Innovations in Fish Farming: How to Kill a Fish, Captive Bolt Gun Review

- In this video I review two captive bolt guns for use in salmon aquaculture. Modern fish farming practices are changing. Fish biologists are evaluating traditional practices used on fish farms to increase animal welfare, increase worker safety and to make the fish biologist profession equitable especially in salmon aquaculture.
In my opinion the most humane way to kill a fish when fishing or on a fish farm is first by percussion stunning then followed by a bleeding step also known as exsanguination. Percussion stunning is regularly accomplished by a fish priest or club. The goal is to only strike the fish once, above the brain cavity to cause brain death before a fish euthanasia procedure. But what if they are large fish, such as chinook salmon, or even larger like a white sturgeon?!?!?!?!?! Perhaps then, a tool that can generate more force is required.
One agriculture technology that has been used by many animal food industries is the captive bolt gun or captive bolt pistol. In this video I evaluate two captive bolt guns in Salmon Aquaculture. First, I evaluated the Zephyr-f by Bock Industries www.bock-industries.com/zephyr... and then the HPS-1 Euthanasia Stunner by Jarvis. www.bunzlpd.com/4044131-hps-1....
This is my personal opinion based upon my experience conducting animal welfare science. I evaluate how each captive bolt gun is used by fish biologists with no previous experience using these captive bolt guns who work in salmon conservation. While some of these fish biologists have years of experience, it is beneficial to review animal welfare on fish hatcheries and review how to kill a fish for general husbandry for spawning salmon.
I have no conflict of interest with either of these technologies or retailers and the opinions are my own.

No Country for Old Fish
I’ll soon be discussing the use of this technology in sturgeon.
DAWG HELP😭😭
Awesome video, I think it’s way better than icy suffocation or a club
Im 100% in agreement. Sometimes the club can be effective but there are significantly more miss strikes and need for repeated application later in the process. Not to mention the wear and tear on elbows, shoulders and hands.
After watching a few videos on these things being used on beef, it's not surprising this showed up in my recommended. Seems to me that the Zephyr is better suited for smaller factories with less personnel on hand, whereas the Jarvis is pretty obviously a two-man job. I wonder if operation of the Zephyr would be easier if the two "blades" on each side were transparent plastic or glass, so that you could see more clearly where you're positioning it on the head. Really interesting video.
I can use the Jarvis as a sole operator. Remember these are inexperienced operators. I suppose I need to do another video on each. I probably can to that on sturgeon relatively quickly. I hope to have a different bolt head from bock industries for this fall. Another thing to consider as this operation hadn’t used them before, so any changes to the set up would likely increase the efficacy of stunning.
@@ThisIsAquacultureGranted it can introduce it’s own problems, but using a cable to make the weight “disappear” has me intrigued as well from an ease of use/ergonomics perspective.
You can use the heavier tools with less fatigue and all that this way, at least *in theory*
Agreed. an overhead cable would reduce the weight and is commonly employed in other animal industries. @@ericlotze7724
The HBS1 looks so much better, as long as u have some experience. Higher likelihood to kill immediately, fish don’t suffer, meat doesn’t go bad from spasms & stress as quickly as suffocation, it’s all much better. Thanks for the video, I fish a lot and I use ikejime, and it’s neat seeing how a close equivalent is done on an industrial scale!
For smaller fish the zephyr is just fine. I will be coming out with a video of the Jarvis for use in Sturgeon aquaculture within the next couple months.
What are the worm like wriggling things in the chute?
Worms
Granted biology differences, but are Prion Diseases a concern with Aquaculture? (In terms of using Spiking/Pithing and/pr Captive Bolt Guns)
Not that I am aware of.
Hmmm, interesting video. Obviously i prefer the first gun, although the HBS1 seems more of sured death
Why obviously?
All about to fulfill the request of the certification auditor
I don’t understand the comment.
Does anyone know of small spring loaded gun that could be used on a small fishing boat?
I’ve used these on fishing boats. Just bring a much smaller tank of gas. Commercial boat or recreational?
@@ThisIsAquaculture 25' recreational
@@webb-cast1030Look up “Ikejime” you basically use a spike to destroy the brain, a pith to hollow out and destroy the spinal cord, then chuck them in the ice.
Requires a bit of knowledge, but great tutorials out there!
Are these salmon kill for eating? Cause they already turned dark and decaying. They arent even good for eating unless you are desperate. Salmon is best eaten when they are silver. The ones show here have turned dark. Not good eating.
These fish have returned to the hatchery where they originated. They will be spawned for conservation purposes. These are not food fish.
0:36 that must have been deliberately shaped as a joke. is it really necessary for function, that there's a crevice which separates the head of the bolt 😀
Not a joke. We discussed the engineering of it. We discussed after the video sending me a different bolt head, a flat on for me to experiment with.
Wow 😮😮😮❤
Seems like the fishes still squirming after getting shot
It’s not squirmy, it’s just involuntary muscle contraction. There is no movement afterwards.
Job application: fish shooter in the head person.
Terminal Spawning is hard work for fish biologists (job title). You're exhausted at the end of your shift.
I only use this when the fish see me😈
Nose si sea una muerte instantánea prefiero usar el método tradicional bien hecho
El objetivo es dejar al pez permanentemente inconsciente sin recuperación. Todo el mundo dice que el método tradicional es mejor al principio. :)
Gracias por el cumplido.
Translation: The goal is to render the fish permanently unconscious without recovery. Everyone says that the traditional method is better at first. :)
Thanks for the compliment.
Sensation occurs when there is ample oxygen supply in body of organism , the most painless way is to suddenly cut oxygen supply. The way you are killing will cause the fish to be brain dead or in comma but the fish will be alive . Cut the head with a sharp chopper. That's the best way imo.
Cutting head off is labor intensive, slow, and would occur after spawning. You would not exsanguinate the fish prior to strip spawning them at this facility. Stunning is the first step prior to the termination step which would be exsanguination. Having the fish brain dead helps to maintain heart function which helps to push blood out of the fish.
I wonder if these will work for potato’s?
You know, a potato gun….
I think it would be less effective on potatoes.
This is so hardcore.. imagine this on a small cat or rabbit
Different tools are utilized for mammals. Usually penetrating bolt guns versus non penetrating as achieved here.
Nop, i would not resist from test it on my own head
Not a good idea!!!
I need you to step out of the tank, sir
Do you feel lucky?
I can hear the vegans crying already
Not sure about vegan but many just don’t like dams and the fish hatchery system. Usually that’s some of the most vocal members of the community.
@@ThisIsAquaculture Thank you for having a reasonable mindset on this topic. Many base their thoughts on the most radical/vocal members of the community, when in reality most people on both sides want the best for the animal, the consumer, and the business.
How did you know I have vegan terrace to season my steaks?
LOL 😂
The same vegan women that love to swollow
Thank you for not shying away from educating in the face of cancel culture. I’m sick of politics determining what I watch
Well I don’t know about cancel culture. I am concerned about the welfare of these amazing animals and want to be sure that they are treated with the reverence they deserve. Another thing to add is to make sure that everyone in the workplace is equally able to be effective in their job as well as protecting staff from injury.
Just just a Billy bat.
Faster and more humane
If that was so I wouldn’t be exploring better methods.
@@ThisIsAquaculture seal pups. The end
Japan people do not understand what's going on. Why kill fish if we can serve it alive and moving?
You would not want to eat these fish. Meat quality is very poor prior to spawning.
Not toy gun
definitely not a toy!
Poor fish was pregnant
Female salmon have eggs while males have sperm. They come to hatchery where the humans spawn them and raise their embryos and feed them until they are big enough to return to the wild.
Женскому полу только это не показывайте, а то они найдут этому пестолету другое применение

NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN
Old fashion knife or pojer for me, please
Knife is the sKncond step. First step is tKnifeo make the fish unconscious. Then you apply the bleed step. Using a knife is slow and dangerous. Remember you are doing this for hundreds to thousands of fish.
Animals don't really want to get slaughtered to death

Im not vegan and i feel sorry for those fishes 🥲🥲
Done correctly it is instantaneous. The alternative is the fish die over a long period of time. Pacific salmon die after spawning naturally. These fish have lived a long life to get to this point.
