The best part of his playing on this song was cut short at the end. At any rate, Mark is one of the greatest guitarists and lyricists in any genre. His solo stuff is very good, and he is still going strong.

Middle guy is correct. The British Invasion, as it's called in music, started in the 1960s with Pop Rock from The Beatles, The Kinks, and others. It completely changed the sound of rock music. The vibe became very teen suburban, rather than the other side of the track rockabilly, of Elvis, Carl Perkins, Eddie Cochran, and the like. Then in the 70s the Brits re-invented rock again, with a sound driven by a love of American electric guitar blues.

Every Dire Straits song is a duet between Mark Knopfler and his guitar at it's heart. His solo work is probably even better since that band has been together since 1996. Dire Straits only had two permanent members Mark Knopfler and John Illsley, the bass player.

It was all these UK guys who grew up in the 50's and 60's who got into old American Blues albums and were influenced by it so much they incorporated it into the songs they wrote. Then they ended up bringing it back to the US and revived all the old bluesmen and women. I know Elvis played a big part in it in America but it was people like Clapton and the Stones that really struck a chord in American listeners ears. Out of them Mark Knopfler here was the best fingerpicker to come out of it all.

It's the same song, but the vibes are different. You guys should check out the Alchemy Live version and compare the differences. This was Dire Straits' biggest hit off their first self titled album in 1976. That entire album is, as I've heard you call it, 'Fire'! There is one cut off that album that doesn't seem to get much play or love, and IMHO, is deserving of being called amazing. It's my personal favorite as it reminds me every time of a road trip I took with my best friend in 1978 (RIP). That song being 'Wild West End'. The fascinating bit of it is Mark Knopfler's mastery of finger-style guitar on his Fender Stratocaster (electric, which is unusual, but gives incredible nuance to his dynamics)... All done without a solo in this song, but has unique riff after unique riff that backs the song perfectly while grabbing one by the ear. The lyrics speak to anyone who's had a chance tohang with their best friend with in their own hometown or 'hood'. Enjoy! 😄 ua-cam.com/video/T4Ad_J_2l0w/v-deo.html

You can “just listen to” anything on that album!

AH! You didn't get the long version. That second solo he goes into is epic.

Deptford, South London. back then a pretty grim place. In those days pubs would have live music, a wide spectrum of style and level of competence.

The official video famously and tragically cuts short a phenomenal guitar solo from the original performance, that's also on the record. You can get clips of this whole show, if you want to see full version.

Mark (Guitar and Vocals) played on a couple of Bob Dylan albums and was the only other performer on Dylan's legendary 'Blind Willie McTell'.

This came out I believe in 78 or 79 and I didn't realize the lead singer was the main guitar player but it went off when it was about to be even better

Great reaction. I wish people didn’t react to this video, because you’re missing a whole verse, and the best solo. An important verse, and solo, in my opinion.
