I swear to God the power and energy he's showing during this solo got me crying...! Unbelievable the way he manages to express himself on the drums at that age!
In the full video of the concert you can see minutes of ecstatic joy and abandon right after this amazing solo, Chick laughing with excitement and announcing "IIIIIIT'S HAAAAAYNNES!!" to the jubilant crowd. :)
Chick Corea and RoyHaynes reunited again on a glorious stage. RIP gentlemen. It is really swinging up there now! Both of you are, and will be, truly missed.
I've had the good fortune of seeing both Kenny Garrett and Roy Haynes headline different jazz festivals in the early 2000's. Both unbelievable talents.
There are so many gifted musicians, but Roy Haynes was that drummenr NO ONE could ever copy. He was such a character! Let's hope we all get to see each other after this life
Great stuff to listen to! I would call this inspired jamming. These artists are beyond every level absolute reference. I love the way, they fit together: Technicaly as well as in their spirits!
My drum teacher toured with Roy across Japan long time ago. Maybe he was the only Japanese drummer who could get together with the Legends like Roy Haynes and Jack Dejohnette back then. I remember when I visited his home I saw a Paiste 602 flat ride cymbal hung on the wall in his living room which was used in the Now He Sings Now He Sobs album and Roy gave him.
You’re so right. If I hear one more person talking about Neil Peart I’ll probably go out of my mind. The solo is nothing but pure music and a complete response to all of the music they got put inside of him before his solo. Very little chops actually but an over abundance of music. Pure music
Roy is the only drummer that I actually shake my head during his solos. Similar to Buddy Rich very few drummers have come along that could play better.
A drum solo is not the most important in a band. The way Roy Haynes is comping is extraordinary. But common people likes drum solos because it’s demonstrative, technical, loud… they feel like at circus. Please, listen more carefully to the accompagnements of Roy, Tony and Elvin. There is the secret, there is the Music. 1:14
When listening to a drum solo, don’t just focus on the individual snare hits, cymbal crashes, or flashy techniques. Instead, try to hear the song the drummer is telling over the long arc of their solo. At first, you might not automatically hear the "song" within the solo-it takes some practice. Try humming along with the main theme of the tune as you listen. There will be moments when the drummer’s phrasing lines up perfectly with the melody, and those are the magic moments. When you start listening to the story and overall structure rather than just the technical tricks, it makes the music much more enjoyable. Remember, all the great jazz drummers aren’t just playing licks in their solos-they’re singing a song. Keep that in mind.
@sangwooshin9007 Been playing for 45 years. Played with big acts to small acts. I've done session work for 35 years. Taught as well. Drum solos are a subjective art. This didn't do it for me towards the end. Thanks for a great dissertation on listening to drum solos. Great advice!!!

Used to listen to this video daily, here I came back to say Rest in Peace to the Great Snap Crackle.

RIP big guy. i don't know where we go when it's over, but it just got way more hip there.
Perhaps it's worth finding out.
Champagne sparkle drums give me a funny feeling inside. Like the first time a pretty girl talked to me and smiled. Rest in peace, Maestro Haynes.
A Force Of Nature!
99 today😊
AAAAHHHH!!!! 😻😻😻😻💪💪💪💪
I'm sorry, but the best rock drummers in history can't hold a candle to the jazz greats.

People don’t really talk about the connection him and Kenny always had. Didn’t matter when or where. They always did this together.
RIP Roy (and Chick) 😢
drum solo starts about 9:25
Damn! Roy Haynes here at 85-mf-ing years old!!!
Roy is the only drummer that I actually shake my head during his solos. Similar to Buddy Rich very few drummers have come along that could play better.
R.I.P. Roy
Roy
R.I.P Roy Haynes 😭
hard to believe he was 84 in this performance
Now he and Chick can play together, again...
I wonder what Buddy Rich would have been like, had he made this age..

I hope it does not sound disrespectful, but was Roy playing half-time here?
He’s keeping time
bass is loud
Great solo but started to sound like noise towards the end......
