She's not giving him a plan. She's telling him she's aware he has a plan. She asks him, why didn't he have a spy that told him about this big army moving towards his poorly defended garrison? Seems kiiinda dumb for someone of Toranaga's smarts hmm? So she's fairly comfortable talking about her future plans, because she believes there's a future.

This also tracks with Toranaga's flaw of him refusing to trust anyone with his plans, even his own son. This stubborn nature of keeping his plans secret to himself led his son to be reckless and get himself killed. Maybe the remaining episodes will also have him realizing his mistake in his unwillingness to trust anyone

Toranaga is a tactician, a specialist in political, social and military affairs , this episode showed how long or old he has survived in this lifestyle and won and survived battles, he has a plan and he is always two steps ahead of anyone, he fooled the council when he left and revoked his position, and he sees the value in the barbarian everyone wants to kill already. There is no way he is surrendering.

When a warrior takes the head of his opponent after a battle, he does so to show his lord what deeds of valour he has performed. If he took the head of a samurai of high rank, he would show his head as proof and receive a reward to match his deeds. The heads of lower-ranking samurai were not taken as they were not eligible for rewards. It was necessary to verify the identity of the dead person.
A warlord who loses a battle commits seppuku, thereby asking the victor to forgive his men. He took responsibility and in many cases his men were forgiven and survived.

He gets led into a brazen assassination of a messenger on someone else's leash, and while this ends up serving Toranaga's needs, he tries to emphasize for Nagakado how foolish it is to be manipulated by others. He tries to teach him this repeatedly with his birds and otherwise. To teach him patience, awareness, and strategic caution. Instead, the lesson that Nagakado learns is, bafflingly, that he needs to be braver and more assertive. He suffers the consequences of learning that very wrongheaded lesson.

The thing I really can’t get over once I heard it in another video is the subtle power of translation and it’s role in the storytelling
For example Mariko is given both power and burden in her translations, so often she’s tweaking people’s words on the fly to almost imbue ever so slightly different meaning or changing things slightly to be more palatable either for the social standing, the situation or to diffuse potential confrontation.
It’s really fascinating, I think at face value you sort of think she’s giving a true translation and there’s one or two changed words but those extra words here or there can change the entire meaning, have a different impact and can change the intent behind the original words, it sort of goes back to Blackthorne getting the hard lesson on the weight of words.

    Guys, I have a theory:
If you go back to episode 6, near the end, when Mariko goes back to Toranaga’s tent to report on how Blackthorne’s night at the Tea House went, at the beginning of that scene, you’ll see Toranaga folding up a paper and throwing it into the fire in front of him. Whenever he’s about to make crucial war decisions, you always see him receiving or sending messages through his spies. I think the message we were not allowed to see on that paper MUST be related to the Crimson plan he has unfolding.
It is also not a surprise then when we see his go-to SPY guy in episode 7 when his half brother is being welcomed into the village by the villagers. They focus in on him, which I think is subtly telling us “remember the role of Toranaga’s spies in relation to who you are seeing on screen.”
If this is all true, this would make Shogun one of the smartest shows on television because they really plant seeds and expect their audience to be smart enough to connect the dots because nothing is “filler” or used to kill time on each episode.
What do you guys think?? Let me know.

Yes. She knows. I’m thinking when Toranaga was away a few episodes back, he had visited his brother, and this is all a part of his plan to get into Osaka. Fighting from within. This has to flip. Toranaga is far too smart to have fallen into this trap. But his dim witted son again acted rashly, and paid for it. I think in a way, his uncle had warned him, while still playing his part.

    Yoshii Toranaga = Tokugawa Ieyasu

    Yoshii Toranaga = Tokugawa Ieyasu
    1563-1646/ 83 years old
Buntaro Toda Hirokatsu = Tadaoki Hosokawa
A handsome man who has trained in martial arts and culture with the aim of becoming the strongest samurai.
He went into his first fight at the age of 15 and it was a great job.
He received a handwritten letter of appreciation from Nobunaga and became Nobunaga's favorite.
Tadaoki had the shortest temper in the Sengoku period.
Even if the enemy soldiers surrendered, he killed them all.
(At this time, his superiors are warned not to kill those who surrender.)
How he thinks about training his subordinates
The second time was fine, but the third time was a death sentence.
Tadaoki Hosokawa, the strongest berserker of the Sengoku period
The most beloved wife of the Sengoku period
He loved his wife very much anyway.
    1582
He deeply loved Tama (Garasha), her legal wife, and did not divorce her even after her father, Mitsuhide Akechi, caused the Honnoji Incident, and imprisoned her in order to avoid her death penalty. However, Tadaoki frequently visited this area, and Garasha gave birth to a child.
In order to free himself from Garasha's captivity, he rampages through the battlefield like a demon.
Tadaoki's war exploits were recognized and the prisoners of Garasha were released.
Tadaoki was jealous of Garasha and locked her up while her subordinates watched and did not let her leave her room.
Garasha heard the story of Christ from Tadaoki.
    he was interested
Garasha was happily talking to Tadaoki about various things.
As a result, she was baptized without telling Tadaoki.
Around this time, Christianity had already been recognized as a xie jiao and had begun to be eliminated, so she begged Garasha to quit.
However, when Garasha stubbornly refused, Tadaoki became furious and cut off the nose and ears of her maid who helped her baptize.
Garasha was angry at this and stopped talking to Tadaoki.
Because Garasha didn't talk to her.
Tadaoki also tacitly approved of this idea.
Tadaoki has been married for 10 years, but when he went on an expedition to fight,
Tadaoki frequently wrote letters to Garasha.
    1600
His wife Tamako (Garasha), who was in Osaka Castle's Hosokawa residence, was attacked by Ishida Mitsunari (Ishido) and refused to be taken hostage, but since suicide is prohibited in Christianity, his senior vassal Hidekiyo Ogasawara was attacked by Garasha. attacked. finished. mediated
Explosives were placed in the mansion so that Garasha's body would not be left behind.
Hidekiyo Ogasawara committed suicide by self-immolation.
Tadaoki holds Garasha's funeral at the church.
    1563-1600 37 years old
Children are 3 boys and 2 girls

    John Blackthorne = Anjin Miura
    1564-1620 56 years old
He became Tokugawa Ieyasu's 250 koku hatamoto and spent his entire life in Japan.

As the madam observed he could have seen his brother’s army move to cut him off with only one spy. And Toranaga even had a spy planted at this formerly unimportant fishing village. Wouldn’t he Also have a spy to tell him what his brother was up to? I think he’s acting like he’s defeated to lull his enemies into thinking they’ve won. Maybe he’s made asecret alliance with the Christian regents (the priest was saying they should make Toranaga an ally. Obviously he hasn’t told his vassals (or his son) about whatever plan he has but I’m sure he has a plan.

I am positive John and Toronaga have plan. John walking off in the end was weird. They don’t take him seriously so he could be setting up whatever and no one would pay much attention to the barbarian.

I agree , I think Toronaga and John may have planned john's outburst , giving john time to prepare something while everyone is sitting there , but who knows ....maybe it was just an outburst :) , excited for the next episode!!!

while this is probably the case (and i haven't seen episode 8 yet), i wonder that the only way they could communicate something so elaborate would be through mariko. and she hasn't betrayed any knowledge of it.

Toranaga’s brother can now ally with him as he can expect more than a regency. He is now heir to the shogun.

Nice to have dropped by with your channel guys! By the way, about the Shogun, which I really like to follow episode by episode would only make me lose my breath waiting for the next episode. What i thought is that in the next episode, I could have imagine to create my own story that Torunaga will ask a fight with his brother a samurai way, and who won will take the army . Then, probably, ishido who is waiting for them not realizing that what comes their way is a marching warriors of Torunagas battle with him. Haha. There must have been a Samurai draw an epic exhibition for excitement. Anyways, just want these days to passed by waiting for the next.

If Toronaga’s son had done the job, would it been difficult to be escorted to Ishido?
