In real history, Nagato was based on Tokugawa Ieyasu's fourth son, Matsudaira Tadakichi. He was very outstanding and served as a vanguard general in the Battle of Sekigahara, which determined Japan's ruling power. He also obtained the enemy's head and was awarded the title after the war. Born in the land, but died very young due to old wounds from the war and malignant tumors.

Also Nagakado never dies in the book.

Toranaga’s son always annoyed me for being so clueless… when he died in such a dumb way, the only reason I didn’t completely lose it was the significant comfort I got from not having to see him on screen again

@@sofimr However, I think Nagakado in this version is based on Ieyasu’s third and fourth son. While the aforementioned fourth son died young, the third son, Tokugawa Hidetada, is known to be rash and foolhardy.
      (Minor spoiler)
The battle between Toranaga and Ishido in real life is called “the Battle of Sekigahara”.
At first, the Tokugawa (Toranaga) force was supposed to be double the size of those of Ishida (Ishido). Tokugawa Ieyasu divided his army into 2 parts: His main army in the south and the back up army led by his son in the north, while telling his son specifically that whenever he met hostile lords in the northern provinces, don’t attack them in full force. Just keep marching to join his father in the battlefield and what did his son do? He attacked the hostile northern lords in full force AND LOST, which made him late to his father’s battle and put his father in a very dangerous situation.

I liked him. I can sympathize with his position. Why do you call him clueless? He isn't seeing all the things we see nor getting all the information we get. Toranaga loves putting people in positions where they have no choice but to make up their own minds without knowing what is best. This would be difficult for a Japanese samurai who needs to be loyal while also not endangering his leader (and in this case his father too).

Toranaga's son is kinda like Jace, but more brawn and less brain. They were raised to look up to their parents, but also scared of living in their shadows. I guess that's the entire struggle of nepo babies.

Being a "kaishakunin" (selected to be second) was usually considered bad, which is why it was generally done by a friend who would volunteer for the job out of their care for you in particular (to make sure it was done properly). Basically your bestest buddy was the only one who would willingly risk their own honour to save yours.
As I read somewhere: "Doing it correctly doesn't give you any glory, but failing is a mark of shame". The failed dduty of kaishakunin most of the times ended up with the seppuku of the kaishakunin. Thats why is so fcked up that Toranaga was selected to be second as a kid.

Odd (yet seemingly deliberate) contradictions in this episode:
    (1) Toranaga warmly offers his brother a night of celebration and rest, but privately reveals that he can’t stand his brother
    (2) The Lady of the Willow World (Gin) points out that Toranaga doesn’t make careless mistakes (such as leaving his garrison so carelessly exposed to threats) but Toranaga silences her suspicions
    (3) Toranaga gives the Willow World lady what she wants in his will after initially denying her request
    (4) Toranaga checks Buntaro’s emotions and refuses to release Mariko from her life (despite no apparent reason to spare her life any longer)
    (5) Toranaga refers to Blackthorne as a barbarian after going through so much effort to recognize him as a Hatamoto
    (6) Toranaga surrenders to his brother and publicly shuts down Crimson Sky, but allows Blackthorne to just insult his men and leave (after Mariko - in an earlier scene - clearly warns him to be respectful)
There is more going on here than meets the eye. I almost feel as if a future episode will show all the “plans within plans” that were hidden throughout this episode. Toranaga’s brother (Lord Saeki) asked Toranaga’s son (Nagakado) if he preferred “stories” and “legends” over the simple, awful truth. I think this was a lesson both for Nagakado and for the audience (and a lesson about death that I don’t think Nagakado ever really understood).

00:04 "I want to see lady Ochiba what she had to go through". You hit the nail on the head. In episode 6 Ochiba just said she had to go through "unmentionable" things. In the book Ochiba has a dark secret. Toronaga knows this secret. That is why ochiba wants to destroy Toronaga. The book has it all. Do you want to know what that secret is? 😁
