That was an official quote. You could probably find someone to program it for less than 900 but the dealer, as usual, tryst to take advantage of their mistakes in manufacturing.
Great video coming from an ASE mechanic. You made this so informative that any basic person without basic automotive knowledge could easily repair their vehicle. I wish more people who do videos was as informative as yours has been. Everyone watching could easily take it apart. A little basic soldering skills and you have fixed your vehicle with very little money.... big WIN.....
I Also Had 3 Bulbs Out In The Instrument Cluster, By Purchasing The Bulbs, Exercising I Lot Of Patience, And Using Your Video Today ..... I Saved Myself $256.00 !!!!!!! I Truly-Truly Thank-You.
Excellent Video. My 2001 Expedition has needed this for a long time. Dealership wanted an arm and 2 legs to install a new cluster instead of repair of old one. Now it will be able to show my 330,000 miles I have on the odometer!! yipppeee.
This video was immensely helpful. We did exactly this fix on our 2001 Expedition. The shop wanted to replace the odometer for $200! Instead it took us an hour to remove it, solder, and replace. Essentially no $$ for a couple drops of solder! Thank you!
Fixed my wagon. Video was spot on for my 99 expy. After having the taste of victory and while the dash was apart I tackled the cold solder joints on my radio display too. A nice two-fer. Seriously thanks for taking the time to share this repair.
photofreak, thanks so much for your excellent video. My son's 2004 F-150 had the same problem. It took me an hour to fix it thanks to your video. The world needs more folks like you. Sessman
Thanks for the video! I have a 2001 F150 that I have had since it was brand new. Sometimes my odometer would work, and sometimes it doesn't. I followed your instructions and it has seemed to work perfectly. I'm 500 miles away from rolling 300k miles, and now I know I will be able to watch it pass that mark! Thanks again!
Excellent video, Thanks a ton man. Did it on my 2000 F-150. Couldn't tell which joint was cold on the cluster so I heated then added solder on both ends just in case Success! Extra thanks for showing the ENTIRE process on camera even on the parts that seem impossible to do without two hands.
I have a 1999 expedition,Not sure if ill do this or let someone do this,But thank god for you to show the world how to do this on their own,Ill give this a thumbs up,Your the best,Wished i had you in my presence though:)
Just fixed my 1999 Expedition's odometer! Thanks for the video brother. Good music playing too. Only 181,057 miles on it and running strong. It took about 2 hours. I buffed the clear plastic lens with Flitz while I was at it. I used my compressor to blow out the dust. Looks like new. I had 6 screws that were 1/4" longer than the rest. I realized this after removing em. I put them where it looked like they were likely needed... like where two pieces of plastic overlap. One HUGE Tip.... Go out and get yourself a 9/32 MAGNETIC TIP driver bit... I used my drill/ driver with a non magnetic tip. If you can find a longer one and its magnetic... even better. It will cost maybe $5 bucks and save you some frustration having screws fall behind a panel. Luckily I have a magnetic "screw grabber" in my garage. Got used three times. lol
Your video and instruction for fixing the Instrument Cluster was very helpful. I also appreciated hearing your background music "We Won't Be Shaken" by Building 429.....Harvest
This video was the most helpful. My 2001 F150 is the same. It is not necessary to take anything loose outside of the instrument cluster area. The best part, for me, was the clips holding the shift indicator. Also, the headlight cluster can be removed easily by taking off the knob, reversing it, and using it as it's own removal tool. Just turn the knob to the left, and it releases the small cluster.
Outstanding video! Thanks for taking the time to record the process. The level of detail was extremely helpful. Keep recording those repairs, and we'll keep watching.
I appreciate you making this video. I've had odometer problems with my F150 since I purchased it. The video is dictated very well and great step by step instructions. Thanks very much!
Thanks for the video. I had this problem for nearly 5 years . I passed emissions luckily when the odometer was on. But this year it has been worst. But now I'm gonna it done. Thanks again.
I Appreciate This Video, I Had Two Bulbs Out In My A/C Control Unit And I Used This Video To Replace Them. I Have Two Bulbs Out On The Left Side Of The Cluster Gauges, I'm Going To Use This Video And Save Myself The $225-$250.00 They Wanted To Charge Me !!!!!!! .......Thank-You Again !!!!!!
Thank you for this. Like everyone else with an older Ford pickup I have this problem, and was reluctant to send the cluster away for expensive repairs.
I totally appreciate you taking the time to document this for the rest of us! Just finished the repair and it is working! If it cuts out again, I know what to do!
I did this repair on a 2000 Navigator. Very easy. No need to take the center panel off or screws out. No need to loosen the lower panel either. The trim panel under the cluster pops out, 7 screws hold in the instrument panel trim, and that's it. Pop out the light switch, disconnect the wiring on the instrument panel trim piece, four screws hold the instrument cluster in, pop off the gear shift indicator (as shown) undo the wiring in the back and out it comes. Takes less than 1/2 hour. Another 1/2 hour to solder the two pins, put it all back together and that's it.
Did this today and was pretty easy. Shop quote was $1100 only cost me $23 for sodder gun. Keep track of what you take out and in what order. I disconnected battery to be safe. Great advise and site!!!
Excellent video! Great step-by-step on how to pull the dash apart for those inexperienced DIY type. Glad I found it because I had no idea it was as simple as a solder joint breaking contact on the back of the cluster on the PCB!
Awesome video guy, I'm not having any odo issues, just wanna change my dash bulbs to a different color but wanted to see how to remove the dash cluster. Very well authored!
Thanks for this. Same issue in my 2000 F150. Truck only has 56k miles on it and already having this issue. If I ever go to sell it I have to have this working because NOBODY would believe this 16 year old truck only has 56k on it. lol. And like many other commenters, I'm digging the K-Love Radio station in the background. They have that station here in Macon, GA where I live
Thank you for the feedback. It's always nice to help others on projects like this & it's always nice to get good feedback. Wow, 56k miles...amazing!! gotta love KLove ;)
Thank you so much for this video! You were right on! Perfect video of the procedure. My f150 was borne 12/1999 but registered as a 2000. I was a little leery of trying this but....nothing ventured nothing gained. Turned out to be pretty darn easy. Major kudos! Thanks again.
Thank you so very much. I've had that problem ever since I bought my Expedition but had no idea how to do the repair and had no idea on the procedure to get access.
This is a great video how to to fix this issue. Every step is included and ecspecially usefull is the instuctions on dropping the selector display. Be aware the circuit board solder terminals are much smaller than they appear in the video however. I have done some soldering and have a proffessional grade soldering pen but I was extremely nervous doing this soldering as it would be very east to bridge joints or lift traces(overheating) on the board. I found 3 definetly cracked pins so I repaired them all using very minimal apllication of solder. What I found worked best was to dab a bit of liquid flux to the joint with a Q tip, tin the point of the pen with a drop of solder and then shake most of it off. Use of flux is very important as it will reactivate the old solder. It should not even look like a drop of solder on the end of the pen but should be fully tinned. Touch the tip to the old pin and let the flux do it's magic. It will be properly repaired if the new joint is bright and shiny. If you have a strong magnifier use it and when you look at it you'll know if you got it right. Alternatively, if you have a good electronics repair shop handy or a friend who is an experienced hobbyist, you might want to farm it out. This job woud not be difficult for such a person, but if you have absolutely no experiece soldering this might not be a good project to practice on.After all you've done most of the work just getting the display out! Mine came out great but I have poor eyesight and although my joints came out perfect I was really stressed doing the soldering.Like I said the pins were much smaller than I anticipated. By the way I have a 2002 f150 and the display works perfect now. Many thanks to the maker of the video.
Thanks for the video... I've seen pictures online with forums...but actual video helps understand the process better... mine is currently just off and on occasionally, but when warmer weather hits i'll be doing the repair.
Thanks, you saved me a lot of time and effort so I am going to find me another way to fix mine. Maybe installing a new one in my tank and a gauge in a pod at the windshield. Thanks again.
Great video brother! I was having the same problem as well as a few problems that were easily fixed as I followed your process! You made it simple enough that even I had confidence doing it. Thank a ton!
Worked great for me the right pin and last 2 on the left I had to re-flow/add some. I could visibly see the crack all the way around the pin. Now it works great!!!
Also, its a good idea to check all of the bulbs plugged into that circuit board while you've got the unit out. Just check circuit continuity across each bulb to make sure they're not burned out - super easy once you've done the work to remove the unit.
That looks like something that can be done at home. I just purchased a 98 Expedition & when I tried to reset the mileage reader on the odometer panel, everything stopped working. Hopefully this will fix it. Thank you for the video.
Thanks for the info on how to fix this issue, my mom's F150 lariat had this problem. I ended up having to tear the whole dash apart because it was obvious the previous owner had been in there before and a bunch of other things had to be fixed in the process. Though I was pretty pissed when I got it back together and noticed that one of the speedometer lamps had gone out, so half of the speedometer is dark at night meh. The bulbs looked sad (the glass was coated in metal from the filament sputtering) when I had the module apart and in hindsight I should have changed them out with LEDs. I'll have to tear it apart again sometime in the future when I have a day or two to mess with it.
Nicely done. I would recommend that this be done with the cab heated up to at least 70 degrees as the plastic gets brittle and tends to crack/break in colder temps, especially older plastic. Are bad solder joints typical of these Fords? Mine does the same thing... comes and goes like a bad connection. Hopefully just re-seating the connectors will fix it.
AWESOME AWESOME AWSEOME VIDEOS AND i MIGHT ADD YOU ARE A CHRISTIAN..... THE SONG YOU HAVE PLAYING IN THE BACK GROUND "ALREADY THERE" I actually sung at a fund raiser . great job
Great video!!! Very detailed!!! I was curious how long the fix lasted? Did it prove to be a permanent fix? I also noticed the music in the background of your garage!!! God bless you and thank you for the video!!!!
Great video!! We just bought a used 2000 Expedition and it has this very problem. Why do things always show up after you drive away..! O well..But good video and I will use this to fix our problem. Thanks
Awesome video!Just one question before I do this to my truck. Do I need to heat up the solder joints first or just drop the solder onto them. I've only soldered 1/0 cable before, and that was with a torch. Nothing like this.
Thank you I just got my 2000 Expedition today used in awesome condition. But had zero odometer reading. I'm going to assume its the solder issue you point out.
ONE IMPORTANT THING GUYS: I have the actual Ford Expedition Shop Manual, I get the "real ones" for all of my cars. FORD MAKES A HUGE DEAL ABOUT HOW TO DISCONNECT THE BATTERY SO THE POSSIBILITY OF THE AIRBAG DEPLOYING DOESN'T HAPPEN. Their instructions: Disconnect negative from the battery, Disconnect the positive. THERE IS A 3 MINUTE BACKUP CHARGE ON THE AIRBAG SYSTEM. Wait 3 minutes, then go to work on your electrical issue. Good luck!
+Chad Stout great point... Yeah, take it from a firefighter... airbags suck when they deploy in your face when you don't expect it to. Theyll send you flying. Wait a few minutes after disconnecting the battery. The guys at the Ford dealership (Ive got friends there) say they generally use a 10 minute rule.
This video is a money saver! Thank you for taking the time to post up the process. When I watched it I was comfortable with everything except the soldering, something I have never really done. I assume I'm not the only one watching this that might need a few lessons/tips/tricks on soldering, so here is a great 3 video series on soldering: EEVblog #180 - Soldering Tutorial Part 1 - Tools (if the link doesn't work type in the UA-cam search: "EEVblog #180" )
Thanks. I have the same issue with my 2000 Expedition. I also have an issue with my gas gauge. It intermittently works. I suspect the connection are loose. Not sure how I'm going to fix it.
Do you live in California San Diego by chance. I need this done to my Expedition. Seems like a good idea to replace the dash lights at the same time too maybe? Won’t hurt I gussying
This was perfect for this problem. Saved me $1000.00. $150.00 part and $ 900.00 for Ford to program the new cluster.
Whoever you are thanks a bunch.
Youre welcome. Glad this fixed your issue. i didnt realize they would charge that much, wow!!
That was an official quote. You could probably find someone to program it for less than 900 but the dealer, as usual, tryst to take advantage of their mistakes in manufacturing.

I just finished doing this. Took only 1 hour to fix. Thank you very much for sharing the fix

Thank you Harvest, glad this helps. Recently saw Building429 in concert. they were amazing.
I have a 99 Ford Expedition that had the same problem. Thanks to your video, I fixed it. It was exactly the same thing. Your video was great.
Great video, I don't know how you kept it so steady using one hand. Thanks

This is an outstanding video. Thanks. Took me about 1.5 hours total for the repair. thanks for taking the time to post this.
Thanks, I tried this right after watching and it worked great, my odometer was driving me crazy. Thanks for taking the time to make this video.

worked like a charm, from start to finish took about an hour and a half, thank you so much for a great step by step video
Thank you so much for capturing it on video and making the repair simple and easy.
thanks, this was EXTREMELY helpful with fixing my 2003 F150 odometer. Followed your video and it works like a charm.
Someone give this man a medal!!!! Seriously though fr a fellow diyer much thanks good Sir

+treymetzger 56K... wow. And I thought my 99 Expedition had low mles for its age... 181K. It's old, but 40% of it has been replaced lol.
Thank you so much for this video! You were right on! Perfect video of the procedure. My f150 was borne 12/1999 but registered as a 2000. I was a little leery of trying this but....nothing ventured nothing gained. Turned out to be pretty darn easy. Major kudos! Thanks again.

Followed your instructions to fix the odo/trip on my 2000 F-150. Easy to follow and seems to have worked. *crossed fingers*
I used this video to repaint my whole dash and change the cluster lights to red less nice video !
This video was fantastic. It saved me over $200. Thank you very much.
Very good video with excellent background music. I will need to do this and my Expedition just started losing the display on the odometer.

This is next on my to do list. Thanks for the full repair video. It looks very complete.
Thanks, you saved me a lot of time and effort so I am going to find me another way to fix mine. Maybe installing a new one in my tank and a gauge in a pod at the windshield. Thanks again.

Thank a ton!
Thanks for the great feedback on the video. Glad it was easy for you & it worked.
Awesome, thanks to you, i saved me money and time. Was able to get it done in 20 min
Good video. Thanks for all the fine details. I'm going to do this when I replace my blendoor and heater core. All sorts of fun!
Worked great for me the right pin and last 2 on the left I had to re-flow/add some. I could visibly see the crack all the way around the pin. Now it works great!!!
Thanks for the video. I repaired my 2001 Ford F150. Saved some cash.. Thanks!
Also, its a good idea to check all of the bulbs plugged into that circuit board while you've got the unit out. Just check circuit continuity across each bulb to make sure they're not burned out - super easy once you've done the work to remove the unit.
Awesome thank you, I will do this when I strip it all down for the new heater core and blend door retrofit.
Thank you for the repair info. This fixed my 99 expedition.
Your welcome! I didnt know if it was worth posting, but now I am glad I did.
That looks like something that can be done at home. I just purchased a 98 Expedition & when I tried to reset the mileage reader on the odometer panel, everything stopped working. Hopefully this will fix it. Thank you for the video.
Nice video man,......very helpful, I took the cluster out of my 1999 eddie bauer and fix those electrical joints......thnx bud.
Glad the video was helpful, thanks for the good comments!
Worked on my 2000 Expedition. Many thanks!
Looks like the hard part is that shift cable, good video
Nicely done video. I hope this fixes my wife's 2001 Expedition. Thank you.
Great video. Thought l was going to have to replace the cluster. Got tired of banging on the dash to make it work.
Thank you for posting this wonderful video! I am gonna try it on my 2k Expedition.
So helpful! Thank you! (Great choice of music by the way!)
Thank you! shit went bad on both my '00 expedition and my father's '02 F-150. now they both work perfectly.
Great video, very helpful. It fixed my 1999 ford expedition eddie bauer. Thank you very much.
Thanks for the video. Seems to be a common problem with Ford in the early 2000 models because my 2002 is having this problem.
awesome video man, thank you very much, the best video about this HIGHLY COMMON ISSUE on these expeditions.
Thank You SO MUCH Brother! Your video has been a blessing!
Excellent video, well done and very helpful. Got it done in a couple hours.
I just fixed it, even though it was working off and on. it hasn't turned off yet. thanks
Great step by step instructions!
AWESOME AWESOME AWSEOME VIDEOS AND i MIGHT ADD YOU ARE A CHRISTIAN..... THE SONG YOU HAVE PLAYING IN THE BACK GROUND "ALREADY THERE" I actually sung at a fund raiser . great job
Thanks Darrell!
great video! my 01 expedition has 50k miles, had the same problem.
Great, it was very helpful. I also appreciated the background music! God bless you!
Great video!!! Very detailed!!! I was curious how long the fix lasted? Did it prove to be a permanent fix? I also noticed the music in the background of your garage!!! God bless you and thank you for the video!!!!
+harlee fieger Thank you for your comments! Yes, the fix I did is still holding up well...no more flickering or losing the odometer :) Music=awesome
Great video!! We just bought a used 2000 Expedition and it has this very problem. Why do things always show up after you drive away..! O well..But good video and I will use this to fix our problem. Thanks
coffeejunkie33, I just bought one as well. Worked great for a month, now it's off and on. Maybe it's a defect from ford on the 2000's.
Awesome video!Just one question before I do this to my truck. Do I need to heat up the solder joints first or just drop the solder onto them. I've only soldered 1/0 cable before, and that was with a torch. Nothing like this.
great video man very specific and good quality
Great video. Just fixed mine. I wash changing the manifold was that easy.
Thank you I just got my 2000 Expedition today used in awesome condition. But had zero odometer reading. I'm going to assume its the solder issue you point out.
Great video. Love your choice of music btw. Thanks
Thanks for you comments! I was hoping it would be useful for somebody, and I agree the music is great :-)

Your welcome! I agree...with saving $200, if I can I will, besides I like a challenge.
Thank you for making this video.
Great job, Thank you made the repair a snap.
Helpful response for 1999 F-150 also. Thanks.
Thanks for the detailed video.
Very nice video, love the detail. Thanks for posting............tony
Great video!! you did a great job.
Great job showing how to repair. 1 suggestion leave the music off it is a bit distracting. Thank you.
Glad this helped, bummer you have the same problem. Should work good after this fix :-)
Thank You for this!! 🙏🏼🙏🏼
