    I replaced the same gears in a Mercury about 12 years ago. Unfortunately I could not buy them anywhere, so I had to make my own. Worked great after the swap. Sometimes you can hear a noise coming from the dash when they're worn out. The LED's usually will not burn out, but the level of intensity will fade over time. If you don't have a Torx, then you can also squeeze by with a hex key.

    • @helivesonforever
      @helivesonforever 8 років тому

      You can also just sucker up and get a junkyard cluster too. Odometer will be off, but if you're a sensible person like most people aren't, you can put a piece of tape on the cluster and write the mileage of the car, and the mileage of the cluster when installed. That way, you will never lose track. Or you can just swap out the broken parts from the good cluster into your original one.

      No, it was a long time ago. The broken gear looked IDENTICAL to what Chris showed. I used dental impression material. The gear had to be lifted up and rotated into another position to make up for the area that was broken. Worked great.

      @helivesonforever 8 років тому

      electronicsNmore That sounds awesome. I almost think that most car manufacturers use the same products for their odometers. The size might be a little bit different, but the parts are almost always identical from what I've seen.

Spray cold engine (make sure engine isn't hot) with light rinse (don't use power washer). Spray engine with degreaser (i use purple power). Let it sit for 5-10 mins and then lightly scrub. Chris, how I wish you released this video just a week before. I made the mistake and used a napkin to whip mine and it left several scratches :(. Any advice on what to use to clean it? Learning the hard way I threw out all the napkins and stocked up on lots of microfiber towels. Thx in advance.

      Sorry, by cleaning I mean to remove the scratches.

      +Papa Gleb hm, well you can try fine swirl remover but I feel like that might make it worse.

      +ChrisFix thx for the reply but if your not sure then I'll leave it as cause it's a 2017 so I rather not take a chance to make it worse. Thx again. Love the vids and this project so looking forward to more.
      I see you getting the hand of stick shift. It's my fav type of transmission as there is much more fun that can be had with it.

      +Papa Gleb You might try a headlight restore polish compound, they are made for plastic and make headlights look new. Maybe test it on a junkyard cluster first.
