Honestly some of what he says is already closer to our philosophy...only in a different way than anyone can imagine. But it is a good way of looking at it and considering the components of design and the why of it more closely.

Youre damn right
I wonder... which box does hollow knight NOT fill?
This has helped me to better understand and appreciate the Resident Evil games. I'm not a fan of having to be careful with my item management to beat the game, but if I just switch my perspective that the item management is apart of the game and not necessarily the combat itself, I'm more encouraged to try the earlier ones. It's like a challenge now to how good I can manage my items.
Agreed my only problem with it (I don’t know if this is true in all re games I’ve only played re 2&3 remakes a bit of re4 and re7) is the aiming sometimes mainly because I’m on console and getting headshots with a controller when you don’t have aim assist is harder then a genshin player when they see a child so conserving ammo and resources can be a pain in the a$$ to deal with

this man used to drag characters around on microsoft paint and now he can do this.
So proud
He did some serious animation in the past, check his early videos
he still drags stuff in ms paint its just how he does stuff he’s able to do both he just does ms paint more
It’s similar to making animations and making tiktoks. You can spend ages making an animation but making a tiktok wouldn’t take too long. Not saying that making the ms paint stuff wouldn’t take a while but I’m just comparing the two.
This is probably one of my favorite videos on the entire platform, such a funny, informative but not too bias it’s so well done
I'm not sure if there's such thing as a perfect combat system, but I think different kinds of combats work best for different games. Hollow Knight, for example, manages to have an incredibly simple yet deep combat, not in the sense of having to use lots of buttons, but that in its simplicity it has so much room to grow. Each scenario is different and requires different skills from the player, the combat yet so simple is so satisfying and gives the sensation of growth through learning
Imagine if what came out of that soup was Raid: Shadow Legends and this was an ad all along.

It's always so interesting to hear people's takes on combat systems, some just click better than others with people. Like I played god of war and it's combat felt annoying for me but elden ring feels exactly like what I want from a combat system. It really is different for each person.
Elden ring is a great combat system but it requires so much concentration sometimes it becomes overwhelming. Combat evolves from "oh that guy is about to attack, time to parry or dodge" to " JESUS CHRIST THROW YOUR ATTACK ALREADY- OH CHRIST I DODGED TOO LATE. WAIT WHAT DO I DO HERE WHY AM I NOT HURTING IT? WHY CANT I DODGE THAT? OH GOD MY STAMINA" I LOVE elden ring, its combat is challenging, and requires focus. But it's such a steep learning curve from the cave of knowledge to...Well literally anything. I didn't even know how to level up since I didn't sit in this one spot till about three hours in, so I finally got the ability to do that AFTER BEATING MARGITT. It does a terrible job at explaining, and you get the ability to summon by going back to a church that you'd have been to, resting there AFTER resting somewhere else. That is THE WORST WAY to introduce a mechanic EVER. People legit have gone an entire playthrough and missed the summoning bell. Games shouldn't hold your hand, but they shouldn't let you run out into traffic either.
@@xinderx The game guides you with the rays of grace, really it’s the player’s fault for not paying attention, it’s also really hard to run past the two sites of graces that unlock leveling.
@@ItchiestBum you can't deny it's easy to skip the summoning bell, and you can very easily not go to the storm hill gate grace, or rest there
@@xinderx actually there are 5 sites of grace where the cutscene can trigger and you get the summon bell after you enter liurnia trough the twin maiden husks
I'm the opposite i liked the combat in Dark Souls 1 but every other non Sekiro FromSoft game has been more boring than the previous one for me to the point that i literally fall asleep to the combat in Elden Ring its just too basic and samey to feel fun anymore after 6 near identical combat systems with 2 to 4 core changes max per game and not even significant changes at that ...
Sekiro on the other hand is a godsend

At 9:46 I had a pretty similar experience in clash of clans, I was trying to beat a really hard goblin level and I couldn’t figure it out, so I took a nap to recalibrate my system and I figured out in my sleep that the mortar is better at destroying groups and if I wanted to win I had to split my barbarians up, it felt really good that I figured it out myself and that’s what I love about other games with that mechanic.

I don't know that +18% toaster speed sounds mad op tbh.
Throw it into a bathtub of your enemies to cook a perfect hearty meal of monster guts and odd tasting tomato sauce.
It gets even better when you unlock the next skill of adding a second slot to your toaster.
It is a must in a dedicated build with toaster, but for anything else...

I love how you pointed out specifically the Borderlands skill tree. I've been playing it a lot recently and it has that thing that you were talking about with them, it's not too bogged down by random percentages and numbers. The trees actually mean something unique and different, and depending on which tree you upgrade your fighting style can vary from good cover and high health to all out attacks
It had stuff like "do 2-10% more headshot/melee damage" but also stuff like you said, where it unlocked certain abilities that drastically changed how your character fought or affected enemies differently. That is what made leveling up or finding a good kind of weapon fun.
Anarchy builds for Gaige/Mechromancer were hysterical. My bullets went everywhere but where I aimed them, but they also had auto-bounce and homing, so it usually turned into a barrage from every direction all closing in on the unfortunate soul about to be erased from existence from the +1050% damage bonus bullet swarm.
Man I loved that game back in the day.
Borderlands worked because you could respec and the skill tree was heavily affected by the gear you found. Yes, that one level up might not mean too much, but if you undo your last 5 skill points and put them into something else then it has a big impact on gameplay. It kinda shifts the decision making of leveling up to a point in the game where you have time to think and strategize instead of in the middle of combat.
I remember playing borderlands 1 a Few Years ago.
I first played the soldier And ingor the upgrade that bassically gives You unlimited ammo through ammo regeneration.
Than playing with another class was so weird with the different weapons, upgrades And actually having to spend money on supplies.
I love it when it’s animated especially the shading
In terraria something like a 2.5% bonus is considered op, when other games let you do double damage every other attack and stuff like that.
Yeah I think incremental boosts are just as much of a tool as huge gameplay warping upgrades. You gotta mix and match them juuuust right... OOOOR just be a metroidvania.
Oh, that's one reasonable, just no-bullsh game, interesting, thank you.

the witcher's 3 combat is pretty sick, it doesnt outright tell you what you should do, when going up against different creatures you have to figure out what each one of them does.
Cyberpunk 2077 has some of the best one vs the world combat systems ive ever played. Hits all five points, plus the seamless transition between dialogue to combat is so immersive. Talking to someone and they said something you didn't like don't even exit the convo just pull out your shotgun slow down time and shoot them back where they came from. Beautiful.
Omg, the Clarity really hits me hard with how I'm feeling hurt by games these days. I know that some kids would want to play the game as well, but a 5+ minutes tutorial for one mechanic wouldn't help me nor the child I believe.
This is the way i feel with the witcher.
Yeah generally tutorials are done awful. Hate it when you physically can't skip them.
@@joemency2242 Although The Witcher is clearly a game not made for kids.
I just like it when the combat is balanced between simple and complex.
Which is different for everyone
That's one thing I love about the 2D action games like Hollow Knight and Katana Zero, because even if the side-scroller format and core control schemes are super simple at a glance the different situations and challenges slowly escalate and evolve into a lot of unique and multi-layered encounters.

I really think the infamous and more specifically second son, has a really strong game mechanic, with the unlocking of new powers through your play through, the need to manage experience points and time to better yourself and your abiities, the choice to be good or evil, and in general some pretty nice graphics and a wonderful story line. Things make sense and the reasons for why and how things evolve durring the game are well explained. I recenty went back to paying the game after a year or two away, and after playing around again the controls are intuitive. There are some things that can get repetitive over time, but with the ammount of enemies coming at you in battle, you are constantly faced with the need to expand your arsonal and use the other abiities raather then just button smashing the attack button. The cooldown effect also adds a nice edge to the game in intense situations, its not intrusive yet provides an extremely clear message of hide, block, or run before its game over. Overal i realy enjoy this game and i woud highly reccomend infamous: second son to anyone :)
I enjoy your content so much
A game that, at least for me, has a "perfect" combat system is Hyper Light Drifter. It's just so damn satisfying to kill enemies in that game that I've finishied it like 10 times
GOD WHY DID I FORGET TO ADD THAT
I was very surprised you didn't mentioned, but I'm happy to know you've enjoyed it. That game is an absolute gem
@@CircleToonsHD Circle, I think God of War 2018 contradict or do not fulfilled the points you've made.
Agency, GOW confines you to a linear passage while also incorporating weapon specific enemies. Imbalances, the game gives you the same enemy types throughout a playthrough just with higher stats. Evolution, it's rather limited but grants the allusion of complexity through the branching skill tree and earning runic attacks. On a related note, I have to say that "button mashy" is a criticism of yourself because the choice of attacks are reliant own your creativity.
Clarity and Control, the FOV. For a series that relishes on the one man army trope, it's utterly confusing as to why the devs agree to limit it with a tightly frame camera. I get the idea of complementing narrative but the band aid solution of giving threat indicators already compromise that. And for a melee focused game, the screen gets messy if players attempt crazier moves against multiple enemies as it is filled with motions and particle effects. Also, we lose manual jumping because of this.
YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO FELLOW HLD FAN SPOTTED LET'S GOOOOOOO
I literally played it today, it's my 3rd of 4th playthrough, and NG+
I remember finishing my first NG+ run, and right after that discovering that the cape, bot and sword you wear actually has a bunch of diferent effects including the super useful +1 HP that would have spared me of i don't know how many deaths
Hollow Knight bosses can make you feel like they are LITERALLY IMPOSSIBLE TO BEAT, but when you do, it feels so so good, like it can make you literally feel like a BOSS
Grimm, NKG, and Radiance were so fun to fight and finally beat
@@shmarfle47 Yeah
Just like Dark Souls in general.
For me most hollow knight bosses are really fun and satisfying cuz of the learning curve. Take for example hornet at first you die almost instantly but after a few fights you start dodging and a few more you feel so good dodging hitting dodging hitting again. But some bosses are just cancer for example traitor lord made me want to quit until I finaly beat him. But I truthly love the combat in hollow knight. But some sections like white palace are straight up just pain.
I never thought 2D games would be fun and have lore, but when I played hollow knight it blew my mind.
This helps a lot man thanks, also great entertaining video
personally, simplistic controls are so much less overwhelming than having every button to use in combat. Jedi Survivor, Hollow Knight, and Assassin's Creed (at least the new ones) all feel so fun to fight in because anyone can do it. It's simplistic, you cant really make mistakes in what move you wanna pull off. It's just attack or block/dodge.
This has been the greatest thing I've seen in a long while.
I dont know man dealing more dmg to vegetarian scorpions is quite a buff, those things hurt like crazy and have alot of health
But is it better than 13% toaster buff? I think not!
'cause they eat healthy
They're so annoying, fairly quick and hard to see. They hit then run for safety. Their poison effect is strong as hell, and it stacks too. You better have potions ready. If you get hit by them more than three times, you're basically crippled. Four, and just call yourself dead, its literally a terminal illness.
@@hiway19891 18% actually. Toaster is much better imo
I don't know man all you need to do is switch to a weapon that has the "meat lover" enchantment when fighting vegetarian scorpions, so that skill is kinda a waste of skill point imo
Great video. I'm currently playing through Ghost of Tsushima and it has some of the best combat I can remember playing. Rapidly swinging your sword at enemies will get you no where, you have to be patient, read their movements, and wait for an opening. Know when you can parry and when you have to dodge. The combat evolves as you learn new stances and switch between them on the fly based on the weapon that the enemy has, which becomes chaotic when you are surrounded by multiple enemies. I even discovered that big brute enemies with huge shields, lots of heath, and combos unblockable attacks... you can one-hit them if you manage to fire an arrow past their shield and hit them square between the eyes. The game never tells you that you can do that. It's brilliant.
Playing Ghost of Tsushima rn and i fully agree
you'll love sekiro then
10:46 Often overlooked aspect. "Weight". Hitting something should feel like you are hitting something with effort and inertia and committed movement , not a quiet suggestion of maybe possibly brushing lightly against something with a feather duster (Skyrim).
This cooking show is so damn wild.
7:37 And THIS is why I love Terraria soo much. When you get hermes boots, grappling hook, wings, ect. You just wonder how you played without them.
Same with aragami 2, the ability to see where the enemies have gone and where they are going to go is acquired a bit later in the game and I always just forget how handy it is, no joke most of the missions would be impossible without it.
The biggest problem for me is the game is so f’ing hard to replay honestly like the first 3 bosses I fight in a play through are so hard because I forgot the control sceme

One of the best combat I found in a videogame was in Prince of Persia: Warrior Within.
Something that I like in a combat system is an intuitive control scheme that still has enough depth for you to learn the ins and outs, variety of enemy types with their own weaknesses and freedom for player expression.
This game uses not only its items/weapons and abilities to aide you in combat, but the environments as well: you can trigger traps against enemies, use parkour to hit them where they can't hit you or, if you are on a balcony, just grab them and throw them off the railing.
Circle should make his own game at this point. That'd be amazing.
He should be the director at least
Maybe he should work with a dev team as a creative director/consultant. He seems to know his shit conceptually, but i'd guess he doesn't know a lot of Programming and integrating these Systems into an actual game (could be wrong about that tho).
It would be really cool to see a Videogame with his vision someboday!
It's infinitely easier to talk about what makes good game combat, than to actually implement it into a real game. You can make a list of goals, discuss the theory and all, but to actually design and build a game which takes on all of these attributes is a completely different set of skills and knowledge, which almost nobody watching this video will have.
I like gamedev and those advices are actually really good it's rly good

7:54 yes, shovel knight.
-upgrades that make you wonder how you played without them (Phase Locket, Troupple Chalice)
-legitamite choice (Choosing whether to buy the throwing anchor and dust knuckles or that one red armor with your new 4500 gold)
-fun and innovative attacks on both sides of the spectrum (Shovel knight's downwards poke thing and King knight's confetti things)
-lets you figure things out for yourself when fighting bosses (like how you can knock back black knights flare wand)
-multiplayer battle mode that is technically a different game entirely
-three bonus stories that follow the same trope that the boss is way weaker as a playable character
-a pack called treasure trove that lets you play the main game *and* the last two examples
Bonus: Actually makes enemies evolving with you fun (the slimes at the plains turning into fire slimes at the mole knight level so you have to fight them and not bounce poke on all of them is the only example i could think of)
and also btd6 but idk if it counts because its a tower defence
Hollow Knight has such amazing combat- so simple but so good. It’s tactile and varied, giving you choices but never becoming overwhelming
ya this wun ses it rite

Why don’t more games use badge systems for upgrades? Or the ability to respec like dark souls? This allows players to play their way. It’s just better.
i love hollow knight so much. That game is a masterpiece.
I always hated whenever the game would make the same enemy scale in level with the player like "Well since I'm a higher level and deal more damage (and you deal more to me) that makes me an amazing enemy!"
I remember googling how to kill a certain boss once as a kid. Turns out he was super weak to bombs 5 to be exact. I died 15 times to him and gave up the game. 3 Years later I owned his hide with 3 bombs and 2 bullets in the head for good luck.
Just remembered it's Borderlands 2 The Skag Mother Boss.
Ok
Oh yeah I remember that boss, luckily I was krieg so I just melee'd that bitch
Man, I about busted a gut laughing, and don't know how I missed this one last year up to now.
Pretty great opinions expressed quite eloquently.
Don't think I agree about the need for extremely complex button layouts that change over time, but I do get why they're appealing.
I think for me, a game with perfect combat is Breath of the Wild. It lacks a magic system, but the risk/reward vs. item durability along with the bullet time flurries and parry timings and stuff... it's great! Approachable for beginners, optional to get good at since it's not really required for anything, but feels good to get good at, because the reward is less consumption of resources along with a sense of mastery.
God of War for me fell short in a few places. Namely, healing in GoW 2018 is super clunky, and basically incentivizes you to get good enough that you barely/don't need it. In combat games that allow healing, the healing should be snappy and worthwhile always with a risk/reward trade off. In GoW, you have to crunch a green jolly rancher on the ground by standing right over it, and chances are, if you need it, then you aren't gonna be dodging/blocking/parrying whatever was giving you problems in the first place. Then if you do get it, it's more like a healing suggestion. You barely get HP back. Might as well not exist! Love that game though. Beating all of the Valkyries and their Queen was mega atmospheric and fun!
One genre that gets to explore all of this but I think is frequently overlooked is metroidvania type platformers.
Hollow Knight and Ori 2 are great examples of games that basically check all these boxes, at least for me.
Why not portal 2 as well?
Yeah, Hollow Knight is one of my favorite games, and I've just recently completed it again. It's a game you can come back to over and over.
Ori 2 had really great combat. That was the largest improvement from the first game. The best part about the combat is how you maneuver yourself to attack and dodge attacks using bash. Truly one of the best abilities in gaming.

The part about not letting the player getting too comfy reminded me about Metal Gear Rising so much because the start of the game you dont really mind mechanics like parrying but then when you reach Monsoon and Jetstream Sam you realize how important parrying is and the game tells you to go for it whenever you can and to me thats good game design and gives the player more and more freedom on how they play
I didn't even figure out how to parry before monsoon, but I learned how to parry and that white people with Sam. I think the pinnacle of metal gear rising revengeance is the fight Jetstream Sam, but I love the grandio scale of senator Armstrong is the final boss.
Also another thing that they weaponize comfortability in that game is that up until the sundowner fight despite sundowner being really easy unlike all bosses previously he is slow tanky and does a lot of damage where all the bosses before him are fast agile and the differences between the combat of sundowner and all the bosses before it causing you to have to adapt to a whole new type of bossfight
Bladewolf exist to bully you into learning how to parry, Monsoon is there in case you need an extra beating to learn it
If I had to choose a favorite. I would say, Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria has the combat I like the most.
Battles are a tactical field, with some even acting as a mini dungeon. You can get more diverse, by splitting your party, but you have to be careful. As they have to be close enough to chain into their specials.
The collisions are smooth, and offers quite a range of combinations. Then when getting into their specials, this is when it truly gets amazing. The visuals, the camera angles, the collisions, dialogues, etc. Everything playing on its high point, with the soundtracks really bringing this up to its peak.
It truly makes you feel excited. And as the game goes along, knowing when to use this becomes important. As bosses will use their own as well. A bunch of setup is necessary. And even then, you have to be careful. Due to how stat gains doesn’t affect anything much until late game, where you need to grind for it.
And even then, doesn’t do that much.
A close second would be the first Valkyrie Profile game. These games really allow you to experience the action in a way I feel many miss nowadays. They also had a great sense of progression.
Nibelung Valesti.
Take the first game for instance, you start with the first version. The second version comes close to the mid game. With the final version representing Lenneth’s ascension.
In the second game, a bit more thought was put into it. The first version is Alicia’s version, the second comes close to the end. Where it develops into the traditional form, felt it shoulda been the other way around really. The last version is when she becomes Valkyrie. This is in the finale as well.
This more or less representing the freedom of souls, or something like that. Anyway, in each instance, they take the action to the peak.
And even in smaller instances, they know how to make the player excited. As well as…kinda afraid of the beating they might take. The best of both worlds. 😂
Another good example would be Grandia II. Where the action is engaging, interacting with the tactical system. Millennia’s attacks each brings about a rise in emotions, and the cutscenes done are just amazing. It makes you want to engage with it. Each character gets their own as their last skill.
Except Ryudo, who gets a more faster one. However, is the most powerful one for the second half of the game. All of these had a meaning behind it as well.
And I think this is where the issue rests. A meaning behind it. If action is meaningless, it becomes forgettable, and or disliked. If the action is meaningful, it will be praised, and fondly remembered.
I think this is objectively one of the best videos about video games where made.

"Perfect Videogame Combat" is when every neuron in your brain is lit up and you're pouring every ounce of your adrenaline, reflexes and combat mastery into a fight.
Examples of this in my opinion are Orphan of Kos [Bloodborne], Vergil [Devil May Cry 5], Moon Lord [Terraria], Isshin, the Sword Saint [Sekiro] and basically any late-game shootout in Doom Eternal.
I don’t think I’ve ever felt a high like the one after beating orphan of kos for the first time from any other video game. Isshin came close
Or the mantis lords in hollow knight

One thing I want to see in games is enemys working together, such as having a sheild boy with the weakness of being shoved ,but when you do shove him a different type of enemy will counter you by shoving you. It would be great for a game to have 10 different types of enemys that work well together and can make different difficult to defeat teams.
Devs of Witcher 3 say that enemies attack differently when they are in a group.
Souls games. Demon souls variety pack of soldiers will end you so quick.
@@sinisterthoughts2896 I don't think that's what there talking about, in soul like games generally a mob of weak monsters do the same thin g they would do alone but there more of them so you can very easily get stunlocked
Competitive Pokemon is like this in a way.
I feel like i saw this in some game, but i can't really remember. The closest i can think of, is sadly a turn based example. Chrono Trigger has enemies do different attacks when grouped up with certain types and they also have different reactions depending on field placement and attacks used.
When Circle actually animates: A BLESSING FROM THE LORD
Sick rumble qiyana combo my dude!
That ad placement made me chuckle out loud for real 👍
He finally makes an actual animation. AND ITS SO SMOOTH
Hes made animation before just short ones
That "1 vs the world factor" hit different.
Doom does this perfectly imo
Circle’s five laws of video game combat
that was great concise and clear :D
Most games: Our combat system is extremely intricate, about 69% of our efforts went into designing it!

Metal gear rising has a pretty cool combat system, even though... you do... kind of sort of mash the counter button over and over again, the ai will use an unblockable attack that won't make it that you can just do the same thing over and over again so there's that
8:54 That’s why I love my choice read because when it has a boss it shows you a slight thing some people may see so you would still have to figure out how to defeat it the best way
