band together for years! When he recorded they were his band. This way all stage shows sounded true !👍🏼😎
