I approached Roy at a gig he had at the Blue Note and asked him when he was going to play with Chick Corea next. It was a small talk stupid question on my part and basically made him secondary to Chick in his mind. His answer was a gruff, I don't know, you'd have to ask Chick. In my feeble defense, I was there to see Roy play.

I met Mr. Haynes after show once in NYC. He was nice enough to talk to me for a few minutes. Not only one of the best players on the planet, a genuinely super nice guy. RIP 🙏
99 years of life here in America. He saw all its highs and all its lows. He formed the past and taught the future. Roy, you were one of the last ground floor jazz guys alive and we thank you for your impressive reign on the drums. You’ll forever be a historical figure inside Americas greatest contribution to the world… RIP, good sir. RIP.
R.I.P. Roy Haynes, one of the OG Bop to Post Bop Giants, his playing on Chick Corea's 'Now He Sings, Now He Sobs' and Pat Metheny's 'Question And Answer' are some real fantastic examples of RH's playing. His music and legacy and influence live on. What an incredible, stellar example of Roy's musicality, on the tune w/ Stan Getz, Steve Swallow and Gary Burton. I had never seen that historic footage, thanks for sharing.
I had the wonderful opportunity to interview Roy Hayes for a college project. I was going to school in Philadelphia and his group was playing at the Village Vanguard in NYC. I drove up to New York, watched an incredible set played with finesse and style. At the end of the gig his piano and bass player were sitting at the bar and I walked up to them and asked "is Roy still here, I'd like to ask him a couple of questions" the piano player shrug the shoulders and pointed towards the dressing room area and said "he's probably over there, why don't you go take a look." I walked over to the dressing room and Roy is sitting at a small table, bottle of water in his hand, wiping the sweat from his head with a small towel. He was incredibly gracious and answered every question that I had. This was when he was 80 years old. I remember walking away from that moment thinking I hope I look that good when I am 80, much less sound that good. Fountain Of Youth Indeed!
I watched your video tribute to mr Haynes a few hrs After you posted it. A beautiful tribute, the footage from the 60s I’ve seen, but what an amazing solo! Chicks trio in Japan Is also amazing(I saw that trio at the Vanguard in 1982). I was fortunate enough to have seen Roy many times since the early 1970s, some of those gigs were unusual and unique. I talked to him and had a few conversations over the years, when he was on a break, always friendly and so informative. Of course, he is one of the greatest innovators in modern jazz,Having influenced basically every drummer who came after him.ty Brett & god bless Roy Haynes🙏
Roy's been right here, everywhere, all my life. That just won't change at all. Thank you for posting this right away! I'm thinkin' what'd I miss along the way? Peace and Love to All listening 💝
No comments yet . God bless this man and his family. Such a great drummer and I remember the live at St Nicks Charlie Parker LP which I think had Roy Haynes on the cover . The Pat Metheny LP Question and Answer was out of this orbit . Great great drumming. The bit of film Jazz on a Summer's Day with Thelonius Monk and Henry Grimes and Roy is outstanding of course . The live at Newport with John Coltrane with Roy subbing for Elvin Jones another legendary recording. The LP Times Square with Gary Burton and Steve Swallow with Roy and Tiger on trumpet. The Bud Powell LP on Blue Night with Sonny Rollins and Fats Navarro. What another great record with Tommy Potter on Bass . Saw Roy live in 1999 at the Pizza Express in London with his trio and yeah of course it was off the chart , great trio . Another time he was in Ronnie Scott's watching Elvin Jones but yeah we were watching him watching Elvin ! Loved that film with him and Chick and Mirislav in Japan that was class stuff. The man has been a jazz super hero
My sincere condolences to CRAIG, GRAHAM and the family and friends of the great ROY HAYNES! I am extremely grateful 🙏 for having been an exponent of the ROY HAYNES HIP ENSEMBLE back in the 70's. He taught me so much about playing jazz and performing live on various stages in many venues! I will never forget when I was a guest at his house in LONG ISLAND, he exclaimed that he played with the great CHARLIE PARKER! What a revelation! Roy was definitely one of the all time giants. Thanks for leaving a legacy for the ages. 99 years truly a blessing! I’m listening to you now as I type this message. Bless you my brother much love ❤🎵🎶🎵🎶
One of the last my drummer-musicians heroes!! I met him once off stage in a concert in Portugal and, knowing my love for jazz drumming, said to me: If you come to New York send me a post card before. Mr. Haynes what is your address. Just write Roy Haynes, New York city. Everybody knows Roy Haynes. Even if this is not totally true, everybody should listen to his art and craft. Still is my favourite drummer in a guitar trio. That record trio of Pat Metheney, Dave Holland and the master Haynes recorded in one day. Holland had never played with Mr. Haynes before. Always on my mind and heart Mr. Haynes wherever you are.
Un de mes batteurs préférés, et pour tant d autres.Jamais vous ne serez oublié, vous êtes Mr Haynes, la definition de l'Art et la Pureté .RIP in swing.
Thank you for posting this GEM of an interview for such a marvelous musician and spirit. Roy will be bringing great light to the ultimate gig in Heaven.
I saw Roy Haynes play a couple of times at the Vancouver Jazz Festival. Loved the encore with him and just a high-hat for several minutes. Great sense of humour. Cowboy hat and boots... he had style. Thanks for posting this and glad he lived 99 years.
I literally was just wondering yesterday whether the great Roy Haynes was still with us. He was indeed still with us yesterday but now I find out that today he's gone. Ninety nine years! What a career he had, what an imaginative drummer, and apparently what a great person he was. Think about all the musical associations he had over the years with Lester Young, Charlie Parker, Sarah Vaughn, Sonny Rollins, Thelonious Monk, Bud Powell, Roland Kirk, Stan Getz, John Coltrane, Oliver Nelson, Eric Dolphy, Chick Corea, Gary Burton and so many more. RIP Mr. Snap Crackle! I'll come back later to watch the rest of this tribute...thank you for doing this.
Roy Haynes man - 99 years old, like a whole decade, wow! He must have seen it all, great, great drummer... on of a kind among the top of the top! R.I.P.

WOW...just short of 100! I hope/think he deserved a long life. Superbly incredible drummer! I saw him with Chick Corea and Miroslav Vitous once...they killed it! Afterword, the three came out for a bow, and it was the extreme of Large, Medium, and Small, with Miroslav quite tall, Chick in the middle, and Roy was the shorty! Hillarious... more importantly, the music utterly COOKED. They complimented each other really well. A magical trio(!)
He was really youthful and a spirited drummer. I thought he'd live forever! Only a Pisces like Roy would be 30 years younger than his actual age! Riparadise🙏🙏🙏
Thank you so much for sharing this beautiful tribute to my Grandpa! I'm so grateful for the legacy he leaves behind and all of the beautiful memories that have been captured by so many!
God Bless Roy Haynes. Saw him with Stan Getz many years ago. Enjoyed one of his birthday shows at the Blue Note. His lovely daughter introduced me to Roy who signed a beautiful picture of him sitting behind his kit. 🙏🎵❤️
Now this is what the meaning “A Treasure Trove” can be use as an example. This blessed musician and top of the line drummer clearly was a special individual. For him to be that sharp minded at that stage of his life is extraordinary. He was definitely gifted. Will be missed but never forgotten. A special salute to this channel for honoring “The Great Roy Haynes”.
That ROY-ALTY album with Roy Hargrove & Chick was my first introduction to this gentleman . I loved his drumming on Equipoise by Stanley Cowell , it’s s pure Fire 🔥. In his interview about the song Equipoise he said “ I played that song like it was mine man “ . Until he found out that Stanley Cowell wrote the song for his daughter . 😅 That generation of Jazz players through there music , helped through some dark times in life , that lasted for 11yrs . Their music has a different meaning to me . Thanks Brother .

What an absolute legend! As a jazz drummer myself (Connie Kay being my idol), Roy Haynes had a large influence on my playing when I first got into jazz, and I still love him to this day...
Brett, thank you as always for such a great tribute,in both the videos and your writing. And thank you for all that you have done to keep this incredible music alive on UA-cam. ❤
I will never forget hearing Roy for the first time on Chick Corea's Now He Sings Now He Sobs Album, which I listened to almost every day then. Been a Roy fan ever since! Thank you Roy! R.I.P.
One of the lights has gone out of the world. Roy Haynes has passed at 99 years old. One of my first inspirations and heroes, I was lucky to see him live a few times and even interact with him for a few precious moments. At once modern and timeless, he was an artist that could have existed during Sumerian times or been at the heart of NYC 2050...you could never 'put your finger' on what he was doing, but the joy and inticacy he brought to all of music told you immediately you were listening to an innate master. Here is a piece I wrote many years ago published in an obscure Jazz monthly. I was informed by the editor, who rubbed elbows with Roy at a trade show, that Mr. Haynes loved the article and took a dozen copies with him(!) It came out of my deep love and respect for the man, and after searching for it an hour, am happy to share. The photo is used with permission from the Pat LaBarbera personal archives for my Elvin Jones coffeetable book in progress. L-R is Roy, Pat LaBarbera, Elvin Jones (circa early 1980's). R.I.P dearest Roy!!! Haynes!!!! ------------- Roy Haynes Any Era By James Bennington In 1996 when I was living in Houston, Texas, a friend calls me up and asks what I'm doing the next day. I say nothing and would he like to get together for lunch? Instead, he asks if I'd be interested in picking Roy Haynes up from the airport! Roy was coming in as the headliner for the Houston Jazz Festival and we were warned beforehand that he may be hard to deal with and to "watch out", so we were a little nervous. The day looked as though it would get off to a bad start as we had been given incorrect flight information and arrived late. I saw Mr. Haynes sitting calmly by himself in the terminal and approached him with caution...immediately, I found that Roy was a kind and gracious person with a quick and, at times, cutting wit. At 71 he wore a very stylish casual outfit of khaki slacks, slip on dress shoes, and a striped sleeveless shirt. His head was shaved save for a "soul patch" in the back. As we assembled the group and got under way, I could see that Roy had more energy than the younger musicians he had with him, as well as a better attitude. Obviously, the rest of the band (except for pianist Dave Kikoski) was more excited about their next tour stop in New Orleans, treating Houston as a necessary evil. Roy, who's been doing this for 50 + years, was plainly excited not only about the night before them, but the sound check as well! First, we went to their hotel and Roy goes to the bar while the band and the tour manager secure the lodgings. It turned out that the hotel had only reserved regular rooms for the band. While Roy sits at the bar (fully aware of what is going on), the tour manager tells the staff that Mr. Haynes must have a suite. He explains to them who he is, who he has played with, how many times he has played at the White House, etc. It's not until he mentions Miles Davis and Charlie Parker that the staff recognize a "name" -- one complimentary suite for Roy Haynes coming up (after much haggling and convincing)! Roy graciously asked my friend and I to join him and promptly offered to buy us a drink. I refused and bought Roy a Bacardi and soda and the three of us hung out while the rest of the group freshened up from their journey. An attractive waitress less than half his age focused her attention on Roy and flirted with him; she had no idea how old he was! Hell, I can't wear a sleeveless shirt and get away with it! Once everyone was ready, we departed for the sound check. On the way, Roy talked to us about the old days (in the South especially) and the poor conditions for blacks then. How the band had to disinfect the beds and bathrooms, get their food from the backdoors of restaurants, etc. For a moment, we realized that Mr. Haynes has been around a long time. That feeling quickly disappeared though as we watched him rehearse his band; we watched and learned from a true master. How fresh his approach was! One thing I'll never forget is during one of the tunes in their set, a four-four swing tune, Roy did his famous triplet beat- the right hand playing the first two notes on the snare, the third on the bass drum with the left hand lightly muting the snare head. He did this rhythm for several choruses and took the music to another plane! Roy really went for it during the rehearsal; the show that night was more polished. That evening, when he was introduced he literally jumped from behind his kit exclaiming to the audience "I'm one of the last of the swing era musicians!" As I recall, it was the fourth of July weekend and seeing Roy perform along with the colorful fireworks in the night sky was just beautiful...Though tired from the many events and the hecticism of the day, we watched from the wings that evening with a few smiles aimed at us from Roy himself, and we knew that being around and witnessing the timeless and uncanny magic of this man was a privilege in any era! Thank You Thank You Roy Haynes! Post Script I caught the perennial Roy Haynes several years later at the Jazz Alley in Seattle, and aside from watching him up close (by the high-hat), the night was especially memorable because after his set, I remember Roy sat alone at the bar eating oysters on the half shell and drinking beer. It was pleasantly surprising to see such a legend just sitting there along with everybody else. Only a few folks approached him, so I went up and reminded him of our meeting some years ago (I also got his autograph on We Three, one of my favorite records)...while we were talking, the bartender said he thought it was great that Roy was hanging out at the bar after his set and Roy looked surprised and asked what the other artists did. The bartender told him that most of them went back to the dressing room. Roy heard that and said, "Ah man, that's outta style!”
R.I.P. to a drumming great. And that intro (and motif) on the vibes in Jive Hoot reminded me of something - then I realised it was a jazzy Mario Kart Frappe Snowland (I can't help it, I listen to brilliant Aussie ensemble The Consouls all day!)
This tribute to Roy Haynes is beautiful. He will never be forgotten in the jazz world. Thank you so very much!
indeed thank you for this upload.
Roy has been 1 of my very fave drummers for decades. His drumming was very dynamic yet very sensible and sensitive. What a powerful, soulful, tasteful and intelligent drummer!

I saw them during their '83 tour in Troy, NY. I actually got to meet Chick and Roy when someone pulled the fire alarm and I went out the same side exit as them. 🤣 Ultra-cool dudes, both of them, and so great together. RIP

Great comp! What a vibrant 99 year old he was. Greatness transcends the concept of age!
Thanks Roy for everything you gave us. RIP
his groove lives on.with his thousands of disciples.
Had a long and wonderful life! He will be missed but no need to morn he should be celebrated.

Another beautiful musician in heaven. RIP Mr Haynes!
He was a founder and an innovator. It's usually hard to pick favorites among drummers, but Roy makes it easy.
I will never forget hearing Roy for the first time on Chick Corea's Now He Sings Now He Sobs Album, which I listened to almost every day then. Been a Roy fan ever since! Thank you Roy! R.I.P.

Rest in power Roy. One of the great influences on my drumming style. He played until the end.
Haynes!!!!

Roy Haynes
Any Era

In 1996 when I was living in Houston, Texas, a friend calls me up and asks what I'm doing the next day.
That evening, when he was introduced he literally jumped from behind his kit exclaiming to the audience "I'm one of the last of the swing era musicians!"
As I recall, it was the fourth of July weekend and seeing Roy perform along with the colorful fireworks in the night sky was just beautiful...Though tired from the many events and the hecticism of the day, we watched from the wings that evening with a few smiles aimed at us from Roy himself, and we knew that being around and witnessing the timeless and uncanny magic of this man was a privilege in any era! Thank You Thank You Roy Haynes!
Post Script
I caught the perennial Roy Haynes several years later at the Jazz Alley in Seattle, and aside from watching him up close (by the high-hat), the night was especially memorable because after his set, I remember Roy sat alone at the bar eating oysters on the half shell and drinking beer.
99 Years WOW! This man did something right. May he be Eternal.
Thanks Bret, RIP one of the great sound masters on the drums. I always liked to think I could recognize Roy Haynes by the sound of his snare.
Just great.
My dad Marky Markowitz played with Roy on many occasions,he played trumpet and passed in 1986
Rest in power to the OG! You were the source of the new uncut and for real! Big ups!
Farewell mister Haynes , thank you for the drummers and jazz music.
