Very enjoyable video and I'm so impressed with your ability to clear these games so fast. I'm much more of a slow learner lol. I wasn't sure about the new art style, but Shmupjunkie and you have convinced me. About the visual inspiration: Deathsmiles definitely took a lot of that from the original Cotton, but I have no doubt that BEEP/Siesta kind of returned the favor and played up the similarities even more.
Cool I just discovered this channel few days ago. The only shmup I managed to 1cc so far is Cosmo Gang on SFC. Nobody talk about this game which is really great.
A very "Success"ful run. The Halloween aesthetic is indeed from the original, it's style is apparently one of the reasons they wanted to do "Reboot!" (Gameplaywise The x68k version, as the arcade original had terrible balancing issues after stage 3) They went to ridiculous extremes even just to recreate some CRT dependent effects with a modern screen It's also the first Witch girl based shooting game ever, beating "Magical Chase" by about 3 months. As to the crazy score mechanics they developed for the arrange, its absolutely insane. I've got a handy little manual and have no idea where to start with describing it. I can see why finding an extensive guide to scoring in this game online is rather difficult (The lack of a practice mode certainly doesn't help its chances of being picked up as a major draw for score unfortunately) So I'll just mention the fun most noticeable stuff Assuming anyone can figure out where good opportunities to Jewel fever are. First those Black Crystals he mention: Their value goes up with each successive Black Crystal. Starting at 10,000 then doubling each level up to 320,000. if you miss one or break one the value falls back to 10,000 Second: the 2nd stage boss regenerates, and furthermore the speed he regenerates is based on game rank. So you can milk the Heck out of him. Third: The stage 3 boss has some anti milking enemies called Kira bats that app try and abuse her swarm for points. Though the particularly skilled can presumably find a way to get even more points out of them with gold timing. Fourth: you can Jewel fever the 4th bosses bubbles That's actually all the interesting stuff in the stages that wouldn't seem too obvious, you can also get 68,000 points for the pretty stones fairys drop. You also get points for using your barrier, potentially to a ridiculous extent.
Off topic, but are the Cotton games on Steam(Reboot, Saturn, Rock n' Roll) any good? Thinking of getting them but the Steam reviews are a bit worrisome.
I gotta get this game some time soon! I never played Cotton as much but I always liked the aesthetics and this reboot delivers in the visual department. I'd love to see a Parodius or Twinbee have updated graphics like this!.. But possibility low because Konami :/
Cotton first appeared on the Sega system 16 board and the game was ported to several home systems but none of them have actually been a direct arcade port. at the time the sharp x6000 was the best home version while the pc engine had the best music.
I can confirm the flipgrip just doesn't fully realize the vision, and I've gone further to get various 3rd party joycons, binbok, KDD, etc. and just gave up. Now I mount my switch using a gooseneck to my bedpost or desk and use a saturn controller via OTG cable... I can also confirm that the hori split pad pro DPAD is 98% good but for some reason I have to hit really hard to get a "right" input vs the rest of the dpad... so maybe I'll try getting that other hori joycon on the left like you do :)
It is just so much fun, nice mechanics and a great game to just pick up and play. Clearly a labour of love from BEEP. Only 3 frames of lag on Switch is incredible. Btw, Rock'n'roll is great as well (but I think I prefer Reboot, actually).
For me this is a wait for the western release. It’s a compete game and all but I imagine by the time it reaches west hopefully it gets updates to iron out some kinks. The reboot also has the x68000 version right?
@@TheElectricUnderground Really enjoyed this video, thanks for showing me how to play it lol. You should play the X68000 version and comment on that one as well. :P
I currently only play shmups on Steam and x360, but can't decide whether to start buying for PS5(PS4) or Switch. Cotton was on sale yesterday so I ended up getting both hahaha. I really need to make up my mind.
I've been thinking if Shumps were mixed with other genres, especially RPGs and platform, could make them more attractive to casual players, since devs need to make that money (bruh). And, in order to satisfy the old community as well, devs could simply make harder difficulties for them, but having in mind the main goal is to catch that casual audience to build a more -addicted- diverse fan base.
Yeah I do think something is there, but I think the design needs to be something innovative that we've never seen before. I think about this a lot though ha.
Yeah... the PS4 version... where is it? I scoured the Playstation Store under "new games", "shooters", "shoot em ups", and put in every name I could think of for this game in the "search" engine including "Cotton Reboot" and "Fantastic Night Dreams Cotton Reboot"... and nothing. Where the hell is it?
@@TheElectricUnderground How do I access the Japanese shop? Will the Japanese shop be in English and will the game be in English? And how do I pay for it in the Japanese shop?

The FREAKING MULTIPLIERS MAN
The curtain of death!
Appreciate you explaining the mechanics throughout, just downloaded it and was pretty confused.

Yep that s the winning combo. I have yet to find anything that comes to being as good
Just get a little hori stand and an arcade stick
I heard nothing about this, the last I heard of this series was a Japanese SNES game. Loved that game!
For Switch I got a Brook converter to hook up an arcade stick. I do not know if it adds lag.
It does, I tested it back in the day

I bought a HORI mini fighting stick for the Switch a few weeks back. Works well.
