Personally, I appreciated Underwater Combat for balancing monsters. Generally, monsters that went underwater had a weak spot, usually on land. Gobul and Royal Ludroth could be legitimate threats in the water due to their faster speed and larger hitboxes, plus Gobul's access to much more threatening attacks, and Plesioth went from the aggravating fight it usually is to an actually fun and enjoyable one, while still not being a pushover. The only one that felt like a challenge both in and out of the water was Lagi, and, well, that just makes sense for the flagship.
Edit: Also Dire Miralis, but again, final boss, it should be a challenge.

I watched this video about a year ago, and your outro, with all the Elder Dragon cutscenes set to "Everlasting Words," stuck with me so much that I had to come back just for that part.
MH3U was my first game in the series, and it's still my favorite--every moment of it had such an immense impact on me, and I'm entirely okay admitting fact that my love of the game is just as emotional as logical. It MEANT a lot to me. My Wii U's hard drive unfortunately corrupted a few years back, and I decided I wouldn't replay the game; it just wouldn't, *couldn't* be the same as my first time playing, seeing everything with fresh eyes and experiencing the world of Monster Hunter with complete suspense of disbelief. But even so, just thinking about it brings me back in a really nostalgic way. Thanks for helping me relive a part of my adolescence I thought I'd lost.

3U was my first. The trailer for it was CONPLETELY misleading lmao but I'm glad it got me to buy the game. I played almost 800 hours in it. I was in Lebanon, so I couldn't play it with anyone. It was all solo (3DS).
It's my favourite in terms of charm, and my nostalgia for it is through the roof. But the thing with MH for me, is the almost every entry makes the previous one unplayable for me. I can't go back to the much more limited movement and attack options.
I want a return of underwater. It allowed for a whole new slew of new environment concepts, and for new monster concepts that can never be done without it, like the Ceadeus. MH has already gone crazy with its mobility, so why not let the hunter have the fluidity of Sekiro underwater. Have streams that speed you up, a pet fish in place of the Kinsect. Separate Hunter Arts for underwater. Let us harpoon the monster to cling to it. There's so much potential

The 3DS version of this game was really interesting, if only because I think the 3D kind of saved underwater combat. You're right about depth perception being a huge issue when underwater, but 3D (self-evidently) solves that. It makes me sad that we're probably never going to see another Monster Hunter game in 3D - depth is super important information that 2D screens are really bad at portraying. On that note, I have to wonder how many western Monster Hunter fans have experienced Portable 3rd HD's 3D mode - considering how much of a flop 3D TVs were, it has to be in the single digits, if that.

When you start talking about the aesthetics and specifically the night sky in flooded forest, you hit me hard. I thought I was the only one noticing those things. I love the more harmonic, foggy and colder tones in general, and as an artist, I mind aesthetics a lot (and this doesn't mean good graphics). I find the aesthetic of 3u the definition of harmony, not to mention the beautiful OST which contains many of the most beautiful themes in the franchise, and the sea theme in general. It really is my favourite title and the feeling it gave me among all other mh titles is unique. It'll be always my favourite. And I returned on it to work on my guild card after years 🥲

I'm an artist too and I totally agree with you! The maps felt naturalistic and in a way, that matched the theme of the entire game. World was great but felt a lot more fantasy inspired and the open map design meant a lot of the open vistas of the past games got left behind. The scale of some of those MH3U background landscapes just made you feel so small and insignificant. It's something I miss from newer entries. I think Tri's flooded forest is still my favorite map of all time. I haven't seen a single jungle map yet that makes it actually feel like you're in a dense, rainy forest on a cloudy, rainy day. It's perfect.

About Mirialis and the Dragonators (As someone who hunted over 20 Solo) it has "Key attacks patterns" or so to speak, tells that indicate that he is going to follow you or willingly get in place.
They are hard to see and are often cancelled if you topple him before you get it into possition.
Other thing is Multiplayer, if he focuses in a hunter that does not know of the tells and does not go to the dragonator, then you just miss it as well.
Underwater Dragonator is usually when he returns from land to sea and does a bite rush towards the player, so you gotta jump and swim towards the Dragonator before it's fully submerged.
Land Dragonator usually is when he does 2 bite rushes after a volcanic explosion attack (The meteor shower one)
Not knowing in advance will make you always miss Dragonators.
But come on, only schizos hunt enough Mirialis to notice.

I heavily disagree with your opinion on Alatreon in this game, though I respect your opinion.
This version of Alatreon is an incredible fight and one of the best in MonHun at least in my opinion because it truly tests your abilities as a hunter with regards to openings and positioning.
Alatreon's head has such a ridiculously high hitzone value that there's little point in attacking other parts, however due to Alatreon's almost regal pose it holds its head far above the player most of the time (something I think took away from its character in World).
The key was learning its moveset and learning when you could attack its head, there were certain attacks where it would lower its head for a moment and you had the perfect opportunity to land a golf swing or charged slash. Certain attacks it performed were guaranteed for it to taunt you and lower its head, even while in the air.
See, in world people hate when Alatreon flied but in 3U there were still plenty of openings. If it used 4 lightning claws in a row it was guaranteed to taunt and lower its head, so free golf swing. The AOE lightning attack on the ground as well, the fireball, a roar, the AOE lightning attack in the air. There's a guide for it on Gamefaqs but learning its moveset was truly rewarding, more so than any other monster for me.
You could even headsnipe it as it turned around after a dragon charge, say. Stuff like that made the fight truly the greatest with the Grongigas in my opinion. There were some cool mechanics like the head stuck in the wall, or the binder, but for the most part it was a simple fight testing your positioning and your fundamentals.

The art style and atmosphere is what I miss most from the 3rd gen. The deep yet muted colours, the misty conditions on maps like the Flooded Forest and Tundra, pre-4th gen Monster Hunter games had this mysterious haze about them, like you were venturing forth into the unknown, unsure what intimidating new beast of nature you would encounter next. The soundtrack as well is easily my favourite across the entire series, every feeling the game wants you to feel, you will feel it.
And of course the monsters all just exude character. Deviljho, Amatsu (I know he isn’t in 3U, but he should’ve been) and Zinogre are my top 3 monsters in the series full stop, Agnaktor and Brachydios aren’t far behind. And Ceadeus. Fighting Sunbreak’s final boss made me think about how much I missed the subtlety of elder dragons like Ceadeus. He isn’t some world ending, aoe spamming monstrosity, with a bombastic vocal choir theme, he’s just a big, rare, unique and sympathetic creature who happens to be on a collision course with the village. His encounter has a mythic quality to it and really emphasizes the tragedy in having to put him down.
I really hope the next Monster Hunter game takes a few notes from this one’s presentation.

When it comes to water combat. I agree it would be nice to move faster, esecially during the Ceadeus hunt. However as someone who took time with underwater hunting and who loves it completely, I feel the strategical options it gives me (attacking from above/below, and dodging some attacks easier underwater than on land due to that) outweighs the speed reduction. It also changed the flow of a hunt when a monster transfered from land to water and vice versa. Meaning some monsters you had trouble with may be easier underwater for you and thus balancing the level of fustration and fun during those hunts.

Tri U was my entry into MH, I got it with the Wii U during a promotion at Big W where you could choose one of several games to claim. I had seen MH3 multiple times on the shelves and really wanted to check it out so when 3U was available in this promotion, I jumped at it. I spent hundreds of hours of hours playing the game and ended up with some people I played the game regularly with. I wish publishers cared more for game preservation, I have no issues emulating the game but would love to see an official re-release on PC or even the Switch.

Tri was my first MH. Don’t think i ever got past Lagiacrus, or maybe a few monsters after that (curse under water fights). When World came out as an adult I sunk so many damn hours into that game, I appreciated that it was a bit more accessible to newer players as well as getting rid of loading screens was a great step for the franchise. I wanted more Monster Hunter so I ended up buying 3U for my 3DS. I didn’t even play it that much, or even touch my DS shortly after buying it, but the nostalgia of seeing locals and hearing the music from the Wii game was worth the purchase. I bought Rise and Iceborne recently and have been having so much fun. Despite not getting super far in the game I’m just glad I bought Tri all those years ago, because I’m not sure I would have given the new games a try, and they have given me so much joy these last few years.

  • @MikhailKutzow

As always, you make the raddest Monster Hunter videos. Like you, I started with Tri, but 3U was the most nostalgic for me. I played through most of it with a friend, and it was the only time I had gotten into and through G Rank until World (I've since gone back and spent more time with earlier games, though). It was truly a great time, and it has some of my favorite areas in the series.
Also, I've since become both more understanding of those who didn't like the reset monster roster, but also even more convinced it was necessary to do it when they did. At the time, Fredom Unite was the ultimate Monster Hunter game - it had every zone and every monster from the first two generations, and in general the first two gens never removed monsters, only added them, so I can understand someone used to this feeling burned. At the same time, though, I think Tri was the perfect time to break this trend, before it started getting in the way. And by stripping away almost all the old large monsters, they really freed themselves to change the roster as they like in the future. If they had tried to keep only adding monsters, not only would it have gotten progressively harder, likely reducing the number of new monsters we see, but it would have only created more backlash when they inevitably did so later. With the massive graphical upgrade in 5th gen, they would certainly have had to make cuts then, and would have only gotten more pushback than they did with Tri.
And while I'm ambivalent about swimming coming back: Let's see the dark caves and torches from Tri come back. Those were one of the best and most atmospheric inclusions, and fighting Giginox in a pitch black cave was incredible.

I'm so glad somebody actually understands how biases, are not only inevitable, but they are also core to how we process what's good or bad and Best or worst.
The best thing we can do when you meet somebody with a different opinion than ours, is to be open minded and try to understand why they might think that way, instead of shutting it off as simply "wrong opinions".
For me personally, my favorite MH game is Generation Ultimate, mostly because it's the one I've played the most, but it's also because it has almost everything that other MH games had, due to it being a celebratory title. It had the most monsters, it arguably has the most weapon depth due to Hunter Arts, it has the most locales, etc etc.
But I know people might not agree with me, and it's fine, I'll actually try to understand your pov and hope you would do the same

Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate was the last game me and my friends played almost every weekend locally. Meeting after school, ordering Pizza and grinding those mantles. Good old days. We played on the 3DS and I later got a Wii U Bundle with the game. This way we could play with the fight on the big screen while still being in the same room which was amazing at the time.
I still gladly revisist 3 Ultimate to this day from time to time and it's always a blast. I was never a big fan of underwater combat, but years later I don't mind it as much. If they would port this game to switch I'd buy it day one.

The part about MH Tri really hit home with me. I was 13 when the game came out and, having played MHFU a lot, I was hyped. Unfortunately, I had the worst internet connection at the time. If I was lucky, it would go 15-30 minutes before collapsing. Obviously not enough time to establish an online connection and go on a hunt regularly. That means I was able to get a glimpse of that online town but never actually got to truly experience it, even though I tried (desperately). That meant I was stuck with the 15 or so monsters that were available offline. I was so disappointed by that game. The change in visual appearance from MHFU really threw me off, too. Knowing that MHFU built upon MHF1+2, I remember sitting there, like: Is this what MH actually is? I considered MHFU to be a genius exception to an otherwise lackluster experience. Such a shame.
There is more to the story (I know no one cares), but in short: Not owning the respective consoles, the next title I got was World, which didn't really catch me with its convoluted map design and comparatively low difficulty (pre-iceborn), so I stopped bothering after about 90 hours of playing. Now I'm back for the PC release of Rise and hoping that Sunbreak will not disappoint, as I am somehow still in love with this game.

Bruh I started off with 3 Ultimate. Never actually got past the final boss of the single player game. That massive fish with a beard. Then I sold my Wii U…
But DAMN was it fun. I can tell you that MH3U still holds a massive place in my heart. Going back to Moga Village on the 3DS, just running around, maybe going to explore the island, stuff like that. It reminds me of my childhood. Well, more like my very early teens.
But it was so much simpler back then. I mean life, not MH. I remember not knowing what weapon to use, and trying the S+S. But I found it did basically nothing to small monsters. Of coarse, little me was dead wrong, but back then, I had no frame for damage.
And then I took up the GreatSword. And man, it took down Jaggi in a single fully charged swing. And not to mention the SOUND and FEELING of swinging that thing.
I still remember beating the Great Jaggi, making my Jaggi Armor/GS, and going to take on the world…
Anyway, that’s my reminiscing on the old days.
