Hi Lina, that sounds kind of serious! Please, has your friend seen a doctor and made sure they're ready to do Pilates? The challenge is that Pilates is primarily a tool to strengthen, stretch and increase the endurance of our muscles. If the pain is physical, or if the sciatica is of certain types, it will make the pain worse. For example, this video here is a gentle stretch, and could be a good starting point though I would caution that they should stop if they even feel a slight bit of pain or discomfort: ua-cam.com/video/ERIf5g1xzgM/v-deo.html. Pilates is about pushing ourselves, and only when we're healthy enough to do so. For people with pain, this can be months of 3-4 gentle well structured workouts/week away. Will try to do another gentle workout soon too, maybe that can be helpful.
