I saw them on this tour. Before that gig I was appreciative, yet wary of jazz. That gig was my gateway drug you see. It was a balmy summer night in Madrid. They were set up in Conde Duque, an old barracks turned cultural center. I knew of Jack, Don and Dave from Bitches Brew, a record I knew and loved. Herbie was on fire and the piano was exquisitely amplified. Brecker and Sco blew me away. I love the combination of what's essentially an acoustic quartet + percussion with the electric guitar. It's pretty unique (Metheny group at times, but they're more synthy). Nobody has done that better than this combo. Now 30 years later I'm a massive jazz and jazz rock fantic. thank you for this very nice story. To the person who wrote the subtitles of Herbie speaking, when Herbie mentions the musiciens he apreciates, it is Sly Stone (from the lengendary band" Sly and the Familly Stone") and not "sliced Stone"as it s writen in the subtitles.
Love that interview at the beginning. Herbie has always been so thoughtful in both his words and music. Love how he has always tried to move into the future without letting go of the past.
Well 1st off, thank you Jazz Video Guy!! Great videos from you, and especially this one!! It’s quite certain most, if not all jazz pianist, keep an eye on what Herbie’s up to. The guy has such an amazing contribution, not only to the jazz genre, but really to listening ears all over the world regardless of styles. Herbie is one of the all time Jazz greats. However, I'm shocked that he didn't mention Les Paul in regards to the formation of R'N'R. Sure, Hendrix was an innovator but Mr. Paul INVENTED the instrument he chose to make that statement with and multitrack recording which was used to record, arguably, Hendrix's biggest hit 'Purple Haze'. I'm always astounded at how many amazing musicians fail to recognize that man's invaluable contributions to music including his albums.
All due respect to the legends of the old, these are the legends of the now…especially HH who IMHO is one of the current greatest, but underrated, musicians…respect…
One of my very first recording sessions was with Dave Holland on Upright Bass In Washington DC in 1972/73. He made it very easy to play with his strong sense of time.

The interplay between Scofield and Herbie is exceptional, the way Herbie echoes Scofield’s phrases while ever intruding on Scoflield’s solo.
As soon as Michael Brecker starts playing...you know that you are in the presence of a great master!
