  • Wiring can get tricky sometimes. This is how I advise you to get around feedback on reverse lights when switching your backup cam on.

    Just an observation. You only need to diode isolate the reverse light wire. The other end of the overrride switch is at 12 volts so if you close the switch while the car is in reverse you get no current flow since the potential coming off the reverse wire and the switch is the same. Very well explained write up.

    Yes, this configuration looks like you would have it on when in reverse as well as when you wanted to. For me, having it work with the switch only is fine.

    Great stuff, but I think only 1 diode on the reverse trigger wire might be good if we are just trying to keep the back up light from going on when the switch is closed. Also, a fuse coming from the power source to the switch might be a good thing.

    • @s3uoq
      @s3uoq Рік тому +2

      I thought this too but if you are using a switch with a light in it then that will illuminate when reverse is selected in gearbox. If you only want override switch to light up when using switch then double diode is necessary. This won't matter if it's a non illuminated switch though and a single diode can be used.

      @@s3uoq Right, I was speaking of a basic toggle. An illuminated switch or pilot light will light up from the reverse circuit. Not sure it would be as huge an issue as the back up light coming on but if it's not wanted then, yes, 2 diodes are needed.

    2016 or 2015 silverado I would say find a constantly on 12v like off
    the battery put a diode on it and tie it in on 1739 (red) in the rear
    body junction box with a diode to prevent it from going back up to the
    ignition. Then find an always on neutral like off the battery and tie
    it in on 24 (white) in the rear body junction box with dual diodes to be
    safe (probably not needed since it is a neutral, but just to be safe
    anyway) and then break that neutral thru your switch and it should power
    the rear camera on and off thru your switch. Just my opinion, but
    looks like it would work. 4 diodes 2 wires and a switch should put it
    in business.

    1. How about if I forgot to turn off my switch and suddenly reverse my car, power supply from reverse light and my switch are both triggered? what will happen
    2. My car still using halogen bulbs reverse light maybe about 21watts “guest only” what diode capacity is ideal?

    Looks like he got lost trying to explain (kiss) keep it super simple don't waste time going to taillight if your going to toggle switch just go direct power like you were kinda showing at the end when it looked like you erased your reverse wire but at the end you wanted the wire can we have a part 2 video showing it the simple way with just a toggle switch and if needed the diode for the diode can you use the one that resembles a fuse or is the size to big as it would be easy to crimp a fuse holder and put the diode in there last note check the camera angle (seems like this is your early days keep it up and you'll have a good following )

    This is absurd !! Just connect the reverse wire from the head unit to the reverse wire in the car harness, then connect the red wire (12V) to the red wire on the head unit that is already connected to the accessory wire in the car harness.
    This way the camera is on as soon as you turn the key. It will come on when you go into reverse, and also you can go into the head unit and switch to the rear camera input, and you can watch the rear when driving on the screen.

    couldnt you do the same basic thing, only bypass the reverse connection at the tail light, and run 12 volts thru the switch to the radio reverse, and the camera power? you would have to manually switch the camera on when going into reverse, but it eliminates the need for diodes as well as eliminates the need to tap into the tail light wires.

    Hello, I have installed an Android Radio with rear view camera and this is exactly the problem I am facing right now. I don't want to switch on the camera in reverse but also manually while driving. The problem is known. Then the reverse gear lamp will light up too. I wanted to do the same with the diodes but I didn't know how. Your video explains a lot more. I already have a switch for my USB charger in the front. I would like to steal the 12+ from this switch and send it to the camera.
    But what I don't understand is, why is it not enough to install a diode in front of the reverse lamp? do I have to install 2 diodes? Would there be a short circuit if I installed only 1 diode, because the 12+ goes from the reverse lamp to the switch? I happen to have an SR260 m10? diode. would that work too?

    Seems like an overly complicated way of doing things. This video suggests you need a switch and diodes (soldering, presumably) to arrange things, but I highly suspect that most head units (especially after-market) already have circuits in place to do this; just need to wire it correctly.
    He is right that the radio will be "looking" for a 12v trigger for the back-up camera. So you have a choice. If you want the camera to be on only when in reverse, then you can share the same circuit with the radio and the reverse (lights). If you want to be able to view the camera whenever the car is on, then the camera must be supplied by accessory power (running lights will often be able to this). The radio should not share the same 12v reverse circuit in this case. For the radio to automatically switch to the camera when in reverse though, it still needs to be wired in to the reverse circuit.

    so i got a 98 cav. bought a cheap radio cause i wasnt sure this would work anyway. on my video wire (yellow) each end has a red wire on each side which i assume is the 12 volt wire. i spliced this wire into the red wire on my pig tail of my radio which says its 12 volts. on the other end i dont know where to put it so i spiced into the red wire that draws power from the reverse light and i spliced the ground into the ground wire on my park lights. did i wire this wrong? needless to say it did not work.

Have you just ignored the video cable between cam and monitor? Less dumb question, maybe:- I'd like to power mine from an ignition-on 12V to use as a rearview mirror replacement in a van, but I'm not sure if there is a source in the rear light assembly. Should there be one in there somewhere? If not, do you reckon it's ok to power it from the tail light rather than backup light? I'll then put the side lights (running lights) on to use the rear view. I don't want to have to run a ign-on cable all the way from the front.

    Wouldn't you only need one diode on the tail light? If the switch is off isn't that acting as a diode and if its left on when in reverse I don't think it would hurt anything, because you would be adding voltage to account for any drop from the extra wires. Not that diodes are expensive and I like the idea of isolating things for safety, I'm just wondering if there is a need for it.

    Great video! I just liked & subbed! ------------- BUT! Now I have a question for ya! If I am not wanting the camera on anytime I want it, just when in reverse, could I tap into the reverse light pos and rev light neg wires at the light which is right next to the camera of course, then run the vid cable and the reverse signal turn on wire (if that is what the other wire even is? SEE other question below) to the head unit?
    The reason I ask is before i found your video, i watched others that showed it done this way and i went ahead and run the wires as i wait for my head unit to arrive. Hoping I did not screw up and have to redo all i done because it was a pain in my 2011 prius to run the wires from the top of the hatch(where the tag is) down to the tail light then all the way to the front of the car!
    Also just to be sure, the video rca cable also has a little red-pigtail on each end of it. ----- I could not find out for sure about this pigtail so to be safe i went ahead and ran another wire from the rear pigtail to the front pigtail,(the red short wire found on each end of the video rca cable) just incase i am right and this wire will be used to let the HUnit know when to switch to cam by connecting it to the wire labeled reverse on the hu's wiring harness. Am I right or am I all screwed up???
    Thanks! PLEASE HELP!

    single pole double throw is simpler. no need for diodes. youre already going to put a switch in so just go with the spdt. you even said "diodes get hot" diodes get hot = more likely failure.
    the only benefit to this is if the switch fails you will still get the camera in reverse. if the spdt fails. you have no camera.

    Exactly what I wanted. However if I am going to add a second LCD screen (A 5 or 7 inch el chepo chines), dedicated to for the Second reverse camera! Wouldn't that be a good idea, for all time electronic rear view mirror, as my truck gives me very poor coverage through optical mirror (Lifted truck and what not). I ask this because of many reasons. First the current back up camera has Wide angel lens so really not suitable for permanent view and then has those not needed Stop / Waring lines for parking. Then By not messing with car's OEM system, I may cause less chance of damage to the HU, and camera that are going to be one 24/7, when car running. Additionally beside choosing a camera that has closer to normal human eye field of view, I am going to hang it on top of the back of the car or behind the rear glass, and not low, at bumper level, that again should give me a more realistic view of the back without making objects small/large or causing distortion of distance judgment. And who knows, may be in a future, a more sophisticated model, I may add two horizontally placed cameras to feed the same one screen, an turning the system into a passive LG type 3D picture that doesn't need a 3D glass to see 3D!!!! In this scenario, do I need to connect both the red wires of the LCD and 2nd dedicated back camera mirror, to an IGN red wire from under dash fuse box? Thanks man and you are a good teacher.

For example, 12volt 6amp diode from the battery plus 12 volt 6amp diode from the reverse light. Let say the switch is turned on while in reverse gear at the same time. Is it necessary to add two 6 amp fuses after each diode? Is it safe for two powers to be on at the same?

    Also, with your last picture, seems with the placing of the tail light Diode, would prevent that tail light from working at all, correct?

    • @yss2685
      @yss2685 5 років тому

      No. It is just a tapped/jumped connection to (+) on tail light and it is not tail light's main power connection. Tail light is getting its power from a different source/switch that car has. Jumping to that connection is just providing you with a sense connection (when tail light is powered on).

      If connected to the radio it will be on the backup display. You could put two toggle switches one for the receiver one for the camera but if you direct connect the camera to say the battery it will be on all the time and run your battery dead.

    • @brucebeverly2629
      @brucebeverly2629 6 років тому

      Rob - Yes, the right way is to power the camera (+) lead from the ACC (Accessory) Red lead on the wiring harness behind the radio. The camera (-) lead connects to Audio GND (black) lead on the wiring harness behind the radio. The radio and camera will power ON and OFF together, as a properly designed system. Yes, these two power wires to the camera will be long, but they will be free of large ground currents elsewhere in your vehicle that will cause image distortion and possibly loss of sync with the radio video decoder. The Reverse lamp (+) lead connects ONLY to the radio's Reverse In input, which signals it to display your camera image when your vehicle is in reverse.

    Hi just watched this tutorial vid and it was great. I have a question. Instead of running an alternative 12v power supply to have a switch, Can also wiring the reverse camera to the Park lights and then turning the park lights on acts as the on/off switch for the camera? ( obviously the diodes will still be needed)

  • @MrNatesluvs
    @MrNatesluvs 9 років тому

    Oh come on. How long you been doing this? First off from the camera just hook up the red wire to the positive wire on the light that turns on when you put your car in reverse. Second run a wire from you units back up power, usually light purple with a stripe to the same hot wire. Camera can be turned on from the head unit will also automatically switch on when gear in placed in reverse. No need for switches or diodes. How silly.

    Nice video ! Thanks for doing it! Here is my setup : Im running Front and Rear Cameras to Head unit utilizing both a toggle switch 2 Pole center off i.e. , ON/OFF/ON AND A SWITCH TO CONTROL Video feed and trigger the correct camera. The 2 Pole Toggle will control the front camera when I want it in the ON position constantly. I figure I need one diode at the Reverse Power on Tail light and one below the Head Unit where the diode makes contact with the trigger wires. The 2 Pole Toggle will have an adapt fuse before going to 12 Volts . The Head unit will also have an inline fuse to power . I have a schematic I could email if it would make life easier?Question : will 2 diodes be sufficient? Thanks Get Up and Go aka Papa

      It would turn on anytime you used the switch. Effectively making it the same as a room with a light switch VS motion sensor. The switch adds a step but also versatility because you can turn it on when ever you want it.

  • @seansinay8797
    @seansinay8797 9 років тому

    If your switch is on when you go into reverse, you'll have an overvolt situation since both +12v sources will be in series with the head unit and the camera.. This is not the correct way to do this

    • @maddog9659
      @maddog9659 9 років тому +5

      Sean Sinay 12VDC plus + 12VDC = 12VDC, you can't produce overvoltage at the load with a 12VDC Source, hook up 12 different wires from source to load and you'll still have 12VDC

      Lessco Electronics makes sense...one other question, do you have to bring the camera power wire back to the splice with the diodes? or can you just wire it to the reverse light in the back? and if you could do it this way do you still do the double diode isolation off the tail light and the switch?

    • @Chemistmenace
      @Chemistmenace 10 років тому +1

      Skulskit
      Short answer: Yeah you have to bring it back.
      Long answer: If you wire it directly to the reverse light, your camera WILL get power. The problem is that if you don't bring the camera power wire back, your display WON'T get power and it WON'T recognize that the camera is on (it will think it's off). Therefore you will not see the camera's video on your display.
      Note: These backup cams are already designed in the simplest way possible, and there really aren't any shortcuts. If there was an easier way, they'd be doing it already.
