Really nice of you to break down the names of the important historical figures that were mentioned. I lost my mind at the Oversimplified video because I do understand Chinese.
I've been waiting for this video. Just to add in. Emperor Ling's "older brother"(the General against the eunuchs) was actually He Jin, the older brother of Empress He aka the Emperor's consort. Dong Zhuo was actually "invited" by He Jin and Yuan Shao to the capital to kill the eunuchs, though after He Jin died, he had plans on his own. After his death, Dong Zhuo's corpse burned for several days when lit, because of the amount of fat he had.
Liu Bei wasn't a peasant at all, he was son and grandson to 2 governors and his uncle was rich enough to send him to "university". The reason a lot of people called him poor was because after losing his father at a young age he and his mother made a living by selling sandals, but they were still part of a family rich enough to send him to study from a very prestigious teacher.
Why does Liu Bei hold a halberd? I think you may have mistaken him for Lu Bu. In the novel, Liu Bei uses a pair of long swords. Technically, Cao acted with or I would even say under Yuan Shao after the coalition for the quelling of the Black Mountain Bandits, against Yuan Shu and Gongsun Zan. Only when he gained the control over the imperial court, Cao goes on his separate way from Yuan Shao, but even then he had to appease him by giving him a higher court rank than his.
The long sword Liu Bei use was an imperial treasure passed down in royal family (or at least he claimed so), which he used to prove he has royal bloodline.
Well, if we're talking about the actual history, below is something from the South Song Dynasty Annotations to the Records of the Three Kingdoms, 《云别传》Records on Zhao Yun. During the battle of Changban, when Zhao Yun charged into the Wei army, the Records on Zhao Yun had this to say: 先主之败,有人言云已北去者,先主以手戟擿之曰:子龙不弃我走也! The late lord retreated, and when someone said Yun has went North (gone over to Wei's side), the late lord threw his hand-halberd at the speaker, saying: "Zi Long will not leave me!". The hand halberd was about the same size as a one-handed Norse battle axe, usable for both close combat and throwing. Liu Bei, however, like most commanders, would've most likely used a spear or a full-sized halberd on the battlefield. He would've definitely had a sword, but just as a symbol of status, as Chinese swords (jian) were rarely used practically on the battlefield. (Apologies for blabbing and intruding on your notifications two years late to the party)

Love this episode: I am actually glad that the coverage gave Sun Jian the credit he deserves, he was quite a daring commander, unfortunately a lot of his achievements were retroactively accredited to Liu Bei's band. 2 quick little points: Cao Cao did not declare his faction as wei just yet. I know a lot of works describe the era by labeling Liu Bei as ruler of Shu, Sun Quan as ruler of Wu, and Cao Cao in turn as the ruler of Wei. But he never dared to depose the Han Emperor and elevate himself in their stead (seeing the bloody results for Dong Zhuo and Yuan Shu) instead he ruled as the chancellor of Han and the power behind the throne. Another is that Dong also killed the 1st young emperor (Emperor Shao) he laid his hand on * Also props for making the eunuchs all Varys 👌😎

It happens to me all the time, and I can brush off the stuff that’s occurring around the same time due to special events or situations, but most of my “eureka” moments happen with completely unrelated situations.

Great video! But one mistake made was, Cao Cao wasn't the King of Wei (not even a Duke) at that time. He was just an ordinary general/warload. After he invited the emperor to XuChang, the emperor named him prime minister only.
Sun Jian's army has max drill and +20% discipline, which countered Dong's infantry combat ability and terrain advantage. When he found the imperial seal the army gained additional +10% morale bonus.

I love the animation for this segment. I can see inspiration from Chinese art in the depiction of the Peach Garden Oath.
The art for this video is amazing!
I love you guys and your work, but as someone fluent in Chinese...
Your pronunciation of "Guan Yu" and "Cao Cao" almost killed me xD
...tao tao
What about sun jian?
Swen jien? Liu Bu? Tao Tao? Lmao that made me laugh
I totally did not understand Guan Yu.
Pronounced as GUUU-ONE YWEE
English speakers have the same feeling when Chinese people try to pronounce certain English names and words.
Romance of the Three Kingdoms was one of my favorite games for a long time, and the Three Kingdoms period of Chinese history is one that fascinates me. I am really hyped to see the Total War franchise's take on it. Also loving this series as well, although for the most part I was already familiar with the wide brushings of this saga. I hope Extra History finds some time in this series to reference Cao Cao's role in editing, commenting, and preserving "The Art of War" book for modern audiences.
A Game of Thrones: The Chinese edition.
I think many past events in history are their own Game of Thrones, only with less dragons and magic.
Wait.
Excuse me they are the OG GoT
@@sertiana2512 Who is to say that China did not use dragons and magic? After all. China lost more history than most of Europe could ever count.
@@Qardo of course, they got like thousands of years of real history, unlike Western history starts to be more relevant during the time of the Greeks and Rome.
It really is, isn't it?
Ooh. I wonder if Jeff Van Dyck is working on the soundtrack again this time around! His website doesn't mention it though. His absence from Empire: TW was conspicuous for me. With Nobuo Uematsu and Andreas Waldetoft he's in the "God-Tier" on my "videogame soundtrack makey-type-people" tier list. Thanks for attending this TED talk.
All the oversimplified fans came to Extra Credits, who punished him severely.
What happened?
*them
Finally, thank you Extra Credits. Keep up the good work.
To pronounce "Cao Cao", just combine the "ts" in "cats" and "ow" in "cow".
and repeat
Thanks, I'll just call him Cat-Cow from now on
@@PBoten good for you bro
So Tsjæov?
So, Chao Chao?
Everything is of excellent quality, as always. But I really must say your choice of color scheme- kept very consistent- is striking and well done.
Ah the Romance of the Three Kingdoms... when a video game with simple (yet fun) gameplay tought me more than every history book could ever do
I thought the game was not released yet?
@@sarasamaletdin4574 I meant Dynasty Warriors ;)
I liked the art style, I see now that every extra history has an art style inspired or somehow unique of every story.
With every picture of Zhang FEI looking like he's screaming I'd like to imagine that he just never stop screaming that he was always angry
AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!
Yes! Yes! Yes! Thank you Total War! I've been wait, hoping, praying that Extra Credits would do a series on the Three Kingdoms period. Finally! It's here! And I'm all the way hyped!!
A while After watching this video I continued reading a manga called wortenia senki about a martial arts expert getting transported to another world and slowly conquering that world. There was a reference to this part of Chinese history in the chapter I am reading right now. It’s crazy how often and quickly recently acquired knowledge comes into play! It happens to me all the time, and I can brush off the stuff that’s occurring around the same time due to special events or situations, but most of my “eureka” moments happen with completely unrelated situations.
I’m Korean and although I work in the music industry , the epic of the 3 kingdoms is what got me to love history and almost pursue a career in history
I been a long time fan of your channel and I’m so happy to see you covering this !!
Thank you Extra Credits History team!
Oversimplified AND Extra History?! WOOT WOOT
_if only it were in Cantonese_
I have ALWAYS wanted y’all to cover this! Thank you
For those interested in this, check out Three Kingdoms (the 2010 series). It’s on UA-cam and has English subs!
This series will be so fun! Can't wait for more.
FEEL THE POWER OF MY MAGGIIIICCCCC!
USELESS USELESS HAHAAHHAA!
You flamming idiots take that!
Throwing gaint rocks and winds
A dike? Oh no!
I was waiting for so many days for three kingdoms now finally got it thanks guys
So excited for the game and it's great to learn about the history
Love the new art style and colour palette
Why did you give Liu Bei Lu bu's halberd? That's just making things unnecessarily confusing.
confuciung*
Love the art style of the episode!
"The Azure Sky is already dead; the Yellow Sky will soon rise.
When the year is jiazy there will be prosperity under heaven!"
Long Live the Yellow Turban Rebellion.
YES! My favorite time period of China! Thanks so much Extra Credits! Love the vids❤️
It sounds like he was explaining some D&D story line.
Seeing that this is about to go down has sent chills through me. Super stoked.
What a coincidence, I just finished watching The version made by Oversimplified ^^ now to see the full version by Extra History ^^ yay.
This is so awesome! I'm actually reading the Romance of the Three Kingdoms right now!
90% of the comments-Oversimplified things
10% of the comments-the rest of them.
IM SO EXCITED FOR THIS SERIEEEES!!!! THANK YOU GUYS SO MUCH!!!
I know it's apocryphal but
"may you live in interesting times"
Hello Extra Credits vidmakers, thanks for doing a vid to help our foreign friends understand this bit of exquitise Chinese History. Love from Hong Kong😃
the amount of Oversimplified jokes will lead to an economic downturn
Dude.uncool
Clearly they've lost their mandate from heaven. well time to gather up all the yellow turban boys and start another rebellion yee-haw
I’ve been waiting for this video for so long I’m so happy it’s here!!!!
"Well,Here we go again"
-Oversimplified Fans
So, Me.
. Cao Cao was a warlord when he took the emperor in, but this is decades before he named his territories “Wei”. He didn’t take that title until well after Yuan Shao was defeated at Guan du.
Extra Credits *VS* OverSimplified
*FIGHT!!!!*
I really Love the different artstyle
Frick yea! I have been waiting for this forever!
The art in this new series is just stunning
The Three Kingdoms is the Chinese version war of the Roses. Don't @ me.
Edit: Geez guys. It's just a joke.
The Wars of the Roses didn't actually have much fighting over 30 years there where only around 21 battles
Three kingdoms>> European clumsy squabbles
Except that the Wars of the Roses were the European version of the Three Kingdoms Period, because the Three Kingdoms Period superceded the Wars of the Roses by 1,500-odd years.
Where does Japan's time of the Warring States fall into this ?
Or the Roman crisis of the Third Century, that's a better one. 1) It's the same period. 2) Similarly large empires. Except the Roman Empire did survive. Barely.
I love the colour palette for this episode!
