very fun fact: the protagonists and rivals were originally planned to be 16, which makes them going off on a journey with pokemon make more sense with the region being based on the USA - it's kind of like a 16 year old getting their license/first car and being able to go out on their own! not sure why they were aged down at some point.
@@dunkdon158if you mean the “age of consent in Japan” thing, apparently it was 14 nationally but every prefecture had it higher, so it pretty much would never count as 14 aside from maybe international water/air situations. I hear it was changed to be higher recently

Really great retrospective on Gen 5. It gave me a new way of viewing professor Juniper- she's significantly younger than previous professors and as a result she's way more hands on. She's different Tho I would like to mention BW2 is more focused on change. For example Hugh (aka Steve) had his perspective changed and challenged throughout in being able to accept that Team Plasma are no longer ALL bad and moves from trying to vilify all of Plasma to standing by the members who have grown. Meanwhile someone like Ghetsis is set in his ways, practically shackled and held back by them. And when that ideology crumbles and he's forced to face reality he falls apart mentally and we don't see him again afterwards.
personally, i never felt like i need to be leveled the same as gym leaders or trainers, being right under them I was strong enough by having a well balanced team and would level up in the actual battle as well, which made me completely surprised as to why you were grinding.
Totally I feel the same way. First he was complaining about level grinding & then he also started moaning about unskippable trainers in the gyms. You might as well fight everyone just to make sure you're on par with levels, especially cuz the gym trainers can't be battled after beating the gym leader.
Different people have different playing styles. I like having my team as strong as possible or learning specific moves which sometimes required over levelling, at least when compared to gym and plasma battles. Not necessarily for Black 2 but I always remember having a Breloom before the 3rd badge on Emerald because I really like using Mach Punch against Magneton and also just resist electric type moves. People will say that just use Marshtomp for the full immunity and STAB against the entire team instead of just Magneton. Sometimes I try different teams and I skip the most usual mons I've used before. When I'm using a new mon I haven't used before and I check its move list sometimes I just feel the need to gain levels over main battles to have an easier time. Not every run needs to be a nuzlocke or challenge run, mons previously unused by myself feels like a challenge enough.

A great analysis. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I think Gen 5 is more appreciated once you become a adult and see the deeper meaning behind the plot.
When this game came out, I was 14 years old when it occurred. And considering that I was already into plots akin to horror movies and end of the world scenarios, this was no different as politics was really up the antiques during the 2007-2008 situations. So yeah, while I may have not played the game, the amount of content stuffed into one game, plus the layout of the game (and my personal favorite: While outside of Japan it's called "Unova", I prefer to call it "Isshu" as in "The whole area has too many "Isshu"s to deal with. Ranging from Team Plasma/Plasma gang, to minor incidents here and there in the city. So yeah, I amusingly make a pun out of this region as "Issue/Isshu" instead of calling it "Unova".) But to be honest, it does have one of the saddest songs I've heard of at that time, besides the sad piano & violin music I used to listen to on UA-cam two years prior to this game's release.
I always loved Gen 5, but after having lived through the controversies & hate bashing this generation received during its prime, I can't help but feel bitter with people now calling it the best gen.
I remember this era too, as I grew up in it. At the time, with only five gens, it was mostly the genwunners that really were the loudest, which I think is outrageous considering the original BW is just an echo of gen one, pretty much a soft reboot of the series. Werster brought this up in a pretty funny clip, where he said the people that hated the games really came down to "where is pikachu? Where is Zubat? Fucking ice cream. Fucking trash bag. Game sucks." It's funny that this is really the criticisms levied at these games, because it's fair, but insane at the same time. Yes the game forces you to use "new" pokemon, but that's what makes it so special for a lot of people, it's a breath of fresh air and an apologetically stark explosion of creativity for the series. A lot of the criticisms come from, ironically, why people think these games are so good now: nostalgia. Pokemon really caters to gen one a lot, Kanto gets a lottttt of love, and I think that Pokemon actually loved Unova so much at the time. Part of it is a crabs in the bucket thing, where fans will drag down the new region to say "they can't make something better than my favorite game," and that attitude being so prevalent in the community today I think ruins the experience of a lot of games now. I don't think that a new game being better takes away from an older game, but that was really what appeared to be the attitude of the time, despite it being basically paradoxical. If the new games are so bad, why do people like them so much?

A lot of talk about the remakes here. I feel like they’re not coming until 2025, given we’ve only heard news about Legends Z. I don’t think that means they’re skipping Gen 5 remakes, but that they’re taking more time to make them actually good. Of course, they’re still developing Legends Z right now, and that could very well mean they’re also developing a regular Gen 6 remake on top of the Gen 5 ones. This would definitely be the worst case scenario
going with the trend of when remakes happen, it would probably be after gen 10. But the question for gen 5 is, what do they even do? Do they only remake the original? Do they combine the two? Or do they make a completely new story for the Unova region?
A detail I never noticed about N when I played the game: N will always talk faster than the maximum text speed setting. Cheren isn't kidding when he says he talks too fast.

I think it was a deliberate design choice to make you underleveled compared to the gyms. Since the gym leaders don't have many pokemon, it's a way of increasing difficulty
He just likes the choice, he mentions somewhere in here that he would go out of his way to fight them anyway. I prefer the puzzle type gyms where getting through while dodging trainers is the highest form of solving the puzzle, I’m thinking the Gen 3 ice and flying gyms.
@@riplix20 i get that as a prefferance but it just seems contradictory when your choosing to do a slower grind method as well. Trainers reward increased xp compared to wild encounters.
I remember my very first time playing at 8 years old, I struggled so much with the first gym I just kept battling wild pokemon until my Oshawott evolved. And the only other pokemon game I had before this was Rangers so I honestly didn’t know they evolved with level up 😭
Personally, I played BW2 because it was the latest games that time. and I was just randomly searching some pokemon games in DS emulators. While you rate it BW2 at around 6-7/10. The post game activities for BW2 were such a fun experience for me. The Shiny Haxorus, The White Tree Hollow and its counter part, THE undella house, etc. etc. it is still one of my favorites to this day.
People say Generation by only really mean main game, in Gen 5's case that's all it really has to show but Generation means every piece of content in that Generation including anime and spinoffs
54:18 There is a doctor at Chargestone Cave, but you might have missed him because he stays in a corner 😅 1:25:40 Ironically enough, BW forces you to capture the Legendary Dragon before fighting N. If you defeat it, the dragon will force you into battle AGAIN.
Sorry for the hefty read, but I remember being in junior high with my best friend playing Black or White. I was so envious because I never played a Pokémon title as a youngster aside from Blue Rescue Team, (best Pokémon game ever, I'll die on this hill.) And it's even more saddening to see just how amazing the story was in retrospect now being 26 and just how much new things the respective Black and White titles brought to the series. The new polished moving sprites, some of the most iconic bangers of the series, the 3D styled cities, and the female mc throwing their Pokémon out, (don't judge me..) I just wish I owned this game when I was younger. It was a different time back then, not just because I could get lost without the stress of being a grownup and everyday responsibilities, but the simple fact that games had more substance and heart put into them. In resolution, growing up sucks, but we're never too old to enjoy a great game, and watching great videos of like-minded individuals. Bravo bro!
12 years ago- what- that’s insane 😰 That was my first main series Pokemon game- Edit: It’s so cool to see a 3 hour video dedicated to Gen 5, although nostalgia is one of the main reasons it’s my favorite. I still love it.

@@Aurum4137 It was also a bunch of die-hard fans of Gen 1 who acted like they crawled out of the woodworks to talk about how much Gen 5 designs sucked compared to the original 151 (which is also when the term "Genwunner" started)

I very much appreciated the coverage of the game. I stopped playing when I had to swap systems from the GBA to the DS and feel like I missed the Golden Era of Pokemon. Only recently returning to the franchise with the growing coverage of ROM hacks I find it interesting that there really isn't consensus as to what the "best game" is. It more often seems like any sort of attempt at finding a definitive answer instead just shows the average age of the audience. To that end I would be interested in you doing a long-form play of Platinum, Emerald, or HGSS as they are most often sited as being the "Definitive Best" and with your recent experience in Gen 5 you might be able to look at Gen 4 and Gen 3 more objectively. Edit: also Pineapple on Pizza is an Abomination.
My big gripe with B/W is simply that every 5 minutes I’m being stopped by Cheren or Bianca or N or I’m getting a call or Team Plasma or something is pulling me into long dialogue. Like I just want to play pokemon let me playyyyy

But, playing B2 for the 3rd time jist recently, and Really going All Out on the side content and post-game, it's probably better than HG&SS, which have been my favourite/best of All gens. Gen 3 doesn't get enough love because of "Too much water", and Johto/Kalos are probably the most underrated Regions due to their games having certain qualities that put some off.
Ya know grn 5 regional varients would probably be almost as sick as alolhas if they do it when they get there especially if they resteict it the same way b/w 1 did while allowing only regional varients as far as other gen mons go
I'm surprised you used a physical lucario build, unless that was a choice because of stats and nature making the attack stat higher than Sp.Attack. Generally a Special attacking lucario build is superior, it's why its signature move "Aura sphere" is a special attack.
Just to say from the first few seconds, gen 5 was divisive on release, i remember countless complaining about the direction these games took the series because of the soft reboot, so it’s mostly retrospect that people like it so much nowadays
1:50:20. I dislike the requirement of PokeStar Studios because of the required save. This means you can't replay the rest of the game without overwriting the save file. The rest of PokeStar Studios is actually kinda interesting.
You know i've never really thought about that fact, does kind of make it a bit disappointing that you can't play around with a new save beyond that point if you already have a save file
Noooooooooooo! Not Fluffy the shiny Gigalith! That is legitimately the worst! Gigalith is my favorite Pokémon and that is in part because Roggenrola was my first ever shiny Pokémon. Honestly, losing a shiny Gigalith is a travesty, and I will never talk bad about Alder again! No wonder he is so lost!
It kind of feels like your end review of Black and White 2 is literally just 6-7 cause the story wasnt quite as good. Completely ignoring the gameplay, new areas, the amount of different Pokemon you can catch and all the amazing things that were carried over and most of the time improved upon from the OG Black and White. (I also think you kind of downplayed just how much there is to do in the post game. Its almost as big and plentiful as Gen 1-4s post game combined.)
Black and white 1 and 2 are companion pieces. The flaws of one are covered in the other, BW1, you are region locked, play BW2, want a deeper story to understand what minimal story is in BW2 play BW1, like certain aspects of one game set over the other play it insted, my thing is that these games are perfect for each other and thats why its my favorite gen

This one is great - 31:59 - I'm shiny hunting in B2 for Zweilous right now while watching. Cheers and thanks!
A whole MOVIE?! HECK YEAH
It is not just nostalgia. I love the sprites and such and will be asking for this game and a ds for xmas
These were the only Pokémon games I owned as a child. These games are the best to ever exist in my opinion
I remember there’s a theory that Route 4 is some kind of reference to ground zero
I think it was a deliberate design choice to make you underleveled compared to the gyms. Since the gym leaders don't have many pokemon, it's a way of increasing difficulty
i really dont get the complaint of gym leader trainers being mandatory when youre also choosing to grind lol.
Trainers reward increased xp compared to wild encounters.
took me half way through the video to realize this was trails and notcie the rowlet shrowd pfp :')
truly it is a short video, gen 5’s greatness cannot be encapsulated in a measly 2-3 hours
my favorite new youtuber just dropped a 3 hours yapping video, i'm happy
They should make a definitive edition. Mega Black and Ultra White.
i have 132 hrs in white 2 there was so much post game and my friends all played it too. online battles were great and N was so memorable.
I liked it as a bday present but here u go a comment too, happy bday u are actually top tier pokémon yt
I'm playing through Black and Black 2 myself right now so this video is perfect! 3 hours of Pokemon? Yes please!
12 and 14 years old!? Fuck I’m old 😭
I remember my very first time playing at 8 years old, I struggled so much with the first gym I just kept battling wild pokemon until my Oshawott evolved.
Probably the “shortest” video on gen 5 i have ever seen but it was well worth the watch
54:18
There is a doctor at Chargestone Cave, but you might have missed him because he stays in a corner 😅
1:25:40
Ironically enough, BW forces you to capture the Legendary Dragon before fighting N.
Bravo bro!
Maybe Skyla was helping a Corviknight that got shot fown by a Tinkaton or smth
37:35 route 4 is actually roughly where the twin towers were located in new york, iirc it was supposed to be in reference to that
My personal favorite generation. Such a freaking gem
It's cool how gym leaders go out of their way to stop crime in their cities and they arent just figureheads
12 years ago- what- that’s insane 😰
That was my first main series Pokemon game-
Edit: It’s so cool to see a 3 hour video dedicated to Gen 5, although nostalgia is one of the main reasons it’s my favorite. I still love it.
Do you @trailspokemon know anyone who’s done a video summary playthrough of this quality for Pokemon Platinum? This video was fantastic (I looked through your channel in hopes you made such a review video for Platinum)! 1:33:45
Fun video, I might be misremembering stuff but I remember before gen 8 black and white where considered the worse of the games (idk if that was generational mindset changing as I started with white 2 and never finished it)
No, you remember correctly. Gen 5 was severely hated online when they were the current generation.
People really were blinded by hgss and platinum
@@Aurum4137 It was also a bunch of die-hard fans of Gen 1 who acted like they crawled out of the woodworks to talk about how much Gen 5 designs sucked compared to the original 151 (which is also when the term "Genwunner" started)
@@Zistheone2 Gen 1ners and Gen 4 people were extremely toxic. (Still Gen 4 lovers are pretty toxic to this day). They both hated the game with a passion. Usually stating that a trash bag and ice cream cone were bad pokemon design
Fun fact - I aged out before gen 5, so have literally no nostalgia for this series. But I love video essays, so I'm here for this
Came for unova content, stayed for the gorgeous man
The part about the desert doesn't bother me personally as I live in Las Vegas and that's normal for us here haha
Today's my birthday and I know what it's like to get or have nothing.. heres a like and a sub.. wish I could do more for you. Happy belated bday
My favourite gen!
Finally a short video for my sound checks
as a kid i never got black&white because i disliked dimond/pearl/platium so mutch thinking the rest of all pokemon games was gonan be like those and that friends in the school yard where grewing out of pokemon and other things because "thats childish" but one day i needed a new game for a road trip so i grabbed pokemon black 2 and man i loved it, hated myself for never picking up nether soul silver/heart gold or black/white when i was younger because these became my most fave pokemon games later on
My first Pokémon game was Black and White and I remember playing this game every day for year la heck I still have my first Pokémon my stater Superior I nick named BX ( I was 12 ) short for Battle Expert out of the whole game my favorite parts where the story and the hall you can customizes
Guys... Team Plasma is basically PETA
Team plasma actually respects pokémon though. They don't murder 80% of the ones they take
@zachroos3910 that's PETA USA. They are stupid like the average US citizen is known to be 🤷🏼♂️. But 80% still is an exaggeration 😄
@@zachroos3910sure they don't murder them like the kill shelter peta but they certainly don't respect them like did you miss all the cutscenes in both games where they actively abuse pokemon
Any poll that puts gen 7 alongside gen 3 is crazy lol
this is one of the best videos i have seen in the past year
This is the generation where faithful remakes would have been welcome.
1:26 - What program is this on a hacked 3ds?
Happy late birthday 🫡 also your opinion is objectively correct
As a proud Genwunner lol, who played Pokemon Blue in 98' as an 11yo, and had EVERY mainline pokemon game up until US&UM, I didn't initially like B&W when I first purchased them.
It took me years later and replays from Gen 1 - 7 on emulators and my 3/DS to realise Just How Good B&W2 were, specifically.
I think Gen 4 is the Most overrated gen, including Platinum.
This is the shortest video I can find on UA-cam now.
29:15 wow, I’ve never heard anybody using my name for a pokémon, since it’s in incredibly rare..
As someone who's lived through every pokemon Game.. I still believe Gen5 is the best.. or one of the best.
I hope they let us shiny hunt Victini in the eventual Unova remakes
Ya know grn 5 regional varients would probably be almost as sick as alolhas if they do it when they get there especially if they resteict it the same way b/w 1 did while allowing only regional varients as far as other gen mons go
I'm surprised you used a physical lucario build, unless that was a choice because of stats and nature making the attack stat higher than Sp.Attack. Generally a Special attacking lucario build is superior, it's why its signature move "Aura sphere" is a special attack.
Looking forward to watching/listening to this!
that outro goes hard
Watching hourl long essays about my favourite dead games, is my passion
Just to say from the first few seconds, gen 5 was divisive on release, i remember countless complaining about the direction these games took the series because of the soft reboot, so it’s mostly retrospect that people like it so much nowadays
You need to do this for gen 3 and 4
Dissing Ghetsis’ theme is an even bigger L than people who called Gen V the worst generation since Gen II on release. Garbage take, frfr.
Can you please link how to get those events in pokemon black?
fun fact you're supposed to play pokemon white and then pokemon white 2 or pokemon black and then black 2 (for it to make complete sense)
I'd just like to share that Ghetsis is called G-Cis in the German version of Pokemon Black and White and I think that's very cool and funny
The post game from both games is too good to be legal
Shortest video I’ve ever seen. Impressive.
Ghetsis theme is good if you dont beat it in two minutes, ngl.
Thanks!
No, thank you 💚
Noooooooooooo!
Watching this shiny hunting ducklett on the bridge in nimbasa
2:20:47 my thought here is that Cobalion probably only presents itself to you
I thought it was a short vid
It kind of feels like your end review of Black and White 2 is literally just 6-7 cause the story wasnt quite as good. Completely ignoring the gameplay, new areas, the amount of different Pokemon you can catch and all the amazing things that were carried over and most of the time improved upon from the OG Black and White. (I also think you kind of downplayed just how much there is to do in the post game. Its almost as big and plentiful as Gen 1-4s post game combined.)
BW2 are easily the best mainline games. But Genius Sonority made the best pokemon games of all time.
I just got my shiny Sprigatito while watching this vid. Also it was in 93 eggs.
Edit: no shiny charm BTW.
Black and white 1 and 2 are companion pieces. The flaws of one are covered in the other, BW1, you are region locked, play BW2, want a deeper story to understand what minimal story is in BW2 play BW1, like certain aspects of one game set over the other play it insted, my thing is that these games are perfect for each other and thats why its my favorite gen
bw2 ❤❤❤
Insane that you think you need to grind your pokemon to beat the first gym. You dont need to be equal level to a pokemon to beat it, this is a strategy game incase you didnt know.
Cobalion is pronounced with a long a. Co-BALE-ee-on. I don't know how you didn't even pronounce it like Cobalt, which is the usual "mistake"
Yo almost 80k subs!!!!!!
