A big thing I want to mention about Ghostrunner that makes it so perfect No fucking loading screens mid-level Every time you die. Press a button. Restart at the checkpoint. No loading, no bullshit, you just GO. It’s SO goddamn smooth and I wish more games were capable of this kind of flow
Exactly. There's 0 downtime, the punishment is the lost of at most a minute or two on some of the more complex combat encounters. This is why fromsoft games didn't (and to some extent still don't) appeal to me, because dying not just loses you resources but also often a lot of time to backtrack just to die again and again.
Fun fact: there's actually a Neon White mod that has community medals that are faster than the secret red medals and are sometimes updated when a new skip is found to keep it interesting
@@sandymangamin7159Unfortunate you didn't find out organically, I just had a level I really liked and was playing through cutting the time, then boom red medal. I'm glad you showed a quick snippet of Katana Zero, but I think it's understated how good that game is at this. It doesn't achieve it by placing you against other players with times (there is a time trial mode that does), but because it shows you a replay at full speed + without showing your time slow, it makes you feel like a literal god and dammit if I don't want to see my little replay beat the level as fast as humanly possible
I think my favorite was learning how to parry in real time without the slow! Then just being able to enjoy the replay without needing to worry about timing was just great sometimes!

Onw of my personal favorite speedrun games is a tiny little indie called Furi, its a boss ruch game with some of the most interesting and engaging fights I've played since Cuphead or Dark Souls. It's also like 4 hours long on your first playthrough so its really easy to grind out runs, especially wiht its built-in speedrun mode that skips all the dialogue and cutscenesm 100% percent recommend of you're looking for a quick little speedrun game
One of my favorite games to watch speed ran is an older title called Mirror’s Edge. It’s a fast paced FPP, first person parkour, game that just looks amazing when played flawlessly. I have never picked up the game myself, I am trash at got-to-go quick games, but it’s a titles that I’ll continuously go back and watch speed runners play on UA-cam.
I'm probably on the fence about speedruns: on one hand - speed runs are incredible to watch and extremely helpful to getting around games. On the other hand, I prefer playing all games at my own pace and savor the world, story and characters
That's the neat part: often you can play both styles. Take celeste: your first playthrough will probably be like 20-40 hours, because you will take your time, see the story, think about the platforming, find secrets But then you played every single level, and ask yourself "what if I just tried to play first level again?", and that level that you've spent an hour at first, you will get through in like 5 minutes. Then you try the second level... And you're hooked It's kind of amazing how there is literally two games: one for slow and enjoyable playthrough, and one for speedruning; all in one package
Most people speed run games after they beat it regularly the first time. Do you really think it’s feasible to casually speed run a game while going in blind?
You might be thinking of the more popularized speedrunning that Circle mentioned early in the video, where player speedruns a game that wasn't designed for it. But in the later parts of the video he talks about games that are designed around individual level runs, that may or may not have more self paced story and other elements in between speeding through those individual levels. Key difference being, a game designed for individual level speedrunning usually doesn't try to tell a story or introduce characters while your're going fast. They do it in between when you're not being timed. That way you can get both an entertaining story and fast gameplay in a way that meshes well.
While you can do both I definitely prefer to do the slow one every time. I just like to indulge in the world. I like games where I can forget who I even am until I stop playing.
CYBER HOOK MENTIONED?! UNBELIEVABLY BASED, CIRCLE I've been waiting for so long to see this game get more recognition, it goes so hard (we don't talk about the last level)

as someone who got a little too into speedrunning ultrakill, thank you for not over-glorifying its speedrunning-ness, of course it's a main thought of the devs, i mean, the level ranks with millisecond timers make that pretty obvious, but there's barely anything hidden behind "going fast", it's a lot more just "look online to see if i'm faster than the others". ultrakill is mainly focused on making you feel unstoppable in a VERY stylised environment, the speedrunning just comes naturally with the amount of tech hakita lets you do
My first contact was with the introduction of the platformer mode in geometry dash. Really nice change of gameplay style when trying to shed of every millisecond ;)
The grapple didn't really feel right to me in Cyber Hook, I found Verlet Swing to be a much better grapple speedrunning game. Edit: It's also 80% off on Steam atm.

Like beating hollowknight on the permadeath mode. I would rather do anything else.
Great video, glad to know I have some games I could give a chance sometime. Neon Whites probably what I'd play first. Okay now the rest of the comments unrelated but I didnt want to waste the topic: reading the title of this video before clicking had me thinking about how even if your not a speedrunner, theres plenty of games with easy speedrun tricks that just become "You do it cuz." My own personal example is I am one of maybe 5 or 6 people who would say they enjoy Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, and I've learned dialouge skips, actual map skips, abused the hell out of grenade jumps, and has also abused a fair amount of bugs that solely benefit you. I still cant explain clearly what it is about the game that makes it fun to just fly through, but its honestly a lot of fun. I am commiting sacrilege by saying I've played and mastered this more than I have 2.
"Smash stuff" levels in Sunset Overdrive is the only game I've played so far like this. I loved them. I got into the top 1000 on all of them, and the top 100 on a couple.
Marble Skies also falls under this type of game and I highly recommend it if you are a fellow marble fan who likes going fast, insane tricks, and funky bounce physics.
1. I loved the video, very informative, funny, and had really good pacing.... Almost like it was a satisfying run in a speedrun lmao 2. Warstrider Challenges is also another really neat micro speed running game that i feel is under appreciated!
If you love this type of game, then you should check out - Warstride Challenges Doom eternal but even faster - SEUM: Speedrunners from Hell Pure platformer with tiny puzzle levels - Hot Lava Mirror's Edge but the floor is lava
If you like first person speedrun shooters, I highly suggest checking out Anger Foot and Mullet Mad Jack. Both were released this year and are highly addicting.
It's the essence of time trials, I can loose myself even in basic games like realistic car sims if they have time trial modes, the fun is in the battle with the physics systems when fighting for fractions of a second.
I used to play time trials in Mirrors Edge on the Xbox360 and pass the controller to my friends or brother and all these games seem like great ways to get that nostalgia
I saw ultrakill in the compilation at the start, but speedrunning a level to the point of breaking it in that game is so satisfying and shockingly easy.
My favorite parts of ghost runner, Celeste, super meat boy; all these types of game is when late into the game you hit a hard level that you breeze through first try and realize you’ve mastered a skill you would not or possibly COULD not have done before
Imagine that feeling of flawless speed run execution but against another player in a pvp arena. Now add massive mechs. Now go play titanfall 2 Heheheheheh
my first micro-speedrunning game was a Duck Game arcade mode. Same feel of grinding, same secret fifth medal, skips and technics improvements as neon white AND later you can use this skills to dominate your friends in pvp mode
This feels like I went back in time. I remember watching either Noodle or Funke’s video about some of these games. Feels unreal that they’re actually out now.
Wonderful video as usual! Very funny and well animated. Really liking these more long form ones, you really get to delve into a topic. And what a topic it was! These games all slap. You also mentioned a handful of games I’m gonna def add to my wishlist, like Kick Bastards and Cyber Hook. Huge fan of platformers. I have all but 2 achievements in Neon White, that game was so fun. Don’t have it in me atm to do the “beat the game in one life” achievements, but man, this game was good. Fantastic soundtrack as well. I forgot about how good the Insight mechanic was. So cool to see “oh shit, there’s a whole other route I was completely oblivious to” and try to master that one. Pizza Tower is incredibly fun as well. Very wonky to start off, but feels great once you get a handle on the controls. Very satisfying to figure out the proper pathing to get the S and P ranks. Those final few achievements have been kicking my ass. Ghostrunner is great, don’t have much to say other than the movement was pretty good feeling. The instant respawn is very appreciated. Great soundtrack too. Celeste is wonderful, easily one of my favorite games. Wonderful game feel, art, soundtrack, story, all of the above. Whole lotta optional challenges too. Looking at you, golden berries. Katana Zero is a lot like Ghostrunner in a way, just 2D. Very good game. Killer soundtrack too.

Marble Skies also falls under this type of game and I highly recommend it if you are a fellow marble fan who likes going fast, insane tricks, and funky bounce physics.
Don't lie CT, you just wanted to make this video to freely advertise these games. I see you. 👀
Edit: stupid autocorrect
1. I loved the video, very informative, funny, and had really good pacing.... Almost like it was a satisfying run in a speedrun lmao
2. Warstrider Challenges is also another really neat micro speed running game that i feel is under appreciated!

Love the video the quality its really cool also I hold second place for speed running an obscure platformer but its still got a small community
No Roboquest?
Fr that game is criminally underrated
If you love this type of game, then you should check out
- Warstride Challenges
Doom eternal but even faster
- SEUM: Speedrunners from Hell
Pure platformer with tiny puzzle levels
- Hot Lava
Mirror's Edge but the floor is lava
i love doing the portal 2 least portals challenges i love all the satisfying tricks you do to save a single portal and try and hit 0 its absurdly fun
The passion you have for all of these games made me want to go and wishlist all of the games I didn't already have from this list
Conclusion : this man is an adrenaline junkie and is absolutely unhinged. 10/10
If you like first person speedrun shooters, I highly suggest checking out Anger Foot and Mullet Mad Jack. Both were released this year and are highly addicting.
Can we also just appreciate how good of a voice actor Circle is?
I tried Neon White for the first time...and the grind for red medals is a MUST!
This is by far my favourite genre of videogames, the dopamine hit is amazing.
Also, cybeehook is freaking amazing
1:27 I literally spat out my coffee like a cartoon when I saw rain world be mentioned
Agreed, grapples are the greatest single gaming innovation of all time
It's the essence of time trials, I can loose myself even in basic games like realistic car sims if they have time trial modes, the fun is in the battle with the physics systems when fighting for fractions of a second.
I used to play time trials in Mirrors Edge on the Xbox360 and pass the controller to my friends or brother and all these games seem like great ways to get that nostalgia
That 'Boom headshot'-reference really took me back to my early teens, hot damn.
Didn't think anyone would still remember that.
I feel like it's a crime that you didn't mention Anger Foot, just finished it and it was amazing, highly recommend it if you like this type of game.
I saw ultrakill in the compilation at the start, but speedrunning a level to the point of breaking it in that game is so satisfying and shockingly easy.
CircleToon long form videos are always a joy to watch.
Two more games I'll add to the list because I didn't see them mentioned here and they absolutely fit the genre.
Severed Steel and Diatomic
I'm very happy to see A Story About My Uncle mentioned for once, I feel like it's a very unknown game for how good it feels to play!
My favorite parts of ghost runner, Celeste, super meat boy; all these types of game is when late into the game you hit a hard level that you breeze through first try and realize you’ve mastered a skill you would not or possibly COULD not have done before
This video took MONTHS to make, this looks sooo gooood man, keep it up!
Imagine that feeling of flawless speed run execution but against another player in a pvp arena. Now add massive mechs. Now go play titanfall 2
Heheheheheh
my first micro-speedrunning game was a Duck Game arcade mode.
