To be fair ice is water molecules slowed down so they frezze and hot water is just excited water molecules so if you can do one you should be able to do the other
In terms of the U-Turn vs Volt Switch debate, as if U-Turn needs any more positives in its corner, it has significantly better distribution than Volt Switch. Pretty much every special attacking electric type does get Volt Switch, but there's a very select few non-electric types that get access to it, wheras U-Turn is much more widely available on a much wider variety of pokemon. If U-turn was limited to bug types the way Volt Switch is limited to electric types, nobody would care that it exists.
I'm so glad in Gen IX, when Scald returned as a TM, they actually changed who can use it to be exclusively to the Pokémon that feel more appropiate (like Sinistcha) and/or already known for having the ability to use Fire-Type Moves (like Gyarados and Slowbros of the worlds). It's definitely still a strong option, but not longer feels omnipresent like Gen 5-7 where it was given to literally EVERYBODY (except the ones that are Part Ice-Type).
I think Palkia is still weirdly excluded though. Palkia can readily learn fire moves, is a water type that learns water moves, but as far as I know, has never been able to learn Scald.
I'll be honest, I have a soft spot for Soak due to how I used it in Omega Ruby. You see, my main status user for the run was Roserade, which is a really bad matchup for Primal Groudon. However, by leading with a Pelipper that knew Soak, this took away both of PG's stab, allowing Roserade to survive long enough to hit with Sleep Powder and strike back with now-super-effective Giga Drains. Now, you might think that Desolate Land would've countered this plan, but it turns out that DL only blocks _damaging_ Water-type moves. As such, PG became that which it hates. Still doesn't make the move all that useful, though.
I remember one time I was in a double battle facing a typeless Arcanine (They had used Burn Up) who got Wonder Guard via Entertainment Shedinja (They got it via Mimic) inflicted with Toxic, and I had two Heal Pulse users on the field. So basically I was using Heal Pulse to prevent the Arcanine from using Rest and getting rid of Toxic. I'm only sharing this bizarre scenario to boost the video in the algorithm (And because it is more interesting than my history with Gear Shift), I don't vouch for the usage of Heal Pulse. Also, I don't know if it's better to wait for the premiere to be over to comment, or to comment as soon as possible.
1:28:36 fun fact you got that one backwards, wide guard had an increase chance of missing in gen V, but the next gen that was removed, funnily enough that move increases your protect counter so using wide guard and then protect will make protect miss even after gen V
I absolutely adore the sweep baby inc bit for scald, it is both super entertaining with how close it is to the sweet baby inc press conference thing, and Its communicates the idea of scald being dumb to be put on every water type super well. and I agree we need more D.I.E in our pokemon games!
I’ve seen guard split used on absolutely heinous Chansey timer stall teams in VGC with shuckle. Thats the only time I’ve ever seen this used. The worst part about this is that some of these teams actually had good success at the regional level.
Hey. Gyarados can learn Flamethrower. Probably only because hes a dragon but yknow. And he'd never want it anyway. I also always love your videos. The way you react and explain things is a great time.
It's crazy seeing you evolve over the years Cheesy, comparing the quality of your old videos with the new ones is like comparing a Chikorita with a Mega Charizard.
oh come on Acid Spray is pretty good in GO, it charges pretty fast and guaranteed reduces enemy defense. It doesn't deal that much damage but maybe the opponent is scared and spend one of their only two uses of Protect per battle because they thought you'd hit them with a stronger move that takes longer to charge! I will now GO away from this comment section I don't know who suggested move viability in GO but they're insane. I mean, GO is a game where Meganium is a relevant meta threat. Let that sink in.
The Scald vs post buff Knock Off debate Pokeaim has every few months in his lives with his co host always has me in stitches. Really insane to see how overcompensated both these moves are.
Red and blue Basculin can learn Final Gambit, but it was removed from white Basculin's movepool specifically, because Game Freak likely didn't want TWO high HP ghost types using it and being a nuisance together. Edit: Seeing such adorable Ribombee art on an Imported Cheese video was a really nice surprise, thanks for that :)
Milotic, a water type, has excellent synergy with being burned, a fire type status, in which it's defence is doubled when it's burned therefore Scald is based and milotic-pilled

I was born in 2005. Back when I was just a tiny baby, my older sibling had fun, wholesome gameplay to enjoy. It was a time where Suicune didn't have an honorary fire-typing, and where water-types with 108 speed and 129 special attack willingly ran their 110 base power stabs over 80 bp ones. But, when I had just become old enough for my memory to develop... when my family was at our highest point, ruling the seven seas... it happened. My parents and sibling, they tried to protect me, but it wasn't enough. I discovered Giratina's gift for us humans. Pokemon Black and White for the Nintendo DS. From that point on, I knew. The seas were not a place of riches and shanties, they were a place of war. A place where even the best of sailors were not safe. My sibling was hit first. They were left so disfigured by their burn wounds that they had no choice but to abandon us and forge a new life. Then, just as quickly, I fell victim to the great scourge of the seven seas. The Jellicents, they attacked in droves, searing my flesh, incinerating my home island, and giving me a real reason to wear my customary pirate eye patch. Suicune came not long after. It ran across the waves like a flash of light, leaving a trail of searing-hot steam in its wake. I watched as it effortlessly ripped through the ships of my allies, setting them ablaze in a mere three turns. When I sought refuge in the peaceful Alola region, I found that even that place wasn't safe from the scourge of the seas. Toxapex at every corner, haunting every beach, incinerating all who were foolish enough to tread carelessly. The longer I lived, the more I realized that no one, nowhere, would ever be safe again. I had been born into a world of monsters and madness and Arceus himself had issued me a test. That test being to survive in this horrible, ruined landscape. Now, the scars from my burns act as a reminder to never underestimate the power of the seas. Not far below the calm oceans of water lies an endless ocean of fire. I tell my tale to all who will listen to warn them. Please, be careful around water-types, for the scourge they have brought sparks more fear than Davy Jones himself. It is a name that lives in infamy, and for good reason... a name that will never, and should never, be forgotten, out of respect for those tarnished by its reign... Scald.
GameFreak having movesets get wiped for old pokemon transferred into the Gen 9 games initially wasn't a very popular change (especially when it screwed over pokemon like Weavile for a while because GF took away their good moves until adding them back in as TMs in the DLC), but it was one of the few new good things they did in modern Pokemon, as they could finally correct certain annoying moves having nonsensically wide distribution like Scald, Toxic, and Double Team (as well as end certain old obscure event moves being meta that you realistically wouldn't be able to get on cartridge without hacking). I will always be baffled on why GameFreak once thought that every pokemon should be able to spit up a deadly poison, Poison type or not.
1:30:58 In Portuguese, Quiver Dance got two translations, both effectively mean "Flutter Dance" but one can also literally be interpreted as literally "Shivering Dance" or "Scary/Fear/Trembling Dance" since the word they use has a more specific meaning of describing someone who is shaking involuntary, like via fear. I don't know if this is just a translation oddity or if it was a cleverly disguised joke, since the way this the phrasing works in battle gives the impression the game is telling you to shake in fear as the enemy moth starts soft omniboosting, might also be a jab at how a lot of people think moths or butterflies are scary in real life.
Getting to Foul Play is reminding me of how from a standard shiny hunt I caught a 0 Attack IV Flutter Mane and proceeded to not play any VGC and now I almost feel regret, except it means that I avoided playing Gen 9 VGC
Night Daze is also hilarious in that it makes the Illusion Zoroark worthless since it is the only Pokemon capable of using it. Now you know what it is immediately.
For scald burning more than fire itself makes a lot of sense. I've passed my hand through fire many times and with lighters held the flame up to my hand yea its hot but a kettle of hot water just finished boiling fell over on my foot the contact with the water wasn't more than a second and I got a nasty burn that burned for the whole night then took well over a week to heal
Can't wait for heal pulse to appear, thank's to Clawitzer's mecha launcher ability boosting heal pulse to a whopping 75% healing, for sure it will become meta defining in doubles!
*Enemy Phase Music* So, I'm gonna say I have some disagreements with your reading on scald and water in general. Whilst I did appreciate your powerpoint, I feel like you left out a crucial element of water: adaptability. Water is fluid and ever changing, it's a substance that in everyday life we can encounter in solid, liquid and gaseous forms. It's a central idea of the element, ice is a natural part of water, but so is steam. volcanic activity and fires may be rarer than snow in nature but they do happen, especially deep in the sea, whole ecosystems evolve around this meeting of fire and water. Because I'd argue they're not opposed forces, but parallel ones. Yes water can be used for healing in fantasy, but fire can be too. Even the phoenix, one of the most iconically fire associated mythical creatures is a being that is constantly reborn, in games like Final Fantasy it's one of the few summons that can heal. In classical mythology, fire brings energy and animating force, it is the very essence of life. Whilst water sustains, fire gives that initial spark. You even mentioned Avatar, and the show directly says that the true meaning of fire is life, not destruction, even further in one of the earliest episodes we see Katara and Aang learn to waterbend steam from volcanic vents, showing water magic users manipulating fire. Even though at first glance, the two elements seem opposed, they are, in ways, extensions of each other. A river may wear away stone as surely as a fire burns a forest, yet each may create fresh soil for new growth. On a more practical level, I'd say scald isn't that big a problem. It's strong, I won't deny. It's an auto pick on every special water type mon, as much as t-bolt is for electric or EQ is for ground. But that's kind of what makes it not that annoying. Sure, enemy water types may have it, but you can too, and since it doesn't require a highly specific mon to use, then there's no opportunity cost, since a defensive water type is often something you'd run anyway since it's a good part of a team comp, with or without scald. There is also workaround. Most special attackers have reasonable special defence as well, and won't have a hard time soaking up (get it?) a hit from scald. Additionally, for some getting the burn might be useful in protecting themselves from paralysis. Beyond that, I'm sure you won't like this, but grass types can pretty easily handle it. Most grass types are bulky and sustain heavy anyway, so they can eat a scald, and even if they get burned, they can just use a nicely buffed giga drain to heal off the damage. I'd say it's a useful and strong move, but even in this gen alone, there's moves introduced that are far more impactful without any luck involved, like shell smash and quiver dance, since they'll actually win you the game pretty much instantly. Perhaps, might I say this, you're a little too harsh on scald because it inadvertently makes grass types better and fire types worse? Anyways, sorry for long ramble. Just thought it was interesting to discuss, love the video and all your hard work, and also congrats to your mum for landing her big movie role as fire lord Charizard XD Keep it up.
Real talk, I screwed up my Black Nuzlocke because I taught my Munna Syncronoise over Psybeam. I had never seen Syncronoise before and missread it somehow to not work unless the user is the same type as Syncronoise. My brain just could not even consider the move was actually as shit as it is.
Kind of funny how you had Ariados complain about other pokemon getting two signature moves, when it has also had two signature moves (although not at the same time, and they're both awful)
Bestow would be theoretically useful in competitive to give a partner another berry (or other consumable item) after they consume their held one. You would assummedly do this if you are running a strategy based on using consumable items, such a pokemon with Unburden. That said never seen this move actually used in competitive so probably a bad strategy.
The thing is, even in that scenario, the only time you're using it is if the pokemon doesn't also learn Trick or Switcheroo, since it's just worse. The only singular niche Bestow has is if you're not sure your pokemon will use their held item by the time the pokemon trying to give their itek away acts, and don't want to replace the item the revieving pokemon has if they haven't used it by then. Like, the only time Bestow is worth anything is literally just Cheek Pouch support, any other time Trick just does it too, and better. Meanwhile, with Trick, you can also use it to disrupt enemy pokemon that are reliant on items like Eviolite or Choice items, get secondary usage off that by crippling support pokemon with those same choice items, can steal items from the enemy, and can take the consumable out of your pokemon's hands if it can't use it in this scenario.
Let the Pikachu line have Volt Tackle and buff it to 150 BP. It's not like Pikachu having an overtuned signature move is off brand for GF, and Pikachu isn't threatening anyway. Then make Wild Charge a Double Edge clone. Physical electric types finally get to eat
Yea if Scald had a more limited distribution back on introduction it wouldn't be nearly as hated, especially if the strongest water types didnt get it.
I can't believe Cheese forgot about the most powerful combo in Pokemon - Psyduck with soak can use Syncronoise on anything AND burn fire types with scald. Technically Golduck can do that to but then you'd be using Golduck. So who cares
Almost certainly Tropium, but I got a decent amount of use out of Synchronoise in a Y run a bit back. Inexplicably a GREAT utility move on Sigilyph for the Sky Battles, since very few things flying around were also Psychic. Pretty limited application outside of that, but hey, it's *some*thing.
OH HEY! Being acknowledged by Imported Cheese is a good feeling. I mean I won't argue the concept that water and fire together is almost impossible... *eyes Naruto* but this series says otherwise? Then again, the series created one of the most questionable female characters in any series. And I forgot to say this since I came late to the stream due to real life: ... Would you prefer Scald or Water Pulse? *eyes that 60 power on Water Pulse" ... Scald please. Besides, Vaporeon could become Flareon so it learning Scald makes more sense than Game Freak's idea in making Scald as VOLCANION'S SIGNATURE MOVE?! IT ALREADY HAS STREAM ERUPTION! This was a great list. I have no complains.... Instead of Burn, Scald (power and accuracy remain the same) should become like drop Speed -2 to the opponent but also +1 speed for the attacker and its name becomes like Aqua Shot. There, it's sort of less worse but still meta. At least Synchronise is crappy unlike Synchro Summon! HAHA!
@@ImportedCheese ... ACTUALLY you might get your wish. Cheese, you should conquer Konoha and claim your title as Hokage. SHOULD BE EASY! The Bread Knight's army is immortal basically, they got no chance!
Scald doesn’t need to nerfed, the power is fine just the way it is. Its distribution just needs to be reduced a little. Specifically, it should be the unique signature move of the Nonexistent Pokemon, Volcanion. If the only thing Scald could be used against is other Digimon in the Digital World, that would be just fine.
Heal Pulse defender has entered the chat Heal pulse is the best catching move in the game. False swipe? Trash, enjoy watching that shiny struggle itself to death. Heal pulse allows you to abuse the LAW OF LARGE NUMBERS and use items to funbro any wild pokemon into submission (bad move by the way) under an avalanche (also a bad move by the way) of cheap pokeballs. Never worry about fumbling those rare encounters to recoil moves or awkward weather chip damage ever again.
it's simple, I'll make the go moves tier list myself! Also hey 35:05 they literally just dropped a run energy rework yesterday lmao The biggest point in favor of Electro Ball really is just the INSTANT DEATH combo with Thunder Wave, but like who cares Who even gets serene grace charge beam? It's like Jirachi and Meloetta, DUN, Blissey? On uhh, Mismagius, Victini, and Chandelure!! and one more bonus thing...! Synchronoise/Reflect Type is a *Kecleon Exclusive Combo!* Karma Chameleon incoming!!
1:56:30 Volcanion's very existence is actually a point AGAINST scald! It is THE boiling water pokemon It has a signature move that is just scald+ in Steam Eruption And it was the only pokemon to my knowledge that kept scald in gen9 (Yes that means for a time the only pokemon with scald also the only one who learned strictly better scald) It is the embodiment of scalding hot water and it is Fire/Water type Therefore establishing that scalding hot water is itself a Fire/Water concept If it was something you only needed to be water type to do, Volcanion would be pure water, but it isn't.
Sky drop my beloved, nothing stronger than turning each battle into a 1v1 set up in yoyr favor. Is what i would say if it wasn't because of all the really heavy mons, specially when legendaries are around. ...and because the move no longer exists
@@ImportedCheese Well, more precisely, they originally only wrote lore for four figures, coinciding with the four classical elements, then found out they had been granted additional budgeting for two more figures, so they added ice and stone to the lore, despite water and earth already existing, because they didn't have anything else planned and had to hurry to make something before the deadline. But yeah, you're definitely right with the implication that companies will gladly make up unnecessary lore bloat for more cheddar

The day I learned Head Charge's original name was Afro Break, something died inside me. I don't see any problem with it keeping the original name. Bouffalant is all about the afro, you just can't take that away from its signature move.
Maybe "Afro" is too immersion breaking for western audiences?! I dunno
Can’t wait to see Sweep Baby inc’s presentation in its full edited glory
Don't worry, Sweep Baby Inc will make Assassin's Creed Shadows a bestseller!!!!
To be fair ice is water molecules slowed down so they frezze and hot water is just excited water molecules so if you can do one you should be able to do the other
You would think, right?! Is that not what the power point is about?!
If U-turn was limited to bug types the way Volt Switch is limited to electric types, nobody would care that it exists.
they should "nerf" u-turn to 60 bp!!!!!!! I like Scizor btw
I think it's a lot easier to stomach with it's new, lower distribution
Primal Groudon HATES this one weird trick!!
I hacked into Nintendo HQ to see if Mega Tropius was in Legends ZA. One day we will unlock the secrets of Darth Tropius the Strong! One day.

My unbreakable guard....
I absolutely adore the sweep baby inc bit for scald, it is both super entertaining with how close it is to the sweet baby inc press conference thing, and Its communicates the idea of scald being dumb to be put on every water type super well. and I agree we need more D.I.E in our pokemon games!

oh come on Acid Spray is pretty good in GO, it charges pretty fast and guaranteed reduces enemy defense.

Red and blue Basculin can learn Final Gambit, but it was removed from white Basculin's movepool specifically, because Game Freak likely didn't want TWO high HP ghost types using it and being a nuisance together.

Scald.
Join me...together, we will free the world from the tyranny of Scald
I am also fine with the movepool culling

For scald burning more than fire itself makes a lot of sense. So, I'm gonna say I have some disagreements with your reading on scald and water in general.
Extreme tropium, I will never bow to the scald lobby
Scald, a move so broken they nerfed an entire status condition because of it… And then still had to reduce its distribution.
Fire nerfed because of BLATANT Water FAVORITISM
Uh ignore that Fire has 6 resistances for some reason
The synchronoise wars were truly something to behold
Real talk, I screwed up my Black Nuzlocke because I taught my Munna Syncronoise over Psybeam. I had never seen Syncronoise before and missread it somehow to not work unless the user is the same type as Syncronoise. My brain just could not even consider the move was actually as shit as it is.
Well it's meta defining after the buff to 120!!!!!!!!!
Surely there are far better ways to do this lmao
Let the Pikachu line have Volt Tackle and buff it to 150 BP. It's not like Pikachu having an overtuned signature move is off brand for GF, and Pikachu isn't threatening anyway. Then make Wild Charge a Double Edge clone. Physical electric types finally get to eat
They already have SUPERCELL SLAM, do they need more...?
Yea if Scald had a more limited distribution back on introduction it wouldn't be nearly as hated, especially if the strongest water types didnt get it.
It should be a signature move
Hone Claws/Coil goes well with rock moves; there's no good 100 acc rock move, so +atk/+acc turns Stone Miss into Stone Cold Killer.

I can't believe Cheese forgot about the most powerful combo in Pokemon - Psyduck with soak can use Syncronoise on anything AND burn fire types with scald.
Technically Golduck can do that to but then you'd be using Golduck. So who cares
Loses 1.5x STAB, but does more damage because it's not resisted!!!!!!!!!!
Synchronoise will rise again when they bring back SKY BATTLES!
HAHA!

I gotta say, I always love using Foul Play.

Volcanion's very existence is actually a point AGAINST scald!
It is THE boiling water pokemon
It has a signature move that is just scald+ in Steam Eruption
And it was the only pokemon to my knowledge that kept scald in gen9
(Yes that means for a time the only pokemon with scald also the only one who learned strictly better scald)
It is the embodiment of scalding hot water and it is Fire/Water type

@@ImportedCheese Well, more precisely, they originally only wrote lore for four figures, coinciding with the four classical elements, then found out they had been granted additional budgeting for two more figures, so they added ice and stone to the lore, despite water and earth already existing, because they didn't have anything else planned and had to hurry to make something before the deadline.
