From the man himself "This song was written about a revival meeting I was at in Jackson, Mississippi. I went there because I was curious, and also because I was a college kid who had all the answers - no one was going to teach me anything and I could lay a few answers on them. I sat in the back of this tent meeting and I got really caught up in the music - clapping, the singing - tremendously exciting. After a while I felt something about the people - there was a tremendous yearning, looking for answers. Trying to ease a very hard burden of very rough lives. After a while the music stopped and a preacher walked out. I remember thinking that all the education I had, all the books, all the words, all the learning I went through at college didn't mean anything to these people, I had nothing for them. So I found myself pulling for this man who was about to give them something that I couldn't even begin to give them."

A side story - he used to have his concerts at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles which is below the Griffith Observatory and nestled in the hills and trees. His concerts always sold out, and whether people missed out on the tickets or couldn’t afford them, they would climb into the trees on the outskirts so they could see the show. They were known as the tree people and they’re usually shooed away by patrol but he always said he wouldn’t play unless the tree people were allowed to stay. What a guy!
He's a mensch! “I saw the announcement that the bomber had been caught and the game would go on. The more I thought about it, the more I just knew I had to be there,” Diamond told Red Sox historian Gordon Edes. “It was the night before the game. We were at home in Los Angeles and I told my wife Katie that we needed to go. “At 4 a.m., we boarded a plane to Boston with no real plan other than to make our way to Fenway. No one was aware we were coming, but it felt so right that neither my wife nor I questioned it. We landed in Boston a little more than an hour before the game started.” “There was no band or music prepared for my appearance. I didn?t really have a plan. They handed me a microphone, I walked out on the field between home plate and first base and was careful not to step on the line,” Diamond said. “I sang along to the recorded version of the song that they usually use, so there were actually two Neil Diamond?s singing, the 1969 Neil and the 2013 Neil. I was just singing along with everyone else.” It’s become something he himself never will forget, either. “It was a very powerful moment with the audience joining in as one. There was a feeling of relief, unity, strength and love. I saw people in tears, people hugging. It was a moment that I will never forget,” Diamond said. “This day is among the most memorable of my career, and it was totally unplanned and unprepared. Maybe that?s where God came into the picture and helped it all come together in such a beautiful and spontaneous way.”
Totally why I’m here. My father wasn’t much into music but he loved Neil Diamond. He passed away just last month and I’ve been listening to ND a bit lately. I love this reaction video. Jamal always brightens my day 😎
No lie; I used to CRUSH this song in karaoke bars. This one AND “Holly Holy.” These are songs you just get caught up in singing, and when you feel it, you’re flying. Doesn’t matter if you’re good or you suck; you’re just riding a wave.
Probably went to half a dozen Neil Diamond concerts with my mother. She loved him and so did I. This has always been my favorite Neil Diamond song. Thanks for the reaction.
I get religion every time I hear this song. When I was a kid, every summer the local community churches held revival services. I absolutely loved it when the "black Baptist" church held the services..always a celebration rather than a "brow beating". To me, this was and is what praising God should be.
Shortly after the Aurora shootings, we went to his concert - he sang this as his encore while his staff passed the hat for the victims. it was really moving.
So did my father in law. Every Christmas, my husband tells the story of how Pop would play Neil Diamond on the turntable and just lay on the sofa, with a smooth drink, and let that good music play while the kids played with their Christmas gifts. Just wish I could listen to Neil with Pop. I miss him and Mama so much. ❤ Hello Again brings out the water wells for us because it's the first song that came on the car radio after we got the news and were on way to say good-bye to Pop.
It sounds like Brother Neil has been to a tent revival or two and that he listened to the evangelist while he was there, lol. My older sister used to wear this song out on her turntable, I can still hear my momma yelling "Carol turn that crap down" 😅. 🙏👏👍✌️
My grandma told about old time tent revival meetings and it would have brought people in from all around. Love this and thinking about grandma. Smiles.

Hello, Jamel, Great Neil Diamond songs are Hello Again, Amazing Love Song, and Song Sung Blue!!!! You will love it!!!! Thank you for all the Amazing Music!!!!
Oh Wow! Hallelujah! I forgot about that song! I was a teenager when Neil put this out. It is one of those songs that just gets you up on your feet. Does a heart good to just listen or sing along. Thank you sir!

But I didn't care what they said, Neil Diamond was in my soul by then. Now a days those same people say they love his music. But I know who stayed loyal and I can say that I was loyal at the start. There is not enough that can be said about Neil Diamond. He is an absolute icon among American singers/songwriters. Has sold over 130 million records, enjoyed over 35 Top 40 hits and 10 #1 hits. He is in the Songwriters HOF, Rock & Roll HOF; Kennedy Centers Award; Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, and has his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The song, I'm a Believer, which he wrote but the group "The Monkees" released as a single (before he did and with his approval) went Gold in 2 days and became the 1966 Song of The Year. In 2019 his most notable song, Sweet Caroline, was selected by The Library of Congress for preservationinto the National Recording Registry due to its long term popularity (50 yrs) and its cultural/historical significance. He retired from toring in 2018 due to Alzhiemers, but has done made surprise appearances at some fund-raising events, special ceremonies. Incredibly talented.

Cliff, besides Jamal's review of this classic song....which is awesome.... your reference to Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, probably the WORST movie EVER... probably ONLY made because the actors (whom I won't give free ads to), have more money than the USA budget and can afford to produce crap.
