"Sweet Caroline" was adopted by the Boston Red Sox baseball team about 20 years ago. It is played (and sung by fans) at every home game and many away games, too!
@@bobpat56 Thank you. I haven’t been to a Red Sox game in many many years, but my father took us to at least one game every summer. It’s a fond memory.
At every concert..three hours of Neil Diamond magic…no opening acts,no intermissions! Nobody sits, everyone sings along…knowing every word…and Neil lives his audience as much as they love him!🔥❤️💎
My English friend died in 2020. She loved visiting me in past years, and she loved North Carolina and this song. Her family had this song played at her funeral.
I must confess, when Neil Diamond was at the height of his success, I thought I was just too cool to be a fan. I have since rearranged my thinking and recognize him for the great artist that he truly is. 🌺✌️
A few have mentioned this being played during the 7th inning stretch at Fenway Park during the Boston Red Sox games. I'm from south of Boston and have had the pleasure of joining in singing at Fenway Park and the whole crowd sings along. What a blast !
Sounds like this chorus is sung by sports fans all over the world. In the USA we sing it at the end of a winning game for our home team at a college football or basketball game.
PLEASE! Listen to more Neil Diamond. The man has an incredible voice and a large repertoire of great songs. One of my favorite artists hands down. I once saw him live and he sang for over 3hrs. What a talent.
Neil Diamond's song "Solitary Man" stung my heart during the years of teenage loneliness. But it gave a subtle reassurance. At least now I knew what I was [and still am].
Neil Diamond revealed that the inspiration for his famous song “Sweet Caroline” was a girlish Caroline Kennedy, the daughter of President Kennedy who was 12 when the song was originally released.
Just the title was inspired by Caroline Kennedy. The lyrics were about his wife. There's a 2014 Neil Diamond interview, on the Today show, on UA-cam. He explained; “It’s actually about my former wife, Marsha, but I couldn’t get Marsha into the 3 syllable name that I needed, so I had Caroline Kennedy’s name there, from years ago, in one of my books, and I tried “Sweet Car-o-line”, that works!”
My favorite Neal Diamond is his live duet with Barbara Streisand. Live at the Grammy Awards You Don't Bring Me Flowers Anymore. He has a smooth voice. Great reaction.
Neil Diamond transcends. Even as a teen in the 80s, I knew all his songs. I used to tease an older friend of mine gently for her crush on Neil Diamond, but I would always sing along when she'd put on an album. I never heard anyone ever diss Neil Diamond. Even the old punks, metal heads and new wavers knew all his songs and liked them.
7th inning stretch is before the home team comes up in that inning and everyone stands up and sings along with zNeil’s recording! If you are a Red Sox fan then I want to thank you for the 1986 series, being a NY METS fan.
I played trumpet in my high school band and we played this at EVERY football game for the 6 years I played! It was loved by all! People sang it in unison! Another good one is Holly Holy!
Unfortunately he's no longer able to tour but when he did he would sell out many days in a row at the venues he played. It's played at a number of sporting arenas. Lol ... You miss the so good, so good, so good being sung by the crowd!♥️♥️♥️
My mom was freshly divorced and life was so much better. Mom began listening to the pop/rock stations I would tune the radio onto, and she loved Neil Diamond, her name was Carol, and this became her song. This song will always remind me of her, good memories and good times, R.I.P. mama. p.s. Neil recorded Red Red Wine first. My brothers and I were quite puzzled by UB40's cover!
I guarantee if you start to play it in a crowd, everyone will join in. I was in the DC Metro a while ago and there were some buskers on the platform singing acapella. They started singing "Sweet Caroline" and very shortly there was an entire platform of people dressed in suits and ties singing right along with them. I wish I had captured it on video.
Huge sing-along song for Boston Red Sox fans! There are some great videos of Neil Diamond performing this song with crowd participation. Especially the video from Fenway Park where he sang this for the crowd. As you can imagine the crowd went wild! Boston strong!

I love his song "Shilo". It is the story of a girl, a childhood friend, as they grow up. He dreams of a life together with her, but she leaves him for the larger World saying she knows he'll understand. Neil Diamond writes a whole novel with very compact lyrics. It always leaves me a little weepy.
It amazes me that anyone these days has never heard this perennial classic! I love all of Neil’s songs, but my favorites, besides this one, are Play Me and He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother.
Just about every live sporting event in the U.S. plays Sweet Caroline, with everyone joining in, like you described. It's a fun, unifying experience for fans of all teams
We would visit my grandparents every summer on their farm in the Midwest. As we drove away they would stand outside their home and wave goodbye until our station wagon was only a speck and I would be waving too outside the back window. My big grandpa who had carried a newly birthed calf from a back pasture likes small basket the day before had tears on his face as he waved to me. This song was playing on our car radio...WHO Does Moines. I tear up everytime I hear it, grandpa lived to 95 years. He was the wisest and gentlest man. Thanks for playing this. I'm up and preparing for a biopsy this morn and this song calms my worry Great job 😊😊
One of my favorite singer songwriters spanning many decades. I had so many of his records. He had tons of hit songs. "Cherry, Cherry", "Kentucky Woman", "Red Red Wine", "Solitary Man", "Sweet Caroline", "Holly Holy", "Cracklin' Rosie", "Song Sung Blue", "Longfellow Serenade", "You Don't Bring Me Flowers". One of my favorites is "I Am, I Said" which is almost an autobiography of his life & fame. He wrote the song "I'm A Believer" which became a big hit for the Monkees in 1966. I was privileged to see him in concert twice. He was a great showman & his live performances were memorable.
If you haven't already, listen to his BROTHER LOVE'S TRAVELIN' SALVATION SHOW. That's my favorite of his songs. This is a favorite at our sports events too. BOM BOM BOM!
This song remarkable got revived because of Fenway Park and their beloved Red Sox fans back around the turn of the century….because of that many teams here and across the pond sing it as a battle cry to finish off the opposing team or use it as a rallying cry to come back from deficits….

That one really caught the public imagination, because of the sing along chorus, but Neil Diamond wrote a lot of brilliant stuff, try Crackling Rose, Holly Holy. I am I said, or Done too soon, all fantastic songs.
Unfortunately, Neil Diamond is always associated with this one song, while he has written so many other great songs. Try Solitary Man, Holly Holy, Brooklyn Roads, Soolaimon, Stones, Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show, Dry Your Eyes, America, Beautiful Noise or even later songs like Hell Yeah, Pretty Amazing Grace, Nothing But A Heartache, Delirious Love, etc.

Became Neil Diamond's signature song. H at one point. However as a musician, this is on the "most requested songs to the point where it becomes nauseating" list. Every one just wants to sing the Chorus, esp when drunk as hell. They sing "Sweet Caroline" on the third line of the Chorus because they don't even know the words, which is "I've been inclined." The original version here is fine, but not with the drunken crowds being idiots. They don't even know what their singing or what the song was originally about. It's like being in an musical insane asylum.
That chorus gets everyone no matter the age. Nobody can resist those horn blasts.

I live in Boston and I can confirm that the fans go crazy when we start singing it - now it’s only 35,000 and not 80,000 but it’s still quite a sound
@@jchampboston yes indeed. another Bostonian here. i concur.
I’m also a greater Bostonian but I don’t get the connection between this song and the Red Sox 🤷🏻♀️. Can someone explain?
The song was first played for the birthday of a field staffer's daughter, Caroline. The Red Sox won and the tune became a good luck charm.

I love how each stadium has "their" song. At AmFam (formerly Miller) Park, the fans sing the Beer Barrel Polka.
