- "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" is a song by the British band Tears for Fears. It was released as a single in 1985 and appeared on their album "Songs from the Big Chair." The song was written by Roland Orzabal, Ian Stanley, and Chris Hughes. It became one of Tears for Fears' most popular and recognizable songs, achieving commercial success and critical acclaim.
The song features a distinctive melody, catchy chorus, and thought-provoking lyrics that touch on themes of power, ambition, and the desire for control. The lyrics suggest a sense of disillusionment with the world's state and the human pursuit of dominance and authority. Despite its contemplative themes, the song is known for its upbeat and melodic sound.
"Everybody Wants to Rule the World" reached high chart positions in multiple countries, including the United States and the United Kingdom. It remains a beloved classic from the 1980s and has been featured in various movies, TV shows, and commercials over the years. Its lasting popularity is a testament to its timeless appeal and the band's ability to create memorable music. - Розваги
"Welcome to your life, there's no turning back". One of the most poignant 1st line's ever.
Sad that the rest of the song is just sad... the music and production are on point... but lyrically this is garbage.
@@roboclesto each their own I guess
@@robocles Lyrically bad? Umm no. That’s a horrible take. I disagree.
@@robocles yikes, the lyrics are amazing actually. not sure what you're listening to
@@robocles Hmmm...agree to disagree.
_"Help me make the most of freedom and pleasure, nothing ever last forever."_
Us 80's kids can't help but feel nostalgic whenever we hear them. Feels like they were featured in every one of the good movies back then.
Still garbage lyrics.
*Michael Jackson loved this song so much he used it's bassline two years later in 'The Way You Make Me Feel'.*
Just saw them for my fourth time on July 7th and they still sound just as good. Was lucky enough to see them in 1996 , 2010 , 2022.
This song has become ICONIC!!
This is my number one favorite song in the entire world, and my family and friends know it, especially my son Patrick (26). It was also my son Gary’s favorite song. Gary committed suicide last year. For the longest time I could not listen to it, until my son Patrick found a cover with a little humor. He thought it would help me, and it did! I can now embrace this song, as well as my number two song Africa. I love you guys so much because you are real and not afraid to be yourselves!!! HUGS! 💗💜💗💜
My heart goes out to you. You are strong. And you still also have a wonderful son in Patrick as well.
this is my number one favorite song as well that and i ran
Lots of love from Darlington uk x
@@christineremmer5514 Thank you from Sacramento California HUGS! 💗💜💗💜
Sorry for your loss
So so good! This band was so original, their music really stood out!!!!!!!! You are right, they really don't miss!!
The singer, Curt Smith, was on my flight from Burbank 3 days ago. 😮😊
One of the BEST "driving songs" ever. 🚗💨
It’s on my driving playlist with Phil Collins “Take Me Home” - 2 of my favorites.
Hopefulness and melancholy all rolled up into some of the most irresistible, perfect minutes of pop music of the 80’s.
"Everybody Wants to Rule the World" was a massive hit the year I graduated from high school. The class valedictorian wrote the speech he gave at our graduation around the song. Watching the video, an Interstate 10 sign flashes briefly. Given the desert terrain shown in the video, it looks to be some place near San Bernardino, California. The Exxon sign that flashes briefly shows the price of a gallon of gasoline was $1.45 at the time, probably a bit on the high side given the semi-remote location. Check out "Mad World" and "Pale Shelter" from 1983 when you can. They are on tour in the US right now. A friend saw them play in Los Angeles last week. They released a new album last year. Check out the lead single, "Break The Man", when you can.
I go past this area every once in a while. The gas station is still there but is Shell and behind it is the Morongo Casino/ Cabazon Mall on the other side. One of the two dinosaurs are still there and has become the parking area for the Casino. The mountain background is still the same as the video very scenic area.
Interesting. I doubt that casino was there back when. Tribal casinos took off in California in the nineties.
@@mikecaetano No you are right. The casino back at that time wasn't there. The casino sits where the dinosaurs were shown on the video. Well at least one of them does now. The parking lot was built around it. The old exxon station is mainly original to today on the inside but is now a Shell station. The mountain view of the last part of the video is on the opposite side of the casino.
Great shuffle! Against a 6/8 beat! Love their baritone voices. And those layers!!!!!
Great choice!
MJ loved this beat so much he stole it for one of his biggest hits

Check out their song, "Woman in Chains" featuring Oleta Adams; so beautiful!
I had this playing over and over driving home after graduating college in ‘86. It brings me back and yes, very appropriate first lines for me.
Love Tears for Fears ❤ All of their songs are 🔥
Just listened to a recent (2022) live version of this a bit ago and dude sounds almost identical to what he did then.
I always loved the fact that the band had two lead vocalists and they each had opportunities to sing lead on songs or just harmonize with one another. It really made them unique.
Sitting in the North East of England, raining pelting down, this son took me back to my 20 year old self. Mad World absolutely changed the way I dressed, did my hair. I met my future husband when this song came out, 35 years still married and still dance around the kitchen to this.
At the time I didn’t even know what this was all about. GENxer Just learning what it really means in 2024. Still relevant, more than ever 🌎 🌍
I still have this Vinyl from the 80’s ❤🎵🎤
This is another "time and place" song. 12 years old, summer baseball, the pool, fireworks.
It's a pleasure joining with folks who makes good music. And they share their gift of making sounds for you to be aware of the communications IN THIS PLACE...IN THIS TIME...
Sewing the Seeds of Love should be your next reaction.
I was stationed in Iraq, again. It was my birthday and in a "rec" center therecwas karaoke. I sang this song because the new batch of people that came in to rule the mission and I were on the outs. They ended kicking me out of the country...lol anyway, this song was perfect!
Yeah, layers.. dimensions. There are songs that can slightly pull you out of your body and put you on a little journey elsewhere. Or inwards, deeper inside. Power of music.
The quintessential 80's song!
One of my fav bands and songs from them ❤
Good comment, Fenom. Maybe you lads should start a side channel teaching us suburban white boys from Australia about all the classic hip hop! I’d be down for learning all about that. Meanwhile, I love this channel! I grew up with the songs and know them well, but it’s fun re-discovering them with y’all, and seeing your joy. Music is the best way to bond with your fellow man.
One of the biggest joys growing up was putting an album on the turntable, sitting down in a comfy bean bag chair, putting on those big headphones and closing my eyes. So many albums were designed to listen to songs in order. Play one side, get up, flip the album over and do it again. Music was to be savored. It wasn't the background music for multi-tasking. I'm glad you guys are enjoying the journey.
Love you guys.
You should do Working Hour by Tears for Fears with the dopest sax solo in a song!
Underrated band
Saw them for a 3rd time live in Kansas City. They still sound great lives with both classics, covers, and new material.
They are still touring this year and rakeing in the bucks . There other hits are SHOUT and SEWING THE SEEDS OF LOVE .
For some reason there is no "Thumbs Up" reaction button. Anyway, for sure one of my favorite songs ever. Touches my heart
Guys you need to seriously check out their first 2 big songs. "Pale Shelter" and "Change" were songs that you will love
A classic !
tale goes M. Jackson used instrumental bed of song for ONE of his big hits; "way u make me feel"
We had some great bands and singers for such a small island.
May I recommend you listen to some Level 42, a very underrated band , had a few hits in the 80s too.
I always really enjoyed Level 42 and I could never quite put my finger on why. I think it was because even in the 80s, they sounded more 80s than anyone else.
I'm primarily an old school metalhead but I've always liked this song. I think it's one of the best Pop songs ever recorded! Glad you guys enjoyed it!
You should listen to their new album called Tipping Point. The best part is they kept their signature 80s sound. It’s a really good album. You all should check it out. I saw them live last year for the second time, and they were stellar. my favorite song from them is Woman In Chains🥰
Tipping point is fantastic. .. Live, the songs are even better.
Roland and Curt rocked it and they're still out there doing thing! Hey CoreyRoy_, OlliWoodda and Fenon202, you guys gotta explore the catalog of Full Force and The Party next!
Dope reaction as usual. You guys remind me of listening to music with my homies
Relevant is right! More relevant than ever. Don't get me started...
Great song, great group, reminds me of the topic of the live last night. My uncle had cable a few years before we did, with the corded remote like the person mentioned last night. They lived north of Detroit, we lived south of Detroit. Our cable was installed on my last day of high school in "82". We were rotten little 💩s, we would go through the neighborhood and sneak up to people's front windows and point a remote at their cable boxes through the window and change the channels or shut the TV off and laugh and laugh at the people trying to figure out what was going on 😂😂😂
This is just one of those somgs that gets you wrapped up in it every time you hear it, still, almost 40 years later. Seem them live in concert was back in 1983. Happy days!
This song and video is the essence of the '80s, to the bone.
You've only done three and they're all amazing! Get ready for even more amazing songs! Have so many good ones. Woman in Chains, sowing the seeds of love and many more. Love you guys❤
Gotta check out my favorite Tears for Fears track called The Hurting , and you can't go wrong with Woman in Chains .
It was the 80's and they were comng to my town !...as I eagerly got ready to go..for I was set on getting me one of those fellas lol..wouldn't you know out of town relatives showed up with their new baby..😧...ahhh..so is life...I still love their music 👍💚😉...🌿🌿🌿

Sowing the Seeds of Love next please. I think you guys would like Howard Jones as well.
"Sewing the seeds of love" ❤
"...There's a room where the light won't find you..."
When you do "Sewing The Seeds of Love" it's important to note its a nod to the Beatles. My favorite is "Woman In Chains" its POWERFUL & they convey every emotion.
I was coming to recommend these two songs....awesome!
I love seeing baby boy get into the songs. I can see the difference between hearing and listening to these songs.
I'm 52 and every time I hear this song I'm immediately a teenager back in the 80s
There’s so many layers to this song. One of the best 80’s bands.
Song of the 80’s
WHAT ABOUT : - Sowing the seeds of love , Adwice for the young at heart , Head over heels , Womans in chaince , Break it down again , Bad man's song , Elemental , Secrets ?
I saw them in concert and it was freaking AWESOME! 🎉🎉🎉
Fun Fact: The beat you hear in the beginning of this song caused the birth of Michael Jackson's "The Way You Make Me Feel"
Michael loved this song so much that he sampled the beat of this song
I have their first c.d. Yes, that's how long I've been listening to them😁. Good one guys!✌️
Those Honda three-wheel ATVs in the video, are now illegal in all federal and mo state parks. They are also illegal to sell in many areas. That's how old this video is. That is how time has changed so much. Yet this song still rocks. And I still have a Honda 110 three-wheeled in my barn. I think I'll take it out for a Wheelie now.
The two black guys were so random, but so right on! So did they say, Hey guys! Let’s get two awesome black men with dancing vibes, and have them get groovy in front of two old gas pumps!!!! So random, and so genius! ☮️☮️💜💜
You just want to move listening to this song. Great momentum.
'One headline,why believe it?'
They are still rocking…new album called “ Tipping Point”.
I just subscribed, you guy’s play such great music. I was a teenager in the 60’s, so I love the 70’s & 80’s music also…Thank you for all the great music, so far!👍👏👏👏💙💙💙
I’m very impressed with Fenom’s music instincts. I agree. My favorite band of the 80s. Two singers, great musicians, deep lyrics, unique bridges, falsettos, harmonizing, complicated arrangements, timeless songs, unpredictable videos. Well done on this reaction fellas.
Love this song 🎵
LOVE IT! I’m “up there” in decades and always loved this song. Used it in picture video for my daughter when she graduated from high school a few years ago years ago. Fit so well.
That he is driving, the Austin Healey 3000, is my favorite car of all time.
EVERY SINGLE SONG FROM EVERY SINGLE ALBUM is amazing. Especially Roland's solo Tears For Fears Albums: *ELEMENTAL* and *RAOUL AND THE KINGS OF SPAIN*
Yeah this is definitely in the top 100 all time pop/rock songs for sure. It's got to be top 10 for the 1980s itself
I like you guys take on the music. You make me really listen to music that I was familiar with, but I've never really heard it until now. Thanks for that!
All those killer outlawed three wheelers! Still ain't stopped people getting killed on four wheelers.
You guys should get past the singles. Do Broken/Head over heels/Broken live from the album.
It's a bada*s ride.
Good one here guys.
Perfect
Sowing the seed of love should be next song
Corey, you dive on the live MTV and I did soon after. Be present bro that's why I watch this.
You guys are the Kings of layers✌️
Pale Shelter...they do angst/ernest fabulously
Try woman in Chains by them if you want some deep azz lyrics and meaning... my favorite band from the 80's for sure.
Was working as a DJ in Switzerland at this time. Loved listening to this song
First time poster, long time watcher. Love you guys, and am somewhat surprised (happily) by your reaction to Tears for Fears. They are up there. Please continue. :)
life is ,go in ,and never let your mind dictate what happens next. just go in it will all unfold as it happens and you ! get to participate and then go home and be with love thats how we the unfased ,do our day and then you know what ? you do it again rinse repeat reward yourself and move foward
I know this song from 80-90s but thanks to GTA to bring this classic to all the young people
Who’s GTA?
@@letitbesummer6536 GTA (Grand Theft Auto) is an old computer videogame who used to have radio dials ingame, and that dial was full of 80's music!
There's a room where the light won't find you, holding hands while the walls come tumbling down...this was about fallout shelters and cold War fears...
Please review, Woman In Chains (with the gorgeous guest voice of Oleta Adams), Sowing The Seeds Of Love, Advice For The Young At Heart, and The Tipping Point. I agree, Everybody Wants To Rule The Rule is in the top 100 of all time, but I think Woman In Chains and Sowing The Seeds Of Love should be in there too.
A shuffle beat. Played in 4/4 time, but the high hat cymbal get an extra or two taps between beats same with the snare drum. Giving that shuffle sound. Alot of times shuffle gets mixed with swing which is in 3/4 time. Hars to explain without my kit in front of me. Thats generally it though. Extra pops on the highhats in between the beat.
Tears for Fears - Mad World
There are diffrent messages in the video if you can catch them.
This song is so true for today.

It would be nice to see y'all react to 'Sowing the Seeds of Love'. 😊
Thank you so much for playing this song. I love this group and this song!✌️
Me too, love it!
Certain songs growing up , in any decade bring back certain memories. This song ,Summer of 1985, with my new cassette player with headphones must have e mowed 100 lawns..lol and at 15 years old never felt so free, and was going to rule the World..😂
Enjoyed your review! I think you guys put the volume up a notch, which I appreciate. I like my music loud. 🎶 ❤Tears For Fears. Was lucky enough to see them in the 90’s.
