Small correction regarding to the World's power guard. I believe that you actually take more chip damage with it than with normal guard but in exhange you get higher knockback resistance and ability to guard 360 degrees.
Funnily enough the normal counter actually has better knockback resistance then the power guard. If you block an attack that’s to strong with a normal counter you simply don’t counterattack but you don’t move an inche while power guard would get you knocked back a little bit

One thing i think it would be good to add is that the Lance had (for only few games) a unique mechanic of piercing damage, in simple words, if the hitzone has a shitty cutting hitzone but a good impact hitzone, it would do cutting damage using the impact hitzone in consideration.
Of all the hitzones in the games, that makes up like... 2. Of hundreds. And even then, you can still bounce because it was a percentage of the cutting zone, instead of switching to one or the other!
I think Lance really reached its peak in World. The leaping thrust as an alternative follow up to the advancing guard, the clutch claw use as a counter thrust alternative that could make up for its low damage with easy wounding and not to mention the ridiculous affinity boost it provides with the weakness exploiter skill, but above all the ability to launch a barrage of slinger ammo while always guarding, which is great for building up stagger to then knock a Wyvern over for some damage.

Interesting factabout Tri's lance; If you used the Wii motion controls, the counter happened by titlting the wiimote to the left and interestingly enough it was actually much faster to counter with the weapon because of this. Because counter generally required you to press "guard" before the counter motion actually happens, even if the counter inputs were executed perfectly on the controller it was still quite a bit slower.. So the Wiimote was far superior in this instance. This however did change in 3U version.
As a person who changes what weapon I play each game, I have been enjoying the heck out of the lance in rise. It feels very rewarding and fluid once you get down the combos. There are so many tiny optimizations that can be performed and having the switch skills also make it have a good variety even for its seemingly simplistic pokes. Have to say I'm very delighted to be using it and thankful you covered it the way you did in this video. Keep up the good work.
Spiral Thrust also has a 3rd hit, I think you missed it. You press X after the 2nd Dash. It has the highest MV throughout the skill. You can also change it into a back slap, lower MV, but works nicely if you overextend a bit out of the monster.
Power guard actually increases chip damage instead of reducing it. The advantages are 360 coverage, greatly reduced knockback, and multiple options out of it, two of which have mind's eye.
I like Lance cause it's consistent damage. Your shield is so good that you can just tank every attack and keep on poking even if it has lower damage relative to other weapons. My main is CB which is great for damage spiking unless you whiff a lot (which I do) then DPS isn't too high. Lance is a super comfy weapon
The lance is unpopular because people who have never used the lance assume the lance is only for defense. Little do they know the lance outputs some of the highest constant damage of any weapon.
This has probably already been suggested but wouldn’t it be cool to see a history of the frontier exclusive weapons, even if there might not be as much to talk about, or just one big video about how frontier weapons differed from their main series versions.
Little late, but a couple of things about twin vine that were a little easy to miss. It reduces knockback significantly when connected to the monster as well as reducing stamina cost. Also, the jump you can do actually has invincibility frames making it a good move-in/dodge tool. it will also activate faster if you initiate the jump right before an attack, causing you to block the hit and jump immediately after.
14:25 the power guard in World actually takes *increased* chip damage compared to regular guard Edit: also, a big advantage of power guard is that it's manual counter thrust can be aimed 360 degrees, so you can use it to still punish monster charges or other attacks that leave the monster to your side or behind you Finally, Guard Up does not allow a shield to block every attack. There are a few special attacks, including all pin attacks, that cannot be locked even with guard up
since sun break is coming up i hope they rework twin vine, something like attaching it to the end of the lance so that it has more range or something simple. the only thing you can really do now to almost guarantee that it will hit is doing a guarded advance then twin vine
Lance is my first love and true main of the series. It's a weapon that I can depend on to kill the monster effectively with minimal risk if time is not a factor.
I'd like to point a couple of things out. The first is what's probably the biggest use for power guard outside of tanking multihits: canceling block recoil. Because you're able to follow up with a power guard after blocking any heavy attack, the need for higher levels of guard is negated. Furthermore, health augments in world also negated the chip damage from the weapon. Another little-known fact about power guard is its inherent guard up after holding the stance long enough, which lets you tank certain unblockable attacks. The second, more important point to discuss is how lance was used in older games, notably gen and 4u. In 4u, the skill evasion +3 granted a stupid amount of s for any dodge, including backhops. Backhops, coincidentially, also lasted as long as those s before you could activate another. This means that chaining 3 backhops together would let you through almost any attack. This completely negated the need for a shield, and thus, evade lancing was born. In Generations, the evasion skill was nerfed to 2 levels. However, thanks to the addition of hunter arts, specifically absolute evasion and absolute readiness, which granted a ton of s, and enraged guard, which provided a massive attack boost, evade lancing is still powerful to this day, perhaps even surpassing 4u lance. Striker lance's charge finisher has a whopping 70 mv, and paired with the hunter art gauge boost from deviant weapons and striker style, allowed lancers to basically spam hunter arts. This was actually buffed in gen ultimate, as sp mode gives striker style natural hunter art regen. Adept lance, although not as popular, is still used by a large portion of lancers in both generations and rise. This, much like evade lancing, negated the need for guard skills. However, instead of relying on s, adept lance changed the standard guard into an adept guard, which, after blocking any attack, could be followed up with a cross slash, a sidestep, or another guard. While this seems just as effective as evade lancing, it is much more difficult to time an adept guard, and it's harder to chain into one from an attack. Lastly, tanky/traditional lance is the final prevailing play style, and focuses on guard skills and counters. While survivability is highest with this style, damage output is low, as time attacking, as well as offensive skills, are traded for defense.
Hurray some love for the lance :D Not sure if you wanna hear about this, but there were a few things that you missed: The swipe gives you „super armor“ so you can ignore things like long swords and switch axes (I don’t know since when it does that but I’m pretty sure it does that at least since 4th gen) If you receive heavy knockback that moves you backwards you can enter the power guard by pressing X/A/B The midair thrust you can do from twin vine is actually a bit stronger that a regular midair thrust (motion value of 40 instead of 30 I think) The shield charge can also perform a thrusting finisher by pressing A instead of X
A little "hidden" tech about MHW lance (and gunlance too) is that you can aim with L2/LT while your shield is up, meaning that you can do side/backwards guard dashes and also longhops out of neutral instead of after an attack, this also lets you aim the Wyvernblast of the gunlance. And also (unless I misunderstood) 14:23 Power Guard actually increases chip damage, so yeah, be careful when guarding big attacks
Just a quick note on power guard in world. While it does not drain stamina when blocking, you conversely take more chip damage. This makes it much worse when blocking multi-hit as compared to simply blocking or guard dashing. Essentially it's there to block big hits that you don't have enough guard in your set for normally or if you don't have enough stamina at that moment in the fight.
I am a Bow main but Lance is my secondary main weapon. Followed by the SnS and then the GS. I like the Lance a lot but for some reason I absolutely hate using it against Brute Wyverns. I don't know why but when I go in with a Lance versus any Brute Wyvern it always turns out to be a bad time. I have no problem using it when going against Flying Wyverns, Elder Dragons or any other monster type. It is just always Brute Wyverns for some reason
@@Kasaaz I imagine its because that those with a build similar to Mitsune slide circles around with those who use slower moving weapons? I wouldn't know since I am still trying to save for a Switch. I thought about it and I think my problems with a Lance when facing Brute Wyverns is because they are tall and a lot of their attacks come from high angles (Brachy's punches, Uragaan chin slam) and a Lance only blocks things that come from the front. So if you are close to the monster the hitbox of the attack can get behind the shield and hit you directly.
@@dianslabbert504 Yeah, you just spent the whole fight yelling, "COME BACK HERE!" as they slide or move away to launch projectiles at you. Mizu and Sonmacanth and even Royal Ludroth will do it. It is also nice because you can use it to hop over Somnacanth's sleep 'beam' thing where it slowly spins.
A bit of an adition: The hability to do the counter stance after the last attack in the triple poke combo has been brought back in World and it still persists in Rise. It's one of the reasons why the weapon felt so good in the 5th generation. Also in Tri and 3U, Lance was really the king of underwater combat since positioning wasn't that big of a deal and you could just stay there and block/counter every attack, and because lance pokes are really precise it made for a really easy time underwater.
About Anchor Rage, the damage boost seems to be based on knockback rather than damage, which is why the skill guard is not recommended if you use anchor rage.
I'd say the lance is the #2 most iconic weapon of Monster Hunter, just behind the great sword. The lance weapon pose (shown on many of the box covers of the game) is on the same level as the Michael Jordan basketball logo, when you see it you simply think "Monster Hunter"
The adept block is my favourite mechanic introduced in Gen and is probably my favourite mechanic in the entire series. I wish Rise's Insta-Block did it justice, but it didn't as much as I hoped. It also can't be understated how good Enraged Guard really was. It was basically a free Adrenaline +2 on top of your set. It was like the person who developed the Lance in Gen just smashed their keyboard when making it.
The lance just fits with me perfectly, I remember I had to force myself into using other weapons because I didn't want to become completely reliant on it
At first I never got into Lance or Gun Lance because of how slow it was. But after spending some time with it. I can see why people like it. It meant to be the great wall or the ultimate defense in monster hunter.
Fun Fact: In Rise.. the damage bonus you get from Anchor Rage isn't based on the damage or power of the incoming attack... it's based on the KNOCKBACK of it... So powerful roars actually give the highest bonus despite dealing no damage. In addition to this it means that the damage bonus is inversely affected by Guard armor skill, if you have higher levels of guard you'll get a smaller bonus. The skill to take instead if you want to take high levels of Guard is the replacement Spiral Thrust... Spiral Thrust cannot activate at all if the attack has too much knockback so it gets very much better with Guard.

I'm so glad that you're going to make a medium bowl gun video thank you.
This has probably already been suggested but wouldn’t it be cool to see a history of the frontier exclusive weapons, even if there might not be as much to talk about, or just one big video about how frontier weapons differed from their main series versions.
He already talked about those extensively in his video series about Frontier, he even talks about some of the exclusive moves for each weapon there.
@@GadgetGabe i completely forgot
Almost to the end of this long journey. First the history of monster hunter. Then frontier. Now the weapons. Whats next i wonder?
Blocking fatalis flames with that one "super guard" must have been cool
your music taste.... I love every single song you had playing
Lance Gang is here
Little late, but a couple of things about twin vine that were a little easy to miss.
It reduces knockback significantly when connected to the monster as well as reducing stamina cost. Also, the jump you can do actually has invincibility frames making it a good move-in/dodge tool. it will also activate faster if you initiate the jump right before an attack, causing you to block the hit and jump immediately after.
14:25 the power guard in World actually takes *increased* chip damage compared to regular guard
Edit: also, a big advantage of power guard is that it's manual counter thrust can be aimed 360 degrees, so you can use it to still punish monster charges or other attacks that leave the monster to your side or behind you
Finally, Guard Up does not allow a shield to block every attack.
Wonderfully done showcase of the lance's changes, man.
Hurray some love for the lance :D
Not sure if you wanna hear about this, but there were a few things that you missed:
The swipe gives you „super armor“ so you can ignore things like long swords and switch axes (I don’t know since when it does that but I’m pretty sure it does that at least since 4th gen)
If you receive heavy knockback that moves you backwards you can enter the power guard by pressing X/A/B
The midair thrust you can do from twin vine is actually a bit stronger that a regular midair thrust (motion value of 40 instead of 30 I think)
The shield charge can also perform a thrusting finisher by pressing A instead of X
4:59 btw in mh2dos (jp release only) you can only do it once regardless of any direction
Lance is Love, Lance is Life
I am a Bow main but Lance is my secondary main weapon.
Leviathans are why Lance has Twin Vine. They're so annoying otherwise.
Whoa, never imagined you'd make a video on my favourite weapon, the poke sword
That Tekken bit got a chuckle out of me.
A bit of an adition:
The hability to do the counter stance after the last attack in the triple poke combo has been brought back in World and it still persists in Rise.
Lance: for pacifists who want to stand next to monsters and be friends.
Entered the Tekken tourney did ya?
Well You're Leroy so you'll be fine
17:40 on top of that, skilbind anchor rage only last 10 freaking seconds... this is nothing
The lance just fits with me perfectly, I remember I had to force myself into using other weapons because I didn't want to become completely reliant on it
Time for more monhun history!
Really hope Magnet Spike soon and how its related to the shelved idea Wyvernian Boomerang
Dps doesn't really matter when you never have to stop attacking
Why didn't you cover evade lancing in MH4U!? It literally makes you immortal.
i can't wait to see what sunbreak adds to the lance! It better be some fun shit like twin vine.
Good luck in the King of Iron Fist Tournament my dude, watch out for lightning-imbued uppercuts!
Thanks! Will do!
when I want the job done right I get the lance when I am just messing around I use everything else
SuperRAD is fighting Akuma?! Whelp now we see why you needed a new controller😲
At first I never got into Lance or Gun Lance because of how slow it was. But after spending some time with it. I can see why people like it. It meant to be the great wall or the ultimate defense in monster hunter.
"Imagine the gunlance without the gun" Alright... I'm intrigued.
Go on
Kept us waiting, huh?
Wake up babe new SuperRAD video
FOR REAL!!!!!!!!!!!!
...get it, is funny because is a reference to that one game everyone likes
I loved lance since 3u demo the armor and lance looked so cool so I tried it and loved it
Fun Fact: In Rise.. the damage bonus you get from Anchor Rage isn't based on the damage or power of the incoming attack... it's based on the KNOCKBACK of it...
Guard 3/5 + Marathon Runner 3, just stay in Power Guard lol
YOOOOO LANCE VIDEO ? FINALLY !
