I love metal slug, when I was a kid I used to play it almost everyday after school at a movie rental store next to my house that had the neogeo cab, I actually manage to get a 1cc clear with 1 quarter, never forgot that moment, I was like 11 years old.
Nice run on MS1! Your routing is a little different and more aggressive than mine since I tend to rescue the POWs. IDK about you but I LUV me the shotty just to for the spectacle of making things go BOOM!
FPGA emulation, or more exactly reproduction, is incredibly exciting. It really is the future for preserving all those arcade games. It's just going to keep getting better!
Great timing as I finally got a MisTer for myself just this week. Have yet to open and set it up, but I'm looking forward to recording a lot of my footage using it for older games vs Retroarch, for the games I don't have actual copies of. My Retroarch performance is always middling/hit and miss so hoping the MisTer gives me less trouble. And I can play it on my CRT while recording to the capture card. You're right about the Slug games having a lot of hardware slowdown. Was always just part of the games and I got used to them, although I never attempted to 1CC or no death them. The one that was just way too much was Part 2, to the point where it kind of ruins the game. They fixed it with X, but then changed the levels around to where it was still great, but didn't flow as well as the original for me. I played it more anyway as the slowdown in part 2 was over the top. I think there is a hack that fixed it now, so we get the best of both worlds. I am one that personally liked the extra variety the aliens, zombies etc added to the next two games. The original part 2 was the perfect reveal where you didn't expect it, so it was a cool surprise the first time I ever played. I know which video I can come back to now if I ever want to master this series.
Guess what ... I just got the 1cc in metal slug 2 on shmuparch last night, the game is straight-up brutal took me 13 hours and soooo many attempts to finally get the 1cc.
Love MiSTer. I'm so excited by nullobject's development of Dodonpachi on the MiSTer. It's still got a way to go, but the more support and awareness to his cause the closer we might get to having more shmup development on the MiSTer.
Yay! MiSTer coverage! I didn't quite get it. Is it the Mister FPGA dropping inputs (due to the imperfect core) or the game that's also on the original hardware?
Completely out of topic, but i wanted to ask you whether you know about the ZAS shmup on the game boy. It's a very tiny shmup, being on the game boy, but is really well crafted, and I thought you might find it interesting if you don't already know a bout it.
If a Metal Slug Port is bad, you can not even correctly rapidfire with a rapidfire controller. I always had the impression that no emulation came close to the good old neoragex. This might not be the most accurate, but at least it felt very close to the arcade. I can 1cc both with ease, but i struggle with the vaious ports. There is also kind of a pretty accurate way to compare the basic input lag for neogeo emulation, wich is getting one of the few snk windows ports from the 90s. These are damn spot on in therms of the feel. I don't know if the install is easy, but i use them in windows10 up to this day.
From what I understand, the input lag in Metal Slug Anthology (PS2) is worse in the case of the first title (possibly the second one as well). The difference in input lagness between MS 1 and X on that port is huge. Suppose it has to do with the system they run on. Anyway, top content as always
Does the Neo Geo core on MiSTer not have turbo? I know that the SNES & Genesis have CPU “turbo” which pretty much eliminates “slowdown” on those cores.
Great and informative run! It's interesting that you recommend Shmuparch over the Mister for this game (or at least you say it might be an even better experience). Emulation is especially great when it fixes flaws with the original, imho (I know purists will hate this, but I'm sure the developers would have wanted all your bullets to fire :D). Can you do 2X CPU and 3 frames of runahead on a RaspberryPi 4 or you need a beefy PC for that?
@@TheElectricUnderground sorry i feel like the original lag is part of the experience. The same reason i don't use turbo, was not possible on original setups. Thanks for the suggestion though
@@machineheadslumpMame has more input lag than the original hardware. All emulators have some degree of lag, with FB Neo you can work around this with run ahead to equal or even improve on the original hardware's input lag. There's still a display lag issue though depending on the screen you use
@@machineheadslump Well the FB Neo retroarch core accurately emulates the slowdown too, and with run ahead you can play the game more like it was on original hardware
It s all default settings , I could t find a way to access the dip switch settings on the neo geo core. There s a boot option for it but the game screen goes blank.

Nice run too.

20 years later and NOW I'm just learning you can throw grenades from the slugs????
WTF
Ha yeah the secret tech!
Metal slug is king of video games
Yay! MiSTer coverage!
I didn't quite get it. Is it the Mister FPGA dropping inputs (due to the imperfect core) or the game that's also on the original hardware?
The game itself due to the limitations of the neo geo hardware. So the mister is being accurate to the flaws of the og hardware ha
Completely out of topic, but i wanted to ask you whether you know about the ZAS shmup on the game boy. It's a very tiny shmup, being on the game boy, but is really well crafted, and I thought you might find it interesting if you don't already know a bout it.
no i haven't heard about it!
In AES mode it only gives you four continues so that's how I've been playing it lately

Oh very interesting!
I think that even the unemulated Metal Slug 1 has more frames of input lag embedded in the game code than its sequels..
congrats on the 1cc !
Thanks!!! Working on metal slug 2 now!
It would be a perfect run if wasnt for that tiny death

I think you can get close, around 2 frames run ahead on the pi4 I think
So what's the best emulation for metal slug and the rest of the metal slug games for 1cc?
24:10 has his recommended emulator and settings
I've been grinding 1cc in MAME
for stage 5 i tend to jump out and fire under the boss instead of using the slug then u can also bomb spam
Don't play this in mame, play it in shmuparch :-) less lag in a big way

Definetly up there for sure! Metal slug 2,( minus slowdown) is also really good
